on the island. You can exchange dollars and

euros in local bank branches in Hadibu.

However, the currency rate will be less

    convenient than on the mainland.

The only mobile phone network operating in

Socotra is the Yemen Mobile which doesnt

work with GSM mobile phones. You would

need to buy a CDMA mobile phone to be able

to call home from the island. Even then, only

Hadibo and some minor parts of the island are

    within the coverage.

Internet is available only in Hadibo. There

is an Internet cafe close to the main mosque

providing five laptops with a high speed

connection for the price of 20 YR per minute.

The cafe is open between 4 pm and 11 pm when

electricity supply from the public network is

available. The staff speaks very good English.

Although there is a hospital in Hadibu

medical service is of quite a low standard in

Socotra. Bring your own first-aid kit, you are

most probably to need pills against diarrhoea

and a cream for insect stings. If needed, there

    are local pharmacies in Hadibu.

You dont need any special vaccination

for visiting Socotra. You should have just a

common travelers set of vaccination including

Hepatitis A and B, typhoid and meningitis.

Risk of malaria is low on the island and its

incidence among local population has been

significantly lowered by the UNDP project in

recent years. You dont need to take any anti

    malarial drugs.

How to get around SocotraThanks to the sustainable way of tourism

Socotra goes for the island stays clean from

hotel resorts and mass tourism attractions.

However, local people are prepared to provide

tourist services such as guides, cars, boats,

meals and to help you to get easily around.

Hotels with TV, running water and restaurants

can be found only in Hadibu. Around the

island, you can also sleep in an eco-lodge or in

campsites where facilities are simpler. Anyway,

you will usually get running water, a shower

and toilets. The price includes three meals but

you wont be charged for meals you skip.

You need to bring your own camping gear or

you can hire it. The campsites offering their

services are now: Dihamri, Homhill, Amak,

Rosh and Skund. More campsites are planned to

be managed by local communities in the future.

If you get an invitation to stay in a house of a

local family you should offer them money for

the service. Remember that Socotra is one of

    the poorest regions in Yemen.

A lunch in Rosh campsite with a lobster

brought from the fish market in Hadibu.

Meals on the island are usually simple, mostly

fresh fish or goat meat. Vegetables and fruits

are available only occasionally. There are

many small shops and restaurants in Hadibu

    and some in Qalansiya.

Tap water is not drinkable so dont forget to

buy enough bottles of drinking water before

    you leave Hadibu.

Accommodation and meals can be arranged

    through your local tourist guide.

For moving around the island, you will need

to rent a 4WD with a driver. Local people

often hitchhike around the island and there are

few regular lines (eg. Qalansyia - Hadibu) but

rather dont count on it because minibuses are

    usually full.

For snorkeling and diving, you can hire

equipment at the spot for decent prices. Pay

attention to a dive instructor since strong

currents flow around the island having resulted

    in deaths of several tourists.

  • The climate is mild with a chance of an odd

    shower.

When planning your trip dont forget to check

this years term for a Muslim fasting month of

Ramadan. Since no consumption of food and

drinks is allowed during the day and many

services stay closed travelers are recommended

to choose another time for their journey.

What to bring along Prepare well for outdoor activities which will

form most of your stay in Socotra.

Take enough light and comfortable clothing

made of modern functional materials that

absorb sweat and dry quickly. You will need to

change your clothes often. Dont forget shoes or

trekking sandals suitable for walking on stones.

You will also need a hat and a sun cream.

Due to possible lack of water, especially when

sleeping outdoors, bring a pack of towelettes.

You can also buy an aseptic cleansing lotion

    for cleaning your hands.

In the evening, you will appreciate an anti-

mosquito repellent. A mosquito net will be

provided in hotels, eco-lodges and campsites.

You dont need to worry, the risk of malaria is

    low in the Archipelago.

Having your own sleeping bag is not

necessary since all camping gear is provided

at the campsites. However, you might like

to spread your own bed sheet on a borrowed

    mattress.

Bring a torch for camping and for unreliable

electricity supplies in Hadibu. You can also

buy a solar lamp in the Womens Development

    Association in Hadibu.

If female travelers want to swim in the sea,

instead of bikini bring a baggy T-shirt and a

pair of leggins to cover your legs. It is not

compulsory but you will feel better not getting

    long stares.

Bring enough cash since no ATM is available

    2524

  • on a handshake. On departing, greeting with

    everyone is required again.

When invited to a Socotri house, take off

    your shoes before stepping in.

You can accept food you are offered but

paying a contribution is highly recommended.

Most of local people cannot afford hospitality

in such extent they perform. Usually, a visitor

is served food and the family eats leftovers

    after.

Dont take pictures of people without asking

    for permission. Especially photographing

    women is a sensitive issue.

When selecting a campsite, do not choose

a spot beside the local water source. Your

presence is likely to make the women and girls

whose job it is to fetch water feel nervous.

Do not wash clothes or yourselves unless

you are invited to do so. Remember that any

body of water is likely to be the main source of

    drinking water for neighboring villages.

