Papal Power Grows

1870 is the time papal Infallibility was proclaimed formally, but it had been practised for centuries. Shelley Ch 14, and Church Chronology – the Popes.

Matthew 16:13-19, Lk 22:31-32, Jn 21:15-17. The three key popes to build papal power were Damasus, Leo, and Gregory. They were men of their time, and men for their time! The Roman Church became pre-eminent through their work to save the people and the city.

The Rock is Christ!

The Rock and the Keys

Matthew 16:18-19 Peter’s role is to open the door to the

church. Acts 2:14ff – Peter opens the door and

all who repent and believe are saved, those who reject the truth will die and be judged, Rev 20:10-15.

Icons – windows into heaven?

Idolatry is condemned in scripture, but the Eastern believers started to produce images of saints and events, and use them to worship with. Note their beliefs, for they were genuine in desire to draw close to God in their experience – but they didn’t open the Word of God and hear, believe and apply it! Jn 3:3-18, 36, 6:28-35, 63, 1 Cor 2:14,

The Great Divide

Experience and worship – what saves us, or what makes us feel saved?

Idolatry
