Presentiamo con soddisfazione l’edizione
2012 del Festival Linea d’Ombra che, con-
fermando una ormai lunga storia di qualità,
si propone con un cartellone quanto mai
ricco e variegato.
Il Comune di Salerno ha sostenuto fin
dall’inizio la manifestazione intuendone il
grande rilievo culturale e sociale. Nel corso
delle varie edizioni, infatti, si sono avvi-
cendati a Salerno i protagonisti interna-
zionali della comunicazione multimediale
declinata a trecentosessanta gradi. Linea
d’Ombra è riuscita ad accendere i riflettori,
con intuito ed anticipo, su fenomeni che
poi avrebbero caratterizzato le stagioni
successive: il precariato occupazionale e
sociale; la crisi delle relazioni personali;
generazionale. Una linea di prospettiva
sul futuro prossimo ed immediato che ha
fatto diventare l’appuntamento salernita-
We are proud to present the 2012 edition of
the Festival Linea d’Ombra which, in confir-
mation of a by now long history of quality,
offers as rich and varied a playbill as never
before.
The Municipality of Salerno has suppor-
ted this event from the beginning, sensing
its great cultural and social importance.
International protagonists from all areas of
multimedia communication have alternated
during the various editions. Linea d’Ombra
has, with insight and anticipation, mana-
ged to turn the spotlight on phenomena
that have characterised the seasons that
followed: job and social precariousness; the
personal relations crisis; the explosion of
virtual reality; unease with affection and the
rediscovery of new romanticism; inversion
of the generation sequence. This perspec-
tive on the near and immediate future has
made the Salerno appointment a theme
focus, eagerly awaited by employees and
the public, for exploring new tendencies.
Even the selected theme of this 2012 edition
seems to be currently pertinent. Our post-
modern society has been struck, damaged,
and deranged by a true earthquake, the re-
sults of which have affected every aspect of
our lives. The crisis is not just economic, but
is above all a crisis of existential models and
development. From today, the best thing to
do is rethink our future, in the same ways as
after a natural catastrophe. Experience has,
however, taught us that this catastrophe -
the moment in Aristotle’s Poetics when the
plot diffuses - demands new characters on
dopo una catastrofe naturale. L’esperienza
stage, it imposes new languages, it expects
creative originality after the consolidated
patterns have been broken. It seems to
me that this is the shared mission of Linea
d’Ombra and the role that the organisers
– coordinated by Peppe D’Antonio – have
assigned themselves in a moment during
which our Country is risking a dramatic
cultural decline.
The Municipality of Salerno renews its com-
mitment to culture and quality of life with
special attention to the new generations,
and in doing so hopes that participants in
and spectators of the presentations will be
fully satisfied.

Raggiunge un traguardo significativo la
manifestazione Linea d’Ombra – Festival
come Festival cinematografico è cresciuto
anno dopo anno fino ad assumere l’attuale
dimensione multi disciplinare con quattro
sezioni: cinema, musica, performing art
e scrittura.
particolare l’intero
panorama politico dei Paesi che si affac-
ciano sul Mediterraneo. Una stagione di
profondi cambiamenti che deve essere da
preludio ad una fase nuova. Nel mediterra-
neo, per tutti. Una forza di rinnovamento
che è pienamente conforme al percorso che
la nostra regione, per ragioni geografiche
e culturali, aperta al “mare nostrum”, ha
avviato negli ultimi due anni.
Una Campania che intende perseguire il
proprio sviluppo valorizzando soprattutto
Linea d’Ombra – Youth Culture Festival of
Salerno reaches an important goal.
A finishing post for an event that began as
a film festival but then grew, year after year,
to obtain the multi-discipline measurements
it has today, with four sections: films, music,
performing arts and writing.
It is a meeting of different artistic genres
that intertwine while maintaining their uni-
queness, transmitting a united vision of the
guiding thread of the whole Festival.
This year’s edition places a particularly
current theme at the centre of reflection, in
the light of happenings which, over these
last months, have turned the whole political
panorama of the Countries that look onto
the Mediterranean upside down.
It is a season of deep changes and must be
the prelude of a new phase. In the Mediter-
ranean area, for everyone.
The renewing strength is fully compliant
with the route that our region, because of
its geographical and cultural reasons, open
to the “mare nostrum”, has started over
these last two years.
This Campania intends following its own de-
velopment by enriching its artistic and lan-
dscape beauties above all. It is a Campania
that can count on being a protagonist with
its human capital, its youthful energies.
It is a Campania that is aiming at art to
show others a positive image that can
attract tourists and visitors from the other
areas of the Country and from abroad.
This is why the Region has always suppor-
ted Linea d’Ombra, sure of the continually

