The time has come. It is time to break the infinite nonchalance. Let your thoughts be vented. Blurt it out for there is no better relief than the power to express. Vent your emotions and release your thoughts amidst the firmness of the grip and the clench of the frontier that covers you. Exalt your voice, be a vanguard, vent the truth!

e have been complacent for quite a time.

As a person driven not to settle for less, I invited epiphany to come- that I shall make Ang Sidlakan to get back on track, hence my goals- EEICA (engage, expose, interact, connect and augment).

Engage denotes collecting inputs from the students. It is our goal to make Tatenians be more involved in our effort to widen the publication’s reach. The consequence of this, we believe, is exposure. We aim to elicit vibrance to Ang Sidlakan through various efforts necessary to fulfill it. To achieve this, one requisite that needs to be carried out is better interaction-within the staffers and outwards. Likewise, we commit to connecting to other sectors in the school such as the admin, SSG, among others to bring to you beneficial information from the aforementioned. And there is no way around these would end up to other outcome than augmentation. This brings along with it the yielding of relevant topics, quality and veritable articles and timely release of issues.

These, ladies and gentlemen, we have yet to completely fulfill but we have commenced. Given the circumstances, we have to deal with the pressures we face which are tantamount to several unthinkable sacrifices. You see, it takes boldness, firmness and enforced discipline to make a publication work especially with the goals we have. But most especially, it takes courage and determination, a universal supply of willpower, a sizeable degree of parity and good judgment in order to meet the expectations put forth by everyone.

After all, we understand that meeting people’s expectation is like nailing the wind to a tree. By your reading this piece of human endeavor helps us attain our goal. This release is for you students because you are our primary client. As you flip the crisp pages of this volume may you contemplate on ways to help each other and the institution in general through the laid out points of view that you have read.

In the end we do not just write and aim to accomplish the abovementioned goals for you to just do nothing. We publish this to elicit concern from you, to yield out your desires, supplications, and sentimentsand to make you one of us.

Together, let us be each other’s voice, vanguard and truth. God bless! SA

e commend the administration of DOSCST for its unfaltering pursuit towards educational excellence by subjecting itself to different measures and endeavors deemed beneficial to the school

as a whole. It is quite rare to witness genuine progress if we mirror it in the context of Philippine development. However, DOSCST is one institution that prides itself on orchestrating development fast in a very short period. In its 25 years of service, its accomplishments have leveled itself to other institutions that have been established much longer. It is also worth mentioning the transition by which this progress came to life – the rise of buildings (external changes) such as the opening of another campus in Banaybanay as well as internal efforts like the school’s thrust towards Outcomes-Based Educatin conforming to national standards. In the course of many months now, the school subjected itself to different challenges for educational betterment like the AACCUP Survey Visit, among others. As anticipated, all eight (8) programs were accredited to Level II. This is just one of the many stepladders the school ventured as an acknowledgement that the latter will positively contribute to its standardization. It has also included everyone in the process, recognizing the effort and contribution of its constituents. We cannot think of anyone who is more than geared towards relevant changes than the people behind the school – the college president Dr. Edito Sumile, school heads, faculties, staffs and the students. Nonetheless, if this publication could pitch in some suggestions, we would say that in the efforts the school goes through, the students – as one primary client and forefront of all the aforementioned efforts should utmost reap the benefits. And by saying these we reiterate advantages such as better service during enrollment, decent comfort rooms, free printing of grades and other similar transactions, among others. In the end, minute details matter. Notwithstanding these, as a counterpart, Ang Sidlakan will continue to strive to conform itself to the goals of the school. It will make itself part of the thread that weaves our aspiration and vision towards the goal of making DOSCST a university of excellence, innovation and inclusion in the future. After all, we reflect the institution. SA

A case of FAIRNESS

Real Talk

ridicule or prejudge others. And it is a crimeto say that a student is a know-nothing based on his choice of study.Hence, regardless of course and preferences, each is endowed with a gift distinctive to us and that each gift

should never be considered inferior or superior to each other. Furthermore, intellectuals and

dull people should never be blamed to one particular group of people only but the former and the latter are present even in one discipline. At times, those people who fail to acknowledge that in the eyes of God we are all equal are the ones who are the real parched but strives to hide this by imposing on the subject of who are intelligent and otherwise. And always remember, even the nincompoops have stories to tell. They too have contributed something to the world. Ngano? Kaya nimo iyang gihimo saila klase? Kaya nimo magmemorize og scientific names? Kaya nimo mag balance og assets of liabilities? Kaya nimo magtaod og ligid? Kaya nimo mag Karate? Kung dili, pagpuyo. SA

antog ra [grammatically incorrect, bugo, wala nagtarong og skwela] kay **** diay ang course’.

Ladies and gentlemen, let us put light on these statements that are most resonant inside the school but are nonetheless d e m e a n i n g . Intelligence transcends borders. This is emphasized on the Theory of Multiple Intelligences which validates and supports that the latter comes in many forms, created through different styles and abilities and performed through different actions. The college offers different courses, therefore, different fields of expertise. Henceforth, one cannot directly profane and bastardize somebody on grounds of his/her course or field of

study. Moreover, it is more preposterous to assume that intelligence is isolated only on a person’s ability in the usage of the English language specifically in speech and writing. Similarly, if a person is not predispose to numbers, it does not necessarily mean brainlessness. Each field has their own particular focus. An Education student may find it hard to amass mechanical gears that BITM students find easy if coupled with proper supervision. Likewise, it is also difficult for BITM students to learn specific jargons that are thoroughly studied in Education courses. An Agriculture student may find it very easy to make a plant grow

but may wither if attempted by an Engineering student. The point here is that we have different capabilities. We

may exercise ingenuity in certain aspect but we will eventually fall short if faced with activities that are alien to us. My point is clearly manifested in the words of Albert Einstein,“Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.” We are supposed to be intelligent in our own field of expertise. But ironically, we have not even managed to master even its basics. Suffice to say, we don’t have no rightto

No Offense, Hobbits

Bulacan State University (BulSU) at ng kanyang administrasyon.

releasing IDs on time, why not contact a print shop to do the job? I’m sure they’ll never lack supplies, and maybe it will be released sooner. Minding the budget? Well, with the whole studentry paying the fee, how come?

