HOW TO REGISTERPlease look through this catalog and read the course descriptions and related details carefully. Online registration begins on Monday, July 8 at 7:00 a.m. You will receive an email on Monday, July 8 with the registration link.

BILLINGAll classes will be paid for when registering online, with the exception of the private music lessons. If you are registering your child for a private music lesson, please see description details for payment and registration arrangements.

CREDIT CARDSCAIS accepts Visa and Master Card with the online payment system.

CLASS AVAILABILITYRegistration will be assigned based upon the online registration time.Please register as soon as possible. Many classes have a required mini-mum amount of students for a class to be held. Please be aware that many of our popular classes fill up quickly.

CLASS CONFIRMATIONS AND CANCELLATIONSIf you are able to register for a class, your registration is confirmed. If you are placed on the waitlist, you will be notified with an automated email message.

REFUNDSThere will be no refunds or changes once classes begin. For example, if your child’s first class meets on Monday, Sep-tember 9, you may request a refund by Sunday, September 8. To withdraw your child from the class, please contact the Auxiliary Program office via email [email protected] with your child’s name and the enrichment class name. The Auxiliary Program office will work directly with the Business Office to refund your class fee.

EXTENDED DAY AND LATE CHARGESStudents taking enrichment classes will not incur extended day charges for the time prior to the class. However, stu-dents who remain in extended day five minutes after the class has concluded will be charged $15 for the remainder of extended day.

REGISTRATIONAFTER SCHOOL PROCEDURES

AFTER SCHOOL PROCEDURESAll students in first through eighth grade who are registered for an enrichment class will be brought to their assigned study hall room after school by their classroom teacher. Kindergarten students registered for an enrichment class will be brought to room 180 after school by their classroom teachers. This is where students will study and work on homework or projects until their enrichment class starts.

The instructor for each enrichment class will pick up and bring students to the enrichment class location. At the conclusion of each class, the instructor will return all first through eighth grade students to MPR 2, and all kindergarten students will be brought to room 180.

CAIS Music EnsemblesNow in its 17th year, the CAIS Music Ensemble program provides students with the opportunity to develop ensemble playing skills by learning a repertoire of pieces using wood and metal barred instruments, recorders and a variety of world percus-sion. Music Ensemble students prepare performance pieces for school events such as assemblies, the winter program and Chinese New Year Mass Greeting. They also may perform at public events. As these are repertory groups, continuing students have priority registration in all Music Ensemble sections, and sections may be full. APA5. CHINESE CHORUS Learn Chinese language and culture through singing, a fun and effec-tive way to learn and reinforce a language. In the chorus class, students will build on the choral foundation taught in the younger grades and learn more complicated songs and harmonies. Additionally, students will learn the stories and history behind the lyrics of the songs they will learn and sing. APA10. HAWAIIAN DANCE CLASS (HULA AND MORE)Our highly sought after Hawaiian dance class is back! After spending time in the Pacific Islands, Mr. Munoz is back in the States. This class is an introduction to Hawaiian dance and other forms of Polynesian dance (Samoan, Marquesian and Maori). Students will also begin to employ pieces in their dancing which will help them exercise their coordination

as well as their fine and gross motor skills. A respect for the arts, culture, crafts, languages and heritage of Polynesia and Polynesian dance will be fostered and encouraged. Students will learn at least two pieces of choreography within three styles of the genre; kahiko (ancient), ‘auana (modern) and hapa ha’ole (English language). Students will also learn the basics of costuming and attire.

