Page 10: Casebook Omnicomm ENG new logo

With tough intensifying competition in the market of agricultural machinery the company was searching for more competitive strengths which could advance its production and make it more efficient and convenient in use for clients.

Thus, recently Lamborghini management has drawn its attention to technological solutions of Omnicomm, internation hi-tech industrial company, one of the leading developers and manucfacturers of fuel monitoring and fleet management solutions. Omnicomm fuel monitoring system raised interest of Lamborghini

top management. After a series of quick negotiations the Italian concern made a decision to start a long-term joint project.

As part of cooperation 150-200 tractors manufactured by Trattori Lamborghini plant in Bulgaria will be annually equipped with Omnicomm fuel level sensors.

Omnicomm equipment has become a strong competitive advantage for Lamborghini.

It is known that fuel expenses comprise a significant part of agricultural products

prime cost. Upon those long distances, refueling of equipment in the field, as well as the low level of wages in the agricultural sector, require use of special equipment counteracting fuel drain and misuse of technology, which, unfortunately, are widespread worldwide.

Representatives of Trattori Lamborghini acknowledge that Omnicomm fuel level sensors allow their customers to control the petroleum flow better, i.e. prevent fuel drain and fleet misuse providing visible results.

KAMAZ-MASTER TEAMKAMAZ-master is a team of prominent racers, championed World Cup for 3 times in off-road truck rallies. The racer team won the Silk Way rally several times and is a thirteen-fold winner of the Dakar transcontinental super marathon, which is known as the rally with the highest difficulty category.

Omnicomm fleet management and  fuel monitoring system was selected by the team for use in a series of rally-raids and is installed now on all KAMAZ-master racing trucks.

While preparing for the race it is highly important to accurately calculate the required amount of fuel in the tank. During the race it is no less important to monitor fuel consumption to

know its exact amount in the tank. Every liter of fuel adds weight to the truck, so it makes no sense to take fuel “in reserve”.

REAL LIFE CASEIn KAMAZ-master’s long-term practice of participation in rally-raids there were cases when the race organizers were late in informing the race participants about changes in road surface. In Dakar 2005 with a total route of 600 km the crew ran out of fuel within just 50 km of the finish line. Original fuel calculations were made for hard route surface, but the organizers changed the route and selected soft shifting sand due to the heat. As a result the team was only finished 18th.

In addition to  fuel control Omnicomm fleet management system allows the team to  track the  route and  characteristics of  trucks running during practice races, remotely monitor truck location and  technical condition of  vehicles, which is especially important during test-drives while  preparing to  the  most extreme international races - “Dakar”, “Silk Way” and “Gold of Kagan”.

OMNICOMM SPECIAL SOLUTIONS FOR KAMAZ-MASTEREspecially for the KAMAZ-master team Omnicomm has developed a new, advanced multi-function LLD display, installed in the truck cabin. LLD display allows the crew to receive real-time information about amount of fuel remained, control

consumption and monitor the amount of fuel left until refueling. Every extra liter in the tank overloads the truck, and it’s of great importance to calculate fuel consumption for the whole route taking into account all modes of engine operation and different coatings during all the rally.

“We have chosen Omnicomm as a technological partner of our team. Omnicomm solutions are able to operate smoothly throughout the entire rally extreme route, in high vibration and high temperature conditions being fully aware of fuel on board. Reliable. Accurate. Flawless. Omnicomm fuel level sensors are our warning signal. Now the navigator is aware of exact fuel consumption at any stage of the way, how much fuel is left in the tank and how many miles the truck would pass with remaining fuel. This information allows to calculate the necessary amount of fuel very accurately for different sections of the route and not to carry extra liters of excess weight what is very important for a racing car under competitions conditions”.

1 2 3THE FIRST STAGEThe first test installation of Omnicomm fuel monitoring equipment was carried out in 2012 in the hot summer conditions of the tough road rally “Gold of Kagan”. The decision to test Omnicomm equipment was made by the team of one support vehicle which participated in that race. Strong shaking of fuel in the tank and extreme track conditions did not affect the accuracy of readings. That made it possible for the team to constantly monitor the exact amount of fuel in the tank.

THE SECOND STAGEThe second test for Omnicomm equipment was held during the famous Dakar rally in January 2013, when the racing team decided to equip one more vehicle with the same set of equipment which had been successfully tested in 2012. Omnicomm technology functioned faultlessly. The whole system and its parts proved once again high accuracy and reliability, confirming itself as perfect technological solution for quality performance in harsh conditions. The race handed a victory to the team.

THE THIRD STAGEDuring the third stage of testing Omnicomm fuel control system was installed in the majority of racing trucks. The system was tested once again during training in  Morocco in May 2013. All the results were at the same high level, and that confirmed the decision to equip all the racing vehicles.

Just before the rally-raid Silk Way-2013 after all tests were carried out successfully KAMAZ-master team fully equipped the whole fleet of  racing and  supporting trucks with Omnicomm fuel level sensors,   transport location and technical condition monitoring solution.

After the fault in The Dakar’ 2005 KAMAZ-master engineers thoroughly investigated the issue of equipment selection so that it complies with all the requirements for reading accuracy and uninterrupted operations. For several years the team has tested solutions offered by various

foreign and domestic manufacturers but each time shortfalls were identified which did not allow for theto control of fuel parameters on the required scale. With other manufacturers there were many issues when due to shaking and weather conditions the equipment was providing

wrong inaccurate results and even totally broke. The team was forced to always have a measuring dipstick to meter the amount of fuel in the tank. After many unsuccessful tests the  technical team drew its attention to Omnicomm equipment.

“Rally-raids for SUVs and trucks have always been considered a race for strong, goal-oriented and highly motivated people taking high barriers to the targets set. Extreme conditions do not allow the team to relax even for a moment. Our credo is to always pay big attention to our transport and preparation of the crew members. After each race we are improving characteristics of technical support by using high-tech and reliable equipment. Now for all races we use Omnicomm solutions to have high-precision

measures of fuel level and to monitor the location and truck performance as well”.

