*江戸の夕映(えどのゆうばえ)Edo no Yubae – A Shin (new) Kabuki play called ‘The Sunset
of Edo’, written for Kabuki by 大佛次郎 Osaragi Jirō (4 October 1897 – 30 April 1973) and
premiered for the first time in March 1953 (昭和 28)年3 starring Ichikawa Danjūrō XI (at
the time known as Ichikawa Ebizô IX) as Honda Koroku, 尾上松緑 Onoe Shōroku II as Dōmae
Daikichi and 尾上梅幸 Onoe Baikō VII as the Geisha Oriki.
The play is set in the latter stages of the Boshin Wars (Japanese civil war between Imperial and Shōgunate forces, 1868-1869) at around the time of the last battle, the Hakodate Sensō 函館戦争, between the Imperial Forces of the Meiji and the band of the samurai warriors remaining loyal to the last of the 徳川 Tokugawa 将軍 Shōguns, 慶喜 Yoshinobu. Its autumn 1869 and the warships of Viscount Enomoto Takeaki 榎本 武揚 are anchored off Shinagawa preparing to leave for Hakodate.
