Learning to Look for the Topic

Why do we read?

Two main reasons for reading:

One is for enjoyment (pleasure).

The other is for information (knowledge)!

For most high school teachers and students:

Knowledge > Enjoyment

Topics in High School Textbooks

• Culture

• Music

• Literature

• Technology

• Science

• Nature

• History………….

The main reason for reading through different topics:

Getting information

(knowledge)

•短的、一般長度的 Reading, 如課文、考試題目 : Skim and Scan 找出 Topic•長的 Reading, 如小說 : SQ3R 找出 Topic

SQ3R 即： Survey ( 審視 ) Question ( 提問 )

Read ( 閱讀 ) Recall ( 回想 ) Review ( 複習 )

*SSR

= Silent Sustained Reading

* Extensive Reading

* Good readers read different kinds of text

differently.

* Good readers think about the authors of the text.

* Good readers integrate their prior knowledge with material in the text.

* Good readers try to determine the meaning of unfamiliar words and concepts in the text.

• Bottom-up vs. Top-down

• Interactive v.s. Transactional

• Part-to-whole vs Whole-to-part

• Predicting

• Questioning

• Clarifying

• Summarizing