d’Ombra
Il festival che dirigo dalla sua nascita,
ammetto un po’ travagliata, ha scelto da
subito la strada dell’impegno, termine che
è stato messo fuori gioco per decenni,
quelli che abbiamo alle spalle. Abbiamo
The festival I have been managing since it
was created, I admit with a little difficulty,
immediately chose the road of commit-
ment, a term that has been unused for
those decades that lie behind us. We have
helped with, enjoyed and participated in, the
“resistible” rise of a sure pop culture that
has beaten cultural forms which enjoyed a
substantial self-reference and no longer dia-
logued with anyone, not even themselves. In
other words, end of the organic intellectual,
commitment to culture, no more politically
left rhetoric and the sure seriousness of
the political right. Finally free to love Totò,
but also Alvaro Vitali, to exalt Sergio Leone
(and how could we not) but also Antonio
Margheriti, and on each produce powerful
essays, never boring, that tell us how the
world bent to avan spettacolo (variety act
comics), speaking respectively of course. It
cannot be denied that it was a good thing,
but even if I look at this season that is about
to close, I get the idea that it has been follo-
wed by something bad for our society. We
have gained in lightness but lost in depth,
we have freed energies but forgotten stories
that appeared on our borders or distant
from us, we have delegated the duty of thin-
king for ourselves to a narrow group, we, a
social body in which the passion of virtue,
yes civil virtue, is slowly dying. If I look at
what comes out of the Linea d’Ombra festi-
val from our privileged point of view, I warn
you that we are paying for the twenty years
of silent waiting for redemption in terms
of quality; this redemption has now arrived
ritrovato richiamo alla serietà, all’impegno,
questi profondi cambiamenti.
abbiamo saputo suscitare.
with a rediscovered return to seriousness,
commitment, the need to enter into things
and once there think of new things that
should take us beyond the crisis, beyond the
unpleasant but real sensation of decaden-
ce. Our earthquakes, therefore, do not only
involve the Mediterranean populations, who
have lived a spring that still has not yielded
its fruit, but all of us even on this side of
the sea. There is not just one sector of the
spectacle and of art that is not changing
seriously, there is no piece of society that is
not redefining its own values and role in col-
lectivism, often summing up with the widest
horizons of waiting. Art – the art we have
loved over these last seventeen years – can
only record these deep changes. Cinema,
performing arts, music written as one, on or
off a network, in and beyond the Web, give
shape to the anxiety of our time but they
already announce the new that will come.
It is a question of knowing how to listen. If
a personal consideration is permitted, this
earthquake also involves me and I feel that it
is necessary to rethink our cultural work for
the city that hosts us and for the intervals
we have given rise to.

Le opere e i giorniWorks and days
dell’immagine. La quale immagine, a guar-
dar bene, arriva, orami, troppo tardi e non
ha più quella leggerezza che la rendeva
trasversale a culture, classi, paesi.
forma.
I am convinced that the cinema, more than
any other media, can read and scrutinise
the present and highlight the imperceptible
strands that push us towards the future.
Or rather, it could. Throughout the past
decades (and hopefully this is not deter-
mined by a personal condition of mine, an
intimate dissatisfaction on the nature of the
visual in contemporary cinema), the cinema
has been losing the advantage it had over
other media and means of communication,
that of producing and perfecting the image.
This image, if you look carefully, is arriving
almost too late, and it no longer has that
lightness that allowed it to cross cultural,
class and geographical borders. We are now
in transit, and only time will tell what kind
of cinema we will still watch, not in our own
homes but in a shared public space.
However, in this not particularly inspiring
phase of cinematographic history (even
American film is for once following suit, or
even falling further behind) there are both
small- and large-scale films which can still
present scenarios and tell us about the
present, and, better still, get it into shape
and give it a form. The Greek director Babis
Makridis’ film L seems, in the paradoxical
joke it portrays, to be an extraordinary
metaphor for the present condition of his
country, combining crisis and rebirth, despe-
ration and hope. The fractured and reflec-
tive viewpoint of those who live in Europe
but have roots elsewhere, and so connect
these two elements, could not be omitted
- Kuma by Umut Dag is a story of women
ti.
Gira
massacri contro i curdi.
PdA
enclosed by conflicting feelings. In essence
it is the women themselves who present a
new vision, both from behind and in front of
the camera. The bodies and emotions they
carry allow them to get deeper inside the
present, to grasp the essential elements of
a time that seems to be able to do without.
Around these cruxes of life circles Liz, the
heroine of John McIlduff’s Behold the Lamb,
a story of running away that can only end in
trying to return to the beginning, to mother.
The same is true of the paradoxical narrative
of A Moi Seule by the Frenchman Frédéric
Videau, with a young girl who grows up in
captivity but transforms her evident fragility
into force, until she finds herself in a solitary
freedom. Spain is a stylistic exercise by Anja
Salomonowitz, who mixes up stories wi-
thout losing either the thread or the voices
and the faces of the main characters, as if
to confirm that it is this that makes up the
story, and history in general. Sometimes, as
in the case of Future Lasts Forever (Gelesek
uzun sürer) by Turkish director Özcan
Alper, small stories of men and women are
woven into the big picture of history and
its forgotten tragedies, like the massacre of
the Kurdish people. Once more, and not by
chance, it is a woman who weaves together
the strands of memory.

scomparsa. E’ lei. Otto anni prima, infatti,
Gaëlle era stata rapita e tenuta isolata dal
mondo. Un’esperienza traumatica con cui
dovrà imparare a convivere, mentre cerca
di adattarsi a una libertà. Il film riporta lo
spettatore indietro nel tempo per farlo
partecipare alla lotta per la sopravvivenza
della piccola protagonista, chiusa in una
cella sotterranea senza finestre, in attesa di
vedere il suo rapitore. Con l’uomo che l’ha
rapita, lei finisce per stabilire una relazione
singolare, di sottomissione e di potere, di
paura e di attesa, fino all’epilogo.

film takes the viewer back in time, allowing
you to join the small protagonist’s fight for
survival, shut in an underground cell without
windows, waiting to see her kidnapper. She
ends up forming an extraordinary rela-
tionship with the man that kidnapped her, a
relationship of submission and power, fear
and waiting, right through to the epilogue.
Born in Angulême, France in 1964, Frédéric

bakir, a town in south-east Turkey mainly

the bloody oppression, and she is forced
to tackle her own past. Her companion left

returned, and the people she meets during
her journey cannot heal her deep wounds.
Not even Ahmet, with whom she has a brief
relationship, can free her from the past. The
young man cannot understand what Suma-
ru is searching for in that desolate village in
Hakkâri province on the Iraqi border, what it
is in her past that takes her to that particu-

