duisport expands its handling capacities
press release 03.02.2014
Capacity expansion to 5 million TEU by 2015 /
Additional gantry cranes on logport I and logport III
Duisburg, February 3, 2014 The duisport Group is expanding its
terminal capacities in the container terminals in logport I and logport III
on the left bank of the Rhine. A build-up in rail infrastructure is also
associated with the expansion from six gantry cranes currently to a total
of ten. In addition, the handling and depot area is being expanded by 13 hectares. Through the targeted build-up and new construction of
terminal capacities we are creating the conditions for further growth. We
will have capacities to handle 5 million standard containers as early as January 2015, explains Erich Staake, Chief Executive Officer of
Duisburger Hafen AG.

Advantages of a hub concept
A hub system is a precondition for an efficient multimodal network.
A direct connection is not necessarily the cheapest and fastest choice!
Our position: A creative and intelligent hub management saves time and money.
reduction of costs due to
aggregation of transport volumes economies of scale faster delivery on basis of a total intermodal chain perspective
reduction of total intermodal transport time due to
higher frequency of connections (e.g. every 8 hours instead of every 2 days) therefore best quality performance in just in time or sequence delivery highest flexibility and short reaction times
A hub attracts customers of specific branches (e.g. automotive sector or chemical industry in Duisburg)

Examples for rail operators in Duisburg

Best practice example: Rail concept
Using Duisburg as transport hub enables the rail op erators to offer its clients high-frequent transport solutions with best quality .
In the current situation the customer operates 17 direct connections a week from Rotterdam to 6 destinations in the hinterland.
Thereby each destination is supplied by a maximum of 1 time daily.
With the new concept our customer aggregates these volumes by using Duisburg as central hub.
This enables him to offer his clients a minimum of 3 departures from Rotterdam daily and offer via the duisport network a significant increase of destinations in the hinterland.
