One cant drive down the street without passing at least one antique,vintage or thrift shop.

Auburn is a veritable candy store of vintage boutiques and eclecticniche businesses where some of the most charming gifts can be found at amore-than-reasonable price.

Julia Metcalf, a vendor at Vintage Redeemed in Auburn, said the interest invintage clothing and houseware has soared in recent years.

The economic hardship weve all experienced, I think, contributes to the

popularity of vintage items, Metcalf said. It is the shift from practicality to realappreciation.

She said more and more people wear vintage and are working it into theireveryday wardrobes and homes. She has also seen it make a big comeback onthe catwalk with many fashion labels on and off High Street adopting vintagegarments or a vintage look for their designs.

Its an opportunity to shop for beautiful, unusual gifts and items, because youcant beat the charm of vintage, said Janice Anderson, a local resident andshopper. You get one-of-a-kind gifts that are personal and have depth. Partof the charm is that I dont know what I am going to nd and Im going to buywhatever jumps out and says, Take me home.

Al Lauer, owner of Cherry Records in Auburn, said there has been a resurgenceof records as the younger generation wants vinyl more and more.

Most people that buy and listen to vinyl are either audiophiles, and fetishize thesound of analog recordings, or they simply like the aesthetics of vinyl records,packaging and turntables. Either way there is a romanticism and sentimentalityto the tactile quality of records.

People dont have to buy vinyl, and yet, theyre increasingly choosing to doso, Lauer said.

He said it seems that in a world where CDs are obsolete, and digital les are

intangible, the vinyl record still has a physical value that gives you your moneysworth.

James Van Eaton, local author and co-owner of Winston Smiths Bookstore inDowntown Auburn, lives in a world of books.

There is a slight increase in sales over the holidays, Van Eaton said.However, we dont hedge our bets on it; it is just a nice bonus.

He said Auburn readers looking to save some cash and searching for cheapentertainment can nd it at local used bookstores.

In my experience economic downturns have led to increased book sales, VanEaton said. Now we mainly see people buying special edition or beautifullybound books.

Living in a society of mass production, there is no better way to capture thespirit of Auburn than to give a gift that as unique as the person receiving it.

The Christmas memory that lives on

CHRISTMAS 1969

ince I was a k id, the phrase bestChristmas memory always comesdown to one year: 1969.

That was the year my parents told mythree siblings and me that my dad hadbeen promoted and that we weremoving from snowy upstate New York tosunny California.

For the last couple of months of that year,my dad was already on the new job inCalifornia while we stayed behind to sellour house, get ready to move and waitfor our new house to be built. For those

couple of months, my mom was in effecta single mother of four young kids and adog.

Upping the stakes: We were moving theday after Christmas!

Oh, and our new house wouldnt be readyyet, so wed be staying in a hotel for

the rst few weeks while starting in newschools right after Christmas vacation.

My poor mom. The logistics of such amove required her to demonstrate thechoreographic skills of a Nijinsky, theleadership of a drill sergeant, and theattention to detail of a Radar OReilly.

For the 11-year-old me, this was anexciting, almost dizzying conuence ofevents:

Christmas (nuff said);

Moving across the country, which

entailed:My rst plane ight;

Going to a new school;

Making new friends.

Our Christmas tree that year would havemade Charlie Browns look like a sequoia.Because our tinsel and bulbs had all been

packed, we decorated our little tree withhomemade garlands of popcorn and freshcranberries.

As for our Christmas gifts, since therewas no room under the tree or in oursuitcases for the usual number of presentsfor a family of six, we each got one specialpresent and wed get to bring it on theplane with us.

This was getting better by the minute:Flying for the rst time, with a specialChristmas present to play with on the six-hour ight, to the other side of the country,

where wed become Californians and makenew friends and live happily ever after.

Flying across country in 1969 was a verydifferent experience from todays airtravel. For one thing, everyone dressedup. People didnt y in sweats and shortsand shower shoes. In my case, it meant anavy blazer, white shirt and tie, gray slacks

and an overcoat (this was, after all, upstateNew York in December).

Flight attendants treated travelers,differently, too. They dispensed gum,smiles, pillows and tasty food on real china.Oh, and my dads company sweetened thepot by ying us all rst-class on a then-new American Airlines 747, no less.

Its too late to make this long story short,so sufce to say that we four kids each gotto bring our one special Christmas presentwith us on the ight. (Wed get the rest afew weeks later, once we moved into our

new house.)