APA12. CAIS ROCKBAND CLASS This class will provide instruction on how to play the guitar, bass, drums and vocals in a band environment. The classes will focus on playing in a group environment, learning songs, working on writing original songs, music appreciation and learning to improvise on your instrument. This class will also focus on pre-production and could possibly lead to a field trip to a real recording studio where the students will get a chance to record their original recording. This class is for students third through eighth grades. Amps, drums and a PA will be provided, but children are encouraged to bring their own instruments to the class. After you sign up for the class please email the Auxiliary Program office [email protected] indicating what instrument(s) your child plays or wants to learn. Remember, this is a class that will be using electric instruments, so bring your Fender Stratocaster or Fender P-Bass, plug in—let’s make some noise! ACA1. CERAMICSCome learn to play with clay! The class will cover pinching, rolling, pulling and cutting clay to create imaginative and functional pieces. Projects include hand-built animals, houses, masks and holiday themed activities. Students can learn to build vases, cups, platters or bowls. After we’ve finished building, students will discover how to glaze and decorate their pots.

Our classes are designed not only to be fun, but to let you in on some of the most popular jewelry making tech-niques, such as wire work, beading, felting, finger knitting and stamping and dapping. We use only the highest quality findings, fresh water pearls and Czech glass beads to create one piece of new jewelry per class. After School ArtsCome to a class filled with magic and wonder. Students are encouraged to think with their imagination and creativity. Students are encouraged to think and see new ways of looking at and experiencing art. Students will shape their favorite animal or flower out of metal wire, then wrap color tissue paper and white glue on the frame to create unique and whim-sical sculptures to take home. Students will work with watercolor to create and reproduce landscapes, fish and flowers. Students will also work with oil or chalk pastel to draw a variety of still life items.

ACA6. CHINESE BRUSH PAINTING AND CALLIGRAPHYStudents will learn about the history and the hands on technique of tradi-tional Chinese brush painting and calligraphy. Students will also learn about Chinese poems and the many special Chinese characters associated while learning the art of brush painting, calligraphy, history and new Chinese vo-cabulary. ACA7. ORIGAMI CLASS AND CHINESE HANDCRAFTSOrigami is a traditional Japanese art of paper folding. Discover this fascinating and absorbing craft and learn how to fold decorative, amusing and practical items all from the simplest of material, a sheet of paper. Playing and learning origami helps students relax and improve concentration. Students will learn to use various sizes of origami paper in order to make different items into objects. Sample of projects include houses, tables, chairs, beds, clothes, pants, rabbits, cats, dogs, pigs, frogs, plates, cups, bowls and different ways to fold hearts. Class is conducted in Chinese.

MATHCountsThe MATHCounts enrichment class is celebrating its 17th year at CAIS under the direction of CAIS’s seventh/eighth grade math teacher, Rita Soukhova. Addi-tionally our MS Dean of Student Life and former sixth grade math and science teacher, Mark Churchill and current sixth grade math and science teacher Kristina Hereford will teach sections of MATHCounts classes.

MATHCounts is a middle school math program focusing on learning advanced math. The program culminates in a citywide contest. Students work on number theory, algebra, probability and statistics, three-dimensional geometry, solid geometry, and transformational geometry, among other subjects. Students also develop their test-taking skills and techniques.

AMS4. BEGINNING-INTERMEDIATE CHESSThis program offers chess instruction to students of beginning to intermediate skill levels. In addition to teaching moves, rules, check and checkmate, the teacher will offer step-by-step instructions on opening, middle game and end game techniques, as well as advanced strategies and tournament preparation. Meghan is a regular performer and has sung locally with Pocket Opera, SF Cabaret Opera Theater and the San Ramon Arts Foundation.

F) PIANO WITH TEACHER JANNYTeacher Janny teaches entry level students with a fun, innovative, playing-based piano program that allows students to play great-sounding pieces immediately, from their first lesson! Students learn to play the piano in a fun and easy way, while building an extraordinary repertoire that includes contemporary, classical, blues, jazz and accompaniment pieces, without being slowed down by note-reading. Instead, students learn to experience their musicianship as a natural self expression, with improvisations introduced at an early stage. Note-reading will be introduced after students complete level two of the program. In addition to mastering a vast repertoire covering a broad array of musical styles and genres, students will also gain a highly positive and self-affirming experience throughout the music learning process.
