I feel very proud to bring you this collection of our pupils’ achievements both in school and in the wider community. Here at Stanwell, the autumn term has been busy and event-ful, culminating in our spectacular production of ‘Aida’ which had a rapturous reception from sell-out audiences over four consecutive nights. I am also delighted to inform you that work has begun on our new all-weather pitch which will further improve the quality of sporting facilities at Stanwell on completion. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the staff, pupils, governors, parents and friends of the school who have contrib-uted to our success this year. I wish you all a happy and restful Christmas break. Mr D. Jones, Headteacher.

Proposed dates for Gold Award: Final weeks:(last two weeks of summer term) Monday 6th – Friday 10th July Stanwell Open Gold group Monday 13th – Friday 17th July

Penarth Gold Night Class group.

With such large expedition groups and changes to kit hire from the Vale, pupils may wish to purchase some of their own equipment espe-cially if they are hoping to continue to the higher DofE level. Pupils must also remember to obtain their evidence and upload it onto their personal DofE accounts. Without the appropri-ate evidence they cannot obtain their award.

The bronze award participants have been re-ceiving first aid training delivered by FAST. Pupils receive basic training which is specifi-cally geared towards what could happen on an expedition. Many thanks to the trainers for their enthusiasm with the pupils when they come into school.

A number of our ex-pupils went to St James’ Palace on Wednesday 26th November to re-ceive their Gold award. They met the Duke of Edinburgh who spoke to them prior to the pres-entation of certificates from TV star Ruth Jones. The pupils were James Williams, Iso-bel Davies, Eleanor Davies, Hannah Buchal-ter, Amelia Newton, Leonor Marques-Worssam, Jemima Bushby and Anna te Wa-ter Naude. It was a fantastic day and we were all very pleased that it was the Duke of Edin-burgh himself who was in attendance this year!

Eco-Schools

The Eco Stanwell committee has been in-volved in a number of initiatives this term. This began with the establishment of a new committee for 2014/2015, the names of members old and new are listed below: Year 13 Sam Laity, Rebecca Te Water Naude Megan Wookey, Emily Thomas Ailsa Maxwell, Robyn Keene Year 12 Jessica Boland, Jack Bosley, Ben Rose Abbie Isaacs, Lauren Faulkner, Martin Doyle Year 11 George Prickett, Ray Vandyck, Sean Mian Year 10 Robert Brown, Michael Conway, Harry Newman, Clodagh McKechnie George Lush Year 8 Zoya Yousef, Neil Power, Enyala Banks Arianne Banks

During November, Eco Stanwell week was organised and to help promote the theme for 2014, “mix it up, use a more sustainable form of transport”; an outside speaker from Sus-tran came to talk to Year 8 pupils in an as-sembly. Other year groups and staff were also asked to complete an eco-survey based on transport habits. In addition, Year 7 pupils created an Eco Wish for the future.

Congratulations to Mrs Symonds, Mr Spils-bury and Mrs Hall for receiving an Eco cer-tificate for all their help with green issues within the school. Stanwell school is to be assessed for the final Green Flag Award early in 2015, more infor-mation will follow in the New Year.

“International eco-organisations”

Mrs J Laity

Eco Stanwell’s Committee attend an inter-national meeting in Cardiff

An Eco Schools Operators’ meeting was held in the Maldron Hotel Cardiff, on Friday 5th December 2014. This is an annual event that occurs throughout the world and in 2014 Wales hosted the event. Members of the eco Stanwell Committee were invited to the meet-ing, along with eco members from Llantwit Major and three local primary schools. The pupils shared their eco experiences with dele-gates from over 60 countries. Harry Newman, Robert Brown and Michael Conway of Year 10 and Neil Power of Year 8 spoke with confi-dence and maturity about Stanwell's environ-mental initiatives during the event. The boys commented, "it has been an interesting experi-ence to speak to so many people from all over the world and we are amazed at the variety of environmental projects going on globally.” Hopefully the pupils have developed environ-mental ideas to use at Stanwell and made inter-esting links with international eco organisa-tions in the process.

