Synexil®, Osakryl® are market brands of water dispersions produced by Synthos S.A. Both groups include acrylic and styrene-acrylic products as well as acrylic monomer copolymers with other monomers and dispersions based on vinyl acetate. Synthos aqueous dispersions portfolio satisfies the needs of coatings and building and construction industry for such applications as paints, plasters, primers, putties including decorative (stuccos), varnishes and coatings for wood, adhesives for various applications such as: for wood, paper& packaging and many others.

Synthos pays special attention to the ecological aspectof these products. None of dispersions contain APEOemulsifiers (alkylphenol ethoxylates), solvents, hazardousplasticizers or other substances harmful to human healthor the environment included in the REACH CandidateList of Substances of Very High Concern (SVHC). All our products undergo rigorous internal quality controlbased on an integrated ISO system into which additionalparameters, important from our business partners’ pointof view, can be included on the client’s request.

Synthos S.A. grew out of the companies Firma Chemiczna Dwory S.A. and Kaucuk a.s. SYNTHOS, the current name of the company (intro-duced in 2007), derives from a fusion of two words of Greek origin, synthesis (join) and orthos (proper, right). The name replicates the Company’s mission which is to manufacture and supply its clients with chemical products for further processing, contributing to the development of each client’s business. The name also reflects the na-ture of the Company’s operations in chemical synthesis.

SYNTHOS S.A. after acquisition of the INEOS Styrenics in August 2016, manages production plants in Poland, Czech Republic, the Netherlands, and France.

The activity of SYNTHOS S.A. concentrates on five main groups of products: synthetic rubbers, styrene plas-tics, specialist products (acrylic and vinyl dispersion, and latex and dispersion adhesives), plant protection products and liposomes. SYNTHOS S.A. is the largest European producer of synthetic rubbers and expandable polystyrenes (EPS).

SYNTHOS S.A. makes sure that buyers are satisfied with the scope of raw materials, semi-finished products and chemical products. The company focuses its activities on quality and efficient customer service, as well as on the innovative character of products, at-tractive prices, ecological safety of their technologies and products, and on occupa-tional safety. This effort has been backed up by the implementation of a certified Integrated Quality, Environment and Work Safety Management System.

In 2011, the company launched production of neodymium-catalyzed butadiene rubber (NdBR) in the production plant in Czech Republic (Karlupy). High quality neodymium-catalyzed butadiene rubber is used for mixture for production of ad-vanced car and truck tires and various rubber technical products.

In 2014 the Boryszew ERG S.A. Dispersion and Adhesive manufacturing unit was add-ed to Synthos S.A.

In August 2015, Synthos S.A. completed the construction of a modern SSBR rubber production plant.

The below shows the influence on the hardness of the coating of Synexil® AF 33. Parameter was evaluated based on Koenig test method, adding 6% by weight of the coalescing agent to the dispersion.

There is shown below the Koenig hardness increase curve in relations to values of butyl glycol from the previous table.

Hardness according to PN-EN ISO 1522:2008

The highest value of Koenig hardness is observed for butyl glycol (BG). Butyl glycol influence on transparent lacquer hardness is presented above (75% binder). Results allow optimization of coalescence due to established methods of coating drying.

Based on above, an optimal coalescing agent recommended for Synexil® AF 33 is butyl glycol. Very good and interesting results may be achieved by mixing butyl glycol with coalescent with high boiling point, like Loxanol CA 5330, Dowanol DPnB etc.

A coating 120 µm thick and 5x5 cm in size on a spruce wood is dried for 20min in 40°C, grinded, then second layer 120 µm is applied and dried for 20min in 40°C. Then the two samples are pressed together by a 20kg weight for 1 hour.

0 – no adhesion, 1 – the boards separated with manual force, 2 - the boards separated with the usage of chisel (local adhesion), 3 - the boards separated with the usage of chisel (full adhesion), 4 – during the separation the boards undergo distruction.

    Anti-blocking

Lacquers with Synexil® AF 33 show very good anti-blocking.

Lacquers with Synexil® AF 33 show very good abrasion resistance.

  • Synexil® AF 33 has been developed by the Research and Development Laboratory of Synthos S.A. to meet growing demand of coatings producers. The product provides an effective and innovative solution for professional wood industry, especially for furniture coatings where resistant and high quality products are required.

R&D LaboratoryChemical resistance is an important parameter for wood industry coatings, especially protection against aggressive chemical agents. Exposure time to such chemicals and the type of substance to be verified depends on coating producer and furniture manufacturer requirements. Most common tests are related to: coffee, 40% alcohol, liquid paraffin and water resistance.

Coating of 120 μm thickness applied on spruce wood and stay in normal conditions for 24 hours. Then paper filter soaked with selected substance is applied on the coating. Paper filters are removed after defined period of exposure and coating appearance is evaluated after 24 hours.