SERGEY SAVOSTIN KAMAZ-MASTER TEAM NAVIGATOR:

Successful cooperation with KAMAZ-master proved high quality and reliability of Omnicomm equipment which can be used in the most severe road conditions providing accurate results. The international rally Dakar-2015 became an absolute triumph

for KAMAZ-master team. Its crews occupied the whole podium. The gold winner was the crew of Ayrat Mardeev. The second place went to the crew of Eduard Nikolaev. The crew of Andrey Karginov, the winner of the rally in 2014, got the third place.

environments involving fluctuations of temperature and atmospheric pressure, high resistance to vibration loads and dust.

It is exactly the explosion proof characteristics that were the main requirement to fuel monitoring equipment on behalf of ISAF.

1500 explosion proof fuel level sensors Omnicomm LLS 20230 were set on

A key goal for any government is to maximize its defensive posture. One critical aspect of that effort is the effective delivery and provisioning of fuel in military zones.

COOPERATION WITH OMNICOMMFor example, in Afghanistan, the main objective set by the United States military was the prevenation of fuel theft by local civilian drivers who had been contracted by the military to deliver fuel. Despite the fact that transportation of fuel was carried out using a proprietary military fleet, petroleum tanker drivers were hired from amongst the local population. Hiring local personnel was also necessary because of the inherent danger of the work involved: attacks on fuel convoys were not uncommon. The resulting theft of fuel tankers by these attackers, and the occasional explosion of such stolen fuel tankers, caused significant disruption to military fuel delivery schedules.

After a thorough examination of several large companies, the United States military’s Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) chose the GlobalTrak solution by Orbcomm; this chosen solution was fitted with Omnicomm fuel level sensors LLS 20230. This particular model of fuel level sensor was chosen to be integrated in Orbcomm GlobalTrak transport monitoring solution due to the reliable explosion-proof characteristics and the high level of accuracy in harsh

“We see an ever growing market demand for solutions in the field of transport monitoring and fuel consumption control in such regions as Africa, Latin America and the Middle East, where fuel theft is a very common practice. We hope that our solution will be a major deterrent in this issue in the military and commercial areas around the world and will significantly improve the efficiency of fuel carriers”.

petroleum tankers of NATO International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in Afghanistan.

Now the system shows in real time the location of transport, the fuel level and the security status of petroleum tankers using mobile and satellite connection. In cases of sudden operational disorder of a vehicle, an alarm signal, or a sudden change of fuel level, the sensor sends urgent information

Page 21: Casebook Omnicomm ENG new logo

The ability of our products to work in the most difficult conditions is confirmed not only by numerous tests but also by operating experience, including the KAMAZ-master team during the Dakar, the Silk Way rally, the Gold of Kagan marathon. Equipping with our fuel sensors the transport of the NATO army, operating in the Afghan highlands, is further evidence of reliability of our equipment

to the dispatcher indicating the exact location of the vehicle. Omnicomm fuel consumption monitoring system shows accurate and precise results in various difficult climatic conditions with sizable temperature and atmospheric pressure fluctuations.

SPECIFICS OF THE PROJECTThe project was not an ordinary one for Omnicomm since interaction with the

client was not direct. Omnicomm installed its fuel level sensors as part of a joint project with Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) and Orbcomm to equip ISAF logistics units with transport control systems. All works were conducted together with Omnicomm’s American partner, Orbcomm. This experience proved to be a success in terms of Omnicomm equipment integration into another fleet management system.

Page 25: Casebook Omnicomm ENG new logo

Although the process of equipping the fleet has not yet been completed, we can already draw preliminary conclusions and evaluate the economic effect of the system. For the whole period of cooperation, a tremendous amount of work has been carried out.

NUMBER OF UNITS EQUIPPED TO DATETo date, this is how many unitswere equipped with the system:• 17,656 units were equipped with

Omnicomm fuel level sensors• 3,500 units were equipped with

Omnicomm on-board terminals.

Presently, the transport is being re-equipped, and existing third-party monitoring systems are being replaced by Omnicomm systems. The versatility of the equipment allows it to be installed on units of varying complexity and modifications, and integrate any solutions.

RESULTS• The solution paid for itself after 1.5 years

of operation• Fuel costs decreased by 15%• Operation of the company fleet was

systemized

Thus, based on the monitoring results, individual basic consumption standards of fuel for all types of vehicles and their tasks were defined, making it possible to prevent theft of fuel and, consequently, reduce the cost of fuel.

During the project implementation phase, we managed to increase the efficiency of fleet management of OJSC AK Transneft, rule out the misuse of equipment, reduce the number of required maintenance sessions and coordinate the work of the internal services of the company.

RESULTS TO BE ACHIEVED IN THE FINAL STAGE OF THE PROJECT• 20,000 units equipped with Omnicomm

fleet management system• 30,000 installed Omnicomm LLS fuel level

sensors 4,700 installed additional sensors that control the work of detachable equipment

• Integration of fleet management system with with the financial systems of OJSC AK Transneft.

“The project for the construction of the fleet management system at OJSC AK Transneft can

with no exaggeration be called one of the largest and most complex in Russia. The scope,

territorial distribution, complex company structure, consisting of 36 branches in all regions of

Russia are the key features of this project”.

5 MILLION USD SAVINGS ON FUEL COSTS

SPECIFICS OF EAST AFRICANJOINT PROJECT Diesel consumption is one of the major operational costs for the fleet, telecom operators and tower owners. The energy costs are 80% of the operating expense, with the generators working 40% in the daytime.

At the same time the problem of fueltheft in Africa is really crucial, the rate of tampering with vehicles is very high. Normally the drivers are the ones involved in fuel theft in the country.

Specifically theft happens on stationary assets which makes it problematic to identify whether the contractors, guards, drivers are the ones responsible for it.

During the implementation of large ambitious projects involving the remote monitoring of mobile base stations in East Africa, Galooli decided to apply Omnicomm LLS fuel level sensors for fuel consumption monitoring.

In particular, Omnicomm LLS 20160 fuel level sensors have been installed on over 2,000 diesel generators powering remote mobile base stations in Uganda. Thanks to installed Omnicomm equipment the generator fuel costs have decreased by 30  -  40%, and overall savings have amounted to over $5 m per year.

FIGURES OF EFFICIENCY• The level of fuel theft in Uganda amounted

to about 40% before installing Omnicomm fuel monitoring system, and about 7% after installing

• Fuel consumption reduced in 34% just in two years

• The company to save more than $5 m annually

• Collocation billing from system provides higher and more efficient revenues stream Implementation of Omnicomm fuel monitoring solution in East Africa showed that fuel lost due to false invoicing and fuel theft can reach 30-40% of the fuel expense.

