Bin Laden's voice was detected regularly until [14 December 2001] by intelligence operatives
monitoring radio transmissions in Tora Bora, according to the Pentagon [details]. Since then, nothing has been heard from the al-Qa'eda leader and President Bush has hinted in private that
bin Laden's silence could mean he has been killed. [Telegraph, 12/28/2001]
Osama bin Laden:A dead nemesis perpetuated by the US government
Osama bin Laden is dead. The news first came from sources
in Afghanistan and Pakistan almost six months ago: the
fugitive died in December [2001] and was buried in the
mountains of southeast Afghanistan. Pakistan's president,Pervez Musharraf, echoed the information. The remnants of
Osama's gang, however, have mostly stayed silent, either to
keep Osama's ghost alive or because they have no means of
communication.
With an ego the size of Mount Everest, Osama bin Laden would not have, could not have,
remained silent for so long if he were still alive. He always liked to take credit even for things
he had nothing to do with. Would he remain silent for nine months and not trumpet his own
survival? [New York Times. July 11, 2002]
Bin Laden has often been reported to be in poor health. Some accounts claim that he is
suffering from Hepatitis C, and can expect to live for only two more years. According to Le
Figaro, last year [2000] he ordered a mobile dialysis machine to be delivered to his base atKandahar in Afghanistan. [Guardian]
Peter Bergen: Bin Laden has aged 'enormously'
This is a man who was clearly not well. I mean, as you see from these pictures here, he's
really, by December [2001] he's looking pretty terrible.
Bin Laden December 27, 2001 video Healthy bin Laden
But by December, of course, that tape that was aired then, he's barely moving the left
side of his body. So he's clearly got diabetes. He has low blood pressure. He's got a
wound in his foot. He's apparently got dialysis ... for kidney problems. [CNN]
The [December 27, 2001 video] was dismissed by the Bush administration ... as sick
propaganda possibly designed to mask the fact the al-Qa'eda leader was already dead.
"He could have made the video and then ordered that it be released in the event of hisdeath," said one White House aide. [Telegraph]
Pakistan's Musharraf: Bin Laden probably dead
Pakistan's president says he thinks Osama bin Laden is most likely dead because the suspected
terrorist has been unable to get treatment for his kidney disease.
[A Bush administration official] said U.S. intelligence is that bin Laden needs dialysis every
three days and "it is fairly obvious that that could be an issue when you are running from place
to place, and facing the idea of needing to generate electricity in a mountain hideout." [CNN]

Renal dialysis -- talking about hemodialysis -- is something that really is reserved for
patients in end-stage renal failure. That means their kidneys have just completely shut
down. The most common cause of something like that would be something like diabetes
and hypertension. Once that's happened, if you're separated from your dialysis machine --
and incidentally, dialysis machines require electricity, they're going to require clean water,
they're going to require a sterile setting -- infection is a huge risk with that. If you don't
have all those things and a functioning dialysis machine, it's unlikely that you'd survive
beyond several days or a week at the most. [CNN]

Usama bin Laden has died a peaceful death due to an untreated lung complication, the
Pakistan Observer reported, citing a Taliban leader who allegedly attended the funeral of
the Al Qaeda leader. "The Coalition troops are engaged in a mad search operation but they

source said. [FOX News]

CIA agent alleged to have metBin Laden in July
French report claims terrorist leader stayed in Dubaihospital
Anthony SampsonThursday November 1, 2001The Guardian
Two months before September 11 Osama bin Laden flewto Dubai for 10 days for treatment at the American
hospital, where he was visited by the local CIA agent, according to the French newspaper Le Figaro.
The disclosures are known to come from Frenchintelligence which is keen to reveal the ambiguous role ofthe CIA, and to restrain Washington from extending thewar to Iraq and elsewhere.
Bin Laden is reported to have arrived in Dubai on July 4from Quetta in Pakistan with his own personal doctor, nurse and four bodyguards, to be treated in the urologydepartment. While there he was visited by severalmembers of his family and Saudi personalities, and theCIA.
Article continues
The CIA chief was seen in the lift, on his way to see BinLaden, and later, it is alleged, boasted to friends about hiscontact. He was recalled to Washington soon afterwards.
Intelligence sources say that another CIA agent was alsopresent; and that Bin Laden was also visited by PrinceTurki al Faisal, then head of Saudi intelligence, who hadlong had links with the Taliban, and Bin Laden. Soonafterwards Turki resigned, and more recently he haspublicly attacked him in an open letter: "You are a rottenseed, like the son of Noah".
The American hospital in Dubai emphatically denied thatBin Laden was a patient there.
Washington last night also denied the story.
Private planes owned by rich princes in the Gulf flyfrequently between Quetta and the Emirates, often onluxurious "hunting trips" in territories sympathetic to BinLaden. Other sources confirm that these hunting trips haveprovided opportunities for Saudi contacts with the Talibanand terrorists, since they first began in 1994.

