In November, Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) posted another solid month of growth across the board in all three traffic categories, including new daily and monthly records for cargo tonnage. Compared to the same month last year, we saw increases in passenger volume, cargo tonnage and flight movements of 6.8%, 6.6% and 6.5% respectively. With the festive season upon us, we foresee this positive trend to continue for this month.

2013 was a year of development to keep in stride with the fast pace of growth. The new headquarters of the Civil Aviation Department

commenced operation this year equipped with the new traffic control system that can cater to the increasing traffic demand up to 2030 and beyond. On the airport itself, we have added another 20 aircraft parking stands and the construction of the Midfield is on schedule. On the air cargo front, the Cathay Pacific Cargo Terminal began operation this year, increasing the cargo handling capacity of HKIA to 7.4 million tonnes a year.

2013 was also a fruitful year as our efforts in different facets of the airport operations had received international recognition. In March, we were the first and only airport in Asia-Pacific to attain the “Optimisation” level in Airports Council International’s Airport Carbon Accreditation, which was a milestone underpinning our pledge to be the world’s greenest airport. More recently, we were inducted into TTG Travel Hall of Fame, after being named the world’s best airport for 10 consecutive times since 2002.

Heading to 2014 and beyond, demand for air services will only continue to increase at HKIA. Summer 2014 schedules at HKIA filed by airlines indicate that daily flight movements will reach about 1,050 a day, which is not too far off from the daily practical maximum capacity. The three-runway system project is clearly needed as soon as practical to further the competitiveness and development of Hong Kong and strengthen the city’s hard earned status as a regional and international aviation centre. I am pleased to report that the three-runway system project is making good progress and we aim to submit its Environmental Impact Assessment report in early 2014 as planned.

Meanwhile, we will also proceed to develop the North Commercial District at the northeast of the airport island. The first phase of the commercial development will include building a hotel adjacent to AsiaWorld-Expo and a two-level car park underneath the area with 1,000 parking spaces. The development will help to meet the growing demand for hotel accommodation, and capture the ample business opportunities associated with the opening of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge.

2014 will be full of opportunities and I believe the whole airport community stands ready to usher in a new era for Hong Kong’s aviation industry.

Lastly, let me take this opportunity to wish everyone a festive season of joy as we turn the page towards a happy, healthy and prosperous new year.

Runners slipped on their trainers and gathered at the East Coast Road at Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) on 8 December to participate in the 2013 HKIA Feet of Fire 10km Run. With a strong commitment towards promoting a healthy work-life balance, the Airport Authority (AA) once again showed its full support for the event by serving as its title sponsor for the fourth consecutive year since 2010.

Co-organised by The Hong Kong Federation of Trade Unions Youth Affairs Committee and The Staffs and Workers Union of Hong Kong Civil Airlines, the annual display of endurance saw a new record-setting field of some 1,600 runners, including a team of 40 from the AA, making their way to the starting line in this year’s edition.

AA Executive Director, Airport Operations C K Ng officiated at the event, joining Chairman of The Staffs and Workers Union of Hong Kong Civil Airlines Cheung Shu-wang, Hong Kong Federation of Trade Unions President Lam Shuk-yee, and Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Hong Kong SAR Deputy Director-General of Department of Social Affairs Li Yun-fu to kick-start the competition.

The action-filled race saw the runners take on a challenging course beginning from the SkyCity Car Park and extending along the East Coast Road on the airport island. Runners had to complete two laps of the course in the 10km run, or had the option of running one lap for the shorter 5km run to test their stamina.

In a day filled with winners on and off the course, the AA athletes excelled in the race and shined the brightest by capturing the title of champion and second runner-up in the men’s and women’s categories of the Airport Staff Cup respectively. They not only took home the awards, but also attained a great sense of satisfaction with their exceptional performance in the race.

SUPREME SERVICE

The airport’s renowned welcoming environment continues to resonate across industries, as the Airport Authority (AA) was recently bestowed with the “Supreme Service Awards 2013” organised by financial magazines Capital CEO and Capital Entrepreneur. The award winners were voted by an expert panel of judges in recognition of brands and companies that have provided superior service to the public through their dedication to enhancing customer relations.

In accepting the accolade during the award ceremony on 24 October, AA Assistant General Manager, Customer Services Rebecca Ho paid tribute to the airport. “We are proud to receive the award on behalf of the whole airport community who has made all the efforts to ensure a smooth, efficient and speedy customer experience for every passenger’s inbound and outbound journeys,” Ho said.

TRAVELLERS’ CHOICE

Everyone at the airport community works hard to ensure that each passenger’s journey to Hong Kong is a pleasant one. Recently, our efforts were again recognised by being voted the “Best Airport in China” in the 2013 Business Traveller China Awards. This marks the seventh time in the past eight years we have clinched the accolade, a testament to Hong Kong International Airport’s (HKIA) reputation as the favourite travel and hospitality service provider in the poll organised by leading travel magazine Business Traveller China.