OTHER RESULTS• After the installation of Omnicomm system

specific areas where fuel theft occurred were uncovered. One of them is theft through the return pipe. Thus, earlier when the fuel monitoring system was not applied, the return pipe could be removed from the genset tanker not allowing the unburnt fuel to return there. It would go to an empty jerrican instead. This happened at the sites that mostly ran 24/7 and were guarded

• With the help of the system it became possible to identify the persons responsible for theft

• Poor conditions on sites, such as contaminated fuel, broken generators and parts, dead batteries etc. were revealed according to the system parameters

Galooli Group is one of the leading telematics vendors of energy-saving solutions and technologies for remote control, monitoring and security for out-of-the-way facilities. The company has operations in Africa and Latin America with commercial solutions deployed in 22 countries for over 1,500 corporate clients.

MR. YUVAL GOLDBERG MARKETING MANAGER, GALOOLI“By using reliable and verified data from Omnicomm fuel level sensors, we at Galooli are able to provide our clients with real consumption rates, constant fuel level, fuel drains and eliminate false fuel invoicing. Galooli’s remote performance and analysis solution relies on the most accurate fuel readings in the market. One of the company’s specific offers in the market is the so-called “Triple-sense system”, an independent fuel pump control system to manage internally both fuel stations and tankers. It includes Sensatron vehicle identification devices and fueling automation systems with the help of which fleet managers can effectively track fuel dispensing and fuel consumption. Based on locally available vehicle and driver identification data this computerized system controls refueling of vehicles via GPRS, GSM, RF or LAN Communications (on-line mode).

Before integrating Omnicomm solutions the company was applying fuel monitoring equipment of the largest US transport telematics providers. It is the quality, simplicity in integration and comparative cost efficiency of Omnicomm fuel monitoring solutions that influenced their decision to partner with Omnicomm.

Sensatron Fuel Management equipment is composed of sensors which monitor fuel flow, both to the engine and reserves flowing back to fuel tank, and a control system transmitting the information using GSM and GPS modem to the company’s server, where the data is collected and analyzed. Sensatron system offers several refueling scenarios based on the order of the driver and the vehicle identification. It is possible to connect over 200 fuel level sensors to one Sensatron control system.

Natav Services Ltd. recommends integrating Omnicomm fuel level sensors in the monitoring system. These are the key features of Omnicomm fuel consumption monitoring equipment:• Simplicity of integration into various

types of fleet management systems with vast or limited functionality and different objectives for fuel monitoring

• Innovative approach to adjustability of equipment which allows to fully blend with specific fleet management systems for petroleum stations

• Sensatron system + Omnicomm fuel monitoring solutions = an integrated vehicle fuel monitoring device with GPS coverage = successful product in telematics market. Natav Services, Israel, has already equipped 150 petroleum stations integrating Omnicomm Fuel Level Sensors within Sensatron system. Omnicomm LLS provides highly accurate reliable data which is not affected by the complexity of the system it is integrated in.

NATAV SERVICES RECOMMENDS INTEGRATING OMNICOMM LLS IN THE MONITORING SYSTEM

Natav Services Ltd. is one of the fastest developing Israeli integrators and distributors of fleet management solutions. Founded in 2010, the company has already reached the top positions in the transport telematics market of Israel and is actively heading abroad. Natav Services provides complex solutions for fleet management that are applied to petroleum controllers, storage tanks, light vehicles and heavy trucks.

Since there is no one to buy fuel in the tundra and the factual fuel consumption rate is low, Omnicomm system did not allow the drivers to top-up on a full scale. Thus, on the stage of test installations already, it was possible to identify and fight the problem of drivers fixing-up with operators of fuel filling stations and eliminate false data reports on top-ups.

COMPARATIVE TESTSAfter test installation of Omnicomm fleet management system comparative tests with the systems by other manufacturers were carried out during several months.

Several different transport units – trucks, bulldozers, diesels – were equipped with Omnicomm systems. In line the same transport units were also equipped with fleet management systems produced by other manufacturers. During installation of fleet management equipment third-party specialists supplying Norilsk Nickel fleet with fuel monitoring solutions faced a number of challenges and difficulties, unlike Omnicomm team.

As a result of a series of tests carried out by Norilsk Nickel specialists, Omnicomm fuel consumption control and fleet management system was chosen.

In 2013 Norilsk Nickel completed the first stage of Omnicomm equipment installation aimed at cost optimization of the transport company. During two months Omnicomm fleet management system was set on the first 800 pieces of equipment, this work

REQUIREMENTS TO FLEET MANAGEMENT EQUIPMENTNorilsk is known for its harsh northern climate. Control and management of the company’s numerous fleet was complicated due to tough weather conditions. Therefore, basic requirement to transport monitoring equipment was reliability and performance in extreme conditions. In choice of complex fleet management system with fuel consumption monitoring solution:• Determination of effective fuel load for

each piece of equipment• Precise definition of fuel consumption

during a shift• Timely refueling of transport and its

maintenance• A single solution for monitoring of all types

of vehicles

being performed on a “turnkey” basis. Before the end of 2013 over 2,000 various transportation units were fully fitted with Omnicomm fleet management system.

WHY OMNICOMMSpecific results reached after installation of Omnicomm equipment : • Only two Omnicomm systems were

rejected in course of equipment installation – that comprises less than 0,001% of supply scope

• Correctness of readings on fuel is very high while the measurement error does not exceed 1%

• After installation Omnicomm specialists performed control measurements to ensure correctness of fuel readings. Provided they were choosing transportation items at random – all the equipment showed accurate data

• The fuel monitoring system was successfully installed on different types of vehicles: LCV

transport, as well as on special vehicles such as ATVs, tankers, locomotives. All the vehicles were equipped with Omnicomm LLS fuel level sensors, while some equipment was also fitted with Omnicomm onboard terminals and Omnicomm Online software for data processing.