Over the Christmas period about 30% more rubbish is produced. Glass, cans, Christmas trees, cards, wrapping paper and plastic are all thrown away in dustbins across the country. This year, why not make a special effort to try and minimise the amount of waste produced over the festive period? The Eco committee hopes that all members of the school and local community remember to save used Christmas cards for the annual “Vale Recycling Competition”. Cards can be brought into school from the 8th January 2015.

Healthy Schools

“Promoting health and well-being”

Mrs L Crowter

Stanwell School actively promotes healthy liv-ing and well-being. Pupils take key roles in de-cision making and participation in order to im-prove the health and environment of our school. We adopt a whole-school approach across the seven different health topics: food and fitness, mental and emotional health and well being, personal development and relationships, sub-stance use and misuse, environment, safety and hygiene. This term, the Healthy Schools’ group has been busy creating a new logo, which summarises our values. The idea that what we put in to our bodies affects our healthy outcomes was the favourite choice and we think our logo (pictured below) captures this idea perfectly.

Well done to all members of the Healthy Schools’ group and especially Joe Andrews from Year 12 for his excellent design! As a group, we have also been considering school policies, our menus and dining areas and the school website, to ensure we are promoting health and well being as effectively as we can.

This term, we have also seen the introduction of ‘Free Fruit Fridays’, an exciting new initiative from the Stanwell catering team. All pupils are entitled to choose one free piece of fruit on Fridays. We are pleased to be able to offer healthy choices and hope to see all pupils take us up on this offer!

Rhys Fford (Year 12) and Joe Stanton (Year 12) from the Stanwell Healthy Schools’ Group have also been into assemblies this term to raise awareness of healthy options and encour-age other pupils to join us and have a say in the school community. If you are interested in be-coming part of the Healthy Schools’ Group, see Mrs Crowter in F31.We meet each half term to discuss the seven health topics and we are always keen to receive the opinions and thoughts of pupils on how we can promote health across the school. We also meet with Mr Robinson, the Head Chef; the Eco-Committee and the 5x60 officer to discuss joint opportunities and initiatives.

You can also follow our regular updates on Twitter—@StanwellHS

Learner Voice

‘Learner Voice’ continues to provide oppor-tunities for pupils to work in partnership with their teachers. The Student Council links all the learner voice groups together and pro-vides a forum for each group to update pupils on recent and planned events and proposed improvements across the school. The all- weather pitch currently under construction was initially suggested by the Student Coun-cil about five years ago and this idea is now on the way to reaching fruition.

Recent updates from the school council:

Following questions about food labelling for allergy sufferers, Mr Robinson (Stanwell Ca-tering Manager) attended the recent meeting to demonstrate the new allergen food label-ling system. Year 11 learners were very com-plimentary about the extra support provided by their maths teachers in preparation for the recent GCSE exam. The breakfast club and early morning revision session were much appreciated and pupils thanked Mr Robinson and his team for the early breakfast before Maths Paper 2. Strategies for coping with pre-exam stress were requested previously by Year 12 and the recent workshop for all Sixth Form Students was much appreciated.

Another visitor to the last meeting was Bethan Watkins from the Vale Youth Ser-vice. She gave an interesting presentation on

“developing links with our local community”

Mr K Watkins

the work of Penarth Youth Action and its links with the local community and the Vale Youth Forum. Stanwell Sixth Form student and the first Vale Youth Mayor Tom Chandler also spoke about the importance of getting involved with decision-making in the local community. Councillors were also asked for feedback on the proposed reports for the Autumn reporting period and made several helpful suggestions about how improvements could be made. The ‘Community Group’ is responsible for organis-ing and promoting charity events and develop-ing links with our local community. The Char-ity Committee of Abbie Isaacs, Alex Warren, Ben Rose, Emilie Waite, Emily Walters, Jenny Blunden, Martin Doyle, Olivia Dwyer, Sarah Brabham, Will Brown and Iman Haq have been very active this term col-lecting 95 shoeboxes of gifts for Operation Christmas Child.

A non-uniform day combined with a Cake-Off competition, sales of Pudsey and Breastcancer Campaign badges and the Year 7 enterprise market all helped to raise a total of £2937.00 for Children in Need and The Breastcancer Campaign. Christmas came early to Stanwell on the last day of term when students and staff wore their Christmas jumpers to raise money for Save the Children. Well done to all those who have taken part.