Whether the allegations about the Dubai meeting areconfirmed or not, the wider leaks from the French secretservice throw a worrying light on the rivalries and lack ofcoordination between intelligence agencies, both within theUS and between western allies.
A familiar complaint of French intelligence is thatcollaboration with the Americans has been essentiallyone-way, with them happy to receive information whilegiving little in return.

Peter Bergen: Bin Laden has aged
'enormously'February 1, 2002 Posted: 1:24 PM EST (1824 GMT)
(CNN) --On Thursday night, CNN
aired parts of an interview with
Osama bin Laden that the
Arabic-language television network
Al-Jazeera recorded in late October.
Al-Jazeera said it didn't air the tape
because it wasn't newsworthy, and
announced Thursday it was severing its
relationship with CNN, claiming the
interview was stolen and aired illegally.
CNN disputes that.
CNN's Paula Zahn discussed the tape
Friday with CNN terrorism analyst Peter
Bergen, who has been studying bin
Laden and his operation for several
years.
CNN: Before we talk about the substance of this tape, let's once again talk about
Al-Jazeera. At first, Al-Jazeera .... denied that it even existed. Then they came
out and said they never aired it because it wasn't newsworthy. Well, you've seen
this tape. Is maybe a more rational explanation that they didn't want to air this
because it was so indicting?
BERGEN: You know, I'm frankly very puzzled. This was the only television
interview that bin Laden ever gave and, frankly, if he was reading out of the
telephone book it would be newsworthy. And the fact is that there is quite a lot
of -- it is very indicting. I mean, on a couple of occasions, he basically seems to
take responsibility for the events of 9-11. He sort of ducks the question of
anthrax. But this is all very interesting.
So frankly I'm just perplexed why they chose not to air it. I mean I'm not privy
to all the facts of the case, but it's a very puzzling episode.
CNN: The U.S. government also obtained this independently. So what was the
incentive in holding this back from the American public?
BERGEN: Well, Paula, I mean, again, I'm just really, really perplexed.
Al-Jazeera bills its reputation as being a sort of independent broadcaster in the
Middle East, different from some of the other broadcasters that are basically
government entities. Perhaps they came under some pressure from their own
government, the government of Qatar, not to broadcast this.
But I think there's some facts that we don't know yet which will elucidate this
funny and rather strange episode.
CNN: Many Islamic analysts have suggested that Osama bin Laden has always
distorted the Muslim faith. What do you make of his continued (statements that)
it's permissible under Islamic law for innocents to kill other innocents?
BERGEN: Well, it's just ludicrous. I'm not an Islamic scholar. But I mean
there's nothing -- and the Koran is very, very explicit about -- even if you accept
the dubious premise that somehow this holy war was justified -- civilians are
off-limits in any kind of war as far as the Koran and as far as Islamic traditions
are concerned. This is a very unusual interpretation. It cannot be justified in
Islam.
CNN: The last interview you did with bin Laden was back in 1997. How
different was the Osama bin Laden we saw in this tape, the interview taped latein October of 2001?
BERGEN: He's actually quite similar. I mean, in terms of his demeanor and his
voice -- these kinds of things are quite similar. The big difference is that he's
aged enormously between '97 and October of last year.
This is a man who was clearly not well. I mean, as you see from these pictures
here, he's really, by December he's looking pretty terrible. But by December, of
course, that tape that was aired then, he's barely moving the left side of his
body. So he's clearly got diabetes. He has low blood pressure. He's got a wound
in his foot. He's apparently got dialysis ... for kidney problems.
I mean, this is a man who has a number of health problems, apart from the fact
that anybody running around the Afghan mountains is not going to be in great
shape.

CNN: And, of course, the question that people continue to debate is not only is
he not well, is he still alive today? Peter Bergen, thank you very much for
coming along to share your insights with us this morning.