Second, why not buy more supplies? We have the money. Buying more does not mean wasting it, true? We could still

utilize the excess for the next printing. I believe I share the same thought with most in this. Yet, if the concerned still chooses to impose as is, may it be inclined with better service as which should be. Indeed, we wish to be independent. Yet, if our desire is not met by our capacity, we shall be keen enough to cease until such time that we are more equipped. In my personal reckoning of the case, I find it groundless to declare a shortage of supplies. We deserve an explanation. We deserve better service. We are paying right; maybe we as well ought to be tended right. SA

Three months past the starting of classes and one month more before it ends, going inside the

campus still served a dilemma for some freshmen. Why? Ask the ID maker. It is a fact that in the college, our IDs serve multiple purposes. Foremost, it is our identification as bona fide students in the institution, along with providing us access to the school library and the gate. Not to mention that it is a pre-requisite before our OSA Head signs the clearance before finals.Without it, students undergo the hassle of presenting alternatives just for the sake of enjoying the privilege we are entitled with. Do we deserve additional

burden caused not by our neglect of payment but of the dawdling process of ID release? No. I find this unfitting with the fact that our payment for the IDs is compulsory. Without requiring me, or anyone, to be Mathematics major, I can come to a huge summation of money collected upon enrolment. So how come a print-out informing everyone that the releasing of IDs will be postponed until further notice due to lack of supplies is still posted in the door of the Office of Student Affairs? Don’t we have enough money to suffice the purchase of ID materials since everyone is collected the ID Fee in the first semester of freshmen enrolment?

This has raised brows and drew consternation from the students affected and aware. Behind all these, however,

the concerned office has not given an official statement to answer the issue. All we were given was that the shortage of supply underlined the delay of ID releases this school year. But, may we ask, why was there a shortage in the first place? Whose responsibilities have been neglected? Who is to blame? We are left baffled by this concern. With these, two solutions came to my mind. One, if we are incapable of

The moment you go back to your core and contemplate on things around you is the moment that

you reckon you have the responsibility towards others- to serve as the pen that will write the truth, the fingers that will strum the cords to make music that will resonate to the world and to serve as the light for the lost and weary soul. Sometimes, somewhere, somebody out there possesses the ideas, the right kind of knowledge but fails to make it known for fear of thought that they are insignificant and too little in this big world. This fear feeds upon itself heavy enough to become an impediment in the pursuit of a free and liberating expression. Hence, perpetuating the silenced truth and the lies. But with concerted effort, enlightenment and truth will engulf ignorance. We will heave each other with a sizeable amount of concern. We will foster awareness and compassion for each other. We will become receptive towards other people’s thoughts to elicit response from them. We will cross the bounds of circumspection to yield out your supplication, expressions, desires, knowledge, good thoughts, solutions to problems to make our home, this institution and the world a better place. We will make ourselves the mouth for others to speak. Together, we will vent the whims of the subdued. SA

the first plan of the LGU-Banaybanay – to communicate with Mindanao State University (MSU) to have the latter’s campus in Banaybanay. Yet, the existing law of State Universities and Colleges (SUCs) which prohibits the creation of satellite campuses beyond the jurisdiction contradicts to their idea. The campus, headed by Mr. John M. Bagcal, offers three degree courses: Bachelor of Elementary Education (BEEd) now with 51 enrollees; Bachelor in Agricultural Technology (BAT), 29 enrollees; and Bachelor of Science in Information Technology (BSIT) with 40 enrollees. SA

The leaders’ caliber is shown on how they deal with their people, how they solve problems and face predicaments, and how they carry out programs and celebrations. Same is true in the academe where Supreme Student Government (SSG) takes the lead. But when Siglakas Dos Mil Kinse ended, it left questions, doubts and clamor. It was pretty obvious that many blamed the SSG. So, what’s the real score? It is apparent that when the celebration came and went, it left the confidant-of-the-Tatenians, Tate Confessions on Facebook, with loads of complaints – boring fun run, expensive tickets during night events, unsynchronized activities (which really is inevitable in every intramurals), and questionable results. For these, who could not compare the boom of Siglakas Katorse from the aftermath boos of Siglakas Dos Mil Kinse? It is, of course, the SSG officers’ obligation to bring and serve the best for the college constituents. Yet, many were disappointed after the morning activity on the first day. Furthermore, it is their duty to look after for the preparation. For instance, in preparing the decorations and sound system ahead of time, not only when the parade starts. Thus, it made the students queue outside the campus for more than half an hour. Lucky enough, the weather went well with the affair. Most importantly, it is their responsibility to provide transparency on the tally of points gained by every competing team. Thus, one team may believe that some scores were biased when the pronouncement of winners took place. Consequently, this made the main focus of the undertaking, which was to foster camaraderie, vanished. Everyone has been blaming the SSG officers. But are they solely to be blamed? For realizations, why not try to look at ourselves and reassess? Why not stop comparing the present administration to last year’s? In the very first place, it is us who put them in the position. We are these persons wearing more than a corrective lens to grasp a single dot of stain in a white meter-long cloth, but are blind enough to not see and appreciate the thing as a whole. After all, Siglakas Dos Mil Kinse was not a total fiasco. Undeniably, we did enjoy it. As long as everyone participates, does what is best, and extends full support in every activity, there should be no one to be blamed far ahead. SA

