MIRROR Mirror opens with Snow White's mother, the evil Queen Clementianna, telling her story. Her

husband is gone and she rules the kingdom selfishly, holding lavish parties. She considers herself the most beautiful and charming woman in the kingdom, but suspects her stepdaughter Snow White might soon be the fairest of all. So she locks up Snow White for years.

But one day, Snow White manages to escape into the woods. On her way there, she sees the

THE classic fairytale Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs will soon be in theatres in its first-ever live-action film adaptation. However, don't expect it to be predictable: the director and producer have flexed their creative muscles and brought a new and humourous twist to the tale. In Mirror Mirror, Snow White is tough not innocent, the prince is more confused than charming, and the dwarfs are bandits instead of miners.

In the woods, Snow White meets a bunch of short bandits. (In fact, they are the seven dwarfs.) Hugo

Name: HugoScriptwriters: John Logan (screenplay),

AuDIENCES will probably have high expectations of Hugo, the film that won five Oscars for

Best Sound Mixing, Best Sound Editing, Best Art Direction, Best Visual Effects and Best Cinematography. However, these achievements in technology have somewhat cast a shadow on the film's success at storytelling.

The film is adapted from a novel called The Invention of Hugo Cabret, and the plot ponders over matters of fate and chance. The setting of a clock tower, and the many references made to the intricate designs of clockwork make for an interesting allegory of life. While indeed, it is refreshing and simply a

treat to the eyes to get a panoramic view of Paris at night in 3D, the most impressionable part of the film is the way everything fits perfectly into place – just like clockwork.

Though a bit slow paced at times, the story successfully unravels the stories of not just Hugo, the central character, but also the lives and involvement of several characters as we watch their stories intertwine. Each has a role in the destinies of the others.

Some comparisons have been made with Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, the other Oscar-nominated film that was released around the same time. This film is also about a boy who has lost his father, and whose mission it is to complete something that his father had laid out for him in celebration of his life. However, unlike this film, Hugo focuses on the bigger picture, and less on the internal conflicts that the boy faces throughout the struggle.

While we empathise with Hugo throughout the movie, we do not feel

that he is solely a helpless character. Rather, he is simply a lonely boy in search of a friend. Hugo is a more family-friendly film since it takes the perspective of both the child and the old man, and explores issues from friendship and love, to life and loss. There is also something magical about the movie and its choice of comedy that gets the audience collectively holding their breaths while Hugo darts away from his captors again and again.

Martin Scorsese's direction has earned him a well-deserved Golden Globe for Best Director, and the movie surely deserves its universal critical acclaim.

BETWEEN five to eight tropical cyclones are expected to hit Hong Kong this summer, forecasts Shun Chi-ming, director of the

Hong Kong Observatory.Under the influence of La Nina during spring

this year, the Observatory expects that the typhoon season will start in June or earlier.

"Integrating and analysing all the available information, we expect five to eight tropical cyclones to come within 500 km of Hong Kong, which may affect Hong Kong, against the long-term average of six," said Shun in a press conference.

The annual rainfall is expected to be normal to below-normal, ranging from 1,900 to 2,500 millimetres.

As the rainy season approaches, Shun reminded the public of the possible impact from thunderstorms. Meanwhile, the Observatory will closely monitor the weather situation during the course of the year, and conduct a further assessment around mid-year.

To provide weather forecasts of higher resolution, the Observatory will adopt two weather icons instead of one when a change in weather is expected. For example, when the weather is expected to change

from fine to rainy, two icons will be used to highlight the weather change. In addition, the Observatory will explore ways to provide a more detailed forecast for the first few days of the seven-day forecast.

A h i g h e r r e s o l u t i o n i P a d v e r s i o n o f 'MyObservatory', a personalised weather service developed by the Observatory in early 2010, which can be found on the Observatory's website as well as on iPhone and Andriod platforms, is now available. Users can use it to look for the latest weather information from the weather stations closest to them.

A new product for 'MyObservatory' featuring a location-specific rainfall forecast for the next couple of hours is also in the pipeline for this year.

The Observatory's website will also provide 'special weather tips' on its front page to better alert the public to impending inclement weather.

Last year, the Observatory launched the mobile application, MyWorldWeather, for the iPhone platform. MyWorldWeather is the world's first weather service for people on the move, automatically providing official weather forecasts for the city nearest to the user. The Observatory also broke new ground by disseminating quick earthquake messages through Twitter and Weibo to the public around 10 minutes after the occurrence of strong earthquakes.

Four beached sperm whales die despite rescue efforts

FOUR sperm whales were con f i r me d dead a d ay after they were stranded

on a beach in east China's Jiangsu Province despite rescue efforts.

The whales were first found alive on the beach of Xintan Salt Field, Yancheng in the early morning on March 16, local authorities said.

Local authorities carried out five rescue plans, which included pulling the whales back out to sea using helicopters and large vessels, and digging water channels to refloat them. However, all plans

failed due to the large size and poor physical condition of the whales.

Among the four whales, the heaviest weighed 30 to 40 tonnes, and the lightest weighed nearly 20 tonnes.

Two lo c a l r e s id e n t s we r e detained for allegedly cutting pieces of flesh from the whales, which were guarded by local f i s h e r y a n d b o r d e r c o n t r o l departments before reaching any final disposal decisions.

Th is was the second mass beaching of whales reported in

China, following an incident in 1985 when six whales died of beaching in Fujian province.

According to Xu Xinrong, a senior animal researcher with the Nanjing Normal University, mass beaching of wha les was a na t u ra l phenomenon and it was hard to find the exact cause.

