Alhoewel Jan bekend was as stoute terggees, was daar ‘n baie dieper kant van hom gewees. “Sy passie vir sy familie was ongeëwenaard. Hy was ‘n harde man, maar ongelooflik regverdig.

“Daarna was hy by drie hoërskole in die streek, maar is by aldrie uitgeskop.

As daar ‘n vuur op die buurplaas was, was Jan eerste daar. So ook het hy baie opkomende boere gehelp. Hy was ‘n voorbeeld van ‘n Ubuntu boer,” sê Vaughan.

gehad. “So groot as wat sy hart was, so groot was sy beursie.

“My pa, my held! So ‘n harde man, maar tog so sag.

“Ek mis my pa so baie.

as R30 000.

Foto verskaf.

Baobabs are such an integral part of Limpopo, but how many people really know all the secrets that they hold?

Local baobab patron Dr Sarah Venter this week released an info booklet, entitled The Little Big Baobab Book. This small book is packed with information about province’s most famous giants, sometimes also called the ‘upside-down tree.’

In the preface, Sarah explains that she was inspired by her PhD research on baobab trees. “I felt that the research that appears in scientifi c papers and theses is not available to most people, es-pecially to the VhaVenda people whose lives are so closely linked to the baobab trees of South Africa,” writes Sarah. “It is my hope that everyone will learn what a valuable tree the baobab is and be motivated to become a custodian of this magnifi cent species,” she adds.

EcoProducts, Sarah’s compa-ny, has played an enormous role over the past decade in ensuring that the global trade in baobab powder and oil has bettered the lives of the VhaVenda, from whom she sources her product. Over the years, Sarah has also worked towards establishing baobab fruit powder – Africa’s super fruit. She strips the baobab powder (which is also sold) and extracts the oil from the seeds, which is especially popular in overseas cosmetic products.

These are just some of the in-teresting facts that can be found in The Little Big Baobab Book. It also contains details about the use of the various parts of the baobab tree (leaves, bark and wood), as well as the uses of the baobab in traditional healing practices. For those interested in growing their own baobab tree, there are helpful tips that Sarah has collected during the years.

Locally, this little book can be bought for only R50 from

Noorde Wapens, The Farm Stall at the Avoca Vale Hotel and Leigh-A.

Most of the proceeds will go towards the Eco Products Foundation that is aimed at promoting an awareness of bao-bab ecology and the long-term conservation of the trees.

Sarah can also be contacted for more information at Tel 082 374 9534 or by writing her an email at [email protected].

Little book has really big story to tell

Deur Andries van Zyl

Mnr.

So ‘n besonderse mens sal gemis word.

Daar was altyd tyd vir ‘n grap-pie, stuitigheid of ‘n streep trek.

Want jy is ‘n Boer

074 242 9984 of 015 516 3725.

Foto verskaf.

The Limpopo Bushveld is home to a new state-of-the-art photovoltaic (PV) plant that will connect 66 megawatt (MW) of power to the national electricity grid.

This renewable-energy unit of the Italian energy group Enel was constructed at Tom Burke, rais-ing its installed capacity in the country to nearly 160MW. Enel started construction of the PV plant in March 2015.

“The power produced by the Tom Burke power plant is injected to the national power grid, and will be fully available to the people of Limpopo,” said Enel on Monday.

The Tom Burke PV plant is capable of generating up to 122 gigawatt-hours a year, which is equiva-lent to the annual consumption needs of around 38 thousand households, while avoiding the emission of over 111 thousand tonnes of CO2 into the atmo-sphere each year. The plant is also supported by a 20-year power purchase agreement with Eskom, having been procured through the government’s Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (REIPPPP).

Through the REIPPPP, the government has pro-

cured 6 377 MW of renewable energy since 2011, stimulating private investment of around R200 bil-lion. The evaluation of bids for a further 1 800MW allocation is underway, which could increase the investment amount to more than R255 billion.

In South Africa, Enel’s South African renewable subsidiary Enel Green Power SA currently owns the Tom Burke plant and, in addition, the 10 MW Upington PV power plant situated in the Northern Cape, and a further 364MW of projects that are currently under construction. They are the Adams (82.5MW) and Pulida (82.5MW) PV plants and the Nojoli (88MW) and Gibson Bay (111MW) wind farms.

Enel expressed the hope that they would be able to secure similar projects to develop more solar plants within the Limpopo Province.