The Local Government Unit (LGU) of Banaybanay, headed by Mayor Adalia L. Tambuang, paved the way for the opening of the Davao Oriental State College of Science and Technology - Banaybanay Campus (DOSCST-BC) on July 6 this year. Due to the DOSCST-BC’s lack of facilities, formerly known as East West Colleges’s, the LGU has given the subsidy to augment the resources of the campus. Moreover, most of the campus personnel are job orders paid by the government. Director for Instruction, Dr. Roy M. Padilla, on the other hand, revealed

The Davao Oriental State College of Science and Technology (DOSCST) is currently taking its path towards the institution’s refinement as the budget for building construction increased to P78 million from last year’s P40 million. “The increase was based on normative financing, soft-leveling, the school’s accreditation status, and the total number of the students accommodated,” the Director for Instruction Dr. Roy M. Padilla, said. The specification set by the engineers on August 28, 2015 was the presentation of a P40 million administration building designed by the three bidders. The construction will commence this year in the school’s mini-forest. Plans for the building construction include the transfer of all school offices except for the organizational offices in the said new administration building.

Moreover, a pair of two-storey academic building with ten classrooms each, located next to the soon to be dismantled Make Shift (MS) Building, is under construction. The core of the said building will be a viewing deck facing Mt. Hamiguitan and also facing the school oval. Additionally, the Science Laboratory Building, situated adjacent to the school clinic and the 2-million worth kindergarten school construction from H building to the existing nursery building, are still under construction. Soon to be built are the P24-million worth of two-storey building in Cateel Campus (CC) and a multipurpose hall in San Isidro Campus (SIC). The total number of buildings to be constructed is to be seen in a few months or days and this project is fully state-funded. SA

We are built on the foundation of whoever built us. Authority is vested among leaders for the mere purpose of exacting control and order within an organization; authority is vested for a good cause. What happens, however, when this authority is abused? The school as an institution is a training ground for leaders. It is where we see and learn the real purpose and meaning of leadership. We are given the opportunity to develop and hone our sense of responsibility and comprehension of the diversity of human behavior towards fully understanding the role and importance of a leader. In here, we are molded into becoming the type of leader that we can be. What happens, however, if our honing foundations exact unto us examples that are in irony with the basic principles of what they sought to teach us? When the teacher is like “I am the teacher here! If you think you are better than me, oh how dare you? If you like me, I’ll like you. But if you don’t like me, who are you? I don’t like you too! I am a teacher, you are just my student. Wait until you become,” we are left submerged into questioning the exactness of their teaching for, in the end, the groundwork of effective teaching is values. But as we think it stops there, it doesn’t. They also quarrel among themselves. ‘Nagpapataasan ng ihi,’ as we call it – boasting proud of the superiority gained from the acquisition of a high position or degree earned. I need not make mention of those I found guilty of this crime, but think not of yourselves alone but of your responsibilities as well. Misunderstanding is inevitable. It would occur when pride arises. Some see it destructive, although it teaches us good things, too. If resolved, it binds a group closer, tighter. But it is not really good when it reaches to the point that someone is like “I am your head. I am a regular instructor. I am a professor! While you - who are you?” No, not just that. It’s not good for the teachers to fight among themselves. Period. Who says those who are vested with higher authority has the right to force under them those of lower ranks? It’s a clear violation of the fundaments of their authority. The teachers mold the students. They are the norms adhered to. They are the epitomes looked up on. Therefore, they shall be as responsible in setting examples of themselves. If your actions have already inspired others to do more, learn more, dream more and become more, then you are a leader. SA

Bribery. Corruption. Abuse of power. All these and more have slaughtered the Philippine socio-political society. All these and more, we wished to end. But how? It is a fact when people say that the foundation of achieving great things is the minute entities that compose it- the experiences, people and time. After all, great things come from small beginnings. Thus, I propose that in addressing the humongous problems we are facing, let us draw roots to the earlier stages of development. Our schools play a huge part in developing our personalities. It presents new ideas that would influence our perception and manner of addressing situations. It exposes us to experiences that would mold us, either directly or indirectly, towards becoming better (or worse) individuals. These make school a critical catalyst in a person’s personal growth. It is also in this stage where we are exposed to different roles- some leaders, others followers. The former contents himself into taking orders. The

latter fulfills himself into subjecting orders. But there are several types of leaders. One who has the capacity to do things, another who leads but has the problems with understanding the extent of his role- someone who tends to think as if he/she is higher and always better than his subordinates, and those who do not even consider others’ opinion over his/her and another who supposes leadership despite the capacity to do so. Herein, the problem takes place. If we are to wish for a good government, let us weigh first the person’s abilities to lead. I know some in this institution, who are leaders that are unmindful of other people’s views. They are imposers and power abusers who govern organizations but have done only few, if not nothing. Let us start choosing good leaders while we are still in school. With this, we are changing two things: one, leaders who are incapable will realize their discrepancies, and two, our society may be able to meet a better tomorrow. The change we want starts within us. Let us start now, in school. SA

Social media has changed the game of communication, expression, networking and information dissemination. Do social media really affect us? Or do we affect social media?

These are the questions that I often ask myself whenever I scroll down and read facebook and twitter posts, blog entries, and articles that are circulated online. One thing that is certain is that, social media serves as a voice for everyone. It can create another identity of oneself. However, does this voice serve the common good? Or is it just one of the scapegoats of an ill wind, apathy or ignorance?

On Irresponsible Posts Inappropriate selfies, uninformed rants, and cold wars, these and more have caught my attention in the social networking sphere. As much as social media gives us a better advantage in almost everything, its downside have grown so much worse as this generation considers social media as an extension of themselves. As much as this tool gives us wings, it also gives our hands a crutch that whenever emotion strikes us best, it is the social media that we take in refuge first. Why? Is a helping hand not enough? Are lending ears do not matter? Does a blindsight enable us to be

better? We should think again.