Magazine runs what it calls bin Laden'swillSaturday, October 26, 2002 Posted: 2:14 PM EDT (1814 GMT)
LONDON, England (CNN) --Theeditor-in-chief of a London-based
Arab news magazine said apurported will it publishedSaturday was written late last yearby Osama bin Laden, and shows"he's dying or he's going to diesoon."
U.S. intelligence officials say they have thepurported will, but are not able to say if it isgenuine. CNN has not been able to verifythat the document is bin Laden's will.
"He did write the will as someone sayinggood-bye," Hani Nakshabandi of the Arabnews magazine Al Majalla told CNN.
He said one of the magazine's reportersobtained the four-page document, said tobe signed by the leader of the al Qaeda
terrorist network and dated December 14,2001, in Afghanistan.
In the document, which was translated forCNN, the writer expresses disappointmentwith the Taliban, who harbored him inAfghanistan, speaks of betrayal, and urgeshis children to shun al Qaeda.
"Even amongst the students of religion, only few stood their ground and fought, and the rest either surrendered or fled," thedocument says, referring to the Taliban, according to a translation for CNN.
Despite the setbacks, the purported willsays, "We will be victorious against the U.S. and the infidel West even if it takes tensof years."
"My last advice is to the mujahedeen everywhere," the document says. "Take a
breather and put aside for the time being, fighting the Jews and the Crusades, andinstead devote your efforts to purifying your groups from the agents and the cowardsand those impostors who claim to be scholars amongst you."
"As for you, my sons, forgive me if I failed to devote more of my time to you since Ianswered the call to Jihad," the document says.
It continues: "I have carried the burden of Muslims and their causes, and have chosena dangerous path and endured hardship, disappointment and betrayal. If it wasn't forbetrayal, things would be different today."
The writer advises his sons, "This is the most precious advice I can give you. I alsowant you to stay away from al Qaeda," asking them "not to follow in his path and seekleadership."
Because of the message to his children, Nakshabandi said he believes there will bedramatic upheaval in al Qaeda leadership, and his magazine plans another article inthe next week or so based on correspondence among the group's leaders.
To his wives, the author of the document says, "May God reward you generously. Youhave been very supportive to me. You recognized right at the start that the path will bepaved with land mines and other obstacles."
"Don't consider marrying again, and devote yourselves to your children and guide themto the right path."
The purported will, signed "Your brother Abu Abdullah Osama Muhammad Bin Laden,"could not be independently authenticated.
According to the magazine, their experts say there have been no confirmed sightingsof bin Laden since last December.
The document was dated after the September 11 terror attacks against the UnitedStates and about one week before Taliban rule officially ended in Afghanistan with theswearing-in of an interim government.
In the document, the writer says the attacks on New York and Washington were thethird in a series of al Qaeda attacks that also included the 1983 attack on a U.S.Marines barracks in Lebanon and the 1998 bombings of two U.S. embassies in Africa.
Also in December, the U.S.-led coalition was bombing suspected al Qaeda trainingcamps in mountainous eastern Afghanistan and searching for bin Laden and topTaliban leaders believed to be hiding in the region.
Nakshabandi said he heard about the purported will in March, and obtained a copy aweek ago from one of his reporters posted near Kandahar, in southern Afghanistan, but declined to be more specific. The magazine waited to publish it until they couldconfirm its authenticity, he added.
"I have confirmation it is the right one," he said, citing his own sources.
While admitting he doesn't know for sure if bin Laden is dead, Nakshabandi said,"Once someone writes his will, it means either he's dying or he's going to die soon."
Al Majalla is published by Saudi Research and Publishing Co., and has about 93,000readers.

Pretty much any piece of video that has ever been recorded is becoming clip art that producers
can digitally sculpt into the story they want to tell, according to Eric Haseltine, senior vice
president for R&D at Walt Disney Imagineering in Glendale, Calif. With additional video
manipulation technologies, previously recorded actors can be made to say and do things they
have never actually done or said. "You can have dead actors star again in entirely new movies,"

Bin Laden Video TapeProphetic words, 17 December, 2003: Madeleine Albright: Bush Planning Bin Laden October Surprise
October 30, 2004: Bin Laden video threatens America
Close (closer than the last phony)
but no cigar. Note the shape of the
cheeks and the width of the nose.
His arms and hands are in view
and appear uninjured, whereas it
was reported that the real Osama'sleft arm was severely injured at
Tora Bora.
Real Osamas
The genuine bin Laden's last video appearance was late in 2001:
"The big difference is that he's aged enormously between '97 and October of last year
[2001]. ... So he's clearly got diabetes. He has low blood pressure. He's got a wound in his
foot. He's apparently got dialysis ... for kidney problems." [CNN 2/1/2002]
Bin Laden's beard was much whiter than on Nov 3, the last time al-Jazeera broadcast a
video of him, and he appeared much older than his 44 years. Lack of sunlight and a poor
diet seemed to have taken a toll on him. [Telegraph 12/28/2001]
Bin Laden "aged enormously" between 1997 & 2001 due to kidney problems, lack of sunlight
and a poor diet, but between 2001 & 2004 he "unaged". Truly amazing.
President Bush said of the 2004 tape...
"Let me make this very clear. Americans will not be intimidated or influenced by an enemy
of our country. I'm sure Senator Kerry agrees with this." The American people were at war
and would prevail, he said. [BBC News]
...this is somewhat different to the Bush administration's response to the genuine bin Laden
video released in 2001:
The recording was dismissed by the Bush administration yesterday as sick propaganda

possibly designed to mask the fact the al-Qa'eda leader was already dead. "He could have
made the video and then ordered that it be released in the event of his death," said one
White House aide. [Telegraph]
The 2004 video certainly helped Bush's election poll numbers:
President Bush has opened a six-point lead over John Kerry in the first opinion poll to
include sampling taken after the new Osama bin Laden videotape was broadcast on Friday
night. [Telegraph 10/31/04]
Even Walter Cronkite found the video incredibly convenient for the Bush administration.
Consider this: if this was the real Osama, didn't his appearance prove that Bush has wasted two
hundred billion dollars and a thousand American lives (plus 100,000 Iraqi lives) without
making us any safer from Osama? If the 2004 tape were genuine, wouldn't it prove that Bush is
a total failure in his own "war on terror"?