Discussion

Several mass beachings of sea animals have been observed since early this year. In your opinion, what might have caused this phenomenon?

Do you agree that money can buy happiness? To you, what are the most important factors for improving one's well-being and quality of life?

WHeTHeR or not money can buy happiness, people worldwide seem to think

it can, at least according to a new poll that canvassed respondents in two dozen countries.

Nearly two-thirds of about 20,000 people surveyed said they "need to live better," the survey by market research company Ipsos showed that one-third felt their life was fine the way it was.

Given a list of factors for improving their well-being and quality of life, 89

per cent said a stronger economy in their country was very or somewhat important – the top response.

Better l iving conditions and stronger family relationships were named by 84 per cent, while only 56 per cent listed finding a romantic partner, and 49 per cent included meditation or prayer.

Lifestyle factors such as eating better, sleeping or exercising more and finding new challenges were also placed high.

Responses from nations as far-f lung as Brazil, Saudi Arabia, Russia, Sweden, Germany, South Africa, Hungary, India, Japan and Mexico varied widely, according to the poll.

Hungarians were mostly likely to say they needed to live better, with 89 per cent agreeing, while Saudi Arabians were the most likely to say their lives were fine as they were, followed by those from India and Sweden. – Reuters

Apple's new iPad much hotter than prior model, tests reveal

APPLe Inc's new iPad throws off a lot more heat than the previous version, lending

weight to complaints on Internet forums that the hot-selling tablet computer can get uncomfor tably warm after heavy use, an influential consumer watchdog found af ter running tests.

Consu mer Repor t s , a widely followed group that reviews everything f rom elect ron ics to ca rs , found

that Apple's new tablet racked up temperatures of 47 degrees Celsius after 45 minutes of running an intense action game using a thermal imaging camera to ascertain the front and rear of the tablet – up to eight degrees C hotter than the previous model under similar conditions.

T h e g r o u p , w h i c h c a n b e instrumental in the success or failure of consumer products, has not reached a final decision on whether

to recommend the latest model of Apple's tablet. A spokesman urged caution on the part of consumers but added the heat issue in itself did not appear serious enough to void its recommendation. – Reuters

HUNKY Taiwanese pop star Show Luo's long-awaited album, 9ood Show, finally hits the shelves in April. Sung in Mandarin, the album is Luo's ninth.

BEST friends Rihanna and Perry have worked together on many projects in the past, but somehow the chance to create a song together

has eluded them so far. Nevertheless, said Perry, they "planted the seed [of the idea] two years ago" and haven't given up on it. She said they aim to make it "iconic".

When asked how long it would be until the song is ready, Perry replied, "How disappointed would you be if that song came out and it's no good? Sometimes you have to wait for greatness."

Meanwhile, Rihanna has confirmed their plans, and praised Perry for being "very uncalculating, very sure of herself". She added that it is "very rare in this industry to find" such qualities.

It seems the public will have to wait a while for these two busy superstars to find time in their schedules to record together. If their recent hits, 'We Found Love' by Rihanna and 'Firework' by Katy Perry are anything to go by, we can expect their collaboration to produce an energetic and powerful dance hit. But for now, fans will just have to be patient.

It's time for a 'Good Show'!

GLOBETROTTER Ian Wright is back for a second season of his unique travel show. In Invite Mr Wright 2, he visits Vietnamese tribes, Himalayan mountains, the rugged Australian outback and more. But don't expect him to stay in five-star hotels. Instead, he lives in the homes of locals and learns what it is really like to live, work and play in their country.

MR Wright kicks off the season by living with a football club called Ryuku FC in Okinawa

and becomes their mascot. A challenging task awaits him – representing the team at their pivotal qualifying match.

In Sumatra, Indonesia, he stays with environmental conservationists looking to save local rainforests from destruction by industry. They go in search of the elusive orang-utan, and on the remote Bankaru island, Wright has the privilege of watching a turtle from an endangered

species lay her eggs. The tough and daring Diwell family

invites Wright to stay with them in Darwin, Australia. Here, he takes part in spine-chilling activities like feeding crocodiles, and goes mud-track racing with Darwin's men's mud racing club.

In his last stop, Singapore, Mr Wright learns a totally different sort of cooking. His teacher is none other than celebrity chef Justin Quek, who creates impressive meals at the ultra-luxurious Marina Bay Sands Hotel.

TURNING up the hype in mid-March, the music video of You Wo Zai (Count on Me) from 9ood Show was launched. The video swiftly found its

way to social networking sites and was widely shared, thanks to its unique beat, catchy chorus and dramatic storyline. It has set the social media abuzz, and 32-year-old Luo's well-established fan base now eagerly awaits the release of the album.

The video is set in a city that has gone through a disaster, with collapsed buildings and missing people. Scenes of the aftermath are interspersed with Luo as a fearless hero whom people can count on. His well-known dance skills are also part of the video.

Also making waves on the Internet are Luo's striking promotional posters for 9ood Show. They show Luo in a variety of images, with the end of the world as the theme – creating a similar feel to that presented in the You Wo Zai video.

In one of the images, Luo is depicted as an angel with battered wings, standing in the midst of a devastated area, where everything has collapsed and been reduced to rubble. The producer reportedly spent HK$500,000 on the posters – certainly not a small sum.

With all that hype, and with all that money having been poured into Luo's new album, there are no doubt plenty of people hoping it'll be a big hit.

TWO of today's biggest chart-topping singers, Rihanna and Katy Perry, have revealed plans to collaborate – and promise to deliver something amounting to "greatness".
