Sports adds morethan wins, losses

T he next 25 pages contains the pictures of 29 varsity winter sports teamsfrom all of Sullivan County’s eight school districts. There are severalmore teams which we couldn’t get in front of a camera, which would

bring that total to 34 teams. That translates into approximately 500 varsity athletes competing in inter-

scholastic sports competition this season. That is a terrific number. Andwhile less than a handful will go on to play organized sports in college, we feelhigh school sports is an integral part of our children’s education and devel-opment.

Competition, striving to improve and learning how to interact with othersare all important elements in our children’s education.

We commend these students for putting in the time and effort which isneeded to be on a varsity team and also applaud the parents for the manymissed meals, late nights and dedication it takes to keep your child playing.

Many of our young athletes will not appreciate their days on the hardwoodor at the track until much later in life. But rest assured, it will be an experiencewhich will certainly help mold you into a better person…hopefully a personwith meaningful values instilled by your coaches, parents and friends.

We know full well the tremendous sacrifice it takes to succeed at anythingand while many times wins and losses get in the way of the true score, weknow full well that all our student-athletes in this section are winners.

Keep up the good work and don’t ever give up!

‘We have a lot ofyoung players soit's going to take

some time to get where wewant to be,” Eldred girls bas-ketball coach Ryan Jasper saidabout his team prior to theseason.

But Jasper feels hopeful.“We're going to have to workextremely hard early on to becompetitive, but if we reboundwell and we defend at a highlevel consistently we will besuccessful.”

He felt the team had to workhard to improve on last year’srecord of 4-14 and to contendfor the league title.

“We have a mix of seniorsand sophomores/freshmenwith nothing in between (nojuniors) so we need to get used

to playing together. KelseyCollins, Jess Schips, SamBanghart and Nicole Elvingive us some good size upfront so hopefully we can usethat to our advantage.”

When asked about possibleweaknesses in the team,Jasper explained, “Ourstrength will be our defenseand our weakness will be theinexperience of the youngerplayers.

“We’re still learning the newsystem for the older ones buttime will help with both ofthose things so it should be anexciting season. We hope toimprove on last year’s recordand continue working hardand improving each day.”

He continued, “In the backcourt we’re going to be prettyyoung – but very talented with

Jordan Lepes, Kate Reiser,Sheila and Jenna Burns, andRebecca Morgan, who’s cur-rently out with an A/C separa-tion. We hope to get her backat some point. Hannah Bis-land is coming back frommajor knee surgery and new tothe team is Destinee Arnoldwho transferred from Hones-dale High School.”

Key losses to last year’s grad-uation are, Kayla Kelly, StephLee, Abby Ellert, and ErinAngus.

Fallsburg boys’ are young and determinedBY ELI RUIZ

Though Fallsburg boys’ basket-ball coach Pete Dworetsky lostnine players to graduation last

year, and carries a thin, young rosterof only eight total players this sea-son, the eighth-year coach is stilllooking to make his fourth straightsectional appearance.

Comprised of three seniors, onejunior, three sophomores and afreshman, Dworetsky’s squad is cer-tainly young, but as the coach says,“all eight of my guys bring somethingvery unique to the table and as longas I see improvement on a day-to-day and game-to-game basis, I thinkwe’ll be just fine.”

Key returners for the Cometsinclude guard Nick Pinder, guardJeremiah Fannings and centerAhmad Shomo.

Though Shomo didn’t see muchtime last season – due to academicissues – according to Dworetsky,“he’s back this season with a newattitude and he’s been outstandingfor us thus far.”

A versatile athlete on the court witha deadly jump-shot and presence

underneath, the Comets will bedepending on Shomo more thanever this season. “He can play theguard position and pretty muchevery position on the court,” saysDworetsky.

Along with Shomo, Pinder andFannings, Dworetsky also namespoint guard Brandon Berardi as akey player this season. And with a 3-1 record thus far, the Comets seemprimed to make that fourth sectionalappearance.

But Dworetsky – never one to getahead of himself – remains ground-ed: “We are a really young team thisseason without much experience,”he says. “We’re really just looking toget better and better every day. We’dlove to make sectionals again butnumber one is academics and tobecome better players.”

Lady Cometshoping for

‘banner’ seasonBY ELI RUIZ

Having reached the first round ofsectional competition last sea-son, first-year Fallsburg girls’

basketball coach Lucile Carter-Harris islooking to achieve even more this sea-son.

Having lost eight players from last sea-son’s squad to graduation, Carter-Harrissays her key players to watch this sea-son are returning starters Nyasia Harris(center) and Tiffany Sutim (pointguard).