“We are currently exploring other investment opportunities all over South Africa and including, of course, Limpopo, a province very rich in solar resource. Enel Green Power is currently proceeding with an approximately R20 billion investment plan in the country. We are also considering investments in other Sub-Saharan countries. Recently we were awarded a 34MW photovoltaic plant in Zambia, through a public tender,” said Enel.

Court News

Two men from Louis Trichardt are to stand trial on charges of theft for allegedly stealing from M Premjee & Sons.

Hussain Mohammed (31) and Ravi Mohammed (29) appeared in the Louis Trichardt District Court on Monday. They were charged in January this year, fol-

lowing their arrest. The charges of theft against them relate to allegations that they had stolen a little more than R10 000’s worth of merchandise from Premjee.

The two men apparently had an arrangement with another busi-ness owner to sell him the stolen merchandise for a cash fee. Both were caught when Premjee took a closer look at security footage

after a trolley of goods had gone missing in January this year.

During Monday’s court ap-pearance, the State indicated that the two accused decided to go on trial because they did not agree with all the allegations contained in the theft charges against them.

For this reason, the two men’s case was postponed until 25 July, when it is expected to continue.

ZOUTPANSBERGER, 24 JUNIE 2016 5

6 ZOUTPANSBERGER, 24 JUNE 2016

Awards

The Zoutnet group of newspapers, the Zoutpans-berger and her sister publication, the Limpopo Mirror, showed once again that they can hold their own against the best the community and local press industry has to offer in South Africa.

The Zoutpansberger performed very well and won two of the top trophies during the Local Media Excellence Awards, hosted by the Forum for Com-munity Journalists (FCJ). One of their journalists, Isabel Venter, also managed to win a first place in the category Best Hard News Photograph.

Last Friday saw the first ever FCJ Local Media Excellence Awards taking place at the Leriba Hotel & Day Spa in Centurion. The awards have previ-ously been hosted with Sanlam and the MDDA as the main sponsor of the event. Sanlam withdrew from the competition last year, however, which led to the FCJ themselves hosting the awards this year. For the past 25 years the competition has been presented with the aim to recognise excellence in community media, small commercial (print) and lo-cal media owned by the mainstream media (print).

Receiving over 800 entries this year (news-papers, writing and photographs combined), the judging panel was pleased with the remarkable increase in print entries, saying: “The local me-dia is clearly at the forefront of informing [and entertaining] the communities they serve. In fact, print media is far from dying when one looks at the local media newspapers. On the contrary, it is alive and kicking.”

In the newspaper category, the Zoutpansberger did exceptionally well and was announced as the Best Independent Commercial Newspaper (older than five years). The newspaper also took top honours in the category Best Front Pages, with the Limpopo Mirror taking second place in the same category.

The Zoutpansberger’s news editor, Andries van

Zyl, managed to secure a top-10 finish in the highly contested Journalist of the Year category. (He took top honours in this category the previous year). The overall winner in this category was Jana Boshoff from the Middelburg Observer. Apart from this, Andries also impressed in the categories for Human Interest and Sport News, boasting a top-10 finish in both. Andries’ colleague, Isabel, apart from her first place win with a news photograph showing a truck driver working hand-in-hand with local firemen, also took second place in the category for Best Feature Photographs. Another news photo of hers won an eighth place, while fellow journalist and photographer from the Limpopo Mirror Elmon Tshikhudo won a fourth place in the same category.

In the other photography categories, Isabel managed to win a fourth place in the category for Best Portrait Photographs and a ninth place in the category for Best Sport Photographs. In the writing categories, Isabel also managed to take two top-10 finishes in the category for both Hard and Sport News.

Another fellow writer and correspondent for the Limpopo Mirror, Tshifhiwa Mukwevho, scooped up a top-10 finish in the category for Hard News.

“The awards are recognition of the hard work, often under difficult circumstances, of the team we have at the Zoutpansberger and Limpopo Mirror,” says Anton van Zyl, manager of Zoutnet and pub-lisher of the two newspapers. “We have always placed a high premium on editorial content. In an era where people consume content via a variety of sources, it is important to focus on quality and be a trusted source of information,” he says. According to Anton, this is what distinguishes a newspaper that cares about the community it serves from the ones merely there to rake in advertising revenue. “The journalists need to do more than just collect news material. They need to interpret and select, but most of all be sensitive to the needs of this specific community,” he says.

Local newspapers still able to hold their own

The Zoutpansberger and Limpopo Mirror proved their worth during the past weekend’s FCJ Local Media Excellence Awards. Picture with the awards the newspapers won are, from left to right,

Wikus Lee (editor, Limpopo Mirror), Tshifihiwa Mukwevho (correspondent Limpopo Mirror), Andries van Zyl (news editor Zoutpansberger) and Isabel Venter (journalist).

