    ORIGINAL SCIENTIFIC PAPER

ANNE DANDOLO THE FIRST SERBIAN QUEEN?

    by

    Ivana Komatina Istorijski institut Beograd

Kneza Mihaila 36/II, Beograd, Republika Srbija -mail: [email protected]

SUMMARY: The information that Venetian aristocrat, granddaughter of the famous doge Enrico Dandolo, Anne, married Stephen Nemanji, grand upan of Serbia, and was

  • 22

then crowned with him with royal crown, was brought by later Venetian chronicler Andrea Dandolo. Although this information was not recorded by other sources, not even by Thomas the Archdeacon, who informs us that Stephen Nemanji received a royal crown in 1217, the analysis of sources of Western, Byzantine and domestic origin leads to the conclusion that Anne Dandolo was the first Serbian queen. Letter of Demetrius Chomatenus to Stephen Nemanji clearly indicates that Anne was Stephens third wife. Marriage between Stephen and Anne was concluded in the first half of 1217, followed by the coronation. In the Serbian Sinodicon of Orthodoxy, which was composed at the end of the 13th century, the eternal memory was given to the first Serbian king and queen, Stephen and Anne. The famous fresco in the monastery of Sopoani, Death of Queen Anne, clearly shows that Anne Dandolo survived her husband. Later Serbian rulers from the Nemanji lineage gladly emphasized their kinship with the Venetian doges from the Dandolo family, which was based on the origin of the first Serbian queen.

    ORIGINAL SCIENTIFIC PAPER

CHRISTIANS AS UHUD UL-HAL AT KADI COURTS IN THE OTTOMAN EMPIRE

    by

Ognjen Krei Institute for Balkan Studies SASA

Knez Mihailova 35/IV, Belgrade, Republic of Serbia E-mail: [email protected]

SUMMARY: The kadi courts were among the most important institutions in the Ottoman Empire, with both administrative and judicial responsibilities. Every subject of the Ottoman Sultan, Muslim or non-Muslim, had a right to approach kadi in order to solve a variety of issues. The aim of this paper is to analyze the participation of Christians in the work of the courts as a specific kind of witnesses. Namely, beside the ordinary witnesses in a case, in the Islamic tradition there was another kind of witnesses instrumental witnesses or witnesses of the judiciary act (uhud ul-hal). Their names were recorded at the end of any document issued by judge and their role was to guarantee the validity of the judiciary process. If one or both litigants were Christians, their coreligionists could also be recorded among the uhud ul-hal. Sometimes, they were personally connected to the case, for example as neighbors. In other cases they were chosen among local notables, both clerical and lay. Beside formal, the institution of the uhud ul-hal had its practical importance in the functioning of the judicial courts, mainly as one of the much needed connections between a kadi, appointed by the central government, and the local community. As the religious heterogeneity was a widespread characteristic of the Ottoman society, the presence of the Christians among the members of the uhud ul-hal was a kind of adaptation of the traditional Islamic institutions to the realities existing in the Ottoman lands.

RESETTLEMENT OF FRONTIERSMEN FROM THE RIVERS TISA AND MORI TO BANAT (17511753)

SUMMARY: One of the most massive and organized migrations of the Serbs in the 18th century happened in 1751 and 1752. In this period, more then 12,000 people had been resettled from the territory along the right banks of the rivers Tisa and Mori to the left banks of these rivers, which means from Baka and southern Hungary to Banat. This resettlement was the consequence of demilitarization of the Military Frontier on the Tisa and Mori (the so-called Potisje and Pomorije sections of the Military Frontier), which occured in 1751. Both sections were established in 1702, but they lost their military role as soon as 1718, when southern areas of Banat, Serbia and Little Walachia were acquired. The demilitarization of the Potisje and Pomorije sections of the Military Frontier had been a disputable question for a few decades before it eventually happened.

After Potisje and Pomorije sections of the Military Frontier were abolished in 1751, their frontiersmen were resettled in 15, mostly newly founded, settlements in Banat. These settlements were organized as the Banat Land Militia within 6 companies (so-called Upper Companies): Velika and Mala Kikinda, Melenci and Tara, Mokrin, Jozefova (later Obilievo) and Krstur, Idvor and Leopoldova (enta), Boto, Marinovo Selo (Tomaevac) and Sige (Perlez), Vranjevo, Karlovo (Novo Miloevo) and Kumane. All of these settlements were located in deserted and marshland areas of western Banat, which were, until that moment, administratively submitted to the Districts of Bekerek and anad. Depopulation of western Banat was caused by various reasons, such as plague epidemics (1730, 17381739), fiscal burden, war and presence of domestic army (17371739). According to the survey from the late 1739 and early 1740, plague epidemic caused a disappearance of 36% of adult male population (Contribuenten) in the District of Bekerek, 33.61% in the District of Vrac, 27.21% in the District of akova and 42.31% in the District of Panevo. Beside that, in the war period, the population of Banat escaped because of the conduct of domestic army, which burdened the inhabitants of settlements along their route on the rivers Tisa and Danube. By the year 1740 the devastation of some settlements in the District of Bekerek on the river Tisa, such as Beej and enta, committed by domestic army on its way towards Panevo and Orava was complete.

