We have a full range of trips, including the annual sports tour to Jersey, which all of Year 8 and some Year 7 pupils participate in and is nearly always viewed as the highlight of their time at St Michael’s. Moving into Year 8 everyone has a position of responsibility such as prefect or House Captain and they enjoy helping to look after the younger children. We are very proud of the achievements of our pupils; by the time they leave us, they have

Should I stay or should I go? Two parents share their stories of how they deliberated over whether their children would stay on at the Prep or join in Year 7 – something they might have never considered before

For some children, their primary education has left them with a sense of failure; either not being selected for grammar school, or languishing in the middle of a mixed-ability class, which can have a

He was struggling in all areas of the curriculum and seemed completely de-motivated. education for the whole of his secondary schooling, but felt that if we could reignite his interest and give him an academic boost, then maybe the state could be an option thereafter. Within a term we were absolutely sure that we had made the right choice with St Michael’s.

Our fears about forming new friendships were unwarranted as he was welcomed by his peers and was quickly established as a key player in the rugby side. We were helped to choose an appropriate senior school and in the two years he was at St

Until my daughter had a chance conversation with her teacher I had simply planned on enrolling her for the 11+ followed by grammar

she came home and told me that her teacher had said: “Tell Mummy I think you should stay on in years 7 and 8”. I hadn’t really given it a thought – after all, wasn’t it the boys going for Tonbridge and the girls going for Sevenoaks

short of excellent. Small classes and individual attention from the teachers will bring out the best that she is capable of in all subjects• And last, but certainly not least, she will have the chance to form lasting friendships with the boys in her year. From speaking to others, it is very clear that in these two years strong bonds of friendship form between the children Now, she is completely happy with the choice we have made - and we did make it together. She feels that it is the best choice for her and, in fact, she’s quite excited about moving up into year 7 and becoming a Prefect! Do I believe that the teachers acted in self-interest in suggesting that we keep our daughter at the school for two more years? Not for a moment. One thing which has become crystal clear to me from the parents’ evenings is that the

What happens if we join you at Year 7? Pupils who are with us for Years 7 and 8 follow a two-year course known as Common Entrance which is linked to the National Curriculum and is at least at the level they would be studying if they were at a senior school for these two years. During their time in Year 8, pupils will need to sit entrance tests for their future school, either the Common Entrance exam in the June of Year 8 (for entry to some of the independent senior schools) or a senior school’s own entry test. Occasionally pupils who have been near misses for grammar school entry at age 11+ can gain entry to a grammar school for Year 9. During Years 7 and 8, individuals can be prepared for a range of scholarships (including academic, music, drama, art or all-rounder) for senior school entry; this is done in consultation with parents.

“Because St Michael’s has helped me blossom, I have managed to become deputy head girl and friends with everyone, including all of the teachers. I have had an amazing time at the school and hope to have just as much fun in my next school.”Philippa North

Awesome trips such as the Jersey tour with Year 8s and select Year 7s add to great brand new experiences and this is just the beginning of so many more for you James Barrett