The driver, who we know as the man, gives

I Terremoti CortiShort Earthquakes
Movi-
traggi in concorso quest’anno.
Terremoti come movimenti di popoli. Quelli
origini, ricordi, quelli raccontati in Baggage
The CortoEuropa competition, as people
who have followed us for a while will know,
does not have a set theme. However, every
year, hoping to disentangle myself from
watching hundreds of European short films,
trying to put together the best possible
selection and find a guideline that creates
a smooth, palatable journey for the public,
I inevitably and unwittingly stumble upon
the overarching topic that we chose many
months previously, long before the pro-
gramme had taken shape.
Earth/quakes, meaning movement, are
therefore the undisputed heroes of the se-
venteenth CortoEuropa festival. Movement
in its widest variety of forms, which we have
collected and boiled down into the selection
of twenty-five short films competing this
year. Earthquakes as movements of peoples.
Those who abandon their own land, which
does not satisfy them or feed them, to go in
search of a better life, which very frequently,
as in the case of the hero of Einspruch II,
does not meet expectations. This is a move-
ment of peoples that is sometimes one-way,
but at other times comes with a return
ticket too, a journey back to origins and
memories, like those told in Danis Tanovic’s
Baggage, which whilst distant still manage
to wound you with atrocious violence when
you immerse yourself in them again.
Earthquakes as movements of ideas, like
those seen in La France qui se lève tôt and
Cluck. Those of the people who lift up their
heads to shout or to sing with all their heart
that they cannot bear it, that they disagree.
Terremoti anche come ritmo, quello per-
cussivo e scherzoso di Music for one x-mas,
quello musicale de L’attaque du monstre
geant seceur de cerveax de l’espace!! o
dell’operetta rivisitata in chiave grottesca
Gianni Schicchi. Poi ci sono terremoti più
intimi, i piccoli terremoti che sconvolgono
il quotidiano, l’ordinario.. Terremoti del
cuore, perso fra sentimenti confusi, come
quelli Small circle of attention, El trayec-
to o Two hearts. Terremoti che segnano
irrimediabilmente particolari momenti
della vita, come l’infanzia (Dear Lenin and
Freddy, Jam Today, The first cut), l’adole-
scenza (Oz), o l’eta avanzata (Washed up
love, Tuba Atlantic). Non potevano infine
mancare nell’edizione 2012 i terremoti fan-
tastici.
popolare Armageddon, o l’improbabile tesi
quest’anno.
Luca Granato
Often one is sufficient, as that one person is
joined by others in greater and greater num-
bers, people who come together to support
the idea of justice and equality.
Earthquakes as rhythm, whether percussive
and joking as in Music for one X-mas, or mu-
sical like L’Attaque du monstre geant seceur
de cerveax de l’espace!! or Gianni Schicchi’s
grotesque revisiting of operetta.
Then there are more intimate earthquakes,
the small earthquakes that turn daily life
and the ordinary upside-down... Earthqua-
kes of the heart, lost in confused feelings,
as in Small circle of attention, El trayecto
or Two hearts. Earthquakes that leave an
eternal mark on particular moments in life,
such as childhood (Dear Lenin and Freddy,
Jam Today and The first cut), adolescence
(Oz), or old age (Washed up love and Tuba
Atlantic). Finally, the 2012 festival could not
be without fantasy earthquakes. Short films
that hypothesise catastrophic events, like
Armadingen which examines the incumbent
threat of an Earth-bound asteroid, from
a different point of view than the better-
known Armageddon, or the improbable
theory that tomatoes will cause the end of
world in the mockumentary Tomatl.
I will therefore leave you to watch these
short earthquakes in the hope that they will
shake you as they shook me, and that once
the showing is over they will allow you think
hard about this year’s overarching topic,
and perhaps debate it a little.

Fuori concorso. Mai fuori contestoNon-competing. Never out of context
Duemiladodici, la fine del mondo. Previ-
sioni e premonizioni, veggenti e catastrofi.
Superstizione.
La soluzione? Un’altra terra, Another Earth,
scientifico verso i nuovi orizzonti? Forse,
finché ci accorgeremo che le differenze poi
non sono così marcate.
Duemiladodici la fine di un mondo. Affer-
mazione molto più reale della precedente,
visibile intorno, concreta, tangibile.
politicamente definito, socialmente diso-
mogeneo e culturalmente poco impegna-
to.
accanto.
Poi all’improvviso i Terre/moti. Violenti e
metaforica catastrofe.
and premonitions, prophets and catastro-
phes. Superstition.
So what is the solution? Another Earth, an
unknown, identical planet that gives us a
second chance? A sci-fi journey towards
new horizons? Perhaps, until we realise that
the differences were not as clear as they
seemed.
It is much more realistic to say that twenty-
twelve marks the end of a world. This is
visible all around us, solid and tangible.
The coming months will not be our last on
this planet. The prophecy of various untru-
stworthy bards will not come to pass. Howe-
ver, these months will not be like the rest.
It may not be the year that marks the end of
everything (luckily for us), but it is certainly
the year that marks the end of what we
were accustomed to, of a world defined
by politics, socially diverse and with little
care for culture. The end of the world that
saw a foreigner as distant, commitment as
unnecessary, and one’s own back garden as
being greener and safer than the rest.
Then all of a sudden come the Earth/qua-
kes. Violent and destructive, the sense of
community crumbles, fault lines appear in
everyday life, and tidal waves of civic con-
science rise up.
Not far from our familiar European context,
pushing against the coastline of the almost
enclosed Mediterranean Sea, we see the
consequences of this metaphorical catastro-
phe.
On the other shore, where every day dozens
of souls full of hope and fear are shipwre-
ci vengono raccontati da No more fear.
Partendo dal seme della Primavera Araba
a Sidi Buazid, conosceremo la protesta che
cresce, la sensazione del suo propagarsi e
l’entusiasmo di chi l’ha condotta. Affac-
do. Sfileremo accanto alle donne tunisine,
faremo parte del popolo di Hymen Natio-
nal che chiede giustizia contro pratiche
umilianti e maschiliste.
guardarsi allo specchio e scoprirsi uguali

