Results Released

Results notices of the 2019 Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education Examination

(HKDSE) will be issued tomorrow (10 July) by the Hong Kong Examinations and

Assessment Authority (HKEAA).

This year, a total of 48,305 school candidates and 7,854 private candidates entered the

HKDSE. The total candidature has decreased by 4.8% from last year.

Among the 47,005 day school candidates from 437 day schools, 89% registered for two to

three elective subjects in addition to the four core subjects, namely Chinese Language,

English Language, Mathematics and Liberal Studies.

A total of 32,600 day school candidates obtained level 2 or above in five subjects, including

Chinese Language and English Language. This represents 71.8% of day school candidates,

which is comparable to last year. These candidates are eligible to apply for local sub-degree

programmes and relevant civil service posts.

The percentage of day school candidates who have met the general entrance requirements

for local undergraduate degree programmes is 42.2%, which is the same as last year. These

19,728 day school candidates obtained level 3 or above in both Chinese Language and

English Language, and level 2 or above in Mathematics Compulsory Part and Liberal

Studies.

This year, 87.3% of day school candidates attained level 2 or above in Chinese Language,

an increase of 1.2% as compared to last year, while 57.9% and 10.5% were awarded level 3

or above and level 5 or above respectively, both showing increases from last year’s figures.

In English Language, 79.0% and 53.8% of day school candidates obtained level 2 or above

and level 3 or above respectively, which are similar to 2018. The percentage of day school

candidates achieving level 5 or above is 9.7%, which shows a slight increase of 0.7% as

compared to last year.

In Mathematics Compulsory Part, 81.3% of day school candidates attained level 2 or above,

representing a decrease of 1.2%, while 14.7% achieved level 5 or above, which is 0.8%

higher than that of last year.

The performance of candidates in Liberal Studies has improved across the board when

compared to last year, with 91.4% of day school candidates obtaining level 2 or above and

10.4% achieving level 5 or above, representing increases of 2.4% and 3.2% respectively.

In addition to the 24 Category A subjects, the HKDSE also offers 35 Category B Applied

Learning subjects and six Category C Other Language subjects this year.

Candidates who took Category B Applied Learning subjects (excluding Applied Learning

Chinese) achieved ‘Attained’ or above in 92.8% of the 3,445 subjects assessed, which has

dropped by 0.8% from last year. Among these subjects, 27.4% and 8.2% were awarded

‘Attained with Distinction (I)’ or above and ‘Attained with Distinction (II)’ respectively, both

are slightly higher than those of last year.

A total of 388 candidates sat Category C Other Language subjects this year. These

subjects were examined using the Advanced Subsidiary (AS) level question papers from

Cambridge Assessment International Education (Cambridge International). Results of the

November 2018 series examinations were released in mid-January 2019, with 94.8% and

49.7% of candidates attaining grade e or above and grade a respectively.

More than 10,000 invigilator-sessions were organised for the written papers and listening

tests, which were held in 355 schools this year. Special examination arrangements were

made for 3,084 candidates with special educational needs, which has increased by over

15% from 2018, and a total of 263 special examination centres were set up for these

candidates.

This year, approximately 750,000 scripts were marked onscreen in 12 assessment centres

throughout the territory. About 4,300 markers, 360 marking assistants and 900 oral

examiners were appointed to assess candidates’ performance.

Arrangements for the release of results on 10 July

School candidates should collect their results notices from respective schools, while an

online results enquiry service is available to evening school candidates from 7:00 am on

10 July.

Private candidates will be notified by post and can also check their results online. Those

who do not receive their results notices by post on 10 July should contact the HKEAA on

3628 8860 or visit our office located at 12/F, Southorn Centre, 130 Hennessy Road, Wan

Chai between 8:30am and 5:30pm on 11 July.

Service hours of the Public Examinations Information Centre (PEIC) and the enquiry

counter in our Southorn Centre office will be extended to provide support for candidates

and schools.

Notes for Editors:

The general entrance requirements for local sub-degree programmes are five subjects

at level 2 or above (including Chinese Language and English Language) in the HKDSE

or equivalent.

The general entrance requirements for local undergraduate degree programmes of local

universities/tertiary institutions are level 3 or above in Chinese Language and English

Language, and level 2 or above in Mathematics Compulsory Part and Liberal Studies.

Apart from the four core subjects, institutions also set other admission requirements.

Starting from the 2019 HKDSE, statistics tables 7.1, 8.1 and 8.2 have been

introduced to Annex 1 Results Statistics.

All statistics provided in this press release and the accompanying annexes are

provisional and subject to amendment after rechecking and remarking.