Staff Sponsored Cycle

“The Teenage Cancer Trust relies on donations”

Mr G Penny

We are delighted to announce that the school was able to raise a combined total of £2120 in aid of the Teenage Cancer Trust this term. This total was the result of a spon-sored cycle which took place on Saturday November 8th, 2014. Many staff, pupils, parents and friends of the school deserve praise for their considerable generosity in making a cash or online donation via the justgiving.com page. Members of the school community also purchased raffle tickets at the open evening in October or donated a prize for the raffle that was held.

The day itself

Thirteen Stanwell School staff cycled across a route which took them from the Stanwell School gates to Ynysangharad Park in Pontypridd fol-lowed by a return to school.

The journey began at 9am and utilised the Taff Trail. Participating staff were as follows: Mr Baldwin, Mr Doyle, Mr Gifford, Mr Griffiths, Mrs Hunter, Miss Jenkins, Mrs Laity, Mr Mans-field, Mr Macpherson, Miss Menhenitt, Mr Penny, Mr Pepper and Mrs Symonds.

The event was enjoyed by all staff involved and, despite the challenging conditions of high winds and rain, all returned safely to the school! Pictured below are the team in Pon-typridd.

The charity The Teenage Cancer Trust relies on dona-tions to enable them to continue with their vital work and to continue to act as a support network for young people affected by cancer. Stanwell School was proud to contribute to this excellent charity. Thanks once again to all within the school community for your generosity and support for this great cause. The participating mem-bers of staff were very grateful for the en-couragement of colleagues, pupils and par-ents. Nadolig llawen a blwyddyn newydd dda!

Arlunio Madrid Visit 2015 Following on from another successful exam season, the Art & Design department has been very busy preparing our pupils for our February visit to Madrid and Toledo. The pupils are looking forward to visiting the

Prado, Thyssen Borne-misza Museum and the Reina Sofia Museum.

Schools Against Ra-cism 2015 Calendar and Poster Competi-tion

A panel of judges selected 15 pictures from hundreds of entries from schools in Cardiff and the Vale, 13 of which will feature in the 2015 calendars, and on two special posters. We are delighted to announce Mia Smith 7W, the winner of this year’s competition, will re-ceive a certificate and £50 in vouchers. The school will receive a cheque for £150. Mia, her family, Miss Owen and Miss Lewis attended a special Calendar and Poster launch on 16th December. Mia’s painting, with the other 14 finalists, is being currently displayed on their website. http://www.refweb.org.uk/schoolcalendarcomp/default.htm

Open Day The depart-ment demon-strated lino printing and marbling techniques to a large number of Open Day visitors this year. There was great interest in the sheer variety and quality of work on display in the Art rooms by all year

groups.

There was a clear indication of the excep-tional standard of creative work regularly achieved by pupils in the department.

Christmas Production A number of Year 11 and 12 pupils have been very generous with their time and skills dur-ing this half term and have created a vibrant backdrop for the school production of ‘Aida’, including: Ella Buehner Gattis, Coire Clarkson, Caitlin Ellis, Clara Hall, Beth Macmillan, Francesca Merrick and Thomas Sharpe. Ellen Ashton and Georgina Smith have been busy creat-ing Egyptian themed props for the set. Addi-tionally, two very tal-ented young artists, Ca-trin Jones 10O and Isabelle Hodgson 10L, have produced a fantas-tic image contained in

Astudiaethau Busnes Open Day Open Day allowed prospective pupils, cur-rent pupils and their parents/carers the op-portunity to sample a taster of Business Studies lessons. Pupils completed a variety of interactive tasks during the event to see if they had the skills that are needed to be a successful entrepreneur, develop new busi-ness ideas and be able to analyse the mar-kets for launching a product/service. Year 9 It has been an exciting start to the new aca-demic year for all the pupils in Year 9 studying Business for the first time. Pupils have been introduced to a range of new business topics and used their learning to complete the ‘Big Ideas’ project.

Students have designed new innovative products and identified the use of logos, slogans and adver-tising to promote the ideas to their target markets. They also analysed possible pitfalls of their prod-ucts through the assessments of possible competi-tors.