cked, people overcome their fright and
realise the power of taking to the streets.
No more fear tells us about movements of
people and people on the move. Star-
ting from the seed of the Arab Spring in
Sidi Bouzid, we get to know the growing
protest, the feeling of its spread and the
enthusiasm that propels it along. Staring
out of the window with the young artists in
Normal!, we watch the street to try to better
understand what is happening, to question
the role of culture within the wave that is
in motion, before deciding that staying still
is impossible, and heading out to join the
marchers. We parade next to Tunisian wo-
men, and join the people of Hymen National
who want justice in the face of humiliating,
chauvinist practices.
We speak with people who have lived
through these events to allow a comparison,
stimulating the brain and aiding understan-
ding. Looking in the mirror and finding that
you are the same as someone you thought
different not only makes you aware, it helps
you grow up. It matters little whether it co-
mes through science fiction, documentary,
testimony or the most realistic of fiction. All
you have to do is open your eyes to see that
other worlds are possible.

All’inizio della Primavera Araba in Tunisia
conflitto politico e artistico.
At the beginning of the Arab Spring in
Tunisia and Egypt, Fouzi invites the group
of actors he filmed a documentary with two
years previously to watch the result of their
joint project. His film tackled the disillu-
sionment and the difficulties in expressing
ideas facing the young generations of Alge-
rian artists, but now Fouzi is searching for a
different end to the story. By watching the
reactions of his actors in front of the screen,
he understands that an epic change is un-
folding in the country. Allouache shows us
a vision of new generations of Algerians in
the middle of a conflict that is both political
and artistic. Continually switching between
reality and fiction, we ask ourselves what
role art has, how to deal with censorship
and how to withstand this time of funda-
mental change.

La ricostruzione chirurgica dell’imene sta
diventando pratica comune in Tunisia.

Hymen reconstruction surgery is becoming
common practice in Tunisia. Although the
country is considered a model of moderni-
ty and development throughout the Arab
world, requiring proof of a bride’s virginity is
still accepted as normal. This is the private
story of some women facing this problem,
often without any choice in the matter.
Born in 1964, Jamel Mokni studied Science in
Tunisia. He was arrested during a political de-
monstration, but received a presidential par-
don in 1990, and moved to Belgium. There he
graduated in Cinema and worked for various
television channels. He founded the produc-
tion house “A Bout de Souffle Production” in
1999, through which he produced his films,
“Hymen National” and “Tais-toi et Parle”.
The Arab Spring begins on a street in
the Tunisian city of Sidi Bouzid, when the
twenty-six year old Mohamed Bouazizi sets
himself on fire as a protest against the local
police. From that starting point the revolu-
tion spreads like a wave, sweeping over the
Arab world and the whole planet. No more
fear bears witness to the revolution and tells
the story of its main protagonists.
Mourad Ben Cheikh studied art, cinema
and drama in Tunisia and Bologna. His
first feature-length documentary “Mare
Nostrum” was produced in 2007, following
on from “Mediterranean Tales”, a series in

L’animazione in movimentoAnimation in movement
In un’edizione dedicata al movimento an-
che il cortometraggio e la video installazio-
ne diventano nomadi e migrano dalla sala
cinematografica ad uno spazio di proie-
zione itinerante.
Tutti
possono salire a bordo di questa piccola
sala “nomade” ed assistere, per il tempo
che desiderano, alla proiezione loop di un
accurata selezione delle migliori animazio-
ni realizzate tra il 2010 e 2012.
Ogni giorno una programmazione diversa:
cartoon, microstorie di finzione, videoclip
musicali o esperimenti visivi e visionari, re-
stimolante.

In a festival dedicated to movement, short
film and video installation become noma-
dic themselves, migrating from the cinema
theatre to an itinerant projection space. The
project has been created in collaboration
with Cinemamabile, a small “van/cinema”
that travels from one end of the city to the
other, stopping at strategic points within
the historic centre. Anyone can get aboard
this small “nomad” and watch the looped
projection of a careful selection of the best
animations produced between 2010 and
2012, for as long as they like.
Every day will have a different schedule:
cartoons, mini fictional works, music videos
or visual and visionary experiments, produ-
ced using the widest possible range of ani-
mation techniques, from visual draw to stop
motion, from 3D to pixillation. Small creative
masterpieces, only a few minutes in length,
but extremely powerful and stimulating.

Festival, saranno visionati dai partecipanti
ed il Cinema Metropol di Cava de’ Tirreni;
• ScuolaDOC: si propone di portare il
cinema direttamente “dentro” la scuola at-
traverso la proiezione di documentari negli
istituti scolastici di appartenenza.
Luigi Marmo
Linea d’Ombra - Festival Culture Giovani
has always dedicated a special place to the
Campania Region high schools, which are
called to take part in Progetto Scuola: the
selection of feature films and documentari-
es with the presence of guests, connected
with the theme of the selected works, which
comment on their work and go further into
the festival theme. The aim of the project
is to educate young people on how to
become informed spectators, increase their
aesthetic sensitivity and their ability to
criticise. Making use of the power of films
to create a dialogue with young people and
supply them with useful instruments for
their training are the objectives of Progetto
Scuola.
Training this year includes:
• Scuola al cinema (School at the cine-
ma): three films, selected by a group of
experts and tied to the Festival theme, will
be shown to the participants over three
mornings at the Teatro delle Arti and the
Cinema Teatro Augusteo in Salerno, the Sala
Roma in Nocera Inferiore and the Cinema
Metropol in Cava de’ Tirreni;
• ScuolaDOC: the proposal is to take film
directly “inside” schools by projecting docu-
mentaries in local schools.

