Jede Stimme wird von einer gleichen Anzahl von Celli gespielt. Bei einer Wiedergabe mit vier Cellisten wird jede

Stimme solistisch besetzt, bei acht Cellisten von zwei Celli ausgefUhrt. bei zw61f Cellisten von drei usw.

Bei den ersten beiden Takten von FRATRES gibt es drei unterschiedliche M6glichkeiten der AusfUhrung ad libitum:

a zu spielen wie notiert,

b eine der drei oberen Stimmen entfallt; z B. die zweite Stimme (pizzicato) pausiert,

c lwei der drei oberen Stimmen ~ n t f l l e n so dar.. nur eine der drei Stimmen erklingt; z. B. nur die dritte Stimme

(Schlage auf den Resonanzk6rperl.

Die gewahlte Art der Ausfuhrung gilt fUr aile analogen Takte am Beginn jeder Studierziffer und fur die beidenSchlur..takte.

Performance Instructions

Each of the four parts is to be played by the same number of 'celli. Thus, if four 'cellists are performing the work, each

part will be played by a solo ·cello. If eight 'celli sts are involved, the parts will be doubled. If twelve are playing, theparts will be trebled, and so on.

In the first two bars of FRATRES there are three different options ad libitum:

a play the music as notated;

b leave out one of the three upper parts; for instance, the second part (pizzicato) might be omitted;

c leave out two of the three upper parts, so that only one of the three parts is played; for instance, only the third part

(knocking on the soundboardl.

Whichever option is selected will likewise apply to all the analogous bars at the beginning of each number and to the

two closing bars.