Year 12

Pupils have been harnessing their creative ener-gies to design an innovative product within the confectionary market. They have been identifying whether there is a market for their business ideas through assessing the current market size and seg-ments, whilst reviewing potential market growth.

Drama

AIDA Senior Production 2014 Pupils from Year 10-13 have been working incredibly hard on this year’s production of Aida with Verity Tucker (Aida) and Sam-uel Jennings (Radames) playing the lead roles. Kevin McCurdy (a specialist in thea-tre sword-fighting/stage combat) led a fan-tastic sword-fighting workshop in prepara-tion for the show. The pupils thoroughly enjoyed this unique experience. A special thank you to Mrs Matthews and Mrs Holds-worth for their hard work and commit-ment—we wish them all the best in the fu-ture!

GCSE Controlled Assessments Year 11 GCSE Drama pupils recently com-pleted their devised examination on Ordi-nary People and Tragedy. All pupils worked hard in lesson time and after-school rehearsals to produce interesting and thought-provoking pieces of work. Students inYear 10 have also worked incredibly hard towards their Aberfan devised assessment pieces. The teachers have been impressed by their level of commitment at after-school rehearsals.

AS Level Audition Workshops Shelley Norton from the Big Talent Agency led Year 12 audition workshops this half term. The pupils learned useful tips regard-ing auditions and appreciated working with Shelley.

Mrs S McGowan

London Theatre Trip In October, pupils from Year 10-13 enjoyed an overnight trip to London’s West End. Pu-pils had a fabulous time watching The Phantom of the Opera and The Woman in Black. Year 12 Theatre Trip Pupils recently enjoyed a performance of Oh What A Lovely War at The Chapter Arts Centre. Pupils are currently working towards their own production of the play in February 2015. Open Day The Drama Department had a steady stream of visitors during the evening. Visitors en-joyed watching practical A-level coursework and an open rehearsal of the senior produc-tion Aida.. The pupils showcased excellent performance skills, focus and energy. Thank you to all pupils involved in making it such a successful evening. Year 9 Improvisation Workshops Michael Waters from the Royal Welsh Col-lege of Music and Drama ran acting work-shops for Year 9 Drama pupils in Novem-ber.

The pupils said it was a beneficial experi-ence which helped inspire their work this term.

It has been a very exciting start to the new academic year in DT. KS3 Year 7 pupils have been working on a wide range of projects from bottle openers to pil-lows. Pupils are enjoying the projects, work-ing in a practical environment and producing

some excellent work. The bag project in Year 8 contin-ues to be a suc-

cess. Pupils have produced a range of bags including boot bags, hand bags, tote bags and drawstring bags and are enjoying using the new facilities. The Graphics project, which is based on the redesign of a beach-front cafe, is inspiring some excellent work. The food projects and designer-inspired elec-tronic light projects continue to generate a great deal of interest and enthusiasm. GCSE Year 9 students have made a fantas-tic start to the GCSE courses and are building upon their KS3 skills. Pupils are looking forward to their next project where they will be making products in a range of media.

Year 10&11 Following a excellent moderation last term, Year 10 and 11 are set-tling into their CAT projects. Students are currently complet-

ing the design section of their folders in preparation for the manufacturing stage which will begin early next term. Year 12&13 Year 12 students have made a fantastic start on the AS specification. Mark Crothers is designing a portable water filter for use in developing countries, while Phoebe Christie is designing a safe storage system for vinyl records. Year 13 students have started work on their major projects in Food, Textiles and Product Design, with Keira Ryan making a settee for children. The Food students are studying foods from a range of cultures. Ellie Munroe in textiles is enthusiastically taken charge of the costumes for ‘Aida’ and has been assisted

by Yoko Hargreaves and Rebecca Finley. Open Evening Once again, Open Day

was a great suc-cess for the de-partment with

both staff and pu-pils enjoying the afternoon.

This year, Mr Pepper has overseen the department’s involve-ment with the set con-struction and has been assisted by Year 11 and AS Year 12 Product Design students Martin Doyle, Phoebe Christie and Rowan Lambert-Jones. Students have manufactured a range of set items including

maps, Egyptian Gods and swords.