Travellers Tips Socotra is a unique island in every way. The

    Archipelago stepped out towards sustainable

ecotourism only recently and you should take

this fact into account. There are some tips

how to get the most of your stay on the magic

    island.

When to goClimate is a crucial issue to consider when

planning your trip to Socotra. Avoid the

monsoon season from June till September

when strong winds sweep the island and most

local people leave for the mainland. However,

if you are a surfing enthusiast come in July

when wind is growing in speed and waves are

    getting higher.

The best time for your visit is from January till

March when its not too hot yet and the sea is

    crystalline.

In April and May the sea is still fantastic but

the temperature is on the rise. You will need

plenty of spare clothes to change frequently.

From October to December, the island puts on

a fresh green coat after the monsoon season.

    2322

  • Hadibu for proper disposal. At campsites,

collect your rubbish and hand it over to a

campsite keeper for further disposal. Set a

good example to local people who have been

facing waste management problems only since

    opening the island in 1999.

Importing qat has been banned on the island.

Do not try to bring any since you and your

luggage will be checked upon arrival. Do

not encourage qat smugglers by buying from

    them.

Please take note of any instructions posted in

    the Protected Areas.

Make sure you respect local people and

customs. They will reward you by staying

kind and welcoming. Pay special attention to

    issues described below:

Since Socotra is a Muslim island so you

should consider carefully what clothes you

wear there. Long sleeves and trousers are

highly recommended they will also protect

you against sunburn. Shorts for men are not

appropriate, they are perceived as underpants.

Women should wear loose blouses covering

their buttocks. Headscarf will be appreciated.

Muslims pray five times a day and your local

guide will obey this rule. The morning call for

a prayer will wake you up at 4 a.m. During the

day, you will make a prayer stop at noon, at 3

    p.m., after 6 p.m. and around 9 p.m. Since it

is important to wash properly before praying,

your guide will sometimes stop by sources of

water well before these times. Be patient and

dont be angry for the delay which wont take

longer than 15 minutes. No alcohol is allowed on the island.

Meeting local people always starts with

formal greeting ceremony. Shake hand with

    every person present including children.

Omitting someone would be considered as

rude. Some people however prefer not to be

touched. Let them take a lead and dont insist

    2120

  • Do not cut live trees as they are living fossils.

Use only dead wood picked from the ground

for campfires. Local campsite keepers will

provide you with lamps so think twice if you

really insist on making a fire.

Avoid touching or damaging corals and do

not feed the fish as it may cause changes in

their behavior. If you are fond of fishing,

always go with a local fisherman in his boat.

Stay away from nesting sites of turtles and

birds. Do not camp in these areas and try to

keep your behavior as unintrusive as possible.

A guided visit with a conservation specialist

from the EPA is highly recommended.

Hunting is not allowed as it may endanger

endemic birds and animals. If driving, pay

high attention to wandering goats. A fine as

high as 10 000 YR is charged for hitting a goat.

It is prohibited to drive off tracks and to drive

on any beach. Off-road driving causes severe

    damage to the environment.

Keep the marked hiking tracks to minimize

    damage to vegetation.

Do not litter. Take your rubbish back to

  • Socotra has ten species of endemic birds

birds that are not found anywhere else in the

    world.

Because of such high diversity and endemism

in plants, the islands have been declared a

WWF Global 200 Ecoregion, a Plantlife

International Centre of Plant Diversity and are

included in the Horn of Africa Biodiversity

Hotspot. These are added to designations of

UNESCO World Heritage Site and UNESCO

    Man and Biosphere Reserve.

    The dragons blood tree, Dracaena

    cinnabari

(Ruscaceae), is named after the blood-red sap

that exudes from the trunk when cut. This has

been used traditionally as a medicine and a

cosmetic. The trees are slow-growing and

long-lived (possibly a few hundred years), and

in maturity the crowns have an upside-down

umbrella shape. The dense Dracaena woodland

found at Firmihin is globally unique no other

    arborescent (tree-forming) Dracaena species

are found in woodland as they are on Socotra.

There is a wealth of habitat diversity around

the islands coastal cliffs, rocky coves, cobble

and sandy beaches, mudflats, lagoons and

coral reefs. Some of the coastal cliffs continue

    underwater, their sheer sides occasionally

poked by caves. Others fall away to a flat

limestone plain fronted by ancient coral reef,

some of which now lies above sea level. In

places more sheltered from the monsoon

winds, waves and currents; small patches of

tropical coral reef, tranquil shallow lagoons

and mudflats occur. Further offshore, the open

sea is influenced by the seasonal onset of eddies

and gyres, with major effects on productivity,

    dispersal and community structure.

Beaches range from small sand or cobble

patches scattered among the boulders, fossil

reefs and cliffs, to long expanses kilometres in

length. The longest continuous sandy beach is

located on the north coast at Ghubbah, where

it extends over 20 km and providing the main

local nesting site for Loggerhead Turtles

Caretta caretta. Cobble beaches occur along

parts of the Noged Plain on the south coast,

on the north coast near Hadiboh, Qadheb, Ras

Qadama and south of Qalansiyah and Shuub

    in the west.