Losses to graduation and an early sea-son 1-3 record notwithstanding, Carter-Harris maintains some lofty goals forher team this season.

“I’m looking for us to reach sectionalsagain this season and for us to clinchthat sectional title,” she said. “I’m look-ing for day-to-day improvement, butwe’ve never had a girls’ banner to hangin our gym. I’d really love for us to final-ly get that first banner this season.”

The Liberty’s boys basketball program hada tough season last year (3-13, 0-6 OCIAA)and coach Dave Slater is simply looking

for game-to-game improvement from hisyoung team this season.

So far this season, the Indians have posted a1-3 record and says Slater, “we’re a young teamand we’re hoping to grow and mature as theseason progresses. It’s going to be a game-by-game progression, but I’m looking for us tobuild as a team and win some more games[than last season].”

According to Slater, his top returning playersare seniors Chris Santiago and Julian Spina.Another player to watch, says Slater, is StephenJohnson.

“Last season was tough,” offered Slater. “Thisseason I’m happy to improve game by game, and we’ll just have to see how the season endsup.”

Despite slow start, LadyIndians eye sectionals

STORY AND PHOTOS BY ELI RUIZ

The Lady Indians basketballteam finished last season witha 6-12 record overall.

But with returning All-Leagueseniors Tea Williams and ErinKinne, coach Beth Quatrale is look-ing for a sectionals run in 2013-14.

With both Williams and Kinnerunning the floor at the forwardposition, the Indians have struggledto a 1-4 record thus far.

“We found ourselves in tightgames against O’Neill and SullivanWest to start the season, but in bothcases we came up on the short end,”offered Quatrale.

Even so, Quatrale sees a lot ofpotential in her squad and blamesthe early loses to fundamentals: notconverting open lay ups as well asshots in the paint. “Once we can putthose chip shots in the basket, I

believe we will find ourselves in amuch better position to win somemore basketball games,” saysQuatrale.

Freshman Savannah Reck is start-ing at the all-important point guardposition this season, and accordingto Quatrale, “she’s been doing agreat job of handling the pressure ofbeing a varsity point guard in herdebut varsity season.”

With a sophomore at center, it’s amix of old and new for the LadyIndians this season; a season whereQuatrale says she’s looking for con-sistent improvement from hersquad.

“As a team we’re looking to get bet-ter every single day,’ says the fifthyear coach. “Whether it be in prac-tice or in a game, we’re looking formarked improvement out there. Thegirls are coming together very nicely

not only as a team but as a ‘family.’“We preach to the girls the impor-

tance of being a family unit on andoff the court. With plenty of gamesto still be played, we have our eyesset on making sectionals. We know

that this means we will need to pullout a few big wins. But I believe thatwith a bit of tenacity and heart, wehave what it takes to make a nicerun towards sectionals from here onout.”

WELCOME TO THE HOME OF THE LIVINGSTON MANOR WILDCATS

BY ANYA TIKKA

Livingston Manor’s boys’ basket-ball coach Charles Hicks has bigexpectations of his young team.

“We’re hoping to win our divisionand make a run for the section title,”he explained.

His expectations are based onrecent history. Although last year’srecord was 6-12, the previous yearHicks took his team all the way to thestate final four. The team’s recordthen was 16-5.

So what happened?“I graduated 12 seniors [in 2012],”

Hicks recounted, “and only tworeturned last year.”

“We may not be young in age, butyoung in sports,” he continued.

Looking ahead, Hicks will be count-ing on juniors Matt Janik and

Terrance Lockhart, both starters ayear ago. Another key player is seniorcenter David Dutcher, who also sawquite a lot of playing time last year.

“We’re still playing up,” Hicks said.“We’re a little low – the graduation [in2012] hurt us, losing that many. Thisis still a transition period.

“We know what to expect, we’reyoung, working hard, and haveexpectations,” he continued.

Hicks is starting his 11th year as avarsity coach. He knows what it willtake to get back to the state final four.

“You have to have a mix,” heexplained. “Kids who buy into theprogram, have athletic ability andskill level and a desire to win.” He alsomentioned a good supportive atmos-phere that fosters sports helps.

Sullivan West… young but gameBY FRED STABBERT III

‘We started out kind ofslow,” third year SullivanWest Boys Basketball

Head Coach Bruce Nober said. “Butwe definitely played our best game ofthe year at James I. O’Neill.”

The Bulldogs were tied at the end of

the first quarter and down by onlythree at the half before losing to thetough O’Neill squad in their firstleague game of the season.

And Sullivan West hoped to pick upits first win of the season last night onthe road at Liberty in a class rivalryshowdown.