Elmon Tshikhudo, journalist for the Limpopo Mirror, won a fourth place in the category Hard News Photograph during the annual FCJ Media Excellence Awards.

against Dingane in February 1840, he and his 335 men collected some 40 000 cattle as well as 1 000 children. These children were later “booked in” in Pietermaritzburg. The trade in young slaves was also not a strange occurrence among many of the Black tribes. Women and children caught during wars were either subjugated or traded. Captured

slaves, often referred to as “black ivory”, were sold to traders who took them to the various ports to be shipped away on dangerous journeys to other continents.

It was the system of catering for “foster chil-dren” that seems to have created the loophole for citizens of the ZAR to deal in child slaves. On 9 May 1851 a law was passed by the Volksraad, regulating the control of “apprentices”. The Apprenticeship Act men-tions orphan children as well as gifts of children. The trading of children outside the border of the Transvaal was strictly forbidden. The Act made it possible to legally transfer children from one owner to another owner.

The children had to be registered with the Landdrost within eight

days. A penalty of fi ve rijksdaalers was payable for failing to do so. A fi ne of 50 to 500 rijksdaal-ers was payable for obtaining children illegally.

The story of MW Pretorius has another angle, which paints a much darker picture of his infl u-

ence on the lives of the people in the Zoutpansberg. MW Pretorius, along with numerous other promi-nent people, also took part in the controversial “in-boekeling” system, condemned in some circles as an excuse for child slavery.

To understand where it all came from, one has to go back all the way to the start of the 19th century, back to an era where the trading in slaves was an everyday occurrence. At the closest harbour to the Zoutpansberg, Inhambane, some 1 000 slaves were annually sold in the 1830s. The buyers came mostly from France, but some slaves were even shipped to countries such as Brazil.

Evidence of the extent of this form of trade is not diffi cult to fi nd. When Louis Trichardt arrived in Delagoa Bay (Maputo) on 30 April 1838, he mentions in his diary that he had traded a horse for two child slaves. When commandant-general Andries Pretorius was victorious in the battle

President M.W. Pretorius.

This week we continue our exploration of the history surrounding President Street, presumably named after the fi rst president of the ZAR, MW Pretori-us. He was the son of the famous Voortrekker leader, Andries Pretorius and was born on 17 September 1819 in Graaff-Reinett in the Cape Colony. At the age of 19 he joined his parents when the families embarked on the Great

Trek to the north. President MW Pretorius was no stranger to the

people of the Zoutpansberg. He visited the area on at least two occasions and he was very involved in processes to try and diffuse the animosity between the settlers at Schoemansdal and the Vha-venda. In last week’s arti-cle we took a closer look at these visits and the battles between, among others, Chief Madzhie and the Boer forces. The ZAR president was, however, also accused of taking part in the dubious “inboek-stelsel”, often described as another form of child slavery. This week we look at the impact that this prac-tice had on the region and fi nd out whether some 4 000 Venda, Matebele, Betchuana and Swazi children were really sold as slaves.

Continued from p12.Initially the price for an “inboeksel” certifi -

cate was one rijksdaaler, the price of one-third of a sheep. The price was later increased to 35 rijksdaalers, the price of an ox. The certifi cate was sold together with the child slave. This made the trading in child slaves within the Transvaal border quite legal. The trading price to outsi ders beyond the border was between 130 and 200 rijksdaalers (six oxen).

A person who has done a lot of research in the past few decades on the subject of child slaves is Dr JC van der Walt. He is the author of several history books, such as Child Slavery in South Africa 1837 – 1877. He writes:

“The documents that survived in the archives record the kidnapping of thousands of children in the district of Zoutpansberg during several wars and raids against the VhaVenda and the amaNde-bele as well as the BaKwena people in the distant Bechuanaland.

Some of the kidnapped children were as young as four months old. The Boers targeted very young children because the babies would soon adapt to their new environment, forget their parents and would not abscond. Tribal chiefs also donated children.

The apprenticed children were valuable and the Boers treated them well. The older children that learned to speak Dutch or Afrikaans were affec-tionately called ‘Oorlams.’ However, thousands of children were ‘exported’, sometimes in an inhumane manner.

The Boers hired black hunters on foot to hunt elephants for them in the malaria and tsetse fl y areas. The hunters returned with ivory as well as with ‘zwart ivoor’ or ‘black ivory’ - the euphe-mism for kidnapped children.”

