CHARLEVOIX COUNTY —

With the 2014 Michigan High

School Baseball State champi-

ons crowned over the past

weekend, the spring sports sea-

son has officially drawn to a

close.

The Charlevoix Rayders put

together another outstanding

regular season, while the

Boyne City Ramblers hit their

stride just in time for the post-

season, advancing to the re-

gional finals before bowing out

to Gladstone, and with East Jor-

dan, Boyne Falls and Ellsworth

improving, next season looks

like there could be plenty of

wins for each program in the

Charlevoix County area.

After much deliberation,

watching the student-athletes

perform, examining all of the

nominations from the area

coaches, weighing the strength

of schedule, head-to-head

matchups and statistics, it has

been determined that Player of

the Year honors go to

Charlevoix junior Nate Moon.

Moon played shortstop as

well as pitched for the Rayders.

He played in 31 games, pounded

out 31 hits, including nine dou-

bles, a triple and three home

runs for a .368 batting average.

He also swiped 25 bases, scored

32 runs and added 32 runs bat-

ted in from the number three

spot in the Rayder batting

lineup.

“Nate had a great year for

us,” Charlevoix coach Allen

Telgenhof said. “Both on the

mound and at the plate.”

Nate also had an on-base per-

centage of .446; a slugging per-

centage of .579 and an on-base

plus slugging percentage of

1.025.

In 16 appearances on the

mound, Moon sported a 9-2

win/loss record and converted

his only save opportunity. He

worked 65 ⅓ innings, allowing

44 hits, 22 runs (only 10

earned) for a 1.071 earned run

average. Nate only allowed 36

walks and struck out 81 bat-

ters.

Joining Moon on the 2014

All-Area baseball “Dream

Team” in team order are fellow

Rayders; Noah Certa, Austin

Putman and Will Telgenhof;

Boyne City boasts Max Cuper,

Jordan Fair, Tanner Kruzel

and Derek Willis; Boyne Falls

is represented by Marcus Ma-

telski and Andrew Stevens;

East Jordan supplies a trio of

players in Tucker Alward,

Colin Petrie and Tim Schut;

CharlevoixNoah Certa, junior center-

fielder. Certa put together a

year that exceeded his second

team all-state selection season

from a year ago. Noah in-

creased his batting average to

.410 this season, finishing with

41 hits in 100 at-bats, including

17 doubles and 17 RBI’s from

his leadoff spot in the order.

Certa also stole 21 bases and

broke his own school record for

runs in a season (set last year)

with 39. Noah has also been se-

lected as second team All-State

for the 2014 season.

Coach Telgenhof credited

Noah with anchoring the out-

field defense with his play in

center.

Austin Putman, sophomore

infield/pitcher. Putman hit .422

for Charlevoix in the clean-up

spot, 38 hits in 90 at-bats.

Austin had 13 doubles, two

triples and three round-trip-

pers. He stole 26 bases, scored

37 runs and knocked in 34

RBI’s.

His on-base percentage was

.509, with a slugging percentage

of .711, good enough to earn

him second team All-State as an

infielder.

On the mound, Austin went 3-

1 in six appearances, allowing

19 hits, 13 runs (10 earned) in

19 ⅓ innings. He fanned 18 bat-

ters, while walking 11. He also

tossed a one-hitter in a Lake

Michigan Conference victory

over Elk Rapids.

Will Telgenhof, junior

catcher. Will led the Rayders

with a .448 batting average this

season, finishing one hit and

two RBI’s away from the

ing 11 doubles, a triple and a

for 41 on the regular season, in-

cluding four doubles, a triple

Max is credited by

Rambler coach Mark

Pontoni as being a solid

backstop behind the

plate.

Jordan Fair, senior out-

fielder. Jordan led Boyne

with eight outfield assists

from his centerfield posi-

tion. He also batted .333,

pounding out 16 hits in 48

trips to the plate.

He finished with 13

RBI’s and 13 stolen bases

and the Rambler faithful

saw his batting average

climb to .389 with run-

ners in scoring position.

Fair also spent some

time on the mound for

BC. He worked 22 in-

nings, going 1-0 with one

save and an ERA of 1.94,

while fanning 18 batters

and walking 13.