Travellers GuideWhat to expect on Socotra?

Keep in mind: you are visiting a remote island

and one of the poorest and most disadvantaged

areas of Yemen. Therefore you will find only

basic services and basic hygiene facilities there

and only within the capital of Hadibu. The

pristine nature needs your special care during

your stay in the Archipelago. There are some

essential rules you should follow to leave as

small footprint on the island as possible:

Do not collect, remove or damage any

material, living or dead from the Protected

Areas including birds, plants, fossils etc.

Keep in mind that export and import of any

biological material from or to the island is

strictly prohibited. The ban applies also to parts

of tree branches, roots, seeds, bulbs, shells and

corals. Dont put yourself into trouble, you and

your luggage will be checked when leaving the

    island.

The Archipelago has been under the protection

of the Convention on Biological Diversity that

the Government of Yemen signed in 1992.

Support the island and its people by hiring

local guides, using local services and buying

goods from local shops. The prices are pretty

affordable on the island. You are more than

welcome to buy local products such as dragon

blood resin, frankincense resin, aloe sap, palm

tree products, honey and handicrafts. They are

nice souvenirs and safe to export.

Camping is only allowed in designated Camping

areas. All visitors must leave the Protected Area

by sunset unless staying in a designated campsite.

Socotra is well known for a high endemism

in several groups, but it may be surprising to

know that the number of Socotran species still

increases. New endemic Socotran species are

    added yearly.

The Archipelago is often referred to as the

Galapagos of the Indian Ocean due to the

richness of its fauna. Hundreds of endemic

animal species include 28 reptiles, 10 birds and

    over 300 invertebrates. Birdlife International

identifies over 22 Important Bird Areas on

the island. They include spectacular seabird

breeding areas as well as the habitats of species

and subspecies of endemics, which add to the

    islands high uniqueness.

The Socotra Archipelago boasts a rich flora,

remarkable endemic species and plants with

a long history of traditional use. With a total

of 835 vascular plant species, 308 (37%) are

endemic. There are also 74 bryophytes; one

hornwort, 30 liverworts and 43 mosses, 6 of

    which are endemic (Krschner, 2003).

The islands have a diverse geology and a

climate that varies between areas, creating

a diversity of ecosystems. Dense evergreen

and semi-evergreen woodland can be found

in wet and sheltered areas, but there are also

    drought-adapted plants surviving in desert-like

    landscapes.

Over 210 species of bird have now been

recorded in the Archipelago. Of these 43 are

known to breed and over 160 are migrant

visitors. Most of these will be stopping for a

short while during their long migrations from

breeding areas in Europe and Asia to their

wintering grounds in Africa. Many of these

migrant birds are very rare (known as vagrants)

and have only been recorded on Socotra a few

    times.

SocotraTogether To Protect The Magic Island

Due to its size, geographic position and evolutionary history, the Socotra

Archipelago is a prime regional center of unique biodiversity. From a

botanical point of view, Socotra is historically known for the rare and

spectacular plants that characterize the dramatic mountain and coastal

landscapes. You can find magic dragon blood trees, desert roses, cucumber

trees, frankincense trees, etc. According to botanists, the island of Socotra

Trip advisors reviews VERY INTERESTING ARCHITECTUREA very interesting and well thought piece of architectural history. it is very well kept and secured, entrance fees are very cheap. It will give you an insight into how Yemeni royalty used to live, there are many hidden passages and rooms to be discovered. You will need a good pair of legs because of the many steep stairs.

Not to be missed!Dar Al Hajar is situated in Wadi Dhar outside the city of Sanaa, in about 12-15km from it. I believe this palace, often referred to as the symbol of Yemen, is a must-see once you are in Sanaa. Scenic location is one of the most remarkable features of this famous attraction. YEMEN AIRWAYS

    Editorial

Finding Yemen overcoming the difficulties that it has been facing for a couple of years and continuing to progress towards a

brighter future fills me with plenty of optimism and hope. The barriers that rouse like surging waves caused by old and new

complications, including those that partly appear likeicebergs on a water surface, are standing therein the face of Yemen throughout

local, regional and international spheres to hinder itsadvancement. Yet, the steady progress of this beautiful country is safeguarded

by the determination of its wonderful nation. Yemen shall remain to be plentiful of goodness, bounteous in beauty and abundant in

optimism by the willpower of its people and the faith, wisdom and love that exists within their hearts.

Dear Passengers:It is that wisdom and faith of the Yemeni people that stands behind the excellent reputation of their national carrier, Yemen

Airways, around the globe. A reputation that is celebrated by its delightful clients and admirers who are the real driving force that

keeps us firmly committed to improving products and services to reflect our genuine passion for them.

Once again, we assure our valuable clients that we will always work very hard to ensure that passenger safety, welfare, and comfort

is consistently maintained on this and every flight you take with us.
