Dear friends,

Christmas is an active holiday with a lot of

songs, joyful events, gifts, get-togethers,

families around the table. It is a holiday

when the whole world is celebrating some-

thing. Something big.

But Christmas, the true Christmas, is in

fact a quiet event in Bethlehem. One mother

and a child. The true Christmas communi-

cates a message of simplicity and humble-

People who love us unconditionally.

God, who is present in our midst and with

whom we feel safe. We know that he has

control over our lives.

Those very few things that we really need

for everyday life. Things should always be

instruments; things should not be the

goals.

Wherever we find ourselves this Christ-

mas, let us embrace these simple realities of

the true Christmas. Simplicity of heart with

small needs and much love.

May you and your loved ones have a joyful Christmas & a blessed New year!

We Franciscan friars of the Croatian Franciscan Custody of the Holy Family serving the U.S. and Canada gladly get together for prayer and work, even though sometimes more than a thousand miles separates us. Every three years we hold in Chicago our regular Chapter Meeting, at which we are together, gathered often in prayer or in conversation. We examine the work of the past three-year period and we make plans for the future. Also at these Chapter Meetings we vote with secret ballots to choose the head of our Custody (who is called the and his Custodial Board members.

And so it was at this Chapter Meeting, held in the last week of September.

October 17 in Medjugorje, the place of his birth, at the age of 98. He was a Francis-can priest for 72 years, al-most 40 of which were spent serving in the Croatian Fran-ciscan Custody of the U.S. and Canada.

Ordained a priest in Mo-star on June 4, 1939, Fr. Zoran studied ten years in Rome (1939-49), obtaining a

Law, a Doctorate in Theol-ogy, and another Doctorate in Greek and Latin Classical Literature. Due to the Com-munist regime in his home-land, he could not return home, so he arrived in the U.S. in December 1950.

During his four decades here, he served as an editor for many publications at

Croatian Franciscan Publications in Chicago. But Fr. Zoran also had many pastoral assignments.

During the 1950s he served as an assistant pas-tor a couple of years in St. Louis, and then several more years at South Chi-

for 14 years, he was pastor in Sharon, PA (1958-72). After a year in charge of a friars residence in Beaver Falls, PA, he was pastor for six years in Ambridge, PA (1973-79). At age 65, he re-turned to St. Anthony Mon-astery in Chicago, to serve as an editor at the printing press. After the spring elections

in 1990 that removed the Communists from power in Croatia, Fr. Zoran finally re-turned home that summer, at the age of 75.

He would serve pilgrims and parishioners in the town of his birth, Medjugorje, by hearing confessions and working the parish office un-til he was into his 90s. Even in full retirement, he re-mained engaged, praying the Rosary and following events in Catholic matters.

Prepared by the Last Rites, Fr. Zoran died Oct. 17. The next day was the wake, after which was the Funeral Mass at St. James Church and the burial in Medjugorje. On behalf of Fr.

1972 is the official year of founding for the Croatian Catholic Mission on the North Side of Chicago. In the begging this Mission was named Angel Guardian, but in 1998, when pope John Paul II beatified Cardinal Alo-jzije Stepinac in Marija Bistrica, Croatia, the name was changed to Blessed Alojzije Stepinac Croatian Catholic Mission. Thus the year 2012 is the 40th Anniversary of this Mission. This Anniversary was celebrated at our annual banquet at The Croatian Cultural Center of Chi-cago, which is located on the north side near our church and which has been intimately tied with our Mis-sion since its founding.

In this year we finished the renovations of our rec-tory: new office, restrooms, classroom and lobby area on the first floor and new kitchen and bath-rooms in the living quarters on the second floor. The renovations also included the new electrical installa-tions, plumbing and heating and cooling on both floors.

This year was marked with the events that usually

happened regularly in the life of faith community.

After singing for us they went to an international singing competition in Ohio, where they showed off the diversity and beauty of music from our homeland. We were overjoyed to learn that they took second place in this big competition. Our youth in folklore group Croatian Vines A majority of our parish youth are members of The Croatian Vines, folklore group. They represent us well with their per-formances through-out USA, Canada and sometimes in Croatia.