Tanner Kruzel, sopho-

more pitcher/third base-

man. Tanner came on

late in the season on the

mound and asserted him-

self as a go-to guy in big

game situations. He fin-

ished the regular season

with a 3-0 record, work-

ing 26 ⅓ innings, with an

ERA of 1.18, while strik-

ing out 38 batters.

Kruzel allowed 16 hits,

16 walks and 13 runs (five

earned) while on the hill.

At the plate Tanner fin-

ished with a .390 batting

average, going 16-for-41,

including four doubles,

scoring 19 runs and

adding eight RBI’s. He

also stole nine bases.

Derek Willis, sopho-

more pitcher/first base-

man. Derek was the

workhorse for the Ram-

blers this season, logging

39 innings on the mound.

He finished the regular

season with a 5-2 record,

allowing 12 runs (eight

earned) on 39 hits.

His ERA was 1.28 as he

fanned 39 batters and

only allowed seven walks.

Offensively Willis bat-

ted .380, pounding out 19

hits in 50 plate appear-

ances, adding nine RBI

and like his teammate

Fair, his average went up

to .389 with runners in

scoring position.

Boyne FallsMarcus Matelski, soph-

omore pitcher/shortstop.

The midfielder finished

with a batting average of

.376 and went 2-1 with 25

strikeouts on the mound

for the 7-3 Loggers.

Andrew Stevens, junior

pitcher/catcher. Andrew

led the Loggers with a

.427 batting average and

went 3-2 on the mound

this season.

He also threw out 10

runners trying to steal

from his place behind the

plate.

East JordanTucker Alward, junior

catcher. Tucker hit .303

for the Red Devils this

season. He legged out six

doubles and finished

with 18 RBI’s, while swip-

ing 19 bases.

Defensively, Alward

was credited by coach

Tom Reid Jr. as “A very

solid catcher with a bul-

let for an arm and has

nabbed over 50% of at-

tempted base stealers

this season.”

Colin Petrie, sopho-

more pitcher/infield. The

Red Devils ace was

matched up with those of

opposing staffs and fin-

ished with an 0-4 record.

Colin tossed 39 innings

for EJ, striking out 18

and issuing 17 bases on

balls and finishing the

year with a 2.51 earned

run average.

At the dish, Petrie hit

.275 and stole eight bases.

“He does an excellent

job keeping hitters off

balance and deserves

much better than the 0-4

record,” coach Reid Jr.

said.

Tim Schut, senior cen-

terfielder. The second

team All-State selection

from a year ago, Schut

batted .347 this season,

with six doubles and

three home runs. He stole

22 bases, scored 24 runs

and knocked in 32 RBI’s.

He was also credited by

coach Reid Jr. with hav-

ing a phenomenal arm

from his centerfield posi-

tion, leading the team

with six outfield assists.

EllsworthDiamond McPherson,

senior pitcher/catcher.

One of the leaders of the

Lancer ball club. Helped

lead the team to their

first win in three years

and sweep of a double

header in six to nine

years.

Diamond hit .333 for

Ellsworth and was a solid

wall behind the plate as

well as tossing over 10 in-

nings on the mound.

Nate Veldboom, senior

first baseman. Along

with McPherson, Nate

helped lead a young

Lancer squad by exam-

ple. Limited somewhat

by an elbow injury, Veld-

boom played first base

like it was his natural po-

sition with his vacuum

like glove.

Nate also hit .333 for

the Lancers.

Coach of the YearAllen Telgenhof,

Charlevoix.

It would be a tall task

for anyone to try and du-

plicate the season the

Charlevoix Rayders en-

joyed during the 2013

campaign, finishing with

an overall school record

of 27-3, including 14-0 in

the Lake Michigan Con-

ference, but coach Tel-

genhof and the 2014

Rayders were up for the

challenge.

“It was a different kind

of season with us being a

target all year since we

had such a successful

year last year. Some

teams threw their num-

ber two pitchers in game

one and vice versa look-

ing for a split against

us,” coach Telgenhof

said. “When some teams

beat us, they celebrated

like they had won the

seventh game of the

World Series. In short, it

was kind of like basket-

ball has been here for a

while.”