My Christmas gift was a 500-piece Legoset, which I enjoyed on the oor in acorner of the 747s upstairs lounge. As Isaid, ight attendants were much kinderand more tolerant back then.

Good thing, too.

Gas prices down, home prices up, and spirits bright in Auburn a decade ago

Send the Auburn Journal Christmas Gift Guide time machine levers back 10years and you nd the hustle and bustle of a buoyant economy in full swingin Placer County, with the area experiencing growth not seen since the heady

days of the 1848 Gold Rush.

The joy of a vibrant, growing economy ltered through the Christmas season andAuburn motorists werent complaining at the pumps either. They were squeezingout savings at the gas station on Christmas weekend, with prices as low as $1.80 agallon.

The Auburn Placer Performing Arts Center group was celebrating the season afterexercising a pre-Christmas option to buy the historic State Theatre for $800,000.The organization has never looked back since then.

In a fond farewell to a community icon, Auburn said goodbye just beforeChristmas to its last living link with the 19th century, 105-year-old Virginia Fleming.Fleming was a 1917 Placer High graduate and daughter of a Belfast, Irelandcobbler who came to Auburn in 1885.

Homeowners had plenty to be joyful about because of a record-high median homeprice of $435,000 in Placer County. Granite Bays values were robust, leading theway at $870,000. Auburn median home prices were at $405,000.

The spirit of giving was felt Dec. 25 at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church ashundreds of helpings of food were served at the churchs 15th annual communityChristmas dinner. A half dozen churches donated food or volunteers, and 200

all-you-can east meals of turkey, potatoes, stufng, vegetables and desserts wereserved to anyone lucky to attend.

All was not calm and bright at Pioneer United Methodist Church, where theHappy Birthday Jesus sign went missing.

The annual Festival of Lights parade brought out the crowds despite near-freezing temperatures. More than 100 illuminated oats kept children young and

old enthralled. Estimates were that as many as 18,000 people gathered alongthe parade route a parade population that eclipsed the citys population by50 percent. A bonre topped off the Christmas celebration. The lighting of theAuburn Christmas tree started things off.

Holiday savings were in order at Ralphs grocery store in Auburn, with threepounds of oranges for 99 cents and rib-eye steak at $4.99 a pound. Gottschalkswas providing 20 percent off coupons in the two days leading up to Christmasand opening hours started at 7 a.m. Mervyns was offering 50 percent off its entirestock of eece clothing and sweaters.

And the spirit of giving was on full display at the Gold Country Fairgrounds onthe Saturday before Christmas as 500 families and individuals received boxesbrimming with food, presents for the children and plenty of Christmas cheer totide them over for the holidays. The Auburn Christmas Basket Program was in its23rd year and despite the vibrant economy was there with care for hundredswhose needs were still great.

y favorite Christmas memory would besitting by the re at my nanas house andmeeting Santa. We would all be sitting in

one room singing Christmas songs and we wouldall hear a thump thump. My nana and I looked ateach other and wondered what that was. We waitedto her another sound on the roof but it was silent.

All of the sudden, we hear a knock on the door. Mypapa opens it and there, standing outside the door,is the guy I have always wanted to meet. With hisbig belly and black boots Santa walks into the house

and he yells Merry Christmas!As everybody calms down, my nana pulls up a chairfor him to sit down on. All the kids scatter to go tellSanta what they want for Christmas. One by one,each child tells Santa what they want. But I had towait my turn. I waited and waited for my turn, and Iremember feeling like it took forever to nally sit onSantas lap for the rst time!

Moments later, Santa looks at me and says, Now

young lady, would you like to come sit on Santaslap? Politely I said yes. He asks me, Now what

Christmas Memorieswould you like for Christmas. I whisper in his ear,All I want for Christmas is my family. He looked atme puzzled. Santa said, Is there anything else youwant? Like any other kid would say, Of course!Again, I whispered in his ear what I wanted forChristmas and he said I think I can arrange that!

The next morning I woke up to a tree lled withpresents underneath. I run to my Nana and Papasroom and wake them up. We go out to the treeand open one or two presents. I open them but itsnot what I told Santa I had wanted. As we hear a

knock on the door, there my dad is. He walks in withsomething in his hands. I look again, I was shocked.There it was; what I have always wanted! A dog!