Meanwhile, HKIA’s outstanding facilities placed the airport among the top in the world in the eyes of US news blog The Huffington Post and tourism website The Guide to Sleeping in Airports. The Huffington Post particularly lauded the IMAX Theatre and the Aviation Discovery Centre as “awesome amenities that will help keep passengers occupied in transit”, while The Guide to Sleeping in Airports praised HKIA’s comfortable seating and entertainment facilities that keep travellers amused during long layovers.

The Guide to Sleeping in Airports的眼中,是全球名列前茅的機場。

In late October, AA CEO Stanley Hui and representatives of the AA paid a visit to the Shenzhen Fuyong Port and Dongguan Humen Port to gain a better understanding of the facilities’ operations. The two ports are among those connected by the ferry services of SkyPier at HKIA. During the visit, Hui and the delegation discussed with the top management of the ports and ferry operators further areas for cooperation.

On top of the tour, the group also took the opportunity to get a glimpse of the new Terminal 3 at neighbouring Shenzhen Bao’an International Airport which commenced operations on 28 November. The visit was mutually beneficial and facilitated an exchange of experience between the two airports.

Customer services always top the agenda of HKIA with both frontline and supporting staff work promptly and diligently to meet customers’ expectation. Recently, AA Manager, Terminal Operation and Government Facilitation Tony Yu and Senior Operations Officer, Passenger Services Stephanie Leung were honoured with the Ombudsman’s Awards for Officers of Public Organisations. The distinction marks the third consecutive year that AA staff have been recognised for their customer service excellence.

As a team leader, Yu has always encouraged his team to go the extra mile when handling customers’ complaints, which would help turn them into compliments. Their exemplary approach was showcased when Yu and his team assisted a customer’s mother who was embarking on a flight transfer via HKIA on her own. However, the mother was anxious since she previously had an unpleasant experience. To ensure a smooth flight transfer and peace of mind for the mother, Yu made special arrangements with airlines and service providers. In addition, he went one step further by requesting for her return trip itinerary to ensure similar assistance could be provided on her way back.

On the other hand, in the daily work of the Passenger Services Team, Leung works closely with service providers to ensure quality service is offered to passengers. Upon close monitoring of the contractor’s service performance through on-site audit check and thorough review of customers’ feedback, she works with her teammates to address customers’ needs using all necessary means in a timely manner.

To deliver excellent customer service, Leung always bears in mind her rule of thumb – understanding customers’ needs through good manners and clear communication, as well as putting herself in customer’s shoes. “When we are better positioned to understand our customer’s viewpoint, we can act diligently to provide the highest quality of service to passengers,” Leung explained.

Despite winning the Ombudsman’s Awards, Tony Yu and Stephanie Leung are not resting on their laurels and instead strive to enhance their customer service even further. For Yu, the higher expectation from passengers has posed greater challenges, but also inspired greater motivation to raise the airport’s service standards. “The more complicated the complaint case, the greater my enthusiasm to sort out the problem,” Yu said.

Meanwhile, Leung notes that personal satisfaction and recognition of her efforts have inspired her to raise her efforts to an even higher level. Such dedication by Yu and Leung bodes well for passengers who look forward to an enjoyable airport experience at HKIA.

SOFT OPENING OF NORTH SATELLITE CONCOURSE

HKIA is dedicated to enhancing its service for passengers, and this can be exemplified by the construction of the North Satellite Concourse (NSC) which commenced operations on 17 December 2009. Situated to the north of Terminal 1, the two-storey NSC has a floor area of 20,000 square metres and provides 10 frontal stands suitable for narrow-bodied aircraft to meet the growing number of passengers flying on smaller aircraft. With the new facility, more passengers can enjoy the convenience of embarking and disembarking their aircraft in an indoor, weatherproof environment through air bridges.

As one of the most accomplished airports in the world, HKIA added to its résumé when it attained one of its highest achievements with its induction into TTG Travel’s Hall of Fame. The prestigious accolade was bestowed upon HKIA for winning TTG’s Best Airport award 10 consecutive times, underscoring the airport community’s efforts and dedication in providing an enjoyable passenger experience over the past decade. The TTG Travel Awards is widely considered to be a high distinction among aviation and travel industry practitioners, with the winners voted by tens of thousands of readers of TTG Travel Trade Publishing’s print and online publications every year.

RAMPING UP SAFETY AWARENESS

The airport apron is always bustling with traffic, as aircrafts and ground vehicles frequent the apron roads. To promote driving safety, the Airport Authority (AA) organised a Ramp Driving Safety Award Presentation Ceremony on 30 October to recognise ramp operators who consistently observe safe driving practices. A total of 63 staff from 20 ramp operators received their accolades at the event.

