WAITING ON GOD: PASTOR SEARCH COMMITTEE UPDATEBe Still and know that I am God (Psalm 46:10).
In our fast-paced, quick response, instant gratifi cation culture, slowing down is a challenge and being still seems like an impossibility. But did
you know that this is exactly what your elders at First Bap-tist Church have been doing. In fact they have met several times over the past few months to seek God in prayer, listen for His guidance and follow His vision for FBC. These Godly men have followed Gods will in choosing the team members for the Pas-tor Search Committee.
This amazing group of servants is working diligently with the elders as they go forth to search for the next person God has cho-
sen to be our next Senior Pastor. The team has met several times already and plans to meet twice a month on Mondays. They are busy organizing and taking ini-tials steps required for a search of this magnitude. As the clock seems to tick ever so slowly, be reminded that those who wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength. Please be prayerful daily for this team, our church
and the man that God has for us. Time of transition can be challenging, but during those times, we can lean into the One who knows our future. It is natural to want them to be over quickly. But, as we are dis-covering in our trek through The Story, Gods story takes time. And so we wait as He faithfully authors His story for First Baptist Church. While we wait, He writes. And, He puts the characters in place as He sees fi t. We can be assured that this story will be the best, because our God is good the author and per-fector of our faith.

I, like most people, feel my life has been somewhat commonplace with no exciting story to tell. It was not until I took an in-depth look at my life through an exercise at a leadership retreat this past January that I began to recognize that I do have a story to tell-a story of how God used others to shape my life; a story of how God used me to shape other peoples lives; a story of His faithfulness, presence, promises and continual work in my life. The exercise was to create a personal life map by journaling my life story and writing a personal time line. Surely the exercise caused me to revisit some painful moments in my life. But rather than throwing a pity party for myself and getting hung up on how painful those
events/circumstances were, or becoming angry or placing blame on the people that hurt or failed
me, or wallowing in shame over the bad choices I made or the people I hurt, I focused on the pres-
ence of God and His sovereign shaping work in me.
As I reflected on the past and identified significant people, events & circumstances in my life, I began to recognize how God used all of these things (both good and bad) to shape me and my story. I received more clarity about: who I am (my personal character); to whom I belong (child of the living God); how I got to this place in my life (Gods presence and handiwork in my life); the spiritual gifts Hes given me; His love and purpose for me (what He did for me and how I fit into the body of Christ); and how God is using me right now in His Story (to make an eternal difference in the lives of children!)
How amazing is it and how privileged I am that God would use me as an instrument in His Hands to do His kingdom work!
Continuing THE STORYCome discover how God can use you to shape a childs story or how God may use a child to shape your story! Either way, dont miss a life-changing opportunity. Join me and the Childrens Ministry team today. Ch

D.L. Moody was once asked How many people received Christ in the meet-ing? Three and a half, was
his reply. Oh, you mean three adults and one child? No,
three children and one adult. For the child has his whole

YOUTHUPDATELOOKING FORWARD IN YOUTH MINISTRIES
There are many changes which have taken place in the life of our church over the past year. With the encourage-ment from Gods word in Philippians 3, we are pressing on toward the goal for which God is calling our youth heavenward in Christ Jesus. In the midst of transition and the heart ache of good-byes, God has assured us in so many ways that He is still with us and that He is still in control. The uncertainty of the future can cause us to fear change but when we choose to focus on God and only gaze at the uncertainties, we can press on.
Our staff now includes Garrett Hoffmann, Assistant Director of Youth Ministries and Robby Maita, Temporary Youth Coordinator.
Brothers, I do not consider myself yet to have taken
hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and
straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the
goal to win the prize for which God has called me
heavenward in Christ Jesus. Philippians 3:13-14
Garrett is a gradu-ate of Azusa Pacific
University and brings a passion to lead our youth into
closer relationship with Christ. He also brings us his musical talent,
upbeat energy, and pastoral experience. Weve clearly seen
Gods hand guide Garrett to us and at the perfect
time!
Robby is nearing completion of his degree
through Moody Bible Institute. He feels called to challenge
students to grow in their relation-ship with Christ. Robbys fresh
insight and new ideas have already been an enormous
blessing as he leads our youth, particularly in
Junior High.
This summer we also
added to our full-time team, Emily Arwood. Emily
graduated from Biola University and has passion to unleash
students in service to King Jesus. Her enthusiasm is contagious and has been a part of great
ministry over the past year with us.