L’arte è rivoltaArt is revolt
La declinazione del tema festivaliero “Ter-
re-Moti: movimento di popoli e di idee”,
nella sezione performing-art, si snoda a
partire da una citazione di Lucio Amelio:
“sopra nuove e vecchie macerie il nostro
Terrae Motus ha ricostruito una nuova idea
dell’arte per gli anni a venire. Un’idea di
partecipazione morale, civile e politica”.
Le parole di Amelio tratteggiano sapiente-
mente il nostro contemporaneo e stimola-
no alcuni interrogativi: l’arte è rivolta?
assenso, singolare e universale, individuo e
The declination of the festival theme
“Terre-Moti: movimento di popoli e di idee”
(EarthQuakes: movement of people and ide-
as) in the performing arts section, unwinds
from a quotation by Lucio Amelio: “above
new and old rubble our Terrae Motus has re-
constructed a new idea of art for the years
to come. An idea of moral, civil and political
participation”.
The words of Amelio knowledgeably outline
our contemporary and stimulate the que-
stion: is art rebellious?
Albert Camus, in his book “L’uomo in Ri-
volta” (The Rebel), proposes a relationship
between, art, rebellion and society that
is particularly stimulating: In art, rebellion
comes true and endures in true creation,
not in criticism or comment. [...]. But art
and society, creation and rebellion must, for
this reason, find the source of the rebellion
that balances refusal and assent, singular
and universal, individual and history in the
strongest tension. Rebellion is not in itself
an element of civilisation. But it is placed
before each civilisation. [...]
In order to investigate the theme of the
seventeenth edition of Linea d’Ombra
– Festival delle Culture Giovani (Line of
Shade – Youth Culture Festival) through the
representation arts, we invited a wide range
of artists who are immersed in and compro-
mised by contemporary tension.
Emma Dante and her company Sud Costa
Occidentale present Acquasanta (Holy wa-
ter), the first chapter of “La trilogia degli oc-
chiali” (The spectacles trilogy) which, with a
teatro, una rivolta a partire dall’umanità e
dalla sincerità.
Ciò che ci raccontano Ricci-Forte è una
spregiudicata quanto lucida disamina del
presente, capace di mascherare i mecca-
nismi delle fiabe che ci raccontiamo ogni
giorno per sopravvivere all’urto delle quo-
tidiane violenze.
Agostino Riitano
glimpse towards the abandoned areas and
dark spaces of our time, tries to rebel in the
space and time of the theatre, starting from
humanity and sincerity.
What Ricci-Forte tell us is an unbiased and
clear examination of the present, able to
mask the mechanisms of the tales we tell
each other every day to survive the shock of
daily violence.
Furie de Sanghe, literally Cerebral Hae-
morrhage, is the title of the show by the
Fibre Parallele company, but it is also a
thought, a worm, a large eel that grows
in the head, becomes powerful, nervously
restless, looks for a way out.
Aldo Morto / tragedy by Daniele Timpano
sees the actor who was born in the 70s on
the stage; he has no personal memory of
those years but, starting from the kidnap-
ping of Aldo Moro, he makes the audience
relive an epochal shock that conditioned the
collective imagination of our country.
Alessandra Asuni, reconstructing an antique
ritual, allows a Sardinian woman who usually
remains hidden to be reborn. Accabadora,
the female angel of mercy who helps bring
into the world but who also closes a life that
had become unbearable. The section also
hosts street theatre staging, opening the fe-
stival to the “nouveau cirque”: Il Karamazov
Furioso by and with the Posteggiatori Tristi,
PLAY YOUR BLUES by and with Lucignolo,
Napoletana by and with O’Capitan.

rivela a chi desidera incontrarla.
superstizioni e miti atavici, difficilmente
comprensibile ai nostri tempi, ma perfet-
tamente integrata nella concezione della
morte propria degli antenati sardi.
Le ultime testimonianze relative all’esisten-
za dell’accabbadora riguardano il paese di
Orgosolo e risalgono addirittura all’anno

still today shows itself to whoever wants to
meet it.
The figure of the angel of mercy is part
of a primordial and pre-Christian regional
religion, the roots of which are implanted
in atavic superstitions and myths, difficult
to understand today, but perfectly integra-
ted into the concept of death of Sardinian
ancestors.
The last testimonies of the existence of the
angel of mercy can be found in Orgosolo
and date back to 1952: “the last female
angel of mercy, which helped a 70-year-old
man die, was the town’s obstetrician. The
woman who helped bring people into the
world was the same person who closed a
life that had become unbearable.”

breathing and ‘o Spicchiato relives aban-

leaving him alone and cold on the wharf of a

Consistently waiting, however, the cabin boy
becomes wood, like the figurehead of an old

Il Karamazov Furioso The Furious Karamazov
posteggia. Riusciranno i suoi inseparabili
gera ironia e allegre canzoni napoletane.
Quarantacinque minuti di musica e diverti-
mento, con un finale tutto da scoprire.

Grimmless è la fiaba. Fiaba come transizio-
ne infantile verso l’età adulta. Fiaba come
desideri, aspettative e frustrazioni pronte a
fratelli Grimm. Non hanno lieto fine.

Grimmless is the fairy tale. A fairy tale like the
childish transition towards adulthood. A fairy
tale like a steel lung for supporting, as a grown
up, daily life that is sharper than any wicked
stepmother’s nails. Fairy tales for grandpa-
rents and grandchildren, each one with its own
baggage of desires, expectations and frustra-
tions ready to fly towards the materialisation
of needs. Which does not always happen. Be-
cause our days are not written by the Brothers
Grimm. They do not have a happy ending.

ment. With scenic knowledge and niceness, ‘O
Capitano leads the public in a game in which
it becomes protagonist. With the pretext of

he prepares the field for Pulcinella, who he

Falco, Raffaele Natale e Antonino Talamo.
lezza umana, de-generando in un viaggio
metafisico ironico onirico. I testi dei mo-
nologhi scelti accompagnano la traversata
“transonirica”.
costruire richiami pronti a far nascere dubbi.