The Youth’s Role Most of the people that I know that take refuge in social media are the youth. “The youth is the hope of the motherland,” we know this best since our national hero have left us this legacy. However, we, as the youth, do we embody this principle or ideology in our heart? Or is it just for show? I wonder what Rizal would be ranting in today’s youth.

As we try to reflect and absorb what we do one day at a time, we then ask ourselves – are we living an excellent life as today’s youth? I believe that social media is just one of those innovations that is primarily created to improve civilization, not to destroy it. As some of my friends’ quote it, “I’m losing hope in humanity.” We should not let this happen. We, as the youth, should have known better since social media is just in its early stages in this generation. We should not blame social media for all the turmoil that it caused. We affect social media. The power that it gives us is limitless; hence, with great social media in our hands, the greater responsibility that we acquire. SA

ave you experienced coming to school late? Have you experienced running

after your breath just to arrive at a rendezvous on time? Have you been in a situation wherein after your long run, you’ll discover later on that you’ve forgotten the most important thing that you have to bring with you?

This is a story of Tata nga Tanga.

It was late midnight of Sunday. He placed his notebook above bedside drawer. He had just finished studying his lessons. Tomorrow will be the day of his exams in all subjects. His first session will start at 8:00am at the H1, the farthest building in the campus. Before totally closing his eyes, he set the digits in his alarm clock to “6:30 AM – Ring once”. It was a good night sleep. He woke up and looked at his alarm. “Huh? Ohmeghaad! It’s --- 7:00?” He dropped his jaw. He is going to be late! He ran to the bathroom, took a quick shower,

dressed

himself and ate a portion of his breakfast. He grabbed his bag and notebook from above his drawer. At 7:13, he was out of their house which is at a subdivision near “Riverside”. He took a pedicab and headed his way to school. “Musulod sa ta kadiyot sa Kapayas Gang hah?” The driver said. He didn’t answer. He was out of his mind. His thought was on every line on his notes which he had been glancing since then. It was too late when he noticed they have gone three kilometers far from the road to school. They were at the heart of the sitio. He glanced at his newly bought wristwatch. He literally dropped his eyeball when he realized it’s already 7:40. “Oh, gosh! Kuya, pwede papaspasan. Late naman gud ko!” “Kuya, paspasi please…” He has been repeating this line ten times already. But his blood boiled in annoyance when he looked at the driver nodding at the beat of the sound for he was actually on his earphones. “Grrrrrrrr!!!” Without noticing it, they were finally back on track. But when they madeit near St.

Peter Life Plan and C h a p e l , he just c a n ’ t imagine

himself riding in turtle-ish pace. [Yeah, you know what I mean]. He just extended his patience. After a few minutes they entered Martinez Subdivision and his eyes regained brightness. He was in high spirits in an instant. “Duol na lang jud!” he exclaimed. He forgot that it was Monday and most of his co-passengers came from their respective places. So the driver had to distribute them to their boarding houses, one by one, door to door. First they entered the gates of Phase 1, then Phase 2, Phase 3, Phase 4, Phase 5, Phase 6, respectively. Last passenger is, as he anticipated, to the eighth phase. That was not fun at all but at least he was able to venture the streets and saw a glimpse of the beauty of Brgy. Dahican. Finally, he was gladthat he has reached his destination. It was 8:13 am already when the cab arrived at school. Quickly, he pulled out a ten-peso coin from his newly bought pants and ran towards the congested gate. “Nganong nagtapok man ni sila diri uy. Excuse me please! Nagdali ko. Excuse!”“Nagdali pud baya mi,”answered one of them. He looked at his watch again and again. It is 8:14am, just a minute left and I am over. “Dugaya pa ani uyyyyy,”he murmured. “Maglagot pud ta aning guard usahay! Last week, ka-five nag-check ug C.O.R, karon check

on, you already have the catheter!) So where’s the comfort there? In the end, it is the students that made themselves uncomfortable. Should they also be reminded that Dobby, from Harry Potter, is now a free elf and does not have any master at all? Or maybe, remind them that their mom doesn’t work here in school, so they’re responsible for themselves. Or maybe this: remind them that they don’t have their yayas here because this is not kindergarten, this is college! If we are applying hygiene to ourselves, then why not apply it also tothe comfort rooms? The person that will use the C.R. next is not responsible of the filthiness left inside. It is you, and you alone, who is accountable for your own actions. Let us at least try to impose proper etiquette on ourselves, unless we don’t know what etiquette means. Aw. SA

riendly reminder: Do not eat food while reading. This is a trap! Unless you have a strong system.

Have you ever gotten to roam around the school campus and surveyed all the comfort rooms? What can you say? Disgusting? ‘Yuck’? Count me in. CRs … COMFORT ROOMS! Are they really comfortable? In our case, it’s no doubt … not. I don’t even understand how it still stands by its name beyond the fact that all that it is filth, dirt and stink. One meter far from the C.R. and the smell is like a death spell casted to you. It stinks so bad that it works better than viper venom in messing your senses. Disgusting and infuriating! As you get to wander inside, the muddy shoeprints of the students were all over the floor. Check the cubicles and the bowls that were once white in color but now happens to be so sunny (if you know what I mean). Bowls were also clogged and you even get to discover a thing-that-should-not-be-named-because-it-is-awfully-disgusting, floating in a rum colored

liquid like a little submarine. Students should at least be reminded that if at first it didn’t succeed… KEEP ON FLUSHING! Moreover, in the boys’ Comfort Room, bowls clogged because boys had found their new ashtray, throwing off the butts of the cigarettes inside the bowls as if it was the biggest ashtray they had ever seen in their entire life. Such a great idea they have in mind! Terrific! This should at least be recorded in the Guinness Book of World Record. Very innovative! *clap clap* Then take this, bathe with expensive fruity perfume, face covered with vibrant colors, dressed neatly and presentably, along with her smart physique but doesn’t even know how to observe hygiene in comfort rooms. A total contradiction of how they make themselves well-groomed is how they use the comfort rooms. And the boys, you get to think on how well they can shoot a ball when playing basketball, when they can’t even shoot their own urine in the urinal that’s in front of them already. (I mean come