It is exciting to see what God has planned in the lives of our students as they take up the challenge to read through The Story along with the church. They are invited to share their reactions each week in small groups and during Sunday morning worship. Then on the third Sunday of every month we have B1G Story Sundays when all of our youth attend the main service at 9:30am in the Auditorium.
The staff is excited to bond in Christ and off er a spirit of unity to our youth ministries. They are getting to know one another as they press on toward the goal of being a unifi ed ministry under the leadership of Jesus Christ so that our students will be enabled to grow deeper into relationship with Him.

Being single doesnt mean hiding from the world. Now of course not all singles do this, but youd be surprised what I hear. I wont know anyone. Its a meat-market! (If anything, we error on the side of making sure that doesnt even come close to happening in our group!) Im happy at home on Friday nights... its the only time I have to myself.
There are more excuses/reasons, and I understand them because Ive said those very things too. But what can happen when you get past the excuses?
Suddenly you realize that youre not worried about not knowing anyone (in fact you dont even care that you dont know anyone else), you say enough is enough because youre NOT truly happy at home on Friday nights. You get involved learning new
things, being challenged, growing. And then something amazing happens, you realize that youre not alone. You stay out way too late laughing your head off (not literally off, but sometimes it
hurts so much from laughing youd wish itd fall off!) with your new friends. Youve surround yourself with fun adults who completely get where youre at... because theyre in the very same place!
Im extending a challenge to all the singles. Come join us for an amazing 2014! Theres information below on our Christmas Party, well be starting a book club in January, we start a new Thursday evening Bible study on Prayer January 9, weve got really great events planned throughout the year, and were even going to venture down the path of mixers where you get to know people while learning something practical. Oh, and the ladies are going to have a study just for them called Me, Myself & Lies. A Thought Closet Makeover, and the guys... well you get to have guy time and are going to work on the lost art of chivalry. Shhh... dont tell anyone but... a lady appreciates being treated like a lady! :-)
So thats a brief, and I mean brief look at 2014. Youre going to be crazy-busy and make a whole host of friends youd never have known had you not taken that first step. Take it with us... well be right by your side. You are NOT alone!

We didn't expect Bethlehem, we didn't expect shepherds,we certainly didn't expect a manger,
yet this is how Christ our Savior came to be born unto us.
He is our unexpected blessing. This Christmas, as we remember Christ's birth, let us too become an unexpected blessing at home, in our community and around the world.

W Mi i t T (f l ft t i ht)
I was so blessed to grow up in a Christian home. It wasnt perfect.my mom had come from a home with an alcoholic father, and she often struggled with anger. My dad came from a very reserved New Englander back-ground and for most of my childhood was rather distant. Because of some of the things my parents were dealing with, I sometimes felt God was distant or even a little angry with me.
I got a little off track spiritually in junior high, but mid way through recognized that I really did need God. Looking back, I remember that my paternal grandmother was a great woman of prayer. I know that she was praying for me. I turned my life over to the Lord at that time. I think early teenage years are a common crossroads for people where they are making decisions that may impact their lives for years. Im grateful God captured my heart at an early age because I could have really gotten in trouble.
I married my military husband when I was 19 and traveled all over the world for 22 years. During that time, God continued to draw me closer to Himself and help me grow spiritually. Sometimes I walked with Him faithfully, and sometimes I did not. What I know FOR SURE is that He was always faithful to me. I have always been able to count on Him, especially during challenging times raising my three children or moving to a new military duty station.
God invested a lot of lessons in me over my life journey; most of them I learned through my mistakes! What truly amazes me is Gods grace, and that He has never wasted anything in my life. He is my Redeemer, not just for me at salvation, but also in the ways that He has used everything in my life for ministry to other people. I am one o those who now carry Gods message of grace forward, and I count it a privilege to be a part of Gods Story of love and redemption.