On Sunday, June 3, St. Jerome Church was adorned with two beautiful mosaics above the two side entrances of the church. They were made by Botti Studio in Italy and were installed by Botti Studio in Chi-cago. The Marian Society of St.

The Cardinal's homily touched upon the impor-tance of gathering as a community of faith, as well as the strength that comes from one's spiritual and national identity. At the Mass were dignitaries and representatives from the City of Chicago and from Croatia. Men dressed in traditional Croatian cos-tumes lined the center aisle as honor guards for the entrance procession. What a moving sight!

Following Mass, every-one headed to the Hilton Towers on Michigan Ave-nue for a gala banquet at-tended by 1,011 people. During the event, a digital presentation took place where parishioners and friends of the parish took us down memory lane, reflecting on their days and various events of St. Jerome over the years. A look to the future was pre-sented with the St. Jerome App, as well as a digital presentation of a new St. Jerome center to be built. a multi-year project

Archival material from St. Jerome's has been col-lected over the years, and most recently has been pro-fessionally digitalized. Documents from other American archives were collected from the Chicago Archdiocese, the City of Chicago, and Ellis Island in New York. This great task, unique among any Croatian community in America, brought to life the history of this parish, its schools, the Velika Gospa feast, and various parish organizations and events. Some of the photographs have been digitally re-mastered. A book called "100 Years of Documents and Photo-graphs, 100 Years of Memories" will be printed in the near future. Another unique work, a demo-graphic study of 310 pages titled, "St. Jerome Croatian Parish in Chicago, Church Records as a Source of Ethnic History," by Dr. Ante Cuvalo, will be presented in the near future.

Over 30 banners are hanging in the streets near the church. Many of them carry the names of families, clubs and societies, as well as the 100 years logo.

A documentary film about St. Jerome Parish will be presented in the fall. PBS Television is broadcasting this film in Chicago on December 9. The producer of this film is Marija Dugandzic-Pasic, who was a longtime journalist for CNN, and currently owns a media company in Chicago.

St. Jerome Sox Night has become an annual social tradition during the past seven years. Sox Night 2012 was held Thursday, May 24. More than 500 tickets

Klub Stepinac, our high

school-age folklore

performers, toured Croatia this past July, from Vukovar

to Dubrovnik and many stops between. When they

visited the headquarters of

HRT, Croatian Radio and Television, they were

interviewed on film in the

studio and also performed a singing and dancing set

outdoors, on one of hottest days of the year, in full

costume. And their loving

parents were out there lending moral support. HRT gave much broadcast time to these fine, uplifting young people.

told the confirmation class that they will now have

received all the sacraments of initiation and are to

live fullness of their faith. We as Christians are to be

living witnesses of Christ in our modern world, he

said, adding that they were the leaders of tomorrow

and that they will need the gifts of the Holy Spirit to

help them in their decision-making for the future.

After Confirmation all were invited to the parish hall

for refreshments and to personally meet with the

bishop.

Saturday May 5th was a special day for 17 children of Sacred Heart Parish. It was the day of their First Holy Communion. The pastor Fr. Stephen Bedenikovic, O.F.M. celebrated the Mass. In his homily Fr. Steve encouraged the children to come regularly to the altar to receive the precious gift the Lord has given to us of Himself in the Holy Eucharist. Full of joy and excitement the children approached the altar to receive the Body of Christ for the first time as their family and friends watched full of pride. It was a special day, not just for the First Communicants, but also for their families, friends and parishioners that gathered in a large number.

The feeling of summer was in the air as we began the month of June. The parishioners of Sacred Heart are also busy with all the prepa-rations for the annual summer Festival. As the first rays of the sun were coming over the horizon from Lake Michigan on June 24th the smell of BBQ smoke was in the air over South Chi-cago. This could mean only one thing, BBQ Lamb and other Croatian specialties were being prepared for

By the middle of the after-noon most of the food was gone. Again this year Tony Alilovic do-nated the lambs, pigs and chicken for the festival. As the crew was cleaning up after the BBQ, other parishioners were getting ready for the second part of the festival. By 4 p.m. the parking lot was beginning to buzz with activ-ity as the bar, games, raffle, bingo and rest of the food stands opened up. Also music began to fill the air as people danced the kolo. The Festival committee and all the workers deserve thanks for all their hard work and dedication.

