박한우(45) 영남대 언론정보학과 교수가 과학정보학 분야 노벨상으로 불리는 '데릭 솔라 프라이스' 상 후보에 선정돼 수상여부에 관심이 쏠리고 있다.
데릭 솔라 프라이스 상은 현재까지 아시아 국가 수상자가 한 명도 없었으며 박 교수는 올해 아시아 국가에서는 유일하게후보자 명단에 이름을 올렸다.
박 교수는 웹의 계량적 분석을 뜻하는 '웹보메트릭스'와 '빅데이터' 분야의 국내 권위자다. 그는 그동안 웹사이트의 콘텐츠와 하이퍼링크를 통한 사회네트워크 분석을 주제로 100여 편의 논문을 세계 저명학술지에 게재하는 등 탁월한 연구 성과를 내며 주목을 받았다.
특히 2014년에는 64년 동안(1948~2012) 75개국에서 발표된 계량정보학 분야 5417편의 논문을 생산성, 영향력, 협업 측면에서 분석한 결과, 박 교수는 매개중심성(한 개인이 전체 네트워크에서 중개자 역할을 얼마나 잘 수행하는지를 보여주는 지표)순위에서 13위에 오르기도 했다.
박 교수는 이런 성과를 인정받아 SSCI 국제 학술지인 '빅데이터와 사회', '기술예측과 사회변화', '과학계량학' 편집위원으로 활동 중이다.
그는 인터넷에서 소비되는 다양한 정보를 체계적으로 분석하기 위해 글로벌 빅데이터 분야 전문가들로 구성된 '세계트리플헬릭스미래전략학회'를 창립하기도 했다.
한편 '과학계량학의 아버지'로 불리는 '데릭 솔라 프라이스'는 1963년 그의 저서 '작은 과학, 거대 과학', 1965년 세계적인과학 저널 '사이언스'에 게재된 '과학논문 네트워크'를 통해 과학계의 지식 생산과 인용 구조를 규명한 인물로 유명하다.
과학계량학은 학문 분야의 생성과 발전을 연구자들의 형태와 출판물에 근거해 계량적으로 분석하는 '과학의 과학'으로 오늘날 '빅데이터' 탄생에 큰 기여를 했다.
'데릭 솔라 프라이스' 상은 1984년 미국의 유진 가필드가 과학기술논문인용색인(SCI) 데이터베이스를 창립한 공로로 제1회 수상자로 선정됐으며 지금까지 총 18명이 수상했다. 올해 최종 수상자는 이달 15일 결정된다.

Danowski of the University of Illinois–Chicago and Han Woo Park of Yeungnam University found evidence that, in countries where the early uprisings took place, there was a strong association with “increases in radical Islamist concepts in their Web domains.” The scholars say the digital patterns show how the terms “democracy” and “civil society” were “transformed into meanings strongly associated with the Islamist ideology terms Jihad, Sharia, and others,” representing “an unintended consequence of the U.S. and other Western nations’ policies regarding civil society.”
