TRITON web page http://www.jamstec.go.jp/jamstec/TRITON/real_time/ ・ New TRITON Data Management System and new TRITON web page has started in 2005 ・ hourly data (real time) are available now

・ Example of TRITON data display 8 N,156E (longest TRITON record)

What TRITON accomplished ・ Continually monitors ENSO in the Pacific as the

TAO/TRITON array since January 2000.

・ Started the two Indian Ocean TRITON buoy deployment since October 2001 as a pilot study. TRITON array enables to investigate air-sea interaction and water mass change in the Indo-Pacific warm pool with salinity sensors.

・ Developed the data management and data distribution system.

・ Built a marine technician team for mooring work, data calibration and data processing.

・ Built partnership with BPPT, Indonesia which enabled the buoy recovery operation by Indonesian Research Vessel in 2003.

Development of TRITON buoy array from 1998 to 2002

Purposes; 1. Monitoring ENSO as TAO/TRITON array2. Air-sea interaction over the Pacific and Indian Ocean warm

pool 3. Variability of temperature and salinity in the warm pool - Improvement of the predictability of El Nino

Seventeen (17) TRITON buoys have been maintained since November 2002

New JAMSTEC Budget Initiative Funded・ JAMSTEC received a new 5-year budget starting in

JFY2005 for promoting the Indian Ocean mooring array as a part of "JEPP: Japan EOS (Earth Observation System) Promotion Program" related GEOSS.

・ This fund will enable the development of new small size TRITON buoy (JEPP buoy) and the continuation of the present TRITON sites in the Indian Ocean.

Grand design Current array up to 2007

Present TRITON ① Cut cost

below half of present construction and maintenance ② Make small and light to enable maintenance by ships in coastal countries ③ Improve data processor reliability and future extension

mini-TRITON

① Indian Ocean mooring array by JEPP② Replace present TRITON array in future

Easy operation

Super site TRITON

Next generation mooring array

Problems ① Require large vessel for maintenance, ② High costs for construction and maintenance, ③ Parts getting old, ④Old fashioned data transmission system.

① Contribute to GEOSS Earth Observing System.② Monitor and study tEl Nino, and Dipole Mode Phenomena.

Super site TRITON High precision,

interdisciplinary sensors

①High precision heat and fresh water flux measurements CO2 ②measurement ③ Utilize present TRITON platform