Year 13

Mrs Katrina Jones was kind enough to invite Year 13 to visit OP Chocolate fac-tory in Merthyr Tydfil. OP Chocolate is part of a large French corporation and makes products for Tesco, Morrisons, Sainsburys and ASDA as well as produc-ing their own brand products. We were treated to a factory tour (as well as some free samples) which allowed the class to gain a much better idea of how products are mass produced as well as the tight controls that are involved to ensure that every bar that leaves the factory is safe. The visit assisted the group in their coursework and helped a number of them in choosing a course to study in univer-sity by showing them the possible careers available to them on completion.

Years 9-13 – The Good Food Show At the end of November, Years 9,10,11 and 13 students attended The Good Food Show in Birmingham NEC to view a cooking demonstration by the Hairy Bikers. Based on the release of their new book of tasty diet recipes from the orient, students were shown how to cook by decreasing the fat but not losing out on any flavour. The show had us all in fits of laughter especially Mr Pepper who is now considering a career in sumo wrestling following a demonstration from David and Si!

After the demonstration, students were en-couraged to explore the show and all the ex-hibits. Year 9 pupils especially enjoyed the American candy store and came home with lots of treats that they gladly shared with Mrs Mead! Year 13 students were drawn to the cupcake decorating stand and came away with an array of different flavoured icings and decorations. Overall the day was en-joyed by all who attended. Thank you to all the students for their excellent behaviour.

Clothes show – 9th December 2014 On Tuesday the 9th of December, 63 GCSE and A level Textiles pupils visited the Clothes show live at the NEC in Birming-ham. It was a great opportunity for pupils to look at boutique, vintage, branded and de-signer clothing. Pupils viewed the work of Designer collections on the Designer cat-walk and emerging designers and graduate shows on the image catwalk. Pupils also had the opportunity to attend seminars led by British Fashion Commenta-tor and MBE Caryn Franklin. Seminars of-fered valuable insight into the breath of ca-reers on offer in the industry. Pupils visited the College and University Forum where they were able to ask vital questions about the industry, meet lecturers and other stu-dents and see the work of graduates.

Economeg a Gwleidyddiaeth

Economeg Congratulations to Stanwell’s Monetary Pol-icy Committee for winning the regional heat of the Bank of England’s Two Point Zero Challenge.

Pictured are Jamie Hitchen, Megan Doran, Zola Hargreaves, Carys Warner and Jay Kapuria. During the competition, they made a fifteen minute presentation to representa-tives of the Bank of England, followed by a demanding ten minute question and answer session. In their introduction to Economics, Year 9 students have been looking at the issues of scarcity and limited resources. They have also been exploring the world of work. Pictured below are Year 9 students with the results of their lesson on the benefits of specialisation in the work place. Economics in the News This month saw the Chancellor George Os-bourne making his Autumn statement. Year 12 students took part in a lively debate ques-tioning the current policies and produced a rival manifesto of their own.

“Stanwell’s Monetary Policy Committee wins ...”

Gwyleidyddiaeth Government and Politics students have been extending their understanding of the democ-ratic processes in the UK and the USA this term. It has certainly been an intriguing few months with regards to events, including the Scottish independence referendum and mid-term elections in the USA, so there has cer-tainly been plenty to discuss and analyse. Year 13 students have taken a keen interest in US voting behaviour, political parties and pressure groups. Several members of the class have given superb Welsh Bac presentations, all focusing on key issues; examples include the possible 2016 Presidential candidates, the American political structure, the recent refer-endum and the relative influence of pressure groups and parties. They also recently partici-pated in a fascinating debate to ascertain whether US elections are indeed too expen-sive. Year 12 students have been examining whether the UK really needs a written/codified constitution and whether the Prime Minister currently enjoys too much influence and authority. They have also studied factors which influence voting behaviour in the UK. These factors include primacy issues such as class, ethnicity and age in addition to other factors which include the role of the media. The students also recently completed a series of presentations on the determinants of voting behaviour in UK elections. Particular reference was made to the role of the media and the Americanisation of British politics, as well as the legacy of class and par-tisan alignment.

model version of the Second Severn Cross-ing and another workshop involved the girls programming electronic circuits. The final workshop saw the girls firing paper rockets across the length of the sports hall! Pupils were surprised at the variety of skills and technologies which are required in the engi-neering and construction industry. Staff and pupils thoroughly enjoyed what turned out to be a very busy day. Engineering in Education Scheme Two teams from Year 12 have entered the scheme which is now in its 25th year. One group are linked with RWE Npower and the second with Lion Laboratories. All pupils are thoroughly enjoying being involved with the scheme and are making excellent pro-gress towards presenting their solutions to the specific problems posed at the Celtic Manor Resort in April 2015. We are sure that they will represent the school ably at this prestigious event.

