Issue IdentificationAfter preparatory fieldwork, the project team identified 2 public health issues to address:

Lack of awareness about hand hygiene

Serious littering

Activities

• Story telling: Yuan Yuan and Pei Pei with diarrhea

• Glitter game

Good practice for hand washing

Good practice for waste disposal

The project team designed a set of activities for each of the issue:

ISSUE

KEY MESSAGE

Wash hands with tap water after going to the toilet and before eating.

Littering is bad for the environment and lets diseases spread easily.

ACTIVITIES

• Litter slideshow• Save the fish• Litter pick

Story Telling

• Tell the story: Yuan Yuan went to play with animals and Pei Pei went to the toilet; they shared some fruits later but neither washed their hands first; they both had diarrhea that night.

• After the story, let the children induce why Yuan Yuan and Pei Pei contracted diarrhea; throw guiding questions.

• Explain how hand-washing prevents getting germs.

Contents:

The drawings used for story telling depict actual scenes of the village.

Glitter Game• Ask children to pretend that the flakes of

glitter are different type of germs; put a small amount of glitter on children’s hands.

• Ask children to go around and touch each other’s hands.

• Have children look at their hands. Explain how germs can be transferred from person to person through dirty hands.

• Put children into 2 groups: have group 1 wash their hands with soap and group 2 without soap. Explain and show how soap removes the glitter (germs) better than water alone.

• Show children images of wildlife affected by litter, and disease hotbeds covered with litter.

• Then show images that trace the source of rubbish, and finally images of ecologies without litter.

• After showing the images, ask children what they think caused the damages to wildlife and human health, and how.

Save the FishA variation of catch (“老鹰抓小鸡” )• Divide children & facilitators into 3 teams:

– Fish– Trash– Little Heroes (“喜羊羊” )

• The trash tries to catch the fish; the heroes tries to captivate the trash; and the fish tries to avoid being caught by the trash.

• The participants wear a belt each that signifies which team they belong to. Plastic bags, aluminium cans, and used paper are attached to the belt to signify the trash identity. Drawings of the cartoon character, Xi Yangyang, and fish are attached to the belts to signify the other two teams.
