•The public schools of the Victorian era believed that organized competitive games had many psychological benefits . •These games developed sense of fair play. •Observing rules influences behaviour before, during and after the game. You had to be a good loser . To cheat was shameful, to lose was a part of the game.•Team sports were the best, as they developed team spirit.•Modern sport is of course different. Even in Britain top players in any sport have a professional attitude.



A national passion•Sport plays an important role in people´ s lives in Britain – especially for men it is the main form of entertainment.•Many millions of people také part in some kind of sport at least once a week, other millions are spectators who follow one or more sports.•In Britain hundreds of sports are played, some of which may not be seen as sports at all – croquet, indoor bowling, darts, snooker, board games, etc•The British are fond of competition. However trivial it can seem, there are competitions organized in which gardeners bring their cabbages, leeks, onions, carrots, etc. in the hope of being awarded as the best. The same is the situation with animals.



The social importance of sport

•There is a duty of local authorities to provide and maintain playing fields and other faciities. They are usually very cheap or free.

•There is also a law that prevents the TV rights to the most famous sporting occasions being sold to satelite channels that cannot be recieved by most people.



Some important eventsWimbledon – the oldest tennis tournament in the world•Takes place in June/July in at the All England Club in Wimbledon, London•It is played outdoor on grass•Exccept for sport it is connected also with summer fashion, strawberries with cream, garden parties and long warm English summer evenings•It is essentially a middle-class event

Grand National Steeplechase - at Aintree Racecourse in Liverpool, •Attracts a TV audience of 300 million

English Cup Final – the final of a cnock out competition of all the teams of the league takes place every Mayat Wembley Stadium, London

Cricket“Cricket is more than just a sport; it symbolizes a way of life – a sllow and peacefull rural way of life long sunny summer afternoons, smel of new-mown grass and sound of leather (the ball) connecting with willow (the wood from which cricket bats are made).”[1]

•a bat-and-ball game •played between two teams of 11 players •at the centre of a field is a rectangular 22-yard long pitch•one team takes turn to bat, attempting to score runs; he other team fields. Each turn is known as an innings•the bowler delivers the ball to the batsman who attempts to hit the ball with his bat far enough for him to run to the other end of the pitch and score a run•the batsman continues batting until he is out. The batting team continues batting until ten batsmen are out, at which point the teams switch roles and the fielding team comes in to bat.



Rugby“There are two versions of this fast and aggressive game: rugby union and rugby league. …. Real difference is a matter of social history …… Because of these social origins rugby league in Britain is seen a working class sport, while rugby union is a sport for all middle classes. Except in south Wales. There, rugby union is a sport for all classes, and more popular than football.” [1]

•rugby union, is a full contact team sport •it is based on running with the ball in hand•each team starts the match with 15 players on the field and seven substitutes•players in a team are divided into eight forwards (two more than in rugby league) and seven backs.•players use an oval-shaped ball on a field with H-shaped goalposts on each goal line•points are scored in several ways: a try, scored by grounding the ball in the in-goal area (5 points) and a subsequent conversion kick (2 points); a successful penalty kick or a drop goal each (3 points)•forward passing (throwing the ball ahead to another player) is not allowed



Animals“Traditionally the favourite sports of the British upper class are hunting, shooting and fishing. The most widespread form of hunting is foxhunting – indeed that is what the word “hunting” usually means in Britain. This is a popular pastime among some members of the higher social classes and a few people from lower social ca=lasses, who often see their participation as a mark of newly won status” [1]

Foxhunting •A group of people on horses, ride around with a pack of dogs. When a dog picks up the sent of a fox, somebody blows a horn and the fox chase starts . The fox sometimes escapes but usually it is torn to pieces by the dogs before the hunters come.•The sport is controversial, (banned in Scotland in 2002, and in England and Wales in November 2004), though shooting foxes as vermin remained legal.Shooting•killing birds with guns (pastime for higher social classes)•can take place during certain periodHare-coursing•The only kind of hunting of working classes•Hunting with greyhound dogs chasing haresFishing•popular among all classes; angling - competitive version

•people feel to be involved in sport at least by placing bet on future results•In 1993 a sum of £12.7 billion was wagered (£ 289 per adult). £9.5 billion was won•about one half of the sum was bet on horses or greyhounds•74% of adult population gambled at least once a year•there was one betting shop for 3,000 adults