“Omnicomm equipment showed really good results and we are considering this company’s proposal to equip other fleets of Norilsk Nickel. We have conducted navigation without fuel control for a long time, and its economic outcomes are indeed costly. Applying fuel sensors gave huge economic effect. Besides, with Omnicomm system in operation every employee now knows – fleet management is a real necessity for an effectively running enterprise, and all violations will be prosecuted. We are ready to consider other Omnicomm software products such as site analysis, operational planning and vehicle comparisons as well. Cooperation with this partner brings confidence in results; the company specialists guarantee quality, speed of installation and further operation”.

OJSC Gazprom consists of multiple subsidiaries, each of which performs a certain function in the general system of interaction. In 2012, the vehicle fleet of the subsidiary of OJSC Gazprom - OJSC GazpromAvtopredpriyatie, was equipped with Omnicomm fleet management system. OJSC GazpromAvtopredpriyatie

GAZPROM IN THE RELIABLE“CARE” OF OMNICOMM

specializes in providing transport services to the parent company, its affiliates, and the top management of enterprises of OJSC Gazprom. The company’s fleet mainly consists of Mercedes passenger cars (Aclass, Cclass, Eclass, Sprinter, Vito, Atego, Unimog) and Caterpillar loaders – a total of 149 transport units.

OJSC Gazprom is a Russian energy company involved in geological exploration, production, transportation, storage, processing, marketing and sales of gas, gas condensate and oil, as well as production and sales of thermal and electric energy. It is the largest company in Russia that owns the longest gas transportation system over 160,000 km long and is the world leader in the industry.

Page 35: Casebook Omnicomm ENG new logo
Page 36: Casebook Omnicomm ENG new logo

24-ONLINE DATA TRANSFERSince the fleet specializes in providing services for transporting the company’s top management, all information about location and movement of vehicles must be available 24 hours a day and must be automatically transferred to the Automated Control Center of Rostransnadzor (RACC), which monitors vehicle locations, speed modes, task execution time, mileage, etc.

ACCURACY OF TRANSMITTED INFORMATION Accuracy of the information transmitted to RACC depends on a route and travel time.

EQUIPMENT RELIABILITY High reliability of the supplied equipment is a very important requirement based on the specificity of vehicle utilization.

Before commencing the work, OJSC GazpromAvtopredpriyatie organized a tender, where representatives of the customer identified the requirements to the supplied equipment and services, as well as to the organizations, which took part in the contest.

“For us, it was very important to choose not only quality and reliable equipment, but also the supplier with extensive experience and a well-developed network of service stations”, – said Anatoli Volkov, Chief Specialist and Process Equipment Supplier, OJSC Gazprom-Avtopredpriyatie.

INSTALLATION STAGESIn April 2012, Omnicomm specialists implemented a pilot project and equipped a Mercedes Sprinter minibus and a CATerpillar loader with the Omnicomm systems. The results of the testing showed that - thanks to Omnicomm fleet management and fuel consumption monitoring system - the mileage and the actual time of equipment operation were reduced.

“The installed equipment accurately shows the location, speed and route of a vehicle and informs Rostransnadzor thereof in a timely manner; in addition, it is included in the official register of measuring instruments of the Russian Federation. We tested Omnicomm fleet management system for a relatively short period of time - only 2 weeks, but it was enough for us to decide to equip the entire fleet of the company with the system”, –added Anatoli Volkov.

In the summer of 2012, the project on equipping the fleet of OJSC GazpromAvtopredpriyatie with Omnicomm Optim on-board terminals was initiated. Information on transport operation now goes directly from the terminal to Rostransnadzor control center. Installation and configuration of equipment were implemented in several stages, and by

the end of the year, the entire fleet of the company consisting of 149 vehicles was equipped with Omnicomm Optim terminals. This solution allows the owner of the vehicle fleet to quickly receive information on the location of vehicles, their speed, on the data obtained from the fuel level sensors and additional equipment.

The information is presented as a report on operation of company transport vehicles of all categories, and it does not matter if they are all in one place or distributed across different sites. The information provided allows for effective implementation of dispatching and accounting tasks: efficient management of the fleet that accounts for the actual status and location of all vehicles.

By the end of 2014, the company plans to connect the CAN tires of the vehicles to Omnicomm Optim terminals. This will further monitor the vehicle’s technical condition in real time, collect data from all devices and respond to incorrect work of defective parts of the vehicle in a timely manner.

RESULTSAfter equipping OJSC GazpromAvtopredpriyatie the Omnicomm fleet management system, the following

results were achieved:• Full return on investment on equipment

through optimizing all logistical processes

• Mileage reduced by 10%• Reduced time required to complete the

task• Obtaining real information on technology

effectiveness (mileage, routes, technical condition of vehicles).

“We have not conducted special calculations in order to define the return on investment in the system, but I can tell you for sure that the system has already paid for itself during one year of operation - at least thanks to the reduced mileage and time required to complete tasks. However, the specificity of the fleet activity (transport of the top management of OJSC Gazprom) will not entail major savings through the reduction of transport time. The work is conducted based on the principle “complete the task at all costs”, and savings in this case may go by the wayside. Fault tolerance of the system is very high. The information we need is systematically and promptly delivered to the Rosnadzor Automated Control and Monitoring Center. I cannot recall cases when something didn’t work”, – said Anatoli Volkov, Chief Specialist and Process Equipment Supplier of OJSC Gazprom-Avtopredpriyatie.

STANISLAV EMELIANOVDEPUTY GENERAL DIRECTOR, OMNICOMM

“Our equipment is adjustable to various types of vehicles and machinery. It is a universal fuel consumption monitoring product to integrate with various types of fleet management systems. Precise telematics solutions are vital for mining machinery which is consuming large amounts of fuel. Wenco and Omnicomm have been partnering since 2003. Omnicomm’s equipment integrated in Wenco’s Dynamic Fuel Dispatch allows miners to know exact amounts of fuel in real-time mode, and thus, save lots of money”.

Page 41: Casebook Omnicomm ENG new logo

FUEL CONSUMPTION IN MINING INDUSTRYMining is a massive industry involving a diverse range of energy intensive processes, such as excavation, mine operation, material transfer, mineral preparation and separation.