Demon poessession, from the Greek word “diamonizomai” and “echeindaimonion”,isheld by many belief systems to be the spirit possession of an individual by a malevolent preternatural being,

commonly known as a demon. It happened already in schools in Mati City Division like in Macambol, Dawan, and allegedly in our institution. Upon the entrance of the month of August, we heard that six women from evening classes were said to have been possessed. They were said to posess extraordinary strength which enabled them to throw away anything around them regardless of size and mass.Students said that it happened because trees were cut down. (Trees in the MS Building are believed to be their homes). They said, these entities were disturbed, causing them to create nuisances to students. However, some said that it was just a result of stress. But behind that scary situation, one question pre-dominated and has remained unanswered: stressed or possessed?

Mental Health Issues Most of the doctors, nurses, and all that are in the medical profession don’t believe that there is this so-called “demon possession”. They said instead, it was just a result of either stress or oppression. Often, they call it “chemically imbalanced”, secondary to stress, which causes mental health problem commonly known as schizophrenia.

Schizophrenia, in general use, is a mentality or approach characterized by inconsistent or contradictory

elements. It is a psychotic disorder characterized by loss of contact with the environment, by noticeable deterioration in the level of functioning in everyday life, and by disintegration of personality

expressed as disorder of feeling, thought (as delusions), perception (as hallucinations),

and behavior, as defined by Merriam-Webster dictionary.

“Stress is our body’s way of coping up or responding to any demand

or threat. In a way, stress is not always bad. Sometimes, it

even motivates us to perform and do

better. How to deal

w i t h

stress varies from one person to another” said Mrs. Michelle Suzanne L. Tabotabo, RN, MN, a faculty of the Institute of Nursing and Health Care (INHC). “People respond to stress differently. Some view it positively, while others take it the opposite way.”When you feel stressed, you feel like something is impinging you, trying to get at you. Something that is maybe, trying to get inside you or even to get hold of you. You may or may have no sense of what that “something” is. Your mind is pre-occupied. You can’t think well, you wanted to cry, to shout, and go wild.

The Chinese BeliefAs days gone by, people were asking what really happened, students wondered what could be, but one thing must be known.Risky times at the stock market? Almost near to an accident while driving? These, they say, were just a few of the many signs the unfavorable “ghost month” is setting in. Even that demon possession was considered a sign. What is a “ghost month”?According to Chinese tradition, the so-called “ghost month” which always fall on the seventh month of the lunar calendar, is “the time when the gate of hell will open to allow the ghosts and spirits to go back to the living world”, designated from August 14 to September 12, this year in our calendar.

The Christian Belief “Mental illness is a fairly recent idea”, Pastor Edgar Tayao, a pastor of Family Church of Christ said in an interview with AngSidlakan. “And as far as I know, this concept did not exist at all at the time the Bible was written.” There are a lot of books in the Bible that could prove that demons really exist.“Bad spirits operate on empty hearts and puzzled minds. Hunger is not a reason but a way of Satan to shake your faith. Demon-possessed persons are really strong because the demon inside them is strong. You can also refer to John 10:10, which says “the thief (demon) cometh to steal, to destroy, and to kill.”Furthermore, the book of Matthew could justify it.Matthew 8:16-17 says:16 And when even was come, they brought unto him many possessed with demons: and he cast out the spirits with a word, and healed all that were sick:17 that it might be fulfilled which was spoken through Isaiah the prophet, saying: Himself took our infirmities, and bare our diseases. Now, is it possible that some or even all demon possessions in the Bible were simply cases of curing mental illnesses?” the Pastor asked. “And if your answer is “some”, then can we just know the difference?” SA

LITERARY

We are born in a country bountiful in heritage and tradition where the preservation of cultural wealth upholds the greater priority. We are living in a country prided by its native languages as a bolstering catalyst for globalization. We are citizens of a country rich in artists and change makers. Even more so, we are part of a country aiming itself towards global dominance and involvement. Shall we be afraid of adapting to the international norms in aspects of language and literature? True enough, there is no better way of upholding tradition than profusely devoting one’s works to conforming to native languages and mediums. As Filipinos, we are better acknowledged in our society on our usage of the Filipino language and our native vernaculars. And, indeed, these are mediums worth boasting for. My concern, however, duly grounds itself on the inquiry of whether or not it is viable to conclude that the usage of the English language in our literary culture presents a threat to the preservation of such. I contend not. Take my perspective for once. Explaining how the English language promotes the Filipino culture is hard, but I have one contention for you to consider: English is a global language widely acknowledged. For some, it is considered the universal language of communication. Taking this into consideration, we are opening for ourselves the door towards our goal of global identity. Take F. Sionil Jose, Anthony Tan, and Dean Francis Alfar for example. These writers and poets made it big in the Philippine and international literary stage. Jose has been awarded the 2000 Chevalier dansl’Ordre des Arts etLettres in France among other major honors in the country. These artists are life-size epitomes of the humongous opportunities that exist for Filipino writers in the English language. Let us void in our minds the notion of English as a detrimental peril towards achieving progress and development. Rather, let us seek to govern ourselves towards the inception that it is an aiding factor in the springing of new possibilities and opportunities for the tenured and budding literary artists of our country. In this modern era where the challenges to Filipino writers become more momentous, we are called to take on these challenges head-on. Let us defile the restriction of fear and take instead huge leaps of faith. For in anything in this world, including literature and progress, the famous business motto applies: The higher the risks, the higher the returns. SA

I saw nothing but an endless darkness. The sound of silence was deafening. The coldness ravished my system.

