• Haptics, is the technology of adding thesensation of touch and feeling to computers.

• A haptic device gives people a sense of touchwith computer-generated environments, so thatwhen virtual objects are touched, they seem realand tangible.

• Understanding and enabling a compellingexperience of Presence not limited to "beingthere", but extended to "being in touch" withremote or virtual surroundings.

• User should be able to touch the virtual object andfeel a response from it.

• In order to complete the imitation of the real world

one should be able to interact with theenvironment and get a feedback.

• This feedback is called Haptic Feedback

• Virtual reality is a form of human-computerinteraction providing a virtual environment that onecan explore through direct interaction with oursenses.

• It’s only an imitation of the real world.

Haptics is implemented through different type ofinteractions with a haptic device communicatingwith the computer. These interactions can becategorized into the different types of touch

sensations a user can receive: • Tactile feedback • Force feedback

 • Refers to the sensations felt by the skin. • It allows the user to feel things such as the texture

of surfaces, temperature and vibration.

• It reproduces the directional forces that can resultfrom solid boundaries.

• E.g. the weight of virtual objects, inertia, etc.

It allows human to touch, feel and manipulate3-D objects in virtual environments.

• Common interface devices like mouse and joystickare only input devices. No feedback.

• Haptic devices are input-output devices.

• The next important step towards realisticallysimulated environments that have been envisionedby science fiction authors.

• Large potential for applications in critical fields as

well as for leisurely pleasures.• Haptic devices must be smaller so that they are

lighter, simpler and easier to use.