The Rayders finished

with 24 wins, which hap-

pens to be good enough

for second most in school

history, and along the

way Charlevoix put up

even better offensive

numbers in a few

catagories.

The 2014 Rayders set

new records of their own

this season, as they

scored more runs, with a

total of 294, stole 176

bases and recorded 71

doubles. They finished

the year with a team bat-

ting average of .349, just

shy of the season record

of .354.

“I would say the high-

lights included sweeping

Boyne City and East Jor-

dan, our county rivals, in

the regular season, in-

cluding a walk-off win

against Boyne,” coach

Telgenhof added. “An-

other was winning the

tourney at Whittemore-

Prescott, beating Hillman

who was ranked #4 in Di-

vision IV at the time, as

well as the hosts, who

went to the semifinals

last year and the region-

als this year.”

While this season

didn’t conclude the way

the team would have

liked, the Rayders are al-

ready looking forward to

next season, as they will

return the core group of

all-state players; Will Tel-

genhof, Noah Certa and

Austin Putman, along

with all-region and CC-

News Player of the Year

selection Nate Moon.

The All-Area “Dream

Team” is selected based

on coach nominations,

the student-athletes char-

acter, performance and

statistical data.

Chevrolet Traverse is one of

the 10 best family cars of 2014,

according to Edmunds.com and

Parents magazine. It is the sec-

ond consecutive year Traverse

made the list in the SUV cate-

gory.Criteria for consideration

included strong safety – Tra-

verse has a 5-star Overall Vehi-

cle Score for safety in U.S.

Government New Car Assess-

ment Program (NCAP) testing –

efficiency, value and style.

“Chevrolet is honored that the

Traverse is recognized for the

second consecutive year by the

experts at Edmunds.com and

Parents,” said Steve Majoros,

marketing director of Chevrolet

cars and crossovers. “Traverse’s

winning combination blends the

capability and roominess of a

traditional SUV with the attrib-

utes of a crossover, including a

car-like driving experience, low

step-in height and good effi-

ciency on the highway.”

The recognition adds to Tra-

verse’s accolades for the year. It

also was named one of Kelley

Blue Book’s 12 Best Family Cars

for 2014. Demand for Traverse is

up, too, with sales jumping 24

percent in May from year-ago

numbers for the month.

Traverse offers the segment’s

only Front Center Air Bag. This

available feature deploys from

the inboard side of the driver’s

seat and inflates between the

driver and front passenger, pro-

viding added protection for both

front occupants in side-impact

crashes.

Traverse also offers advanced

crash-avoidance technologies,

including forward collision alert

and lane departure warning

that use a camera and sensors to

alert the driver with visual cues

on the dashboard, as well as au-

dible signals.

Traverse’s standard 3.6L V-6

uses direct injection technology

to deliver up to 288 horsepower

(215 kW) and EPA-rated highway

fuel economy of 24 mpg. That’s

comparable with competitors’

SUVs and crossovers, many of

which cannot match Traverse’s

roominess or capability. When

properly equipped, it can tow up

to 5,200 pounds (2,358 kg). All-

wheel drive also is available.

Traverse is designed for fami-

lies, from easily cleanable seats

and multiple USB ports to an

available power liftgate and

available rear-seat entertain-

ment system. The second-row

seat comes with a pair of cap-

tain’s chairs or a three-passen-

ger bench. Each configuration

implements the SmartSlide fea-

ture that allows unobstructed

access to the third-row bench

seat with one hand, which

makes it easy for children to op-

erate.

The third-row seat can com-

fortably accommodate three

adult passengers and Traverse’s

24.4 cubic feet (691 liters) of

cargo room behind its third row

is the most storage space in the

segment. Chevrolet also sup-

ports Traverse owners with two

years/24,000 miles (whichever

comes first) of scheduled main-

tenance, which covers four oil

changes, tire rotation and a 27-

point inspection.