I felt my breath on my throat,Wanting to get out,

I was gasping…I tried to hold on to something,

But there’s none…Even my shadow had left me.

I bit my lip and then savored my gore…‘Twasdrippin’ on the side of my lips…

There were no tears coming from my eyes,No voice coming out…

And then I saw a bright light from a distant.I stretched out my arm to grasp it,

But something’s dragging me away…Away from the very bright light…

My vision was almost misty,“Take me…”It was hoarse,

Almost a whisper…Slowly, the light was getting dull. Then everything went pitch black.

The last thing I heard; The last beat of my heart…

I was taken.

I’d like to hear the hugot details further, but I’m sooooooo late. Chismosa lagi ba. “Excuse me.” I said politely to her. As she moves, I run as fast as Flash and all the trees bend down and the leaves fell because of the sudden motion I made. Pero char lang, nag-heels kaya ko. “Hooooooy!” The heads inside the classroom turns to me when I finally arrive. “Ning skwela pa ka nga wa may instructor!” Aileen, my bestest friend, peevishly said in a deafening sound. “Mao na kay dugayan!” Naomi added. “Sorry ha? Daghan man gud tao sa pathway. Nag procession pa sa kalangayan.” Deadpan, I sat crotchety. “K. Tara na?” I stared blankly to Aileen when she said that. “Bag-o ra gud ko ni-abot. Pwede wait lang?” “Gutom yot. Taraaaa!” Then they forcefully drag me through the door. Cheezus! I’ve already conquered the dilemma of passing through that skinny pathway, and now, I’ll have to suffer the dilemma again?! Oh c’mon! Gimme a break! Char. “Samoka! Oh lage tara na.” They put me down and made our way through the pathway. I’m ready this time, you skinny pathway! Bring all the confessions on! Ta ta ta, maki-chismis ta besh. SA

The sun was already ablazed the moment I got out from our house. The heat was prickling badly on my skin and it was digging to get inside. “Fug. Why so hot? I’m so hot.” I glanced at my wrist watch and the time reads 7:51. “Oh great! Late na sad ko! MS pa naman classroom nako.” “College ka ma’am?” As manong driver asked that, my subconscious was whining, bata pa man tawun ko ug edad ug dagway oy. Ma’am jud?! “Yes po.” I answered him, albeit it’s already obvious because of my uniform. I was hurrying to get to my destination. The time already reads 8:11, but, better late than never. I came to pass a lot of students on the pathway, all having different businesses; listening to music with earphones plugged in, studying a bunch of photocopied papers, laughing their heart out, chitchatting as if they were the only students there not minding if others would hear it, confessing their love life’s situation, complaining about their instructors while others were just like souls passing through. Sentiently, I happen to observe everything. “Bayuda! Huwata ko bi!” Said with a squeaky voice and a girl with a fruity scent came to pass after me, since the pathway is too small, our shoulder blades collided. “Hala! Sorry miss.” She said unfeignedly and I gave her a slight nod. “Hoy bay! Akong report

ba!” All the student’s scrutinizing eyes went to the guy who shouted. Instead of minding them, he just went straightly to his friend. “Asa ka?” A low voice from my back said. “Mu-skwela ko bay. Musulod sa ko.” The baritone voice answered and it was followed with a giggling laugh of his friend. “Musulod pa diay ka? Wa na gani kay sulod-sulod atong mi-agi.” I crack a smile upon hearing that. Grabe na jud! As I was listening to all those chitchats, I almost forgot that I still have a class to attend to. I wanted to run but the pathway is covered with sea of people, so I did brisk walking. “Hi. Nag-sheft ka?” I made a sudden frown when I heard that. “Wala na ko nag-sheft oy, kapoy.” Her friend confidently answered. The frown on my face gets even deeper. Naa na diay culinary sa Tate, besh? Then I realized, Tate only offers an HRM course. SHIFT man gud diay to oi, sorry gud. I checked my phone for a text and there’s one from my best friend. -B*tch wun? Room na mi.- I replied her… -Hapit na. Traffic sa EDSA.- I put my phone back in my pocket and still taken by the waves of the students. “Pst hoy!” I turn around

assuming that I was the one being talked to, but it was the girl on the bench in MNSD. “Oh?” The girl gave him an innocent look. “Pakopya unya sa assignment ha?” He said grinning from ear to ear. “Huh? Thursday pa man to.” “Sige ra gud oy. Ge na, una sa ko.” And made his way through the midst of people. This pathway surely is full of students’ thing. You’ll hear a lot of libak, MMK stories and see different kinds of people around here. I can’t take it anymore. All the frustration, the pain, the regrets of not being able to fulfill myself … all these boils down to this moment. I’ve had enough. She’s too much. Mind emptied by a darkened heart, I went where my feet took me. The kitchen. I grabbed on to my last resort. I have long thought about this, but have never had enough courage to do so. But I have now. So I let the blade do what it does best – slice. Blood oozed on the floor as the frail body dropped. She’s crying. “Do you really think I feel happy knowing that I am the one who’s making you sad? I care about you, son. So much. I want you to be very happy. I really do. I am your mother; I just want what’s best for you. All these restraints are because I am afraid of what might happen to you. I feel double your aches, thrice even. I bleed your scrapes. I flu your fevers. I die with your pains … but I never thought you’d end up killing me. I love you.” That struck me hard but it came too late. Regret really comes last. I killed her… by killing myself. SA

