Personal achievements: The teacher’s students have been active participants and winners of English Olympiads and contests.

The teacher’s been working on two problems:

“Teaching heterogeneous classes”

and “Forming socio-cultural competence through extra-curricular activities”

Problem 1

Teaching heterogeneous classes may be

one of the biggest challenges facing an English teacher.

How to teach heterogeneous classes ?

Individualization is an option which allows pupils to work according to their own level and interests.

Individualizaion can be implemented by means of: work cards extensive reading dialogue journals

Work Cards should include:

a form which indicates what kind of work the pupil has been doing and at what level;

the corrected column that refers to whether the pupil has corrected the work;

an answer key allows the teacher to check if the pupil is progressing;

the comments column can be used both by the teacher and the pupil for any remarks.

Extensive reading allows each pupil to choose a book at his own level. The pupils should read for pleasure. It will give them a feeling of satisfaction. There should be a wide variety of books to choose from.

Dialogue Journals can give the pupils an opportunity to freely express themselves.

The advantages in teaching heterogeneous classes:

• variety of different backgrounds. Pupils can benefit from different interests, cultural backgrounds and world knowledge resulting in more dynamic classroom interaction.

• motivation as both the weak and average pupils are motivated to try and improve their knowledge of English because of the input of the stronger pupils.
