Walking Out from the Valleys of Life
1. The Lord has Interceded for Us Before We Fail (Mat. 26:31, Luk. 22:31-34) Jesus reminded Peter in advance that the enemy would come and make them stumble and their faith will be tested. Peter would have denied Jesus three times before the rooster crowed. Jesus had already interceded for Peter in this matter as Jesus did not want Peter to lose his faith. However, Peter was ignorant, he was self-righteous that he would not betray Jesus. He confidently boasted of his willingness to go to prison and to die for Jesus. God will, through circumstances and other people, enable us to realize our own pride and weaknesses. Let us not assume more ability than we have, else we might just as well stumble like Peter, and left the Lord and the Church when facing temptation.
2. Still Being Loved though Stumbled (Mat. 26:69-74, Luk. 22:61-62)
After Jesus was arrested, Peter followed after Him afar off. Peter however was recognized as a partner to Jesus. Peter with his heart filled with fear, fearful of arrest, he denied Jesus three times just as Jesus had warned him. As it happened, Jesus looked at Peter intensely. Peter remembered what Jesus had prophesized and felt deeply ashamed and stumbled out to weep. Peter realized his pride and weakness, that he was not as determined and brave. Peter in this stumbling truly got to know about himself.
3. Healing Transforms Valleys into Highlights (Joh. 21:15-17)
The disciples experienced Jesus’ arrest, crucifixion, and resurrection within a short time span, which was to them difficult to accept. After Jesus was resurrected, he did not stay as often with his disciples. They inevitably felt lost, so Peter returned to his fishing career. Jesus appeared to them again by the sea, and they caught 153 big fish. Jesus asked Peter three times “Do you love Me?” In His first two questions Jesus used the word Agape (sacrificial love) on Peter and Peter responded with Phileo love (friend’s love). But on the 3rd question Jesus used Phileo, and Peter responded that he would love Jesus likewise. As Peter denied Jesus three times, so Jesus asked Peter three times if he loved him. It was Jesus’ way to healing Peter’s heart of self-blame, shame and pains, a way of comforting and restoring Peter. Although Peter’s love remained at the Phileo level, Jesus’ love for him remained unchanged, and again called Peter to arise to look after the sheep. Thus Peter was healed and restored. His heart was now ready to receive the outpouring of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. God empowered him to walk out of his failure and later became the key leader in the early Church in Jerusalem. Likewise God hopes that we can boldly face our weaknesses, be willing to be touched and healed by Him so that we, like Peter, are able to walk out from our dark valleys with God’s help. Personal and Family Jesus came to save the lost. Now, Jesus has given us the heavenly authority to save the lost for Him continuously. Let us pray with faith for our non-believing family members, relatives, and friends, and declare the outcomes that we desire to see. Nation and Pandemic 1) Nation and politics – declare in unity at this critical time that the authority of
Jesus rules in Malaysia, that His justice and power be released on the earth! In the name of Jesus, we take up the authority to bind the works of the enemy (e.g. injustice, rebellion, betrayal, greed, selfishness, brutality etc.).
2) Nation and economy – may God grant us wisdom, righteousness and creativity to have breakthroughs in the economic crisis. Ask for mercy and grace of God to come upon the people in difficulties, job loss and poverty.
3) Pandemic of other nations – that people would come to repentance through this pandemic and truly know the will of God. Declare that the will of God be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Church and Gospel 1) Spiritual life – pray for the faith of brothers, sisters and new believers, that we
would keep following God and not turn away from the righteous path. 2) Spreading of the gospel – may the fire of revival burns in us and sends us to
make disciples of all nations!
