A new generation of Japanese researchers specialized in Arab and

Islamic or Middle Eastern studies at the beginning of the second half

of the 20th century emerged, most of them completed their studies at

Japanese, American and European universities and mostly influenced

by leftist trends that dominated the cultural circles in Japan in the late

1950s decade. They showed sympathy with the Arab liberation

movement and the struggle of the third world peoples in general. Their

interest emerged in political, economic and social situations in which

the Arab societies lived. Hence, the researchers analyzed the

constitutional systems, development problems and education, and

studied the major problems impeding the construction of the modern

democratic State in the Arab Homeland due to the domination of

    oppression, tyranny and authoritarianism mentality.

Professor Tsugitaka Sato represented the stage of maturity among

the Japanese researchers in his methodology, through the

specialization in the study, his staying away from totalitarian writings,

his staying away from the absolute taking of Orientalist

generalizations, and the ever quest to discover the essence of the

historical truth from its original sources. He also had distinct efforts in

building bridges of cooperation between the Arab specialists

researchers and the Japanese researchers and leading some of the

    important research programs.