Poseidon`s favor, 26-18. Jesabel Canlubo (United) appeared with a bang but Plaza threw an impregnable dagger that answered the adversary. Quadalquiver loomed with streak points with a three-point play that cruised a 7-0 run (29-27) as game turned ferocious due to the couple of heavyweights (Quadalquiver and Plaza) that clashed physically as the referee officiated to dismiss them out of the game. Gut-check time with a real pressure cooker where Usebio attempted for the jugular to lunch a three-point but failed. Poseidon`s offense got shredded as Usebio lobbed another three-point attempt as basket`s counted and turned the tide of the game with their first lead and rolled out to be the final score (30-29). That`s the dagger that got into a real barn-burner. “Kumpyansa raman gud kaayo,” Poseidon`s player Portarcos uttered. “Even though natambakan mi pinakauna, pero nabawi ra gihapon namo that`s because SIC is United,” United`s player Canlubo conceded. A prominent event unfolding once a year, summoning the blitz that includes intense clash of departments and campuses to showboat their guts and recognize the exquisite soul of sports –Siglakas. I suppose that the participants and the whole of the college vigorously prepared to cherish the euphoric spirit of Siglakas. However, in meeting this euphoria, everybody must be involved as either contenders or cheerers that they may be able to savor the aroma akin to greatness. But to what extent is this notion observed? Well, if there`s radiant, there`s also dire. Venues on different Siglakas events may exhibit on gym, oval, or distant courts. All set in accordance to students’ accessibility. Yet, beyond the ease of access, some students chose to create their own assemblies to enjoy certain selves. Take into account their appearance on internet cafes, playing e-sports such as Defense of the Ancients 2 (DOTA 2) and neglecting the events served for them students. While some are wise enough to just pick up stuffs necessary to claim attendance and then flee with alacrity, it does not end there. Many students think of the yearly event as a vacation, whethera time to come home or a five-day rest from classes. For attendances, others resort to contacting high officials or prominent individuals to mend records and excuse their absences. Unsportsmanlike, as I see it.How can we ignite the soul if fairness is not observed? Although Siglakas Dos Mil Kinse’s theme is “Strengthening Binds, Solidifying Unity”, it did less, if not nothing, to alter the students` view. Not even for them to consider the responsibility of partaking in the events in exchange for the week-long festivity. We did not ask for it, true, but it’s a hard fact that we all benefit from it. As for myself, I see the need for the students to sort things for themselves and realize that our participation in these activities outline the rate of its success. Perhaps, it appears like there is a need for parents, students, instructors and officers of various school organizations to collaborate and ultimately come up with a solution. The issue may not be shunned, still it can be lessened.SA

Unforeseen Jucel Usebio (United) flunked a ballistic three-point shot for a bizarre win in a mythical Basketball girls with an emphatic rout at the DOSCST Gymnasium last September 04, 2015 as Poseidon frittered away the finals berth over United in a pulsating 30-29 omega. Syra Lintogonan (Poseidon) was wicked sick as Elizabeth Plaza and Kristelyn Companero assisted her to bestow a bulky 16-0 run with Beloni Portarcos` two splendid blocks. United had a tough road to hoe but they can still try the “Hail Mary”. They`re not out of it yet as Usebio ended the 16 unanswered points. Arvy Quadalquiver fagged together with Marigold Quinones to produce a bitty requital as they minimized the margin into 10 (20-10) that halted the slaughter with dominative Poseidon. Plaza startled the second half with an eye-opening shot that switched the place into a bedlam. Quinones then contributed a lofty shot with a counted foul as she emerged on Quadalquiver and battled against Companero which ended the third quarter and was still on

confidence which drove them through conquering various events as they bound their selves and solely appeared formidable. The Engineering and Technology Department (ETD) claimed the second place with 925 points while the Criminology and Related Sciences Department (CRSD) took the third place with 760 points. Mentors vied against other 12 competing teams [nine departments and three campuses] and dethroned last year`s champion, the ETD Builders edging them with a 35-point margin. Defenders regain Title vs BuildersBy Mark Oliver L. Alvite

Championships have never been this intense in past Siglakas compared to this year’s basketball final game on men division. Usual protagonists CRSD Defenders and ETD Builders met to settle supremacy in hardcourt. The projected teams to meet for championship proved worthy as they wiped away their rivals, going to finals with both 4-0 records in their brackets. The Defenders seemed to have won the game easily with an imposing 16-0 blast halfway in the first quarter, silencing the anxious ETD fans inside the DOSCST gym. CRSD’s quintet in Baay, Bohol, Lemente, Estologo, and Mutia displayed team work, matched with suffocating defence and seamless offense almost put the game away early in the game before ETD put on a short run led by Sambayon, ending the

first canto with a 26-14 lead for Defenders. The lopsided scoring continued till the end of second quarter, where ETD’s main man Sambayon was bothered with fouls, prompting the local star to sit for the rest of the first half. CRSD’s balanced line-up enabled them to rest their starters. Relievers like Responte, Blas, and Parame did their roles, although allowing the ETD to do some runs led by Bastida and Comendador. With the surprise entry of ETD’s injured big man Rebalde in the 3rd quarter, the Builders built a short momentum, cutting the huge lead to just seven, 60-67. In the payoff period, ETD could not complete their heroic run against the mighty defenders, frustrating Sambayan and his team.

By Arvil Junior Gonzales To top it all off, the title is not typographically erroneous.

Siglakas, DOSCST’s annual sports fair, is undeniably one of the most anticipated events in this college. In fact, it is the sole season when the various departments and campuses of this college converge and interact with each other. With it highlighting sports and socio-cultural competitions, it draws expectations from the sport-fancy, competitive DOSCST crowd.

So was it just our steep expectations or something else that made Siglakas Dos Mil Kinse seem to fall short? Let me mention the too tentative schedule and inadequacy of information dissemination to supersede the case. I mean more than just the delay; even the contestants don’t know the final venues and schedules of events due to its changing then and now.

I came to talk with students from the extension campuses, all having mixed

DOSCST Gym. The defenders reclaim their lost glory by defeating the builders, 88-77.