Mining practically devours energy to produce ore. Statistics shows, that in the past decade fuel consumption at the top miners more than doubled. The massive haul trucks that transport this ore, burn larger amounts of diesel in this process. Furthermore, as open-pit mines age, they deepen, which forces the haul trucks to travel longer distances at a higher grade. That increases fuel consumption even more. Controlling fuel expenses through efficient fleet operations is a top priority for all mines. To create a new efficient fleet management system for miners Wenco needed precise and reliable fuel monitoring equipment which would perfectly integrate within their original system.

WENCO’S DYNAMIC FUEL DISPATCH SYSTEM POWERED BY OMNICOMM LLSWith mining fleet management systems primarily oriented at fuel consumption optimization, the choice of accurate fuel monitoring equipment is crucial. The new Wenco’s system – Dynamic Fuel Dispatch – was developed to achieve higher rates of fleet optimization and radically decrease unnecessary fuel expenditures in mining industry.

To be precise, Dynamic Fuel Dispatch is aimed at saving money by reducing fueling frequency and reducing travel and wait times at fuel locations, therefore keeping hauling units in production longer. The system works by automatically checking hauling unit fuel levels, and when it is time to fuel, matching each unit with the most convenient fuel location. Omnicomm LLS digital fuel level sensors are at the core of the system. They ensure highly accurate digital fuel readings for large mining equipment which doesn’t have such data automatically. Omnicomm LLS capacitive fuel level sensors send data to the fuel dispatching schedule in Wenco’s fleet control.

Fuel transactions are automatically recorded during the haul cycle when the

hauling unit comes within the range of the fuel truck or bay.

Wenco’s fuel dispatching schedule quickly and easily allows the dispatcher to set, view and change the fuel schedule, minimizing down time on the haul cycle.

Fuel consumption monitoring equipment designed and manufactured by Omnicomm, allowed Wenco to manage fuel costs in real-time. Now the system enables just-in-time refueling, which improves performance of mining machinery, raising efficiency figures and finally saving more money.

Omnicomm equipment provided better logistics for Wenco’s systems. Smooth and cost-effective operations are now available to all Wenco’s clients among which there are major international mining companies.

The improved product is a complete solution for efficiently managing fuel scheduling, fuel delivery, and current fuel tank levels.

Technical engineers at Wenco note: “Already installed at numerous Wenco client sites and integrated with Wenco’s Fleet Management System, Omnicomm capacitive fuel level sensors ensure high accuracy, readability and stability when calculating the exact level of fuel in the tank”.

THE TENDER AND TEST INSTALLATIONSIn 2014 STRABAG in Romania came to a conclusion that the fuel costs were too big. The company’s management decided to reduce fuel consumption with the help of fleet management systems. Following this objective, a tender was organized. Six companies competed in the tender. At the first stage only three of them were selected for test installation, including Guava 7.

As the second stage began, STRABAG thoroughly examined different fleet management equipment to install in its vehicles. The test installation lasted for 1 month. In its course three analogous vehicles were fitted with fleet management systems of various manufacturers. Omnicomm equipment was installed in one Mercedes Actros. As a result of the testing only Omnicomm showed the optimum results. After installation of Omnicomm solutions in test mode fuel consumption dropped from 65 liters per 100 km to 43 liters per 100 km. During that month the vehicle made 8000 km.

In addition to those results, the management of STRABAG liked the terms of the contract, which provided for fast and high-quality installation and maintenance from Guava 7. That helped to win the tender, despite the fact that the prices for the offer were the highest.

In March 2014 Omnicomm fleet management system was tested by the KAMAZ team and the Russian Geographical Society at the Pole of Cold. The research expedition was conducted from February 26 to March 10. It had the following objectives:• Setting the world record for under-ice immersion in particularly

low temperatures• Study of the flora and fauna of Lakes Labynkyr and Vorota,

collecting water and soil samples• Testing technology in low temperatures

“Reliable vehicles. Iron people» is an experiment in survival of equipment and people in harsh conditions, which united representatives from all walks of life. Oymyakon, the Pole of Cold, was where the international team headed: divers from the research team of the Russian Geographical Society and the Federation of Underwater Sports, scientists from the Institute of Biological Issues of the Cryolite Zone of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and journalists (including a representative of the Discovery Channel, the Cousteau team member, Bozhena Ostoich).

The path ran from Yakutsk to the coldest point of the Northern hemisphere of the planet

- village of Oymyakon, where in 1924, the lowest temperature of -71.2°C was recorded.

All participants had their own objectives. The scientists planned to obtain water and soil samples from the lakes, which earlier were not available for research. The journalists decided to make a film about the mystical lost Lake of Labynkyr, which, according to the legend, is inhibited by a monster, who the locals refer to as “Labynkyr Devil”. The divers planned an extreme ice dive, which would beat the world record. In addition, one of the members of the expedition had been authorized to conduct research for the

program of colonization of Mars. The objective of KAMAZ was to deliver the expedition to the uninhabited region of Yakutia and also test the specially prepared trucks in the conditions of the circumpolar area.

And you can’t simply call it a transfer:if the vehicles do not pass, there will be nothing to show – no records, no shows, no films. Local residents were sure that the expedition will not be able to reach its destination – there was too much snow that winter.

Before starting the expedition, the KAMAZ vehicles of Northern specialization were equipped with additional Omnicomm Profi on-board terminals, Omnicomm LLS fuel level sensors, and LLD fuel level

indicators, installed in the cabins. They made it possible to track down in real time the location of the expedition, as well as to assess the remaining fuel and its quantity required to complete each phase of the route.

In 2 weeks the expedition team managed to overcome 2,010 kilometers, 250 of which were traveled down polar off-roads and 30, literally, while punching their way through rocks and snow at a speed of just over 600 meters per hour.

KAMAZ became the first wheeled vehicle that managed to go through these lands, and Omnicomm fleet management system - the first in its segment to withstand all tests in extremely low temperatures.

“The Omnicomm system worked perfectly with our vehicles,” noted Ali Kariyev, the Head of the Magadan KAMAZ Automobile Center. “In extreme conditions, the equipment worked without a glitch, and the fuel level data allowed us to replenish the fuel on time”.

During the expedition there occured an emergency situation, as a result of which the mobile communication with the crew was interrupted for almost 24 hours. Omnicomm fleet management system allowed the team to promptly detect the location of the crew and pass their coordinates to the command center.

«The most difficult thing to cope with is not the low temperature, but virtual absence of communication with the outside world. Now we can’t even imagine that there are places where there is no mobile communication and the Internet...”, – said Angelika Akueva, the publicist of the expedition.

