WHY IN GETTYSBURG?

• Lee intended to collect supplies in Pennsylvania & take the fighting away from war-ravaged Virginia.

• He wanted: to threaten Northern cities, weaken the North's appetite for war and win a major battle on Northern soil.

Where was the Battle of Gettysburg fought?

Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. 8 miles north of the Maryland border.

Why was this Victory for the North so important?

• After the Confederate army lost, they never tried to invade the north again

• Considered a turning point.