The group is made up of the actor-singer
Peppe Papa, and three musicians, Alberto
Falco, Raffaele Natale and Antonino Talamo.
The trigger event, which is also the leitmotif of
the show, is awareness of the conditioning of
which human beings are victims. The quartet
sets its scene on an imaginary galleon and
proposes crossing the dark sea of human
awareness, degenerating in a metaphysical,
ironic and oneiric journey. The texts of both
the selected monologues and songs accom-
pany the “transoneiric” crossing. The musical
repertory moves from the 20s to the 70s but
it brings forth a message of union between
assimilable, in which irony takes on the main
function of constructing references, never an
end in themselves but ready to create doubt.

ba.
notte salernitana. Un’idea nata per avvi-
cinare al festival nuove fasce di pubblico,
ma anche la disponibilità del Festival a
essere attraversato dalle tendenze e dalle
pratiche dell’intrattenimento giovanile.
Agostino Riitano
The city of Salerno is alive, with a bright life
to dive into. For some years the Historical
Centre has been a true open-air enter-
tainment pole, with an immeasurable quan-
tity of premises in the roads and squares.
From Thursday to Sunday a multitude of
young people spill onto the roads between
Via Roma and the adjacent roads in Largo
Campo, moving from one place to ano-
ther until dawn. The idea of Club Festival
begins precisely from the observance of
this phenomenon. Club Festival is the new
proposal for after-festival activities, and also
what directs Festival movement towards
the Salerno night clubbers. It is an idea that
was created to move new bands of public
towards the festival, but also to make the
Festival available for the tendencies and
practices of young entertainment. The Club
Festival programme does not close in any
specialism and tries to read the tendencies
and phenomena of Italian and European
clubbing.

mondo. Ideata da Mario Tronco, e prodot-
ta da Apollo 11, l’Orchestra rappresenta
un’esperienza forse unica al mondo, che

To save the historical Apollo cinema in
Rome from being turned into a Bingo hall,
and transform it instead into an internatio-
nal laboratory of cinema, music and writing,
the concept of creating an Orchestra
was idealised, made up of around twenty
musicians coming from different countries
and cultures, all with their own individual
instruments and baggage of popular
music, in a blend of culture and tradition,
memories, old and new sonority, unknown
musical instruments, magically universal
melodies, voices from the world. Idealised
by Mario Tronco and produced by Apollo
11, the Orchestra represents an experience
that is probably unique in the world and
fieri.
pubblicazioni monografiche e convegni.
comprendere quanto possano felicemente
that gives Italy a prize to be proud of. This
project, which has gathered the enthusia-
sm of thousands of supporters, slowly but
surely caught the interest of the media, and
not just national, as well as the attention of
teachers and university researchers who
study its development, dedicating mono-
graphic publications and conventions to it.
The Orchestra di Piazza Vittorio represents
a unique European reality. It is the first and
only orchestra born from the self-taxation of
some citizens who created jobs and relative
immigrant visas for excellent musicians
coming from all over the world and now our
fellow-citizens. These musicians bring the
testimony of different music, culture and
religion. It is enough to see them, all toge-
ther on the stage, to understand how they
happily incarnate a message of brotherhood
and peace that is much more efficient than
declarations, rallies and television debates.
Beyond the political and social values, ho-
wever, the Orchestra carries a strong, purely
musical and artistic content with a value
that is practically unique.
The Orchestra promotes the research and
integration of different musical repertories
that are often unknown to the Italian public,
creating a means of recovery and liberation
for foreign musicians who live in Rome, at
times in conditions of cultural and social
alienation.

come quello del minimalismo, della classica

Vincenzo VasiTheremin Solo
Vincenzo Vasi. Polistrumentista, composito-
re versatile e dallo stile surreale.
It is an unrepeatable occasion for becoming
familiar with the various facets of the most
mysterious instrument in the history of
music, the ancestor of the modern synth,
but astounding because it is played without
touching it, by interaction with magnetic
fields. It is an instrument that produces an
indefinite and unclassifiable sound, similar
to a human voice, the violin or cello, but
able to blend with other instruments. What
makes the performance truly interesting,
however, is that the theremin is played by
one of its most famous interpreters in the
European panorama, Vincenzo Vasi. Multi-
instrumentalist, versatile composer with a
surreal style.

TerreMoti: scritture al confineEarthQuakes: writing on a border
domanda mi sorge spontanea pensando a
quando stia cambiato il mondo, in epoca
d’internet e di comunicazione digitale,
di quanto il nostro cervello abbia dovuto
adattarsi - fortunatamente è plastico, an-
Leggiamo, ascoltiamo
musica, facciamo un videogioco, mentre
inviamo qualche sms o twittiamo, riempia-
mo qualche riga su Facebook corredate da
un piccolo filmato, il tutto contemporanea-
mente.
sarà disponibile in formato digitale e dun-
Have we reached an historic turning point
in the field of writing and narrative, or
simply a period of adjustment without too
many disasters? This question came to me
spontaneously when I was thinking about
the extent to which the world has changed,
in an era of Internet and digital communi-
cation. The amount our brains have had to
adapt in response to the constant stream of
stimuli they receive from the new media –
they may not be able to expand, but at least
our brains are flexible. We read, listen to mu-
sic, play a game, send some text messages
or tweets, write a few lines on Facebook
with a short video attached, and all at the
same time. Most of our online experiences
are over in a few seconds, jumping from one
page to another until we find what we were
looking for. And even then we quickly skim
through the text to extract the information
we require. Prompt, speedy and nimble.
Leaving the feeling that, if the medium is
the message, the book, literature’s medium
par excellence, may perhaps have to change
its nature. Obviously I’m not talking about
eBooks, the fact that some of the texts will
be available in a digital format and therefore
will become malleable and relatively free
- navigable by anyone who wants to turn
them into something resembling an old mix
tape: plenty of Foster Wallace with a small
dose of Foer and a hint of Franzen, and, for
the sake of originality, all enclosed within a
storyline by Manzoni. As interesting as it is
to read old novels on the Kindle or iPad (it
goes without saying that old here is used
nativi digitali cosa scriveranno e come?
premi letterari e qualche gelosia; dall’altra,
testi virtuali, supporti elettronici, nuovi
o addirittura oltre. Forse, però...
PdA
with love and respect) it will not change
their nature. But what will new writers write,
whether novices in the new era or digital na-
tives, and how? It could be a good topic for
a new Recherche, if anyone would bother
to read it.
Writing, and writers, therefore seem to
me to be on a border. On one side is the
well-known and (mostly) well-loved land
of traditional publishing, with its reviews,
leading critics, strong and weak readers,
literary prizes and a smattering of jealousy.
On the other side are virtual texts, electronic
formats, new (mostly) distracted readers,
unknown online critics (we’re learning from
the cinema, alas) and some ancient jealousy.
I am sure that new forms of writing will be
born, authors renewing the millennia-old
history of storytelling, expanding the limits
of what can be said, and equalling or even
surpassing Thomas Mann. On the other
hand, however...

