Thank you to all the parents for their willingness to help our school. Fund raising activities and active participation in your child’s education are hugely appreciated by all our staff. We have valued your input at all times. The end of this school year represents the end of formal ties with Cotswold School for 37 families as their youngest child moves on to intermediate education. A large number of you have been heavily involved in our school environment through the Parents Association, the Board of Trustees, sports coaching, assisting office staff, classroom teachers and programmes. Thank you for your service to our school and to our students – it is both valued and appreciated by us all. You leave a huge hole in the fabric of our school – but you also leave a school that has been able to offer our students so much more because of your involvement. Our school is extremely fortunate in the parents who represent our Parents Association. You’re an incredible group of parents, committed to supporting our school in so many ways. I’ve appreciated your support and commitment this year and I thank you for taking the time to be involved. Thank you also to all parents who have assisted with or contributed to any of the Parents Association Activities.

A huge thank you to the Cotswold School Board of Trustees. Your commitment to the role of governance is very much appreciated by us all. Thank you for making yourselves available and the way in which you support our staff and students. 2017 has had its challenges as we have worked with the Ministry to develop the rebuild and refurbishment of our school. At times this has been very frustrating and governed by rules and regulations that at times seem to aim at limiting the development and opportunities we need to provide for our children. Thank you to Kiri Terry and Jayne Rushworth for the huge meeting workload this has created for you and to Scott Rainey, Shelley Liken, Martin Cudd and Anna Douglas Bray for their ongoing support. Early in 2018 we hope to be able to share with parents and our community what is planned for our rebuild and refurbishment and the timeline for this development.

I am privileged to lead such an amazing team. Thank you to our dedicated staff team. I have appreciated the work you do to provide our children with a rich, extensive curriculum in and beyond the classroom. You provide our children with a range of choices within a framework during learning times and you provide quality feedback to children on their areas of progress and their next steps. As leaders and teachers we are supported well by a quality support staff, admin and property management team. We must not forget their amazing work, making sure we have food, heat, light, security, a clean environment and that additional support is provided to students where needed. They also take the time to talk to everyone which makes all our days seem a little better. Thanks to each and everyone one of you. Special thanks to Paula Fleming-Connell and Andrew Simpson who provide leadership to the junior and senior schools respectively and along with me make up the senior leadership team for Cotswold School. I have appreciated your support and professionalism and the commitment you make to the wellbeing of our staff and students. Thank you also to our Team Leaders who have continued their focus on monitoring student progress and achievement and student welfare within their designated team of teachers. I’d like to thank and acknowledge the work of the team leaders – Cameron Anderson, Susan Arscott, Jean-Marie Cain, David Guthrie, Nicola Campbell-Fox, Kristin Dudley and Anna Douglas.

A recent report to the Board identified that 220 children received additional learning support during 2017. Special thanks to Megan Poultney for the work she does in coordinating Learning Support and Learning Support Programmes across the school. You do an amazing job Megan on behalf of us all. Thank you for this. The end of this school year quite often signals a change in staff. I’d like to thank and wish Susan Arscott all the best for 2018. Susan has been granted leave for 2018 but there is some comfort in knowing that she will still be available to relieve for us on occasions when her schedule allows. Thank you to Claire Rodgers who leaves us at the end of this year. Claire has been an essential part of our Support Staff Team for almost 10 years. This is an incredible commitment. Thank you for everything you have done for us in your time at Cotswold Claire and we wish you and Kevin well as you both step back for full time work in education and get to spend more time with family in their various locations across the world. Thank you also to Hannah Lumsden who leaves us at the end of this year to complete further study and to Brett Smith who is taking up a teaching position in Nelson. Thank you for the contribution you have both made to our school and students during your short time with us Hannah and Brett. We have had two wonderful ambassadors for our school this year in our two head students Luc and Chloe. They have contributed in so many ways through school activities and assemblies. It has been a pleasure to watch you grow and develop in your role. Thank you for the contribution you have made to our school. The challenge for you both now is to take the leadership skills you have developed into your new school setting and develop them further. Warmest congratulations to the Year 6 Class of 2017 who will be presented with Graduation Certificates at our assembly on Thursday 7th December, 2017. Our staff can still remember the young children who started school, some looking somewhat overwhelmed by the whole experience, others confidently striding into the classroom. We are the lucky ones who have had the privilege of helping you all with your social and educational development and growth. We have also watched your parents support you with everything you have done. There are great things coming, and just as your parents and our staff are proud, each one of you should feel proud of yourself. Wherever your future leads you, I will be watching and cheering for you. Thank you all for your support. I wish everyone a happy and restful Christmas and look forward to working with students and parents returning to Cotswold in 2018.

Kind Regards Ngā mihi Nui STEPHEN HARRISON Principal
