PASTOR’S PERSPECTIVE Dear Parishioners: I am one of the few people who remain in

movie theaters until the last line of credits and acknowledgements has been shown. I like to know who plays what role, who composes or performs what music, and who contributes to what part of the movie. I feel like I have not seen the whole movie if I leave the theater without this information.

Similarly, when I attend Mass, I like to remain in church until the last word of the recessional hymn is sung. If I ever have to leave the Mass before the Concluding Rite, my conscience would not be at peace. It would feel like I have not participated in the whole Mass. Unfortunately, some people do not feel this way about the Mass.

While the ending credits of a movie are insignificant, the Concluding Rite of the Mass is so important that the whole Mass is named after it. The word “Mass” (Missa) actually comes from the Latin word for “dismissal” (missio). (Can you see the Missa in the dismissal?) The Mass is in fact named after the action that completes it – namely, the dismissal of the assembly.

So, when the priest says “The Mass is ended,” we don’t say “Thanks be to God” because the Mass is finally over, or because we have done our obligation and are now free to leave. Instead, we thank God because we have now been sent to put the Good News into good actions in our daily life. We are not dismissed from the Mass. We are dismissed to the world. We are to go “in peace,” with the confidence that Christ remains with us “until the end of the age” (Mt 28:20). And we are sent “to love and serve the Lord and one another.”

As we celebrate World Mission Sunday this weekend, let us re-dedicate ourselves to the fulfillment of our God-given mission, starting with a full, conscious, and active participation in the Concluding Rite of each Mass, so that we may be “burning with faith, hope, and charity” as we

leave the church “to love and serve the Lord and one another.”

Fr. Vincentius Do, Pastor

ALL SOULS’ DAY As is our custom, we remind everyone to

offer Masses for their deceased family members and friends. Envelopes for All Souls’ Day are now available in church. Please list all the souls you would like to pray for on your envelope. We will keep these names on the high altar, next to the tabernacle, to be prayed for throughout the month of November.
