Each year, two students of African ancestry, one a Nigerian, in Canadian tertiary institutions would be beneficiaries. The qualification for this award is based on financial need and/or academic status as determined by an independent selection committee. Funds are currently raised through donations from members. The committee is currently working on establishing a self-sustaining CANPAD Education Fund with the Canadian Medical Foundation.

WELCOME! I would like to welcome all our distinguished guests, CANPAD members and their families, our distinguished presenters for the CME, ladies and gentleman. I am delighted to welcome you all to our 2014 annual CME Conference and family event in Saskatoon. Forming CANPAD was like a dream but the dream has lived on. Lord Alfred Tennyson stated “dreams are true while they last and do we not live in dreams?” It is delightful to see how CANPAD has continued to go from strength to strength. We gather again this year for another meeting and family event.

Our CME this year will focus on Men’s Health. Distinguished professors in different disciplines pertaining to this topic have agreed to make presentations. Outside of the medical topic there will be information

sessions on investing as well as tertiary education opportunities in Europe.

According to CANPAD objectives, not only do we have the opportunity to get together with our families and socialize but also to network and help each other prosper in Canada and to share in the success/achievements of our members. Furthermore it helps us in laying fertile grounds for our offspring and future Nigerian physicians/immigrants to this country.

Canadian Association of Nigerian Physicians and Dentists (CANPAD) along the Medical Association of Nigerians across Great Britain (MANSAG) and the Association of Nigerians Physicians in the Americas (ANPA) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) a few years ago with the Nigerian Federal Ministry of Health. This document has made it feasible and easier for Nigerian physicians to conduct voluntary medical missions to Nigeria. The MOU has provided avenues to give back in our own little way to Nigeria.

Dr. Laosebikan represented us at the Joint Technical Committee meeting with the Federal Ministry of Health (Diaspora Unit) in Abuja last year. This recognition and invitation to participate in committees in Nigeria is a wonderful initiative and we hope that the Nigerian government will continue to collaborate in this fashion.

I am also delighted to inform members that our scholarship committee have continued to work very hard and will be presenting scholarships this year again to worthy recipients.

As we look to the future CANPAD will appreciate input and suggestions from our members and others who have dreams of a brighter future for CANPAD and leave a worthy legacy for the generations to come. “Footprints in the sands of time are made not by sitting down” (Proverbs).

I would like to extend my sincere thanks to the executive, past presidents and local organizing committee for their advice and assistance.

Welcome and have a wonderful time in Saskatoon.

Dr. Remi Odulana-Ogundimu

Using Advances in Communications Technology to Inexpensively Enhance International Medical EducationChris E. U. Ekong, MB.BS, FRCSC, FICS, FACS, CCPE. 1545-1600

Abstract: Physicians have always had great interest in sharing their knowledge with peers and young learners. It was initially done by documenting our experiences in writing for future generations to read. More immediate learning then became possible when physicians started gathering in rooms from time to time for Rounds. The evolution of modern technology has eliminated the need for us to be in the same room or country for Rounds. This paper will review current communications technology. I will discuss how we have used it in the Division of Neurosurgery at the Regina Qu’Appelle Health Region, initially to share our experiences inexpensively with other Neurosurgeons in North America. I will also discuss our expansion into Asia, and how this could be expanded to African countries.

NIGERIA hIGh COMMISSIONER TO CANADAWACS 2015 Community Outreach in Abidjan – Call for Canadian Surgical SpecialistsEmmanuel O. Abara MB.BS, FRCSC, FACS, FICS.1515-1545

BACKGROUND

The West African College of Surgeons (WACS) was the “brain child “of two famous Surgeons - Dr. Victor Ngu of the Cameroons (a University of Ibadan graduate) and Dr. Charles Bowesman, a British Surgeon in the services of Ghanaian Government at Kumasi.

The organization has grown since its first Council meeting held on 3rd December, 1960. It currently serves as a post graduate College that continues to nurture and foster capacity building in Health care including medical and surgical education throughout the West African Community. Like the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, it has a bilingual structure - English and French. It serves a wide region, diverse in economy, educational and health resources as well as organizational infrastructure.

In 2015, the 55th Annual Congress will hold in Abidjan, Ivory Coast. An outreach of clinical care and health education to the communities around Abidjan is planned as a community engagement event.

OBJECTIVES:

At the end of the presentation, attendees will

1. Learn about the West African College of Surgeons and its role in capacity building and training of Surgical Specialists in the West African Sub region

2. Understand how various groups can work collaboratively to make meaningful impact on the health of our communities.

3. Consider the opportunities and challenges of capacity building among surgeons and health care professionals in West Africa and others in Diaspora for the benefit of the sub-region

FROM ThE LOCAL ORGANIZING COMMITTEEOn behalf of the Local organizing Committee (LOC), I would like to welcome you all to the 13th CANPAD Continuing Medical Education (CME) and Family Events. Our wonderful organization has strived to make ongoing professional development as well as the facilitation of interaction be-tween Nigerian doctors and dentists and their families its priority.

At the 2013 Annual General Meeting in Toronto, Saskatoon inherited the responsibility and oppor-tunity of being the host city. To this end, the LOC has worked relentlessly in collaboration with the CANPAD executive committee to bring us all together once again. The uniqueness of our city this time of the year has made this process very interesting to say the least. This challenge has enlightened me as well as the rest of the LOC members as to what this great city has to offer.

The nature of our profession often creates an environment where our spouses and children are relegat-ed to “back stage”. This year, we have tried to create specific opportunities for nurturing and foster-ing relationships among our children as they enjoy a dedicated youth event visiting the Diefenbaker Canada Centre and the Canadian Light Source. Our female spouses (apologies to the male spouses of CANPAD members) and female doctors will also “bond together and let-their-hair-loose” as they enjoy a fun time together at the Ladies Night, without the pressure of “spouses and kids”.

Last but not least, a big thank you to the Nigerian High Commissioner, the Mayor of the City of Saskatoon, our speakers, sponsors, Registration desk staff, Chaperones and all those who have volun-teered in one way or another to make this event a success. On behalf of CANPAD I sincerely thank every member of the LOC for their hard work.

Have a wonderful conference and enjoy Saskatoon.Adeyemi Laosebikan
