    What is a District of Workforce Shortage?Districts o Work orce Shortage are regional, rural orremote areas and outer metropolitan areas in capitalcities that are experiencing doctor shortages.

    YOU choose where to workGeneral Practitioners Many outer metropolitanareas in the capital cities and most rural and regionalareas are Districts o Work orce Shortage or generalpractitioners. I you decide to work as a general

    practitioner, you will be able to choose to work within any o these areas.

    Specialists I you decide to take up a specialty, thenyou may work anywhere outside the capital cities.I you wish to work in a capital city, you will needto work in that part o the capital city that has ashortage o the specialty you choose.

    How do I apply for aBMP Scheme Place?All Australian citizens or permanent residents areeligible to apply or a BMP Scheme place. To receivea Bonded Medical Place, you frst need to apply tostudy medicine through the normal process.

    Universities manage the application and selectionprocess or the BMP Scheme. I a university o ersyou a bonded medical place, and you accept, thisarrangement will be ormalised in a writtenDeed o Agreement between you and theAustralian Government.

    The admission process di ers at each university, soyou should contact the university o your choicedirectly or more in ormation on the applicationprocess. A list o university contact details isavailable at the BMP web sitewww.health.gov.au/bmpscheme

    BMP Student Support Scheme The support scheme enables BMP students to access

    online medical educational resources, newslettersand mentoring opportunities. It also unds studentsto attend national con erences o key health andmedical associations.

    Options available under the schemeOPTIONS TO REDUCE THE LENGTH OF THE RET URN OF SER VICE

    You can now elect to start completing up tohal o your return o service during yourpre-vocational training, or vocational training.Pre-vocational training completed anywhere

    outside the inner metropolitan areas o RRMA1 can be counted towards the return o service.Vocational training completed in a District o Work orce Shortage or either specialists or GPscan count towards the return o service.

    CAN I APPLY FOR A SCHOLARSHIP ASWELL AS THE BMP SCHEME?

    Yes. Accepting a BMP Scheme place does notexclude you rom applying or scholarships andother fnancial assistance including the HECSReimbursement Scheme. More in ormation on

    some o these scholarships, particularly thoseavailable rom the Australian GovernmentDepartment o Health and Ageing, is available atthe BMP Scheme web sitewww.health.gov.au/bmpscheme

    WHAT IF MY CIRCUMSTANCES CHANGE?

    Generally, you are required to commence work in a District o Work orce Shortage as soon asyou fnish your training. However, you can de erthis i you need to take time to have a amily,undertake postgraduate study overseas, or inother special circumstances.

    IS THERE AN OPTION FORPART-TIME WORK?

    Yes, the BMP Scheme allows part-time work.During the return o service period you arerequired to work a minimum o only 20 hours perweek or at least nine months o each year.

    CAN I CHOOSE WHERE I WORK?

    Yes, as long as you choose an area that is aDistrict o Work orce Shortage or your chosenspecialty.

    CAN I REMAIN IN THE SAME LOCATIONFOR THE DURATION OF MY VOCATIONAL TRAININ G AND MY RE TURN OF SE RVICE?

    Yes, i you apply or, and are granted tenure. Thismeans that i you undertook your vocationaltraining in a District o Work orce Shortage, youcan remain in the same location to completeyour return o service, even i that location laterceases to be a District o Work orce Shortage.
