COMMEMORATION OF ST. GREGORY THE ILLUMINATOR’S SONS AND GRANDSONS – STS. ARISTAKES, VRTANES, HOUSIK,

GRIGORIS AND DANIEL On Saturday, our church commemorated the feast of St. Gregory the Illumi-nator’s Sons and Grandsons. Aristakes was St. Gregory the Illuminator’s youngest son. He led a monastic life from a very early age. He was conse-crated a bishop by his father, and became one of St. Gregory’s most valued supporters. In 325 A.D. he participated in the First Ecumenical Council of Nicaea, representing the first Catholicos and the entire Armenian Church. Following St. Gregory the Illuminator, he became Catholicos of All Armeni-ans. He was killed in 333 A.D. Vrtanes was St. Gregory the Illuminator’s elder son. Housik was the younger son of Vrtanes. The sons and grandsons of St. Gregory the Illumi-nator are remembered and commemorated by all Armenian Churches throughout the world for their service to the Church, their faithfulness to Christianity, and their commitment to the Armenian people.

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE READINGS The first reading is from the First Letter of Paul to the Corinthians 6:18-7:11 Shun fornication! Every sin that a person commits is outside the body; but the fornicator sins against the body itself. Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, which

Page 3: ¶ ÎÇõñ³Ï¿ ½ÏÝÇ ì³ñ¹³í³éÇ Third Sunday after Transfiguration for St. Gregory... · 2016. 7. 14. · parishioners should participate in any fund raising drive

you have from God, and that you are not your own? For you were bought with a price; therefore glorify God in your body. Now concerning the matters about which you wrote: “It is well for a man not to touch a woman.” But because of cases of sexual immoral-ity, each man should have his own wife and each woman her own husband. The husband should give to his wife her conjugal rights, and likewise the wife to her husband. For the wife does not have au-thority over her own body, but the husband does; likewise the hus-band does not have authority over his own body, but the wife does. Do not deprive one another except perhaps by agreement for a set time, to devote yourselves to prayer, and then come together again, so that Satan may not tempt you because of your lack of self-control. This I say by way of concession, not of command. I wish that all were as I myself am. But each has a particular gift from God, one having one kind and another a different kind. To the unmarried and the widows I say that it is well for them to re-main unmarried as I am. But if they are not practicing self-control, they should marry. For it is better to marry than to be aflame with passion. To the married I give this command—not I but the Lord—that the wife should not separate from her husband (but if she does separate, let her remain unmarried or else be reconciled to her husband), and that the husband should not divorce his wife. The second reading is from the Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ accord-ing to Matthew 19:3-12 Some Pharisees came to him, and to test him they asked, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for any cause?” He answered, “Have you not read that the one who made them at the beginning ‘made them male and female,’ and said, ‘For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall be-come one flesh’? So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.” They said to him, “Why then did Moses command us to give a certificate of dismissal and to divorce her?” He said to them, “It was because you were so hard-hearted that Moses allowed you to divorce your wives, but from the beginning it was not so. And I say to you, whoever divorces his wife, except for unchastely, and marries another commits adul-tery.”

Dear Parishioners: We are excited to let you know of the progress we have made in building the Harry and Edna Ke-leshian Hall. See attached pictures of the work done: location of the new playground is complete, and the 18 parking spaces and the build-ing is in progress. It will be ready for when we have our picnic and many activities are planned in this area for our chil-dren at the picnic. For the New Hall structure: By early-August we should be ready to have structure delivered to site. As you know we will need to raise $700,000 to complete the project. Harry always encouraged us to donate through a matching process, as he firmly believed that ALL parishioners should participate in any fund raising drive. In 2014, Harry pledged that he would increase his donation by 60% by matching up to $200,000 of any addi-tional funds we raised for the Hall. Let¹s not lose this special pledge to get us to our goal. It is never too late to add to your donation and again we appreci-ate anything you can do to help us create this hall for our future generations. God bless you and your family!

Catherine Papalian, Dorothy Koresian, Haykanush Sadoyan (Der Hayr’s mother)

as well as all the sick and recovering members of our community.

May God touch His faithful servants with His healing hand, and grant them good health & recovery.

Please inform Der Hayr if you have friends or family who are suffering any physical or spiritual distress and are in need of prayer, and he will add them to his prayer list where they will be remembered before “the Holy and

Immortal Lamb of God” during the Eucharist. We all need prayer – both to say for others and to be said for us.

Fuller Center for Housing in Armenia (FCHA) celebrated their 5th year anniversary in 2013. This commemoration marked an important milestone not only for the FCHA, but also for the Republic of Arme-nia. Since its inception in 2008, FCHA has built or renovated hundreds of safe and decent homes for needy families in remote regions of Arme-nia.. The anniversary also marked the completion of its 250th home. During the summer of 2013, this home (now the residence of the Mar-garyan family in the village of Ujan) was dedicated and blessed by local clergy. Members of St. Gregory the Enlightener Armenian Church in White Plains, NY sponsored the construction of this house. Dedicated and faithful Parish members, inspired by (the late) Harry Keleshian and his wife, Edna Keleshian have set a goal of “10 houses in 10 years”. Right on track, 2016 will mark completion of St. Gregory the Enlightener’s 5th sponsored house since fundraising began 5 years ago!

Everyone is invited to join us at our annual All-American BBQ to benefit FCHA on Saturday,