Sigla?kas Dos Mil Kinsecontemplations on the dry and unruly event. One statement from Cateel Campus struck me. “Dili namo feel nga welcome mi. Mura lang ug wala. Mao to, pag-abot nag-lung-ag mi, tas nangatulog.” A slap in the face

Then came the fun run which was supposed to be fun but was not. Well, for most. I shall say. And I quote a student, “Wala ma’y lingaw oy. Gikapoy ra kog dagan, wa jud koy lingaw nga nasugatan. Naa unta sila’y twist parehas sauna. Maka-dismaya sya besh. Fun run o prosisyon?”

Adding to the pile of consternation is the tally board which was left unfilled – blank and empty as a sheet of tissue from the box. If it does not serve its purpose of updating the students of the current ranking of teams, it may better be kept folded and not displayed for nothing. (Just sayin’)

As we expected for something better

in the night events, the ticket prices suddenly rose. I mean suddenly by the

fact that the students were late informed. Left with no choice (for attendance is at the expense), the shocked minions were forced to buy. Tsk. Tsk.

If not for the Official Candidates of the Misters of the Philippines (which, by the way, made the Search for Mr. and Ms. Siglakas drown deep the strata) and some quite successful events, it would have been a boring week. I tell you this not as a personal view but a collective thought from most students I talk to, the previous Siglakases might not be good but Dos Mil Kinse has sank to the deepest of the totem pole.

My apologies for the harsh words but I’m voicing the students. Take this as a challenge instead.

Although there is no denying of the fact that students play a role in the event’s success, what was written is more likely the most of it. SA

STYLELIFE wear yourself

“Fashion is an endless popularity contest.”Fashion trends are fleeting and so voguish people scamper to adapt to thesestyles. It is something that we deal with every day. From choosing what tees that can make us look striking, to choosing what shoes that can apt our whole outfit. All of which revolves to fashion.

Did you k n o w t h a t

knotting the tees up to the waist is a stylish way of defining a girl’s figure? Whoever says that detailed top and bottom do not fit never tried putting them on together. It’s just actually a matter of mixing details together. Let the prints harmonize and

the colors sing. And no, boys who wear pink are not gays. It actually m a k e s t h e m m o r e virile and

appealing. Most of the time,

people wear something that shouts out about themselves or tells about what they are feeling in that very moment. Fashion becomes the

medium of expression and a reflection of the

mood. Somehow, it mirrors his/her totality. That’s why people are very much fussy on picking the right styles for themselves.

Fashion is revealing. People could begothic, chic, hot, rebel, formal, preppy, and

boyish. Their styles talk for themselves without the need for verbal introduction. And for those who think that fashion’s a great expense, you are totally wrong. No, you don’t actually have to spend money in orderto catch up with new fads. You just have to think out of the box. Be resourceful.Broaden your imagination. Create something unique. Define your own fashion. A n y w a y , fashion is not about going on to what’s new or what’s hot. Fashion is about you. By wearing your own style, you are wearing yourself as well. You don’t have to show off everything to impress everyone. Do not let the dress own you, rather let yourself own the dress. P a r i s Hilton once quoted, “You weren’t born to fit in. You were born to be yourself.”

If high school life is as easy as chick, think twice on college.

Surviving college life is a hard task, much more excelling in it, especially being quite alienated with your environment and the ways and means of your new school. I’ve been there myself and I know just how you feel. That’s not a big problem though. Here are ten tips to survive your freshman year and the rest of your college life, alive.

1. Eat right and stay healthy. In college, we tend to commit ourselves too much on studying and finishing projects on time. That’s positive … and negative. Try striking a balance of a healthy lifestyle and studying. Eat the right kinds of food at the right time of day. Avoid junk foods and carbonated drinks. They’re killers. Sleep on time. It boosts your physical and mental c a p a c i t y to its

fullest. Make yourself your priority. You can’t cherish those hard-earned dreams if you’re all dead and rotten.

2. Get Organized. Know your schedules. Don’t let yourself miss one performance, quiz or submission. Be wise, buy an organizer, use an app or a big wall calendar – a notebook will do, too – whatever it takes for you to remember all the necessary things to do, and be at.Just a tip: Begin the first day of class. It is often then when the teacher presents the schedules/outline of your subject – events, possible requirements, and exam formats, etc. Take note!

3. Aim High! Set goals for yourself and try to achieve them, but don’t limit yourself to it. That way, you’ll have bars to reach. Don’t limit yourself to 3.0, try ra i s ing it to 1 . 0 .

Who knows, maybe you’ll have it right at your transcript.

4. Seek a balance. Make your college life a combination of social and academic events. Don’t tip the balance too far in either direction. Make new friends and expand your circle. Promise, it helps.

5. Get involved on campus. ‘A big problem for a lot of new students is a combination of homesickness and a feeling of not quite belonging. A solution? Consider joining a select group -- and be careful not to go overboard -- of student organizations, clubs, sororities or fraternities, or sports teams. You’ll make new friends, learn new skills, and feel more connected to your school.’

6. Reach out. Don’t be afraid

to tap

SURVIVINGcollegeyour instructors.They don’t bite.

7. Procrastinate on procrastination. If you think of doing your projects later, tell yourself NO. Do what you can with your available time. Projects don’t cease to come, arm yourself with ease when the huge wave of zombie-makers approach.Give yourself deadlines -- and stick to them.

8. Study the hardest subject f irst. Most of us find it hard to study what – Math? Assessment? Finance? Accounting? Know what subject you find most difficult and take more time to understand it. They say, ‘Love what you hate’.

9. Establish a place to study. Find a place, either at school or at home (or boarding house), where you can focus studying. Prefer it somewhere private, somewhere calm and serene. The lesser distractions, the better.

Take it easy. Although challenges may arise, don’t let it eat your brains up. Take things easy. Be positive. Pessimism won’t do you good nor change what’s ahead.

Free yourself from stress, then think. All things end, may it be good or bad, so

smile.
