1 バビロンの王ネブカデネザルがバビロンに引いて行った捕囚の民で、その捕囚の身から解かれて上り、エルサレムとユダに戻り、めいめい自分の町に戻ったこの州の人々は次のとおりである。Now these are the people of the province who came up from the captivity of the exiles, whom Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon had taken captive to Babylon.

59 次の人々は、テル・メラフ、テル・ハルシャ、ケルブ、アダン、イメルから引き揚げて来たが、自分たちの先祖の家系と血統がイスラエル人であったかどうかを、証明することができなかった。The following came up from the towns of Tel Melah, Tel Harsha, Kerub, Addon and Immer, but they could not show that their families were descended from Israel:

61 祭司の子孫のうちでは、ホバヤ族、コツ族、バルジライ族。──このバルジライは、ギルアデ人バルジライの娘のひとりを妻にめとったので、その名をもって呼ばれていた──And from among the priests: The descendants of Hobaiah, Hakkoz and Barzillai (a man who had married a daughter of Barzillai the Gileadite and was called by that name).

62 これらの人々は、自分たちの系図書きを捜してみたが、見つからなかったので、彼らは祭司職を果たす資格がない者とされた。These searched for their family records, but they could not find them and so were excluded from the priesthood as unclean.

63 それで、総督は、ウリムとトンミムを使える祭司が起こるまでは最も聖なるものを食べてはならない、と命じた。The governor ordered them not to eat any of the most sacred food until there was a priest ministering with the Urim and Thummim.

64 全集団の合計は四万二千三百六十名であった。The whole company numbered 42,360,65 このほかに、彼らの男女の奴隷が七千三百三十七名いた。また彼らには男女の歌うたいが二百名いた。besides their 7,337 male and female slaves; and they also had 200 male and female singers.

66 彼らの馬は七百三十六頭。彼らの騾馬は二百四十五頭。They had 736 horses, 245 mules,67 彼らのらくだは四百三十五頭。ろばは六千七百二十頭であった。435 camels and 6,720 donkeys.

68 一族のかしらのある者たちは、エルサレムにある【主】の宮に着いたとき、それをもとの所に建てるために、神の宮のために自分から進んでささげ物をした。When they arrived at the house of the LORD in Jerusalem, some of the heads of the families gave freewill offerings toward the rebuilding of the house of God on its site.

69 すなわち、彼らは自分たちにできることとして工事の資金のために金六万一千ダリク、銀五千ミナ、祭司の長服百着をささげた。According to their ability they gave to the treasury for this work 61,000 darics of gold, 5,000 minas of silver and 100 priestly garments.

70 こうして、祭司、レビ人、民のある者たち、歌うたい、門衛、宮に仕えるしもべたちは、自分たちのもとの町々に住みつき、すべてのイスラエル人は、自分たちのもとの町々に住みついた。The priests, the Levites, the musicians, the gatekeepers and the temple servants settled in their own towns, along with some of the other people, and the rest of the Israelites settled in their towns.