The trading in slaves was offi cially abolished by the British Government in 1834 and the slaves were “emancipated”. When the Zuid-Afrikaan-sche Republic became independent in 1852, the anti-slavery clause formed part of the Sand River Convention. This historic convention was signed on 17 January 1852 by MW Pretorius’s father, Commandant-General Andries Pretorius and others, on behalf of the new country.

Old habits, however, die hard and especially in the Zoutpansberg the demand for slaves created a profi table market and the practice continued. In terms of article four of the Sand River Con-vention, slavery in the ZAR was a very serious offence. However, the Boers did not regard the apprenticeship “inboekstelling” of thousands of “orphan” children as slavery. It was regarded as “charity.”

“In August 1852 Commandant-General MW Pretorius, Commandant PE Scholtz, and Field-Cornet Paul Kruger with 300 sharp shoot-ers, kidnapped 200 children from chief Sechele in the remote area of Bechuanaland and they took the children to Rustenburg, 400 kilometres away. Sechele had done them no harm. Chief Sechele walked 1 600 kilometres from Bechuanaland to

Cape Town to plead with the British Government to get his two sons back. Commandant PE Scholtz later returned his two sons to their tearful mother,” writes Van der Walt.

Van der Walt probably bases this story on the writings of the Scottish mis-sionary and explorer, David Livingstone. Livingstone’s home was ransacked during this attack and the Boers accused him of supplying weapons to the Batswana. Livingstone’s version was vehemently denied by Kruger and others.

The ZAR government gradually started bowing to international pressure, especially from the British empire. In a letter dated 12 January 1857, President MW Pretorius writes to the ZAR’s deputy president, Stephanus Schoeman, urging him to curb the practice of dealing in young slaves. He warns him that “if we want to retain our independence” the ZAR needs to control the traffi c of young black children.

Whether Schoeman heeded this call is doubt-ful. A year later, Rev PDM Huet of the Gere-formeerde Kerk (Reformed Church) visited the town of Schoemansdal. In his book “Het lot der Zwarten in Transvaal” he tells how children were being captured in the Zoutpansberg. He describes the brutality of the wars between na-tive tribes and writes: “Maar het is voor mij meer dan waarschijnli-jk, dat niet zelden zulke onderlingen … oorlo-gen plaats grijpen met geen ander doel dan om de kinderen tot buit te maken, ten einde ze te kunnen verkoopen.” (I am convinced that often such native wars occur with no other reason than to capture children and sell them.)

In a letter dated 6 January 1862, the husband of Deborah Retief (daughter of the Voortrekker leader Piet Retief), writes to Stephanus Schoeman: “As u in Zoutpansberg kom, koop vir my vrou ‘n kleyn myt. (If you arrive in Zoutpansberg, buy ‘n young black girl for my wife. Don’t pay more than seven pounds, because they are as common as fl ies.)

President MW Pretorius also booked in “swart ivoor” and he received children as “gifts” from tribal leaders. The amaSwati donated many kid-

napped children as political gifts to the Boers. On 12 May 1865 the Landdrost of Lydenburg entered the following in his daily journal: “I, the under-signed, declare hereby that … chief Umzwaas has sent three … orphaned children for the Honour-able President MW Pretorius, his ally.” The girls were estimated to be ten years old and the boy eight, these orphans being named Lea, Sara and Jaantje.

“He gave in return two white blankets.”It is often diffi cult to distinguish between who

were considered to be “refugees” and what was outright slavery. There was the reality of having to deal with orphans and displaced people, es-pecially in a time of turmoil. From what could be established, the children were mostly treated well by the families they were placed at. Still, they had very few rights and had to stay with the family until the age of 21 (and often longer). There were many reports of abuses and it is also clear that the practice of “selling” people was severely criticized by leaders of the predominant churches.

It did, however, continue until the 1870s.In the winter of 1865, the Reverend Charles

Murray, an inspector of the Dutch Reformed Church, came across the wagon of a certain Gert Duvenhage in Makapanspoort. Murray wrote:

“Duvenhage had a strange cargo that he was going to trade. In the back of the wagon I saw eight small African children packed tightly together, in the same manner that I, as a child, was wont to observe in drawings of slave ships.” It quickly became clear to Murray that he was

dealing with a dealer in “black ivory” and that the children were exposed to severe abuse.

Duvenhage was willing to trade the children for six head of cattle.

