There are three main types of hydrangea

Macrophylla

Panicle

Oakleaf

Each type has completely different growing conditions

Macrophylla HydrangeaBig fleshy leaves

Come in varying shades of pink and blue

Shade loving

Panicle HydrangeaCone shaped flowersOval shaped leavesFlowers: green/white to white/pinkTake full sun to part shadeHardy

Oakleaf Hydrangea Oak shaped leaf Cone Shaped flowers Most common varieties grow up to 10 feet tall Beautiful red Fall color Full sun (not hot full sun) to part sun Can be sensitive to exposed winter weather conditions.

One other type…Aborescens or “Ball Hydrangea”Large round white ballsBig round leavesLike sun to partial shade

Key to success:Knowing your the growing conditions

Full sun8 or more hours of lightSouth or West Exposure

Part sun6-4 hours of sunIt is easy to confuse shade with part sun

Shade3 hours or less.If there is hardy any sun, you may not get as many flowers