The Sacred Heart Parish in Milwaukee to-day is unique parish commu-nity which was founded by Mil-waukee Croa-tians 95 years ago. It is now a rich blend of multiple genera-tions of Croa-tians with the American who live in the neighborhood. One goal of the 95th Anni-versary was to bring the whole Sacred Heart community to-gether at one Mass and a grand banquet afterwards. The solemn Anniversary Mass was celebrated by Fr. Josip Nenad Gali the guard-ian of St. Anthony Friary in Chicago, and a former pastor of this parish. On Saturday, March 17th, 2012, Father Paul celebrated exactly 50 years as a Franciscan priest. He was ordained in Washington D.C. on March 17th, 1962. For the past 11 years he has been Pastor of our Sacred Heart Par-ish in Milwaukee, as well as be-ing our Custos for the Croatian Franciscan Custody for the U.S. and Canada the past three years. A Mass of Thanksgiv-ing was celebrated at Sacred Heart at 4:30 p.m. by Fr. Paul with many other priests both Franciscan and Di-ocesan concelebrat-ing. The church was overflowing with well-wishers. loving parish-ioners and friends. Following the Mass, a reception was held in the Parish Hall. Gracious Catering provided an abundance of delicious food. People had a chance to meet and congratulate Fr. Paul. A short program fol-lowed, with religious and civic leaders congratulating Father. At the end of the festivities, Fr.

Paul thanked all the people for their presence and good wishes. There were people from Chi-cago, West Allis, New Orleans and other cities. A very special

ST. ANTHONY CELEBRATION

On Sunday, June 10, 2012, our annual St. Anthony cele-bration took place. The Holy Mass was led by Fr. Dr. Mladen Horvat. After Mass a picnic ensued with delicious food and vari-ous recrea-tional activities.

On Sunday, October 7, we were visited by repre-

sentatives of Croatian associations of war amps,

volunteers and veterans of the Homeland War.

After taking part at Mass, our guests made pres-

entations in the hall of our centre.

Along with the presentations of two short films

and several photographs, our guests spoke of their

units and personal experiences of defending Croa-

tia from Vukovar to Dubrovnik and the southern-

most parts of our homeland.

The experience was wonderful and we are

grateful to our Consul General, Mr. Ljubinko

the Republic of Croatia for doing a great job in

organizing this meeting with distinguished guests

to our Croatian Franciscan Centre.

The Solemnities of Easter and Christmas as well others feasts and social activities highlight the year in all parishes. Yet in every parish there are the day-to-day, week-to-week, month-to- month activities that are the ongoing motor which keeps the parish true to its mission of proclaiming the message of Christ. One of these often unnoticed activities in every parish is some form of outreach to the needy. This includes immediate assistance and also ways of enabling the needy to soon have an improved situation in life; the former usually attracts more attention since the results are more immediate, but yet the latter and more challenging outreach is ultimately more important.

Here at St. Augustine our Human Concerns Committee and St. Vincent de Paul Society are the two main channels of outreach. However, there are also many other opportunities through special appeals and petitions throughout the year. The Human Concerns Committee

Kirins celebrate 60th Anniversary

Father Ljubo Lebo blesses Steve and

Katica Kirin on their 60th wedding anni-

versary. Steven and Katica (nee Frank-

ovich) were married February 24, 1952

in St. Mavar [Mavro] Church in Bosil-

jevo, Croatia. When they came to Can-

ada, they lived in Elliot Lake, Ontario

before moving to Windsor, Ontario.

They have been parishioners of St. Fran-

cis of Assisi Church since 1964. Steve

was an usher in the church for many

years before becoming the President of

the Parish Council for four years, and

was a member of Drustvo Ime Isusovo.

Katica helped embroider the first set of

national costumes for the Kardinal Alojzije Stepinac

Kolo Ensemble. They have two daughters, four

granddaughters, and two great-grandchildren. We

wish them all the best!