But weather, holiday, illnesses andother circumstances have kept play-ers sidelined all season.

“I’m looking forward to getting thewhole team together,” Nober said.“The junior class is really strong. They have Ronj Padu, Brian Stauchand Richard Shevak, all of whom

played last year. Two seniors, Chance Bibbo and

Owen Andrews, also return to thesquad from a year ago.

But two big losses, three-point spe-cialist Matt Cardona, and feisty pointguard Sawyer Erlwein left two holesto fill which will take time to replace.

Excellence in the Classroom and in Athletics

13834

In discussing 2014 sectional play with Tri-Valleyboys’ varsity coach Brian Tingley, he quicklyexpressed the fact that "I would be disappointed

if we don't make it into the sectionals this year." Several of the players anticipate a good season.

The team last season won their first game in the sec-tionals against Chester and finished with a 12-8record. They lost their sectional semifinal game toPine Plains, who at the time were ranked No. 1 in thestate in Class C.

When asked what the team looked like at this earlystage of the season Tingley said, “we should be quickif nothing else.” He pointed out that he has a very fastteam and that “they work well together, pass the ballwell and they like to be around each other.”

Tingley stressed that rebounding will be key to histeam’s success, both offensive and defensive. He saidhe wants to see more shot blocking.

When asked about the offense Tingley said, “wehave the speed here to get up and down the courtand we got some guys that can play inside, playersthat can shoot outside and we have guys who canalso handle the ball."

Returning players from last years team includeAlex Brown, Devin Donnelley, Mike Post, SamTingley, Donntae Brock and Jesus Lozada. Movingup from the undefeated JV team are JustinSwarthout, Jarred James, Dion Lynch, Zach Nilson,

Stephen Carleton and Thomas Mungeer. Movingonto the varsity team from his position as team man-ager is Kainin Justiniano. Tingley noted that a newtransfer student would be trying out for a team posi-tion and that the squad will consist of 12 or 13 play-ers.

While talking about the varsity team being able toacquire some of last year’s undefeated JV team,Tingley pointed out, “they will find it different when

coming up to the varsity level because up here youcan't overpower people and the scouting is better.”

In conversation about sectional play Tingley noted,“it’s not going to be easy for us because Chester isgoing to have a very good team as they didn’t loseany important players and they also had a very goodJV team that will add to their strength.”

He also feels that Seward should also be a toughopponent.

Way To Go Teams!!

STORY AND PHOTO BY ED TOWNSEND

The Tri-Valley girls’ basketballteam is off to a 6-0 start andranked No. 4 in the state. They

won the Lady Raider Holiday tourna-ment for the first time by defeatingtwo Class AA schools in Minisink Val-ley and Middletown.

Jason Closs is the new coach mov-ing up from the Tri-Valley boys’ juniorvarsity where his team last seasonposted a perfect 16-0 undefeatedrecord. This will be his fourth year ofcoaching on the varsity level and hebrings to the court 12 total years ofcoaching.

When asked if there were any differ-ence between coaching a boys’ juniorvarsity team and a girls’ varsity team,he said, “I went from a boys team lastyear that worked very hard, reallypracticed well and was very coach-able and now I’ve moved to a girlsprogram this year at the varsity levelwith athletes that are very similar towhat I had last year.”

In looking at the upcoming seasonbefore the unbeaten start, Closssensed he had a strong team.

“These girls are hard-working, theyhave been well-coached in the past byformer coach John Tenbus and is

eager to be coached."Returning players from last year’s

team include three-point scorer Kat-lynn Greffrath, scrappy hustlingguard Caroline Martin, SabrinaSmith, Colleen Jones, and AshleyExner. New varsity members includeKayla Butler, Sara Dertinger, Grace

Kelly, Jessie Leszczynski andDanielle Shafarsky.

Closs said that the strengths of theteam are, “their work rate, condition-ing, getting up and down the court

and working their fast breaks. ChuckReynolds, head coach of Minisink Val-ley will certainly attest to their quick-ness and speed as “they ran us anddown the court” during the Lady Hol-iday tournament.

“Conditioning is very important tous as it allows us to play the type ofbasketball that we want to play whichis to get up and down and to get intoteams on defense and dictate how thegame is played,” Closs added.

Closs said the team is “very guardheavy and we are undersized at ourforward positions but they will bephysical.”

The varsity girls’ team has made thesectionals the past three years butcoach Closs didn’t give a predictiondespite the impressive start. “We’regoing to take it one game at a timeand I told the girls early on let’s notthink what we can do, let’s get busydoing.”