Our Stories in Gods Story
Elenita Catindigs StoryAdministrative Assistant for Adult Ministies
I grew up believing I was Catholic because my parents were. So whatever they claimed they were, I was. We didnt go to church much, we didnt really pray on a regular basis. I just watched my mom lead the rosary when there was a prayer for the dead. We didnt read the Bible. I dont think we even owned one when we were growing up in the Philippines. I had a head-knowledge about God just because I heard people talk. They would quote things like God willing, God Permits, God knows, God will take care of it, etc. So I was living a life just like that for 29 years until God answered someones prayer for God to touch my heart.
It was 1996 when God began drawing me to Himself. One evening when I went to a Catholic Church after work and the song Here I am Lord was playing. I just closed my eyes and really listened to the words of the song and tears began to flow from my eyes. I pondered on the words of the song and I felt like God was speaking to me through the song; as if He was calling me and I was to respond Here I am Lord! The following Sunday I visited my brothers church in Stockton and kept going every Sunday until I fully understood what it meant to be saved. I began reading the Bible, that had been given to me, along with the Daily Bread devotional. Then I began attending Bible studies. A month later I gave my life to Jesus and got baptized soon after.

Teddi Zacchariou-Rempps Story
Hi, my name is Theodora. Some people know me as Teddi. My husband, David, and our five kids started attending First Baptist about 13 years ago. Lynn Marie asked me to share a little bit about how God worked in my life to bring me into a deeper relationship with Him.
I was born in Australia but lived in Greece from the age of 1 until I started 1st grade. My family is THOROUGHLY Greek! My parents and I moved shortly back to Australia before permanently moving to the United States when I was seven. I would often go to Greece for the entire summer and stay with family.
My spiritual heritage is really rich. Both my paternal and maternal grandparents were strong Christians. I remember my
whole childhood hearing testimonies about how God had helped them through very difficult experiences, even at times of wars, when their lives were at stake. They had to depend on God for everything. My paternal grandfather prayed in his basement so much that there were calluses on his knees!
My paternal grandfather was arrested and put in jail because he was leading a Bible study group at a time when that was not allowed outside of organized religion. Five out of six of his sons all served in ministry. One of his grandsons is a minister today as well. I also treasure my precious maternal grandfather until I was 16 when he passed away. He would touch me on the forehead and give me a blessing literally every time he would pass me by. I was surrounded by an amazing Christian heritage that I am so thankful for today.
As a child, I had a great hunger for God. I wanted to give Jesus my heart over and over again! Probably one of the greatest gifts God has given me is the gift of hospitality. My heart has always been hospitable toward God because of His great hospitality of grace to me.
I cant help but share that hospitality of home and heart to everyone I meet. My prayer is that in Gods great story, He can freely use me to love the people He has placed around me. Lynn Marie asked me to be a part of our FBC womens leader-ship team so that God could use me to encourage our ladies to warmly reach out to the people in our neighborhoods, at work, or in our families. I also think its important for us to share our testimo-nies with people, to tell them the story of how God has worked in our lives. Those stories are powerful!
The past 7-8 years has been very rough for my family. Loss after loss invaded our home. Loss of health (I had a stroke after I had my youngest daughter), loss of a relationship, loss of a job of 22 years (our main source of income), loss of my dad and then my mom 2 years later. Well I felt like I was living Jobs story in the Bible.
In spite of all that, God did and is still doing something good through all of it: While I was out of work, He enabled me to be with our parents every day until God took them home. He enabled me to take my youngest to Kindergar-ten where I met some new friends. One of them and her family attended FBC.
God gave me a job here at FBC which is so much closer to home. I am able to take my kids to every (well almost every) event in the childrens ministry and youth ministry event which I would not have been able to if I was still working in the Bay Area. Now I watch my college student, junior higher, and 3rd grader growing in their faith, loving and serving the Lord. And those are just some of the good things that God is doing from what was earlier meant for evil. I cant wait to see more of what God have in store for us as He weaves my story into his BIG STORY!

