Chicago has a reputation as one of the best big cities in the United States for bicycling. The City of Chicago has worked hard to achieve this goal by investing in bicycling infrastructure and promoting education, awareness and advocacy through the program.

Chicago currently has more than 200 miles of on-street protected, buffered and shared bike lanes, many miles of off-street paths (including the 18.5-mile Lakefront Trail), many are at the CTA rail stations for easy access.

The Chicago Streets for Cycling Plan 2020 calls for a 645-mile network of biking facilities to be in place by year 2020 to provide a bicycle accommodation within half-mile of every Chicagoan. The plan sets forth a comprehensive strategy to achieve Mayor Emanuel’s goal of making Chicago the best big city for bicycling in America. “Bike sharing is another transportation option available to ensure that Chicagoans can safely and efficiently travel around the city's neighborhoods,” Mayor Rahm Emanuel.

The plan was developed through a community process, and it identifies a network of on-street bike paths that will allow cyclists to feel more safe and comfortable riding on city streets. The main objective of the program is to provide a bicycle accommodation within half-mile of every Chicagoan.

Since the launch of the program Divvy has placed thousands of bikes at hundreds of stations across Chicago neighborhoods. Each station has a touchscreen kiosk, station map, and a docking system that releases bikes using a Member key or ride code, and Divvy annual memberships can be purchased online at www.DivvyBikes.com. Plans are in the works to extend the service area to the south and west sides, as well as two suburbs, with the addition of 75 new bike stations and nearly 1,000 bikes in summer 2016.

The system is dubbed “Divvy” to reflect the nature of bike share, where members “divide and share” the use of the bikes. The bicycles’ distinctive “Chicago Blue” paint is the same color as the stripes on the Chicago city flag.