When they reached Lake Labynkyr, the research team performed an ice dive, which set a world record in terms of the depth of a dive achieved at the Pole of Cold. It was the first time in the world that somebody dove to the depth of 59.6 m to the bottom of an inaccessible water reservoir. In the course of the research, the participants also collected samples of the flora and fauna of the Lake for further study.

PARTNERSHIP WITH OMNICOMMA series of disappointments with the components for fuel control Mobilisis was purchasing from two partners in eastern Europe, led the company to seek a new reliable manufacturer in the market for the integration of high quality fuel consumption monitoring equipment in Mobilisis brand fleet management solutions. The two companies from which Mobilisis was purchasing fuel monitoring equipment before did not show good results causing trouble to the end clients.

After negotiations and trials Omnicomm and Mobilisis signed a partnership agreement which has been ongoing up to the present day. One specific of the cooperation between the two companies is that Omnicomm fuel level sensors have been used to equip the most various vehicles and the special transportation of different tonnage. For instance, Mobilisis installed Omnicomm LLS inside railway transportation and even one-of-a-kind in Croatia and only three-in-Europe huge Zagrebtrans special machines, a Liebherr mobile crane LTM 11200-9.1 model. The oil tanks of a 108-ton huge crane can accommodate up to 900 liters of fuel consumed by two diesels with capacity of 270 and 500 kW. At present Omnicomm LLS are installed inside 80 Agricultural Tractors in Croatia, with more projects to follow.

Omnicomm has been cooperating with Mobilisis for over 4 years.

Since the beginning of the partnership around 2000 Omnicomm LLS fuel level sensors have been installed to end clients, among which are Podravka, the largest Croatian food company.

Yamaha Factory racing team is a squad of prominent champion racers supported by Yamaha Motor France. The team now consists of 3 core members: Olivier Pain, Alessandro Botturi and Michael Metge. They participate in various competitions around the world including the Dakar, where the riders are not only faced with all kinds of terrain, but also have to battle incredible temperatures.

Careful measurement of fuel is very important for a racing team. Yamaha had been considering equipping the rally motorbikes with fuel monitoring lies for some period of time. Preparing for the rally, it is necessary to accurately calculate the required amount of fuel in the tank. During the route it’s vital to monitor fuel consumption to know its exact amount. Besides, weight of the motorcycle is indeed a very crucial parameter for racers. It makes no sense taking fuel “in reserve”.

With the release of the brand new rally motorbike Yamaha WR450F Rally with only one non-transparent fuel tank the team had to search for special fuel consumption monitoring equipment.

TEST INSTALLATIONS The previous Yamaha rally motorbikes had four fuel reservoirs made of transparent plastic and did not require obligatory fuel monitoring. The new motorbikes Yamaha WR450F Rally have only one light carbon fuel tank mounted underneath the pilot’s seat. The level of fuel became totally invisible. That raised the problem of precise fuel monitoring for Yamaha even more.

Yamaha technical specialists modified Omnicomm LLS and Omnicomm LLD installing them in the new Yamaha WR450F Rally.

During the stage of test installations which lasted for 2 months, Yamaha purchased the first trial fuel monitoring equipment, adapted the access to fuel tank and installed Omnicomm’s products following significant modifications. The difficulty was in the sizes of all the details which had to be adjusted to fit inside the motorbike.

But despite the difficulties Yamaha decided to equip their new rally motorbikes with Omnicomm fuel monitoring solutions. The team saw that Omnicomm fuel monitoring equipment had already been involved in the Dakar Rally with Kamaz Master. It proved to be successful during several races in the harshest conditions. The second criterion was that Omnicomm equipment provides

highly accurate fuel consumption figures. The level of precision is 99.2%.

“We resumed that the product is almost ideal for us: precise, adjustable and already tested in extreme environment”, – Mr. Rodolphe Beau, Technical Director at Yamaha Motor France commented.

SPECIFICS OF THE PROJECT Unlike the new motorbike model, the older

Yamaha motorbikes had 4 transparent fuel tanks. one at the back, one in the center and two at the front. The two tanks at the front of the bike were transparent and allowed the pilot to verify its gasoline consumption. He used to check fuel level just by looking at it. However, firstly, it was dangerous because he was not keeping track of the road, and, secondly – not accurate because the fuel was in constant motion. Certainly, the evaluations were totally presumable and imprecise.

“Omnicomm LLS has never been installed in motorbikes before. What the guys from Yamaha did with Omnicomm equipment is amazing! Yamaha Racing Factory is indeed creative not only in racing but technically. What’s more, we are happy our product works precisely no matter what – even in the bikes for which they were not designed initially”.

STANISLAV MAKSIMOV HEAD OF INTERNATIONAL SALES, OMNICOMM

Page 59: Casebook Omnicomm ENG new logo

The new tank was under the seat of a pilot, so it was impossible to use a mechanical system, the level indications had to be clearly visible to the driver.

Although Omnicomm equipment had already been used in rally vehicles for Kamaz Master, equipping Yamaha was an absolutely unique project. Motorcycles are much smaller than trucks and vehicles. The team looked at the bike details Yamaha

detached and understood that nothing was really suitable for the new fuel tank. Yamaha team, guided by Omnicomm’s technical support specialists, had to make quite a few modifications. Omnicomm LLS and LLD were installed in a motorcycle for the first time. • The diameter of electric connection and

the plastic connectors were reduced• The plate of the sensor was really small

for the storage tank so the square plate

of fuel level sensor had to be removed. On the new plate Omnicomm LLS is used without modifications

• Omnicomm LLD 5 sm/ 3sm were required. The monitors were mounted on the bikes

Christian Caillon, Chief Engineer, Yamaha: “We faced some difficulties with sizes. The plate of Omnicomm LLS fuel level sensor was too small, so the original square plate was removed. We made a new plate on which the fuel level sensor is now used without any changes. We also needed a monitor to track to fuel left in the reservoir, so we adjusted Omnicomm LLD to the motorbike. There have been a lot of efforts but we were eager to work with Omnicomm to have high-precision reliable equipment for the team”.