OUTREACH
Children enslaved, abused and sold for the sexual pleasure of another person, breaks the heart of God. Several years ago,God broke my heart over the horror of sex traffi cking. Almost fi ve years later, I continue to ask God to use my lower story my everyday life - to somehow fi t with His upper story of justice, redemption and restoration.
God tells us in His Word that He cares deeply for the oppressed. I believe that Isaiah 58 promises that if we pour out our lives to satisfy the needs of the oppressed, it not only honors God, but the Lord will be faithful to satisfy our needs as well.
When I was serving as Womens Director in 2008, we hosted an event called Courage to be You. Speaker Jenny Williamson challenged us to bravely live a life of purpose being all that God calls us to be. Jenny also shared her passion and vision to open a home for victims of sex traffi cking. In the fall of 2009, The Church of Elk Grove, consisting of fi f-teen local churches, came together to launch City Hope which unifi ed area churches and provided hope and aid to our community. One of the events hosted at FBC by The Church of Elk Grove was a Courage House concert. As a body of churches, signifi cant seed money was raised for the purchase of Cour-age House and its 52 acre sanctuary for girls.
Since 2011, Courage Worldwide has successfully run two Cour-age House homes one in Northern California and one in Tan-zania Africa. Courage House is not just a structure or building, a program or an approach; it is a place where hope is given, healing is off ered, and lives are restored.
My heart jumps knowing that no girl has left Courage House in the last two years without being taught many of Gods truths:She was created on purpose and for a purposeShe is loved by her Creator and by Courage House contributors (thats FBC!)Jesus longs to have a personal relationship as her Lord and SaviorHer life matters and she is worth rescuingHer value comes from God, not manHer past does not dictate who she is yet to becomeShe has the power to make good choicesThe hard work of restoration is so worth itShe can live in victory through Jesus ChristShe has the potential to be a world changer
We have the privilege of continuing to support Courage House as they work to rescue and restore girls. I invite you to make November Courage House Month at your house. As you seek God about ways to care for others, ask Him if He wants you and your family involved. There are several ways you can show the love of Christ through the ministry of Courage House.

Pledge to a Month of Prayer For the month of November, pray daily for the staff , leadership and girls of Courage House. These girls have been plucked from the enemys hand and their restora-tion is arduous. Nights are espe-cially diffi cult and you can battle on their behalf through prayer.
I pray we join together and blend our lower story lives with Gods upper story Isaiah 58 challenge. Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen: to loose the chains of injustice and untie the cords of the yoke, to set the oppressed free and break every yoke? Is it not to share your food with the hungry and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter when you see the naked, to clothe him, and not to turn away from your own fl esh and blood? Then your light will break forth like the dawn, and your heal-ing will quickly appear; then your righteousness will go before you, and the glory of the Lord will be your rear guard. Then you will call, and the Lord will answer; you will cry for help, and he will say: Here am I.
Grateful for your partnership,

