move on

by Filippo Addarii

Institutional partner of and supported by the European Commission

What we cover

• What kind of network Euclid is

• How to make society to move on

• 3 Stories

• Next challenges

Why are we needed?

• Postmod poverty - eg long term unemployment - resistant to State led solutions (social engineering) doesn’t deliver

• Markets know best (World Economic Forum)… really? eg financial and economic crisis started in 2008

Launch, Paris 2007

Euclid Network

Over 3000 civil society professionals from 30 countries (EU and beyond)

These members collectively:

► Turnover €3 billion per year

► Employ 52,000 staff

► Manage over 1.2 million volunteers

Hubs in London, Paris, Stockholm and Budapest

Pan-European governance

Why are we needed?

• Policy makers wonder who will save society and develop sustainable solutions eg social innovation pilot, Brussels March 2011

What do we do?

Public institutions have UN

Business leaders have World Economic Forum

Civil society leaders have Euclid Network

•Connecting

•Knowledge sharing

•Cross border and cross boundaries partnerships

To foster leadership, sustainability, innovation, and influence of civil society in Europe and beyond

1) Transforming a bank

• Intesa San Paolo Bank Group one of the largest in the Western Balkans

• No interest in neither services for civil society (eg bridge loan for EU funding)

1) From CSR to Business

• Since 2007 EN raised the issue of CSR in WB

• In 2009 Business department of the group took the lead: social business is good business

• In 2010, EN – Intesa regional partnership agreement and pilot in Serbia – civil society working group

• Plan to establish a CSR office in Serbia

• Results: – Trasformation of business culture

– Sustainability of civ soc through income diversification

– Competition in the donor market

– Pressure on EU to improve procedures

• Remarks: commitment of Intesa employees to make a difference ie civil society appeal

2) EU funding rules reform

• EU one of the largest donors of civil society (approx €50bn) but the most bureaucratic

• 2005 attempt led by Open Society (Soros Foundation) to reform regulation

• 2009 indipendent consultation including CEE and non EU countries (thanks to new technologies)

2) EU funding rules reform

• Facilitated by EU officials – committed to the cause – recommendations by civil society working group (CSWG) gathering 70 European top networks

• 2011 both Commission and Parliament back CSWG recommendations

• Remarks:

– EU legitimacy crisis (failed referenda)

– Economic crisis

– Internal support (civ soc appeal - more than lobbying),

– Coordination across borders and boundaries

3) Social Innovation

competition for Naples

• Naples is an international symbol of failure (State and Market) and people do not believe in change anymore (Camorra, garbage, corruption)

• International competition to – Capitalize on collective intelligence

– Design innovative solutions for 6 chronic social challenges in Naples such as school drop-outs and integration of Roma community

3) Social Innovation

competition for Naples

• Public institutions not involved but international and local civil society organisations only

• Winners will receive budget to implement ideas together with partners – evaluation at the end

• Competition includes a strand for junior only – aspiring social innovators and entrepreneurs – to stimulate entrepreneruship (cooperation with 6 Universities)

Next steps

We are improving professional and technological means

…building a community across borders and boundaries

…developing a new narrative

…and theorizing a new political and economic paradigm

To take over Europe!

INSITE is part of the grand plan