“When the man spoke to me about the journey, I became extremely angry and told him that his trad-ing practice was one of the reasons why the Lord held back his blessing on the land; it was enough to bring a curse on the Repub-lic,” wrote Murray.

During October 1867, three months after the Vhavenda had torched Schoe-mansdal, Stephanus Schoeman and his 43 volunteers from the Pretoria Rifl e Corps, plus 241 black allies under chief August

Zebediela, attacked the female chief Modjadji to extract tribute from her by force.

The Volunteer Commando killed 16 adults and they captured 74 children. They later returned 19 children, aged three years and younger, to their mothers. All in all, 55 children were distributed among the volunteers from Pretoria.

The offences were brought to the attention of

the ZAR in many cases and court cases and hear-ings followed. In one such case, the ZAR High Court charged FH Geyser, SM Venter and Joao Albasini with “illegal actions and child stealing”. They were later discharged on a technicality.

Albasini may have continued with this trade for quite some time. On 17 July 1870, Dr BG Arnol-di, a medical doctor from Pretoria, complained in a letter to Joao Albasini that two of his appren-ticed girls, Kaatje and Dammio, had found their way back to Zoutpansberg. Dr Arnoldi demanded four heifers as compensation for the loss of the two little girls.

Perhaps the true extent of what had happened is best described by one of the victims, a girl simply known as Adela, who had been captured in the Zoutpansberg in 1865. In an affi davit she described her ordeal:

“The country in which we lived before our people were scattered by the Dutch

is near Zoutpansberg. I remember when I was taken, although very young at the time. There were others taken besides myself, some older, some younger.

The Dutch surrounded our kraal while it was yet day, and set fi re to the huts. The noise of the fi re awoke us, and we ran out just as we were. The grown-up people who attempted to run out of the kraal were shot down, and the rest huddled together, surrounded by the Dutch on horseback.

The children were then put together in one place, while the rest were made to go into the cattle kraal, which was built of stone, and were there shot at, till they fell down dead and dying. The Dutch then took us to their wagons, and we were divided amongst them.

I fell to the lot of Mr van Zweel. My master often lived in town, and while there I used to see children brought down from Zoutpansberg and sold for money or cattle. They did not use to hawk children about in the same way when I was taken: this practice has taken place since, but one would sell to another, as occasion required.

When I was about fourteen years of age my master sold me to a Natal … wagon-driver for thirty pounds. I came down here with him, and have lived with him ever since. He was at that time, and still is, wagon-driver to Messrs Barrett of this city.”

And so, after a very long detour, the story re-turns to the protagonist, President MW Pretorius, who clearly lived in a time of turmoil and change. It was a time of exploration and a time where value systems changed. He was born in a period where slave trading was part of the economy, but he died when the last traces of it started disap-pearing from the continent. He compiled the ZAR’s constitution, which, among others, states in Art 10: “Het volk wil geen slavenhandel, noch slavernij in deze Republiek dulden.” (The nation will not tolerate any slave trading or slavery in the Republic.)

Interestingly enough, the same constitution also guaranteed press freedom.Sources:* Boeyens, J.C.A. Die konfl ik tussen die Venda

Municipal News

During the previous financial years, excellent work had been done in areas such as provision of water, sanitation, refuse removal, housing and electricity, said the mayor of Musina, Cllr Mihloti Muhlope, when she delivered her State-of-the-Municipality Address (budget speech) at the New Nancefield Community Hall last Friday.

“The fact the some of the 1 000 houses that have been allocated to us by the provincial government have been completed, clearly demonstrates that we are serious about service delivery. We have forwarded all documentation to the Department of Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs, whereafter the qualifying beneficiaries will be contacted for housing alloca-tion,” she said.

According to Muhlope, 2 634 indigent house-holds in the urban areas of Musina receive free basic water from the municipality, while 4 692 households from the villages also benefit from free water provision. “While a few settlements in the country are still struggling to eradicate the bucket system, it gives me pleasure to proudly announce that we don’t have a bucket system in Musina.”

She said the construction of the R320 million Musina Mall and the establishment of the Special Economic Zone (SEZ) was to make prospective investors aware of the fact that there was potential for economic growth in Musina. “The initiative will transform our town into a top investment destina-

tion that will attract businesses and foreign direct investment while, at the same time, accelerating industrial development and realizing the country’s industrial action plan and the new growth path. As a logistic hub, the SEZ will create thousands of job opportunities to our people while unlocking many opportunities that were non-existent before.”