finalista al Premio Selezione Campiello,
sarà seguito da “Mia suocera beve” (2010),
e, nel 2011, da “Sono contrario ai sentimen-

pubblicata con i testi teatrali di Valeria
Parrella e Antonio Pascale nel volume “Tre
terzi”. Suoi racconti sono apparsi nelle
antologie “Disertori”, “Crimini” e “Crimini

È uno scrittore e giornalista, nato a Roma
nel 1975. Giovanissimo si è trasferito in
un paese della provincia di Cuneo. Oggi
vive a Torino. Il suo primo romanzo è del
2002, “Morto un papa”. L’anno successivo

italiani. “Ogni promessa” è il suo ultimo
lavoro pubblicato nel del 2010 e vincitore
del premio Bagutta.

was released in 2005, marked the beginning
of Bajani’s collaboration with the publisher
Einaudi and his interest in the world of work.
This was also the topic for his 2006 report
“Mi spezzo ma non m’impiego”, a look at
several shocking stories from the world of
temporary employment. He confirmed his
interest in young people with “Domani niente

Antonio PascaleScrittore / Writer
Nato a Napoli nel 1966. Giornalista e
Esordisce come
In
Silva e Valeria Parrella, pubblicato sempre
da Einaudi nel 2009, Pascale costruisce un
ritratto amaro della Napoli che dilapida le
proprie risorse. Scrive “Trent’anni nell’Italia
senza stile” nel 2010 e “Democrazia: cosa
può fare uno scrittore?” nel 2011.
Antonio Pascale was born in Naples in

L’imma-
gine, ancora, ha una leggerezza che mai
prima d’ora, circola in piccoli maneggevoli
dispositivi ed è ovunque in presa diretta. A
The topic Earthquakes: movement of people
and ideas has followed us for many months
now. We have seen it in the events in North
Africa, in the emergence of a renewed
women’s movement and in the technolo-
gical innovations that dictate the way we
communicate. Each of these has confirmed
the feeling that led us to our choice - the
fact that we live in an age bordering on
something new and unknown, the signs of
which are already visible, but which cannot
yet be fully interpreted. We do not know the
outcome of the bottom-up revolutions in
the Mediterranean countries, where young
people have risen up, wanting to be prota-
gonists on the international scene with the
same rights and dignity as everyone else.
However, we do know that these revolutions
have triggered a process that cannot be
ignored, and this includes the field of public
communication and, similarly, cinema. The
image no longer follows events; it seems
to determine them, avoiding the snares
of censorship, and sometimes displaying
something false to uncover the truth. Fur-
thermore, the image has a certain nimble-
ness - more than ever before, it is circulated
through small portable devices and is
filmed live everywhere. We have dedicated
a meeting to this topic and its political and
cultural implications, attended by directors
and experts who were part of the Arab
Spring and chaired by Gianni Canova.
Another breath of fresh air was the female
world finding its voice once more, and not
just in Italy. The women’s movement, or the
mondo dell’arte e dello spettacolo. Niente
streghe, solo donne. Donatella Finocchiaro,
Carlotta Natoli e Carlotta Tesconi dialoghe-
I work-shop, affidati
confermano quanto dicevamo: facciamo ap-
uomini sotto sopra.
PdA
other half of the sky, as once was said with
a certain rhetorical emphasis, felt the need
to remind those who had forgotten it or
wanted to hide it that it existed, that it had
not forgotten itself or the battles won over
the years. To show that it had not strayed
from the road of liberation, in all possible
senses of the word: at work, in society,
professionally, politically, and in the world
of art and entertainment. No witches, only
women. Donatella Finocchiaro, Carlotta
Natoli and Carlotta Tesconi will talk with
us and amongst themselves to help us to
understand the life of today’s women both
on- and off-screen.
The financial crisis and its implications in
this part of Europe seem to require not a re-
duction of costs, a lowering of expectations,
a drop in quality of life (no matter how
much we ‘make do’, it doesn’t make life any
easier), but rather an injection of creativity,
and therefore a plea to culture. Without re-
search, knowledge, training and innovation
cities fall into ruin, their social life implodes,
the battles won in the past are wasted and
their story, made up of houses, streets and
apartments, of social life and a community
way of living, can decline in a slow sunset.
The workshops, run by Giulio Mozzi (“multi-
ple narratives”) and Saul Saguatti (live ani-
mation) confirm our earlier point: we turn to
creativity to turn human cities upside down,.

