tones in spoken English

• To understand how the speaker is feeling, listen for four main things:

▲ the volume of the language

▲ a rising or a falling tone▲ stress on certain words

▲ pauses in the sentences

Skills building 3: writing a dialogue When writing a dialogue, you should pay attention to the

following:

◆ Don’t include words like ‘Umm’ or ‘Hmm’ in a dialogue.

◆ Don’t repeat words that have just been said. For example, when one says, ‘Go and sit down.’ The other should use ‘Why?’ instead of ‘Go and sit down.’ or ‘Why should I sit down?’

◆ Use the words the characters say to show their personalities and moods. Don’t say ‘He/ She is very angry.’

Read the dialogue in Part A and in pairs discuss what is wrong with the underlined sentences.

• 1. ‘Umm’ or hmm’ shouldn’t be included in a written dialogue.

• 2. We shouldn’t use ‘My room is too dirty’, ‘My room is a mess’, ‘clean up’ and ‘cleaning’ , because in a written dialogue what has just said shouldn’t be repeated.

• 3. In a written dialogue we should write a sentence that shows the speaker is very angry instead of the sentence ‘I’m really very angry with you’.

Step 3: presenting a dialogue in groups

• Go over the information in this part, write a dialogue between Christina, her mother and the radio host and then to give a performance. You can do this in groups of three.

• C ： That’s true, you see I am sad that Mum missed me. I love Mum and

Dad, but I felt they did boring things. I enjoy spending weekends doing

sports.

• M ： Many times I want to talk to her, but she was always too busy.

• H ： Oh, I think that's a problem between you.

• C ： Maybe. So I called “Talk Time” and got some advice. Then we

decided to do some things together every week.

• M ： Yes. Christina told me about that, and last week we cooked special

dinner for family. Christina helped me and learned how to cook. She was

really enjoyed it.

• H ： That is really a good thing.

• M ： I was so happy that I took Christina and her best friends to a

restaurant for dinner. I enjoyed myself very well.

• C. ： I am so surprised by how much fun we have. I have never

known that before. Now I think of Mum as friend again.

• H ： I’m glad to hear it. As a mother what do you think of the new

situation?

• M: Now I’m very happy. I can have a chance to have a talk with my

daughter heart to heart. What’s more, I’m happy to be on “Talk

Time”. I hope our example can help others.

• H: Yes, I think that will be a good example for the family

who is in trouble like that. Welcome Christina and her

Mum’s coming here again. Now everybody, please give

them warm applause.

• T: A very wonderful dialogue. Because of the limited

time, we have to stop our performing.