According to her, the municipality has complet-ed several projects, which include the Nancefield community high-mast lighting at a cost of R1,5 million. “We have also renovated the community hall in Nancefield Ext 1 at a cost of R2,5 million. Madimbo extension of Thusong Service centre was undertaken at a cost of R1,2 million rand. We also constructed the Nancefield gymnasium at a cost of R2,3 million. Tar roads worth R7,1 million were also constructed in Musina Nancefield. A new traffic client centre, costing us R6,3 million, is 90% complete.” She added that during the next financial year, property rates will increase by 6,5%. “Electricity charges will increase by 7,8%, while refuse removal and other services will increase by 6,5%.” In terms of the municipality’s new plans, she announced that they will construct a grandstand at Skoonplaas Stadium, upgrade the electricity capacity in Musina, construct multi-purpose and community walk-in centres, convert all residential conventional electricity meters to pre-paid and con-struct paved roads, speed humps and a storm-water drainage system. She also thanked De Beers Ve-netia Mine and Vele Colliery for implementing social projects aimed at improving the lives of the people of Musina.

Foto verskaf.

A Musina Secondary School teacher, Mr Theodore Mao-ka, a former Pan Africanist Con gress (PAC) councillor in the Musina Municipality, Mr Eugene Khosa, and an immi-gration officer, Mr Edward Tshivhase, appeared in the Musina Magistrate’s Court a fortnight ago on charges of corruption and defeating the ends of justice. They were given bail, but with strict conditions being set.

The three were arrested, along with 12 other suspects, on 26 May by the Directorate for Pri-ority Crime Investigation. Eleven of the suspects were released on R3 000 bail when they appeared in court on 27 May.

A suspected illegal immigrant, Philip Molea, was denied bail. Molea is suspected of being an illegal immigrant who uses false names. He was denied bail, pending the verification of his citizenship.

It is alleged that Maoka re-

ceived R2 000 for attaching temporary resident permits to passports and also applying entry and departure stamps on 21 pass-ports without any documentation supporting the foreign nationals’ stay in the country.

Khoza, who owns a clearing agency at Beit Bridge and has a pending corruption charge against him, is accused of ac-cepting R7 200 for issuing false

immigration stamps to foreign nationals.

As part of their bail conditions, all the suspects were barred from attending their work places at the border post. They will appear in court again between 27 June and 4 July for trial.

16 ZOUTPANSBERGER, 24 JUNE 2016

Die Weg, die Waarheid en die Lewe

Jesaja 2:12-17:Die Here alleen moet verheerlik word.

gedurig veg teen hoogmoed.

Daisy is ‘n katmens.

“Dis nie fair nie, Bernard,” sê Daisy opstandig. Haar stem

is dik en sy hoes rou.Maar Bernard is onsimpatiek. “Jy

weet wat die ooreenkoms is, Daise. Dis nou weer jou beurt.”

“Jy is ‘n chauvinis. As jy jou sin kon kry, was ek al lankal swanger en kaalvoet in die kombuis,” kap Daisy blindelings.

Bernard lag kliphard.

“Dis net verkoue, Daisy.

Okei, pappie. Praat, ek luister.” Daar is fi -naliteit in Daisy se stem.

Foto’s verskaf.

18 ZOUTPANSBERGER, 24 JUNE 2016

By Isabel Venter

Herby Lees, the cyclists from Pretoria who was seriously injured during the Kremetart Cycle Race, is well on his way to a full recovery.

Herby was competing in the mixed-tandem cat-egory of the race a fortnight ago, when he crashed into a stationary vehicle next to the road at the start of the fourth stage at Schoemansdal. The vehicle was an official race-support vehicle that was parked about 300m from the turn-off (facing towards Louis Trichardt) on the right-hand side of the road.

Herby hit the trailer with such force that a piece of angle iron on the back of the trailer al-most completely cut off his right arm beneath the

shoulder. Apart from his badly cut and broken arm, Herby’s also sustained several fractured ribs, which punctured his lungs, and a deep laceration on his right knee.

Herby was airlifted to Union Hospital in Alber-ton, where he underwent a series of operations to fix his arm.

Madelein Hoffman, Herby’s girlfriend, spoke to the Zoutpansberger this week and confirmed that he was back at home. He returned to the hospital on Tuesday, where the staples in his wounds were removed, so that he could start with physical thera-py on Thursday. “He is doing really well, and with the therapy he will probably regain the use of his hand and arm,” said Madelein.

The Eastrand Cyclist club paid a special visit to Herby Lees to wish him a speedy recovery. Photo: Facebook.