I run to go hold him, and smile at my dad, my nana,and my papa and I say, Merry Christmas, I love youguys. As we grow older, we will forget ones whoonce meant so much to us, we will forget what weuse to look like in middle school and high school,but what we will never forget is family memories,such as this one.

Ihave very many memories of past Christmases, butone seemed to be my favorite. When I was 6 yearsold, I woke up early in the morning on Christmas

day and went into the living room. There werepresents under the tree, but in the corner were twohuge boxes.

Santa Claus had brought me a basketball hoopand a piano. They were both very exciting to get,but I liked the basketball hoop more. I never had aninterest for basketball but I was still very excited toget this present.

As we opened our other presents, all I could thinkabout was playing with the basketball hoop. Oncewe set it up, I played and played, and I could tell myparents were happy that I loved my new present.

because we have people who live on the east coast.When we had everybody over the house was reallycrowed but it was nice to see all of my family who Ican see only once or twice a year.

Iremember the Christmas last year when I stilllived in Morgan Hill. There was a fairly large andcolorful tree in the corner that my family and I cut

down a week before the holidays. Under it was themany pieces of wrapping paper used to wrap up ourpresents. I got my own laptop and a snare drum withit. It was awesome.

My grandmother and great grandmother were atmy house too, talking about how my family wouldmove away to a new house. I ignored them andconcentrated on the smell of cooking ham waftingthrough the air. It was a smell that made my mouthwater. During the Christmas season my family hasa very special thing that we do every year.On Christmas Eve, my family, cousins and

grandparents will gather around a large table withone big pot of fondue. My grandma and mom willspend the whole day cooking up different foods,such as bread or sausage, to dip into the fondue.We will sit there for hours talking and laughing.

After that is done we will open our presents, unlikemost families we open most of ours on ChristmasEve. Once we are done opening our presents wewill sit down and watch a Christmas movie then fallasleep.

Next morning we will have one big Christmaspresent under the tree that usually will have the giftwe most wanted. I remember last year I awoke andfound no present that was for me under the treethen I looked out the window only to see a brandnew basketball hoop. This is one of my favoriteChristmas memories.

t was around 2011 when my family and I went toDisneyland with my grandparents for Christmas. Itwas the rst time my sister and I went. I remember

my grandparents were over one day sometime aroundThanksgiving and somehow they and my parents goton the topic of Disneyland. My grandpa was surprisedwe had never gone before, and said we needed to gosome time, and to our surprise, for Christmas we gotthree day park hopper passes to both Disneyland andthe California Adventure Park.

After the six-hour drive, we nally arrived at the hotel,and I remember we were all glad to get out of the

packed minivan. I remember I was barely able to sleepthat night, so pumped for the excitement the next daywould hold, but eventually I dozed off and the nextthing I knew, it was morning.

The next morning I was so excited, I could barely eatmy breakfast, and then when I thought I couldnt takethe suspense anymore, we were about to leave fora very exciting day. Upon arriving, the lines to get inwere packed and after about 10 minutes, I got my rstglimpse of Disneyland.

I remember all of the decorations hung up around the

gates. The tall Christmas tree with colorful decorationstwinkling in the sunlight, and I could not wait for myrst ride. After walking around for awhile, my dadand I ended up going on Splash Mountain which wasmy rst ride. He sat in the front, and me in the rowbehind him, getting soaked from the ride down the tallwaterfall.

My next ride was my favorite, the Tower of Terror. I

remember being apprehensive at rst, not completelysure I wanted to go on, but somehow my dad andgrandpa convinced me. Waiting in the fast track line,I was having second thoughts, but it was too lateand they were already showing us the scary videobefore the ride. Walking through the halls, I admiredthe spooky decorations, and the next thing I knew, Iwas strapped into the seat. The loose seat belt wasnot helping my shaking body and my petried mind,but then we were shot up into the elevator shaft andthe sensation of oating overtook me. I remember

holding onto my dads arm the whole time, worried Iwould oat away, but after the ride was over, I realizedit wasnt so bad and wanted to ride again.

Before I knew it, the three days were over, and it wastime for another ve-hour ride back to San Mateoto drop my grandparents off at their home. Werepeatedly thanked them for buying us the ticketsand I was relieved we were nally going home. Afteranother hour drive we arrived at our house aroundeleven oclock and I remember collapsing on my bed,

tired and relieved to be home. I fell asleep almostimmediately, dreaming about the fun rides we went

my most favorite and memorable Christmas.