According to military survey conducted in the end of 1753, in newly founded settlements of the Banat Land Militia there were 1,769 householders, as well as 1,044 married members of households (brothers and sons) and 273 married poor and homeless persons. Accordingly, only adult and physically capable men were registered. This means that in 15 settlements there were 3,113 married individuals as well as families, but the number of households was smaller (2,076), because the households were economic units consisting of 15 married male members. In about 40% of all households there were registered other married members (i.e. brothers and sons) beside the head of a household. In 196 households there were even 25 such members, so 9.44% of all households could be considered as zadruga (joint family). The number of potential zadruga households in the group of officers households was even biger (27%).

Based on surveyed number of adult men in settlements of the Banat Land Militia in 1753, the estimated minimum of the total number of people settled there was 12,000 persons. In the area of 1 km of these settlements there could be found 8.92 persons or one household in the area of 0.79 km. These data confirm the conclusion that the most impor-tant consequence of the demilitarization of Potisje and Pomorije sections of the Military Frontier was the resettlement of their inhabitants in Banat, and not, as it was previously stated in literature, in Russia.

interruptions, contributed to strengthening of the Serbian Principality independency from the Ottoman Empire. As a French student and a state scholarship holder accustomed to both life in the West and Balkan working environment in Belgrade, he had to find his way in the hectic Turkish capital at the crossroads between East and West.

Hristis biggest contribution to the Serbian politics in Constantinople was his ability to talk to all Constantinople representatives of the foreign powers in a friendly way.

Hristis diplomatic missions in Constantinople contributed to the research of the development of Serbian diplomacy from the separate missions to the permanent legations when Serbia became independent from the Ottoman Empire. These missions also depicted diplomatic life in Turkish capital and Turkish diplomatic protocols. It can be concluded that Hristi successfully adapted to the diplomatic life and Constantinople social scene.

    ORIGINAL SCIENTIFIC PAPER

PUBLIC OPINION IN SERBIA ON THE INDEPENDENT STATE OF CROATIA FROM 1941 TO 1944

    by

Nataa Milievi Institute for Contemporary History

Trg Nikole Paia 11, Belgrade, Republic of Serbia E-mail: [email protected]

SUMMARY: The public in Serbia formed its views, opinions and interpretations of the Independent State of Croatia (ISC) during World War II under pressure from Nazi occupiers, censorship and Croatian-German alliance. These constraints eliminated the freedom of public debate and thus the existence of the genuine public typical for free and democratic societies. Therefore, this public is regarded as pseudo public. Throughout the period of occupation, except for the first few months, the official Serbian public was pronouncedly passive, or rather made passive, with regard to the ISC. It could not have been more active because of the strict censorship of the German occupation authorities not allowing public expression of negative or critical opinion of their ally. For that reason, the official Serbian public generally followed various kinds of news about the situation in the ISC, but without the possibility of public expression. It reacted when the circumstances allowed it, or when it suited the German occupiers. It is possible to single out two such cases: a sharp reaction to the treatment of Serbs in the ISC and critical thinking about the changes in Croatian language and literature. Many other news were not commented and some of them were not allowed to appear on the pages of the public media, such as the testimonies of Serbian refugees or conflict between Serbs and Croats in the border zone of the Drina and Sava rivers. Hence, it can be concluded that the silence imposed on the official Serbian public spoke louder than words. Sensitive news, which never saw the daylight, became public secrets that people knew about but were forced to pretend they did not know. Unlike the official public, the unofficial Serbian public was much more active. Due to the lack of clear and detailed information about the situation in the Independent State of Croatia, it was forced to satisfy its need for being informed in different ways. It not only searched for various kinds of news, listened and transmitted information obtained from persons with reliable sources, but also commented and gave the assessment of

  • 89

current news from the public media and newspapers. As a result, the unofficial public was often dominated by rumors or news significantly altered, compared to the original events whether real or not. The number of rumors was so great that it can be said that this part of the public was dominated by noise, which was not publicly heard and not allowed to be heard. The image of the ISC, thus formed in the unofficial public was, in addition to actual knowledge, full of unreliable and confusing news revealing various emotions (fear, resentment, hope, expectations, etc.).