Speaking at the ceremony, AA Executive Director, Airport Operations C K Ng applauded the effort of the award winners in maintaining a safe working environment in the airport. “The awardees are all exemplary role models for occupational safety. We believe that prompt action on hidden dangers is the best way to avoid accidents,” Ng stated.

The event is part of the AA’s Safety 2013 Campaign, which aims to raise the safety awareness of the airport community in order to make HKIA one of the safest airports in the world.

Two new lounges were recently unveiled at HKIA, offering travellers additional places to relax before embarking on their journeys.

Cathay Pacific opened its fifth passenger departure lounge The Bridge in late October, offering its First and Business Class passengers an exclusive space to unwind before their flight. Located near Gate 35, the 2,567-square-metre lounge adopts residential design features to make passengers feel at home. One of the lounge’s signature dining options is The Bakery, which serves freshly baked bread, pizzas and pastries, while at The Long Bar, passengers can sit back, take a sip of their drink and enjoy the fantastic view of the airport.

Meanwhile, a new flagship Plaza Premium Lounge also commenced operations on 3 December. Centrally located in the airport’s West Hall and measuring 1,394 square metres, the 24-hour pay-in lounge features five different zones providing travellers with multiple experiences and choices. For example, one of the zones that discerning diners must not miss is the main dining area The Market Place, which offers a diverse selection of local culinary delicacies including Hong Kong-style fish ball noodles, pineapple buns, egg tarts and steamed rice rolls.

Newly opened Cathay Pacific’s The Bridge and Plaza Premium Lounge offer passengers additional serene areas to unwind at the airport.

HKIA was the scene of a crash simulation exercise during the early hours of 27 November that aimed to enhance the airport community’s cooperation in implementing emergency procedures during large-scale incidents. More than 450 representatives from over 20 Government departments and organisations took part in this annual crash exercise.

During the exercise, an aircraft carrying medical-use radioactive material with 142 passengers and crew on board made a hard landing on HKIA’s runway, causing its fuselage to crack. While the passengers and crew were evacuated, some were contaminated as a result of radiation leakage from the damaged cargo carrying radioactive material. Acting swiftly, all emergency units responded to the scene to render rescue, medical services and other support operations including conducting a radioactive decontamination process.

Every year, HKIA conducts around 100 drills, exercises and training seminars as part of the AA’s commitment to providing safe and secure services and facilities for passengers.

GREEN CABS CHARGED UP AT HKIA

Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) has always sought to protect the environment and maintain blue skies at the airport. A primary way it has done this is by running one of Hong Kong’s largest fleets of electric vehicles in its operation. Since September, the Airport Authority (AA) has extended this environmental commitment by installing two sets of e-charging taxi stations at the taxi staging area on a trial basis as a support to the taxi industry. Using the new facility, a fully charged taxi can travel approximately between 250 to 300 kilometres, equivalent to travelling between HKIA and Central over six times.

CARE FOR YOUNG PLANTS

In support of the “Islands District Healthy City Tree Planting Festival – Green Lantau 2013” organised by the Islands District Council, AA staff members and their families joined the Tree Caring Day on 9 November. In the activity, participants took a relaxing walk at Nei Lak Shan on Lantau Island, during which they were briefed on local ecology and tree conservation, as well as observed the growth of trees and helped clear the grass near the newly planted seedlings.

The event is a follow-up activitiy of the Tree Planting Festival held in mid-April, during which 2,200 native seedlings were planted. The festival aims to enhance the ecological environment and biodiversity of the district, as well as increase participants’ awareness of environmental protection.

A WALK WITH NATURE

Around 30 AA staff spent a delightful Saturday morning communing with nature and showed their full support of WWF’s Walk for Nature held at the Mai Po Nature Reserve on 9 November. The AA has sponsored the green fundraising event since 2009, which aims to shed light on conserving Hong Kong’s environment by increasing public awareness and appreciation of nature.

This year’s event took on a special meaning as it celebrated the 30th anniversary of WWF-Hong Kong’s management of the Mai Po Nature Reserve, home to diverse species of flora and fauna, and particularly known as a paradise for birds. Participants relished the tranquil five-kilometre walk through one of Hong Kong’s most iconic natural environments observing amazing natural habitats including bird hides, fishponds, reed beds and gei wais (shrimp ponds).

LENDING A HAND TO CHARITY

Airport Authority (AA) staff are always enthusiastic about helping those in need through any possible manner. One such example took place on 23 November, when AA staff and their families raised funds for the South Kwai Chung Service Centre by participating in a flag-selling activity. Throughout the morning, the volunteers displayed their charitable spirit and sincere smiles in approaching passers-by around Tung Chung to donate money for the meaningful cause. Through their altruistic efforts, the donations raised went towards the centre’s elderly services, which provides medical and rehabilitation care for seniors living in the district.