TECHNOLOGICAL PARTNER OF YAMAHA TEAMOmnicomm fuel monitoring equipment made a debut on rally racing motorbikes in the beginning of 2015. It provided accurate fuel readings for Yamaha racing team during Dakar 2015.

Following the results of successful demo installation, Omnicomm LLS fuel level sensors and LLD were fitted in 5 rally racing bikes. The Dakar test proved that even modified Omnicomm equipment functioned accurately on motorbikes in harsh conditions of Dakar rally.

“We always search for the most reliable and efficient products. At the same time we look for the ways to decrease the volume and weight of all the parts of our bikes. With the new bikes this year we especially needed fuel monitoring equipment to provide accurate fuel data readings for the marathon riders. We conducted a thorough Internet search and came across Omnicomm products. We saw Omnicomm’s equipment functioning successfully in KAMAZ-master racing trucks during the rallies in the harshest conditions. Omnicomm LLS gives highly accurate figures: the precision is 99.2 percent. That is a very good percentage of accuracy which satisfied our specific needs We tested Omnicomm for 2 months, but the real test was Dakar 2015 where the bike riders are not only faced with all kinds of terrain, but also have to battle incredible temperatures. If a product is good on a rally, we keep it for years”.

RODOLPHE BEAUTECHNICAL DIRECTOR, YAMAHA

The weight of the bike decreased due to technical modifications and due the fact the amount of fuel was precise

The Holding accounts for 25% of the Russian market products of non-ferrous metals, over 50% of the European market for copper powders, approximately 60-70% of the Russian coal exports to Western and Eastern Europe. The total number of personnel is over 70 thousand people.

In February 2012, the Ural Mining and Metallurgical Company arranged a tender for equipping the shunting diesel and main-

line locomotives with railway transport monitoring and fuel control system.

For the purpose of the contest, the testing program and the working group for the railway fleet management systems were created. Organizers of the tests were to determine the technical and economic feasibility and usability of the monitoring systems when used on the locomotives of the company.

OJSC Ural Mining and Metallurgical Company (UMMC) is a Russian metallurgical company, the second largest copper producer in Russia. UMMC makes up one technological chain comprised of the enterprises from the mining, metallurgical, and metal-working industries, as well as from the Russian construction industry.

Page 66: Casebook Omnicomm ENG new logo

For testing purposes, JSC Uralelektromed (a subsidiary of UMMC) selected two locomotives,

TGM4B and TGM6D, which were equipped with Omnicomm fuel consumption monitoring and fleet management system. Prior to the testing, the working group members checked the accuracy of measuring devices of the fuel-dispensing devices of the selected locomotives. The testing was conducted by filling up the measuring calibrated tank.

In the course of the testing of the Omnicomm equipment, representatives of the UMMC working group have conducted a number of activities to determine and control the following parameters of the locomotive:1. Total amount of filled fuel2. Total amount of drained fuel3. Remaining fuel in the tanks of the

locomotive4. Fuel consumption per day, per month5. Daily mileage of the locomotive6. Fuel consumption per 1 km, 1 engine

hour, at idle7. Run time of the engine8. Locomotive run time when in motion9. Speed of the locomotive in real time.

At the end of each shift, the obtained

information was collected and analyzed. To obtain the most objective data, the following tasks were carried out in addition to the testing program for the monitoring systems:• diesel consumption standards for

locomotives were determined• the potential of the monitoring system to

control the movement of the locomotive at low speeds of up to 3 km/h was tested

• test dispensing of diesel fuel of 20, 30, 40, 100 liters in volume was conducted

• weekly and monthly reports on the operation of the technology were generated.

“The products of the five companies-participants of the tender were tested by the UMMC working groups for 10 months. During the testing, we have identified positive and negative aspects of the offered equipment. For example, the fuel level sensors of one of the participants regularly went out of order. The reason was low-quality performance of the device that broke when moving large volumes of fuel in the tank of the locomotive. In some cases, the specialists of companies-participants did not respond to our requests in a timely manner. We also have noted some positive aspects of the experiment. We managed to determine fuel consumption

standards 30 thousand more engine hours of the locomotive engine life and generate reports, which included the performance indicators of the locomotive. And, perhaps most importantly - we have decided to equip the entire rolling stock of the Ural Mining and Metallurgical Company with Omnicomm fleet management system”,– commented Mikhail Kalinin, Head of the Division of Motor Vehicles of LLC UMMC Holding.

30 thousand more engine hours of the

locomotive engine life

Page 67: Casebook Omnicomm ENG new logo

In December 2012, we began to equip the rolling stock of the UMMC with the Omnicomm systems. First of all, we have modernized shunting and main-line locomotives, as well as the additional equipment: trolleys, cranes, and track machines. In one year, the monitoring system was installed on 130 UMMC units of various modifications. After a month of operation of the monitoring system, the UMMC specialists have drawn some preliminary

results: «Thanks to the optimization of the technology, we are able to save 50 liters of fuel a day for just one locomotive. We also found out that the engine of one idling locomotive for one month amounts to 46.6% of the total engine run volume with the total consumption of 5911 liters per month», added the Head of the Division of Motor Vehicles of LLC UMMC Holding. 130 units of OJSC UMMC have been equipped with the Omnicomm systems. Based on this

data, we can conclude that the Omnicomm fleet management system paid for itself in less than a month of its operation.

The UMMC leadership, based on the figures obtained by the Omnicomm monitoring system, have decided to replace the engines of the shunting locomotives with more economical ones. In order to accomplish this, the Shadrin Auto-Aggregate Plant (part of the UMMC machine-building complex) has launched a new line of production aimed at modernization of the shunting locomotives.

“The modernization allows us to significantly improve technical and economic performance of diesel locomotives, in particular, to increase the service life of engines by 30 thousand engine hours, to reduce fuel consumption by up to 30% and as a consequence, decrease the amount of harmful emissions into the atmosphere”,  – said the Head of the Division of Motor Vehicles of LLC UMMC Holding.

It is worth noting that all the machines, which are delivered to the enterprises of the Ural Mining and Metallurgical Company, are equipped with Omnicomm fleet management system.

“The feasibility of implementing the fleet management system is always connected

to the systematization of the processes; it is sometimes referred to as a transition

from «manual» control to automated monitoring. You can be a very competent and

experienced manager, but if you’ve got the wrong figures on the table, the company’s

losses are inevitable”.

