panoGrapHFirst step of experimentations about the exteriors perception of the project.

This proposal is ruled by a strong interrelation between structure form, plans organization, openings and exterior skin.

From the exterior, the building seems to be an enclosed. The luminous skin makes the link between the interior activity, and the exterior perception.

The tilt allows a maximum illumination from the large openings of the roof, and also reinforces the idea of an ancient artifact, buried in the ground since a long time. The offset frees two large spaces : a public place for Cultural Center activities and a park that increases natural environment and privacy.

The Cultural Center spaces are located on the ground floor, and the library on the first floor, on a large open floor plan area. The central reception area allows access to all the public spaces.

Association of a simple black box and of a luminous surrounding skin that shares some informations, like text and pictures, with the public space.

Earth Curvature, A Global, Local Rest Area

Desert Drops is discreet and surprising, without imposing itself to landscape but inviting to discovering it in a new light.

Its a contextual architecture, miming the formal rules of the place.

It also proposes a new poetic experiment of the desert, between infinity of earth and sky.

  • The Voronoi diagram mimics the patterns of the salt cracks.

The original grid represents the flatness of the desert.

The random placement of the central point and rotation creates the oddness of the shapes.

The same pattern in a circle is used for the coverage.

The intersections of the pattern form the supporting structure.

The pattern creates shapes of ETFE modules. ETFE modules are inflated in order

to create a thermally efficient skin.

The hollowness of the structure provides air insufflation for ETFE modules.

The soil lowering, according to shapes based on voronoi diagram, establishes the living space.

The contrast between materials increases the sensation of sinking into the desert ground.

The Upside Down prototype is a piece of furniture thats aesthetic and various functions are the result of computer-based morphological operations.

The final object produced exemplifies the precision and free form vocabulary attainable with digital production tools.

  • 2. Functions

Using two sides facilitates integration of more functions by flipping the object. The first side is carved in order to fit the human morphology. It can be used as a lounge chair. The second side is designed as two seats and a flat partwhich can be used as a third seat or a table.

    1. Double-sided

81 x 45 cm is the maximum size of MDF panels that we can use for the laser cutter machine. In order to make two cuts per board and provide a little margin in anticipation of the final shape, all the cuts had to fit in a square of 40 cm x 40 cm.Putting two shapes per board optimizes the number of cuts, reduces the amount of waste and lowers overall production costs.180 cm (72) is the longest available length for threaded rods, and is also the average height of a human being.

    3. Comfort

By precisely displacing the control points of the surfaces in the 3D model, the degree of comfort for each function is improved. The edge curvatures are also considered carefully, in prevision of the blending of both surfaces so that the final shape is as smoothe and fluid as possible.

    4. Solid

The final shape is produced by blending both top and bottom surfaces. The smaller end is rounded off, tangentially to the final polysurface. The bigger end is flattened vertically in order to allow a second module to align with the first, which would create a complete monolith.

    5. Sections

Each board was cut from 6mm MDF.6mm of void is added between each panel. It allows a better visual effect and saves material.153 vertical sections are cut from the final polysurfacewith 1,2 cm between each of them.

    6. Final prototype

For a last material saving : 34 of the smaller shapes are cutted in the bigger ones. The whole object is fixed by two treaded rods. Each void is produced by a 6 mm MDF spacer. Each end is pasted for a better aesthetic.