In the larger scope of things my story only has relevance in the context it will further the cause of Christ or further reveal Gods love, grace and purpose.
I have lived a life fi lled with some wonderful and challenging experiences which includ-ed moments of success, glory and failure. I have learned that glory is fl eeting, success and wealth are relative and the pleasures of this world are vastly overrated.
I have learned the key to fulfi llment and character is not found in celebrity, wealth or pleasure. I have learned the objective of life that brings true fulfi llment is to know God, experience His fellowship, to hear His voice and follow Him.
I give praise to God each day for having been given the opportunity to have experienced so much. Life for me has been an incredible journey. I have fl own airplanes beyond the speed of sound and at altitudes that provide a perspective few have experienced. I have experienced the glory of achievement and celebrity and the sting of battle. I have founded churches, served as Senior Pastor of Churches, headed up ministries, taught bible studies, written books, preached virtually every book in the bible and taught courses to bible college stu-dents. What I have learned and experienced would fi ll many books but not nearly as many volumes as the things I have yet to learn.
I was raised in a family of Christians and pa-triots in the bible belt of America during the depression years. I am the husband of a pre-cious wife of 58 years, a father of three incred-ible children, a grandfather of 9 children and great grandfather of nine children. I love them each one and I am privileged to have a special relationship with each one. I fi nd great joy in seeing the hand of God working out his will, purposes, pleasure, distinct calling and gift-ing in each of their lives. Every month seems to be somebodys birthday, anniversary, wed-ding, baptism or birth announcement.
I have seen the miracle of the human spirit released to work wonders under the inspira-tion of God, the liberty of republican govern-ment and the guidance of inspired leader-ship all of which made America the greatest, most prosperous, most generous and most powerful beacon of light of any nation the world has ever known.
I grew up understanding that he who is the enemy of Christ, was and is an enemy of
-
America. I was born in 1933 during the great depression on a farm near the small town of Herman, Nebraska. I was a cul-tural Christian in my early years of life. I have been a born again believer for 42 years and a Pastor for 30 years. I am still a work in progress.
During the fi rst 38 years of my life I didnt know I didnt know Him. Near the end of my military career I began to seek Him. He used years of absence from my family, years of jobs with responsibilities that challenged my schedule and capacity, years of combat experience and the loneliness that often ac-companies leadership and accountability to come to know myself and to recognize my need.
God loved me but He was not particularly impressed with my accomplishments and I was hopelessly lost. The Lord,
life, my brother and others prepared my mind to recognize my need and my heart to begin to understand Gods love and He opened my eyes to see His hand at work.
As that revelation became clearer I became more aware of who I was called to be and came to realize that God wanted much more from me and it wouldnt necessarily be about me.
I began my Christian walk trying to live up to the expectations of that revelation. I had other lessons to learn; God has been loving and gentle but determined. As I have studied His word and expe-rienced Him through prayer, worship, obedience, fellowship and service the Holy Spirit has worked to confi rm His word, His love and the calling upon my life.
I am still on that journey inspired by the vision and encouraged by His love, faithfulness and attentiveness.

On August 31, Spectrum was honored to participate in an event called Spirit Festival which was held to serve
the city of Stockton. The entire event was free to the public, food, music, health information, clothes, and more. We cant help but believe this is exactly what Jesus meant when He commanded that we take the Gospel everywhere. To look around and see homeless individu-als, unbelievers, and believers alike praising our Lord and Savior together... it was truly a slice of heaven!
Amazing things happen when all Gods people come together as one.
The name of the event, Spirit Festival was fitting for the occasion. The spirit of God was evident as each group on the program led the festival
goers in worship. By the time Spectrum took to the stage, the Holy Spirit was having its
way in the crowd. With raised hands, danc-ing, laughing, and even crying, Gods
people were showering Him with their uninhibited praise. What a joyous
sight! As you are all aware from personal experience, it doesnt take
much to get our group going. With that being said, you can
only imagine the worship we had that day. It was off the
hook! We all left the stage with God bumps!
Concert For Cans and the Loving Hands Ministry is an opportunity for all of us to contribute in a tangible way to those with needs. Whether you attended our 5th
annual Concert for Cans event with Jeff Carnie and Spectrum, and the Spectrum Community Choir, or are part of the youth and children of our FBC who are
involved with Awana and Synergy Basketball, everyone has contributed during the year to this ministry by collecting and donating food items to the pantry. There is still
time to do your part by bringing your donations. Together, we can extend loving hands to those needing our assistance by supporting this ministry.

September was officially the beginning of the worship season for the worship department.
The summer had ended, all vacations were taken, and kids were settled back in school,
allowing for those who serve in the worship area, a consistent availability.
We are so pleased to announce that additional
individuals have been added to the worship teams. As has been maintained before, an
indication of a healthy ministry is growth. Were forever thankful to God that our ministry is one which encourages, inspires, and creates oppor-tunities for individuals to serve. Lord you send
them and we will use them.
If you are interested in joining one of our teams, please contact Jeff Carnie at
[email protected] or ext. 129.
Study and show yourself approved!
Praise God, the sanctuary choir is back from summer break! In concert with First Baptist Church making the workbook, The Story
available, as well as the abridged writings of the Bible, The Story obtainable, the choir will be learning and singing songs chosen to compli-
ment this Bible series. Our prayer is that God will honor and bless all of you who faithfully
commit yourselves to growing spiritually as a church body. 2 Timothy 2:15 Do your best to
present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth. (NIV)