By Basmati - Saul Saguatti e Audrey CoÏaniz
Un programma concepito per unire le
esperienze creative e rappresentative in un
l’esperienza. In sintesi creare un gruppo di
lavoro che in maniera consequenziale possa
generare, un live multimediale della durata
variabile tra i 30 e 45 minuti, lasciando a
ogni partecipante un momento personale di
protagonismo.
This programme was created to combine
creative and representational experiences in
a single moment of synthesis, to draw and
depict, forming a visual memory of various
drawings, with the aim of creating anima-
tions on various levels that can be intermi-
xed, with all the hallmarks of live creation.
This is an experience open to anyone who
wants to express themselves through
creativity and prior experience, to which we
will add the basics of animation so you can
work with confidence! A collaborative film
will be produced, consisting of between 30
and 45 minutes of live animation, with every
participant having his or her own moment in
the spotlight.
SAUL SAGUATTI
internazionali.

Una città in rivolta / A City in revolt Condotto da Giulio Mozzi / By Giulio Mozzi
Il laboratorio propone ai partecipanti la
redazione (e pubblicazione istantanea in
dai partecipanti.
He was born in 1960, and lives in Padua.
He has published six collections of short sto-
ries (the most recent of which was “Sono
l’ultimo a scendere (e altre storie credibili)”,
published by Mondadori in 2009), a poem,
several research books, some teaching
materials for writing and storytelling (the
most successful of which is the “Ricettario di
scrittura creativa”, written with Stefano Bru-
gnolo and published by Zanichelli in 2000).
He is a consultant on Italian prose for Einaudi
Stile Libero, and works on the “Scuola d’au-
tore” project for the Provincial Institute of
Educational Research and Experimentation
in Trento. He has been running writing and
storytelling courses and seminars since 1993.
In 2010 he launched the Storytelling shop in
Milan. He has published the online reading
and writing bulletin “Vibrisse” since 2000.
GIULIO MOZZI
Giulio Mozzi è nato nel 1960. Abita a Pado-
va. Ha pubblicato sei raccolte di racconti (la
più recente è “Sono l’ultimo a scendere (e
altre storie credibili”, Mondadori 2009), un
poema, alcuni libri d’inchiesta, alcuni testi
scrittura creativa”, Zanichelli 2000, scritto
zione. Dal 2000 pubblica in rete “vibrisse”,
bollettino di letture e scritture.
This workshop offers participants the
opportunity to edit (and instantly publish
online) an assortment of texts relating to an
imaginary revolution in a fantasy city.
This will help to reinforce a variety of genres
and writing styles, and will experiment with
different forms of collective writing, or at
least writing that is not completely
individual. The issue of how to construct a
story will be dealt with (there will be a story,
perhaps even a love story),
within a lattice of unpredictable events. The
work will be accompanied by discussions on
narrative and stylistic choices, on
how to use imagination and construction,
and on how to interweave
the storylines and opinions of the partici-
pants.

Città, Cultura e SviluppoCity, Culture and Development
Occorre rilan-
novazione indispensabili all’economia della
conoscenza.
lanciare in campo nazionale e internaziona-
le un progetto ambizioso e innovativo.
Michele Rosco
Salerno needs a project for tourism and for
adding value to its culture from an econo-
mic development point of view. This project
must involve private operators and must be
placed before the Administration, not to re-
quest new public funds but to create a part-
nership. Reflections on how to add value to
culture in the City and how to create a valve
for economic development must be relaun-
ched. Culture must know how to attract
visitors without exhausting its development
strength in tourism. Culture is an economic
growth factor even because of its ability to
make the city pleasant and stimulating for
its inhabitants and new citizens, for its abi-
lity to add value to the immaterial elements
and innovation, essential for the knowledge
economy. The observations for constructing
a project must be presented with the aim of
creating long and short networks. We will
speak with national guests, who have great
experience in themes of cultural organi-
sation and city development in the 21st
century about long networks. The objective,
however, is to build a local network that can
connect Salerno workers, to exit from a pro-
vincial viewpoint and to launch an ambitious
and innovative project in a national field.

Uno sguardo. Un bacio. Una scelta. Un
incontro.
provocano alcun cambiamento significa-
tivo. Che non lasciano il segno. E poi ce
ne sono altre. Molte altre. Sono quelle che
quando arrivano te ne accorgi eccome. Ti
scuotono e ti cambiano. Ti attraversano.
Sono rivoluzioni dell’anima. Come dire.
Una mattina ti svegli e fai colazione col tuo
solito cappuccino, e magari proprio quella
mattina, assolutamente quella, ti scuoterà
per sempre. Quella mattina che scoprirai
il conforto di un abbraccio. Quella matti-
cola. Un racconto appeso nel vuoto. Quasi
lasciato lì a penzolare in attesa di cadere
nell’oblio. Eppure solido di emozioni. Che
sembra batterti dentro. Gli scatti saranno
firmati da Ilaria Smeriglio, studentessa del
Liceo Alfano I di Salerno. Un occhio giova-
ne, un cuore che trema.

A look. A kiss. A choice. A meeting. Each
day is an earthquake. Each day brings its
unstoppable dose of emotional tremors.
Some pass unobserved, without causing
any significant change. They do not leave
a mark. Yet there are others. Many others.
When they come, boy do you realise it. They
shake you and change you. They trample
over you. They are revolutions of the soul.
In a manner of speaking. One morning you
wake up and have your usual cappuccino,
and maybe that same morning, precisely
that one, you will be shaken forever. That
morning when you discover the comfort of
an embrace. That morning when tears will
scratch out a smile. That morning you will
visit “HeartQuake”, a photographic journey
idealised by Liceando Network to tell you
of earthquakes of the heart, young hearts,
using moments impressed on memory and
on film. A story that is suspended in space.
Left hanging, almost as if waiting to fall into
oblivion. Yet made solid by emotions. That
seem to strike you within. The snaps are
signed by Ilaria Smeriglio, a student from
the Liceo Alfano I in Salerno. A young eye, a
trembling heart.