Traverse’s exterior design is

centered around its Chevrolet

heritage, with the classic gold

bowtie positioned on a three-bar

grille. Inside, premium materi-

als include soft-touch surfaces

on the instrument panel and

front door uppers, contrasting

stitching, chrome and silver ac-

cents and available blue ambient

lighting that glow throughout

the cabin. A center stack houses

illuminated climate controls and

showcases a 6.5-inch-diagonal

color touch radio with the avail-

able Chevrolet MyLink or

MyLink with navigation info-

tainment systems.

Enhanced connectivity and

convenience comes to the 2015

Traverse with Siri Eyes Free,

which enables iPhone 4S and

iPhone 5 users to access Siri via

steering wheel controls to check

calendar entries, have text mes-

sages read and respond to them,

place calls or call up music. An-

droid phone users can also use

the steering wheel controls to

access their phone’s voice recog-

nition features.

Enjoy living in northern elegance on beautiful large lot near Boyne City

by Jim akans

Situated on nearly one and

three-quarters acres just outside

the city limits of Boyne City,

this three-bedroom, bath-and-a-

half home offers true northern

elegance combined with contem-

porary style architecture.

The over 1,700 square foot

home has a wonderfully open in-

terior floor plan with highlights

that include gorgeous hardwood

floors, cathedral ceilings and a

row of glass doorwalls in the

main living and dining area that

frame spectacular outdoor

views. The rich wood interior

tones create a wonderful ambi-

ence of “northern living”

throughout the home.

This home also features an at-

tached two-and-a-half car

garage, full basement, paved

driveway, a large open deck

across the rear of the home and

even an in-ground sprinkler sys-

tem.

This wonderful home with

true northern elegance on a

large, scenic setting is located at

3097 Marshall Road near Boyne

City and it is listed at just

$163,500. For a more information

or to arrange a home tour, call

Lynda Christensen or William

Christensen at Lynda’s Real Es-

tate Service in Boyne City at 231-

During the real estate transaction

(especially if you’re a first-time

buyer), you’re hit with so many for-

eign terms, fees and requirements

your head spins. One of those

strange and unfamiliar costs is title

insurance. In most cases, borrowers

have no option—either you get title

insurance (among other require-

ments) or you don’t get a loan.

The lender says you need it, you

want the loan to go though, so you

buy title insurance. Great. So what is

title insurance?

When you buy a home you want to

make sure that the people selling it

actually have full and legal title. The

party who conducts closing will

check this out by going down to the

local property records office to re-

search the history of ownership.

But—and here’s the tricky part—

those records down at the property

office may be official, but they may

also be wrong. It’s also possible that

the person who does the title search

can make a mistake and also that im-

portant information may simply not

be recorded.

For instance, maybe a bill against

the property was not recorded or

some taxes were not been paid. Or,

suppose that 40 years ago the prop-

erty you want to purchase was

owned by Smith. Let’s also imagine

that Smith was a bigamist with an

extra spouse. Will this matter show

up on the local property records? Not

likely. Does the additional Smith

spouse have an ownership claim

against the property? That may only

be clear after a lot of legal wran-

gling—and if you lose, you could lose

the house.

There may be other odd and

bizarre claims as well. Was an owner

an alcoholic? Insane? A drug user? Is

there a contractor with a claim

against the property? Such issues

can “cloud” titles and neither

lenders nor owners want clouds.

One form of title insurance,

“lenders” coverage, is designed to

protect (who else?) your lender in

case of title problems. “Lenders”

coverage is required and generally

provides protection up to the origi-

nal mortgage amount—if you buy a

home for $300,000 and get a $250,000

mortgage, then $250,000 is as much

coverage as you can get with a

lender’s policy. If there’s a claim, the

title insurer will fight on your behalf

and if there’s a claim the policy will

pay off the loan if necessary. This is

good news for you because you won’t

owe the lender a dime if you lose in

court.

But there are also some options.

For instance, you can also get

“owners” coverage. This will protect

your equity—that $50,000 in the ex-

ample above not covered by the

lender’s policy. And you can often get

an “inflation rider” with an owner’s

policy—as the value of your home

goes up, so does the value of your

title coverage.

While title insurance is required

by virtually all lenders, there is one

big exception: Loans made in Iowa.

In Iowa, the state says that attorneys

and others who do title work must

participate in a title guarantee pro-

gram. If there’s a title error, the state

fund provides coverage.
