open windows or doors Avoid exposing the scale to extreme vibrations

during weighing Protect the scale from aggressive

chemical vapors Do not expose the scale to extreme moisture

over long periodsConditioning the Scale:Moisture in the air can condense on the surfaces ofa cold scale whenever it is brought into asubstantially warmer place. If you transfer the scaleto a warmer area, make sure to condition it forabout 2 hours at room temperature, leaving itunplugged from AC power. Afterwards, keep thescale continuously connected to AC power.

Seal on Scales Verified for Use in Legal Metrologyin the EU*:

EU legislation requires that a control seal beaffixed to the verified scale. The control sealconsists of a sticker with the Sartorius logo. Thisseal will be irreparably damaged if you attemptto remove it. If the seal is broken, the validity

of the verification will become void, and you musthave your scale re-verified.

    Calibration/Adjustment

    Purpose

Calibration is the determination of the differencebetween the weight readout and the trueweight (mass) of a sample. Calibration does notentail making any changes within the scale.Adjustment is the correction of this difference betweenthe measured value displayed and the true weight(mass) of the sample, or the reduction of the differenceto an allowable level within the maximum permissibleerror limits.

    Features

External adjustment can only be performed when there is no load on the scale, the scale is set to zero, and the internal signal is stable.

If these conditions are not met, an error messageis displayed.

The weight on the scale must not differ from thenominal weight by more than 2%.You can use g, kg or lb as the weight unit forcalibration (1 4)You can block calibration of the scale (1 5)

Calibration/Adjustment for Verified Scales The calibration function is blocked in verified

    Synchronization

During data communication between the scale andan on-line device (computer), messages consisting ofASCII characters are transmitted viathe interface. For error-free data communication, the parameters for baud rate, parity, handshakemode and character format must be the samefor both units.

You can set these parameters in the Setup menu so

that they match those of the on-line device. You canalso define parameters in the scale to makedata output dependent on various conditions. Theconditions that can be configured are describedunder each of the application program descriptions.

If you do not plug a peripheral device into the scaleinterface port, this will not generate an errormessage.

    Handshake

The scale interface (Sartorius Scale Interface = SBI)has transmit and receive buffers. You can define thehandshake parameter in the Setup menu:

Hardware handshake (CTS/DTR) Software handshake (XON, XOFF)

    Hardware Handshake

With a 4-wire interface, 1 more character can betransmitted after CTS (Clear to Send).

    Software Handshake

The software handshake is controlled via XONand XOFF. When a device is switched on,XON must be transmitted to enable any connecteddevice to communicate.

    Activating Data Output

You can define the data output parameter so thatoutput is activated either when a print command isreceived or automatically and synchronous with thescale display or at defined intervals (see applicationprogram descriptions (EB models only) and auto-printsetting).

Data Output by Print CommandThe print command can be transmitted by pressingp/[PRINT] or by a software command (Esc P).

    Automatic Data Output

In the auto print operating mode, data are outputto the interface port without a print command.

You can choose to have data output automatically atdefined print intervals with or without the stabilityparameter. Whichever parameter you select, thedata will be output as the readouts appear onthe scale display. The display update frequencydepends on the setting for Adapting the Filter(1.1.x.).

If you select the auto print setting, data will be

transmitted immediately the moment you turn onthe scale.
