DEFINITION

Bernoulli’s Principle

In a horizontal pipe, the highest fluid pressure is in the section where the flow speed is the lowest, and the lowest pressure is at the section

where the flow speed is the biggest.

This statement was proposed for the first time by Daniel Bernoulli (1700-1782), so this principle is known as

Bernoulli’s Principle.

The work by force F1 on the pipe with cross-sectional area A1 are:

So that will be obtained:

The work by F2 in the pipe with cross-sectional area A2 are:

W2 is negative marked (--) because the direction of force (F 2) against the direction of motion (transfer) fluid. So, we can write

like this:

Equation (1)

Equation (2)

Equation (3)

That equation above is called the Bernoulli’s equation

WHO IS

THAT ?

Daniel Bernoulli was a Swiss physicist and a mathematician. One of the important thoughts in physics is the Bernoulli

equation on the tube current used for the measurement of flow velocity due to the pressure.

His chief work is his Hydrodynamique (Hydrodynamica) that published in 1738. In Hydrodynamica (1738) he laid the basis for the kinetic theory of gases, and applied the idea to explain

Boyle's law.He worked with Euler on elasticity and the development of the Euler-Bernoulli beam equation. Bernoulli's principle is of

critical use in aerodynamics.