Murmansk Commercial Seaport (MCSP) is located on the eastern coast of the Kola Bay of the Barents Sea; it is the largest transport company of the city of Murmansk. It was established in 1915 and immediately after its establishment, this ice-free port became a port of strategic importance to Russia; it turned into one of the main Russian ports for foreign trade operations.

JSC Murmansk Commercial Seaport features seventeen berths with a total length of about 3,000 meters. The length and depth of the berths allow the port to accept and complete cargo operations with vessels with a draft of up to 15.5 meters, a length of more than 265 meters and a dead weight of up to 150,000 tons. Since the beginning of 1999, the port has been successfully working with PANAMAX vessels carrying up to 80,000 tons with the productivity of up to 20,000 tons a day. The port is equipped with modern technology: large heavy gantry cranes with lifting capacity up to 40 tons, a loading machine for transshipment of apatite concentrate with productivity of over 1,000 t/h, and fork-lift trucks with lifting capacity ranging from 1.5 to 45 tons. For auxiliary operations, the port is equipped with tractor engines and roll trailers (up to 60 tons), bulldozers, tractors, and shunting locomotives. The turnover equals to 18 million tons per year, of which 80% accounts for coal logistics.

Page 78: Casebook Omnicomm ENG new logo

The main activity of the MCSP are loading and unloading operations in seaports, including unloading and loading of cargo from and to transport means,

ships, wagons and motor transport. Today, the fleet of the enterprise consists of 182 units of specialized machines serving 220 thousand wagons and 600 ships a year. With such high volumes of work, it is extremely difficult to control the operation of special machinery and calculate downtime.

In 2013, the representatives of the Murmansk Commercial Seaport held a tender aimed at replacing the existing transport and fuel consumption monitoring system.

The previously selected equipment did not cope with volumes of work and malfunctioned. In addition, the terminals that were installed on the equipment incorrectly displayed information on fuel consumption, transferring data with a large margin of error. Therefore, the contest was organized with aim to replace the existing system with a more reliable and accurate equipment that would allow the company to do the following:• Obtain information on the operation of

the technology

• Gain control over the fuel as it travels from the refueling tanker to the gas station before it leaves the territory of the enterprise

• Take into account engine hours worked; receive timely notifications of the approaching scheduled maintenance session

• Generate reports showing the efficiency of a given unit and the entire fleet of the company

In order to make the experiment as objective as possible, it was decided to equip the special machinery of JSC MCSP with monitoring systems of various manufacturers and test all of them in operation.

By the end of the contest, only one solution still worked. Based on the results, the management decided to equip the entire fleet with Omnicomm fuel consumption monitoring and fleet management system.

“For us, it is important that the equipment works properly in extremely

harsh conditions. For example, the range of temperatures that our

machines have to work in varies from -30 up to +30 degrees Celsius. In

addition, we have to work in a hostile environment under the influence

of precipitation, sea air, chemical and mineral substances, manganese

ore and apatite concentrate. All of these factors have a negative

influence on the equipment and machinery, causing their malfunction.

And equipment has to work 365 days a year in any climatic conditions”.

ALEXANDER MASKO GENERAL DIRECTOR, JSC MCSP

Page 79: Casebook Omnicomm ENG new logo

Special attention was paid to selecting the contracting company. The following requirements were given the utmost priority:• Experience with similar projects• Availability of permits, certificates and

licenses in order to work with radio devices

• Availability of skilled personnel• Availability of the support service unit in

Murmansk

“We have seen the first results of the introducing Omnicomm fleet management

system very soon - already in the first month of test operation, we saved 2,155 liters,

which equaled to 364,000 rubles. Based on the analysis of the obtained data, the

economic security service conducts raids with aim to identify negligent workers, who

leave the machines on in the idle mode during lunch or downtime. The administration

has been taking measures to improve the efficiency of the use of the machinery, and

already in a few months we have noticed the significantly decreased operation of the

machinery in the idle mode”.

• Possibility of acquiring additional equipment when expanding the fleet

• Project cost

The implementation of the fleet management system commenced in late October of 2013, and in 6 months the project was completed and the equipment was installed on 182 units of machinery. It is worth noting that the vehicles practically did not stop their operation during the

equipping process. The machinery was out of operation nly for a short time in order to carry out the necessary assembly work. Another positive result brought by the implemented system was the identification of the facts of fuel drainage with purpose of embezzlement or fueling up other equipment.

Thus, in the course of monitoring performed by the system based on the set parameters, a case of draining of the oil products from one unit of loading equipment onto another was recorded. After this grave violation, important personnel decisions had to be made and administrative penalties had to be applied. Based on the obtained data and the 6-month experience in operating Omnicomm fleet management system, the company concluded that the financial fuel and engine life economy effect on the machinery is obvious.

After a month of operation, representatives of the Murmansk Commercial Seaport suggested integrating data obtained from Omnicomm equipment into the automated information system (AIS) of the company. This application is utilized by the MCS management team to manage the company’s business processes.

Page 80: Casebook Omnicomm ENG new logo
Page 81: Casebook Omnicomm ENG new logo

“The automated information system now displays where the company vehicles are located and which function the vehicles complete within the given time. It is very convenient for the optimization of business processes. The company plans to use the potential of Omnicomm terminals in order to improve efficiency of loading operations using cranes and loading equipment. For example, a sensor, mounted on the grapple or bucket loader will be able to give us the information on how many cargo operations and what optimum speed we need to load the coal and ore to the ship. Which ones of the crane operators work most effectively by loading more cargo with fewer operations and which ones do not. Who we should provide incentives and give bonuses to and who should not be receiving them. The Omnicomm solution integrated into the industrial safety system will be able to warn the driver of a loader with a special signal that reads: “Attention! You are now in the working zone of a crane in operation or next to a railway crossing”. This measure will significantly increase safety in our company. We have a lot of plans aimed to streamline the work of special equipment of the Murmansk Commercial Seaport, and we hope to implement them in the future. We are very happy that Omnicomm equipment is universal and can be integrated with many devices and software options. In the meantime, we recommend the Omnicomm solution to our business partners - SK Maly Port and a few coal enterprises of Kuzbass, which demonstrated their interest in our new solution; the best recommendation would be to show the results of the implementation of the system by our own example”.
