We expect to learn best practices, strategies, policies of open data, and also share more concrete examples in Korea. Although Korean government has a great success in area of e-government, it is also big obstacle for expanding “open data”. The vision and objectives of OKF can be a good guideline.

Make Korean open data more open, accessible22

Various datasets already exist from government, and more datasets will be opened up in near future. However, these datasets are not shared with other datasets from other countries or communities, because of language, culture issues. OKF Korea aims to solve these limitations and to leverage open data in world-wide.

Make better successful communities of open data33

Individuals and communities are now interested in using open data. However, for expanding their interests to be live well-organized community is necessary. OKF Korea will be a hub for communicating, collaborating, and connecting people who are willing to change their life using open data.

Korean Semantic Web Conference

Web Science WorkgroupLaunched March 2007. A number of events is organized by Web Science Workgroup, including data mash-up camp, web science camp, the Korean Semantic Web Conference.

- Over 200 registered members with various domains- co-organized Open Data Camp 2012 with Creative Commons Korea

- Participated150-200 users annually- Themed by* 2009: Web Science* 2010: Gov 2.0* 2011: Linked Data* 2012: Open Data

- Will be launched on October, officially- Share Datasets with Seoul City (http://data.seoul.go.kr)- Over 1,000 datasets already uploaded- Developed data collectors and clients- Will be organized Open Data Dev Camp (October)

* Translation completed: CKAN 1.8 and Open Data Handbook

Initially, 10~15 members will join OKF Korea, as soon as we have confirmation from OKF.

Vision of Government Open DataConceptual Architecture

“realise significant economic benefits by enabling businesses and non-profit organisations to build innovative applications and websites using public data.”

Data.gov, along with a number of other data-related sites of the government such as USAspending.gov and Apps.gov, are slated to be shut down due to budget cuts. The current annual budget of $37 million will be reduced to $2 million. – (Guardian April 11)