Go4Set 8 pupils from Year 9 are working with ARUP for the duration of the scheme. They have been set the task of designing a zero-carbon classroom for a school of the future. They are currently in the initial stages of their project which concludes in 3 months’ time.

Saesneg Year 13 ‘King Lear’ Lectures Many English Literature A-Level students en-joyed the ‘King Lear’ lectures that were run by Sovereign Education recently. The speakers were engaging, extremely knowledgeable and passionate about Shakespeare’s masterpiece and tragedy. They learned more about his won-derful use of language, the structure of his writing, the characters and their relationships, as well as the important themes. The final speaker also referred to Sophocles’ ‘Oedipus Rex’ which illuminated the comparisons be-tween the texts effectively; a skill that is re-quired in the summer examination. Year 7 Letters to Lesotho Mrs Jones’ Year 7 English class thoroughly enjoyed writing replies to letters they had re-ceived from pupils in Lesotho. Some of our sixth form students have visited pupils in a school there and have worked with the Lesotho Trust, a long standing Penarth charity which funds Primary Schools and links between Le-sotho in Southern Africa and our local commu-nity. Stanwell pupils loved reading about their culture and beautiful scenery and were amazed by the differences between their school and ours. Our pupils eagerly told them all about Penarth and about our daily routines, hobbies and lessons. They cannot wait to hear back from their penpals in Lesotho and hope they enjoy reading about our pupils’ lives and inter-ests. To Kill a Mockingbird In October, Year 10 pupils visited the New Theatre, Cardiff to watch the Regents Park Production of Harper Lee’s ‘To Kill a Mock-ingbird’. The pupils enjoyed the production and their conduct was a credit to the school.

Harry Potter Visit This November, pupils from Year 7 experi-enced the magic of Harry Potter at the Warner Bros. Studios, London. Hogwarts had under-gone a magical makeover in time for Christmas and model castle was made even more breath-taking with a blanket of snow. From the mo-ment the doors to the Great Hall opened, pupils experienced the wonders of the wizarding world. Stepping behind the scenes, they experienced the castle’s festive makeover up close; the iconic Great Hall was decorated for Christmas using the actual golden partridges, baubles and props seen in Harry Potter and the Philoso-pher’s Stone. Eight Christmas trees lined the Great Hall as well as two long dining tables dressed with a seasonal feast with prop ver-sions of turkeys, hams, fruit, vegetables, snow cakes and real flames licking the plum pud-dings! From practising their wand waving to captur-ing themselves riding a broomstick through the streets of London, pupils were amazed by the attention to detail the studios offered. Pupils could also taste some butter-beer as they wan-dered around Privet Drive as the snow fell about them. To complete the tour, they had the opportunity to purchase in the gift shop - the most popular purchase being Bertie Bott’s Every Flavour Beans (including puke flavour!) and of course, the famous chocolate frogs.

Daearyddiaeth

“Geography broadens our horizons”

The Geography department has had a busy and fun packed term broadening our students’ horizons.

On Thursday 11th September, 25 Year 13 geographers were given the fantastic opportunity to visit the University of South Wales Atrium Campus in Cardiff. During the morning, the students attended lectures on the impacts of climatic hazards in Uganda and sustainable food resources. Both topics are part of the students’ A Level studies and the experience not only provided them with up-to-date information on contemporary geographical themes but also gave them a taster of what University lectures are all about. In the afternoon, the group ventured into Cardiff City Centre for some A level fieldwork, where students collected primary data to help them investigate whether Cardiff can be considered a ‘clone town’. The results were interesting and provoked much discussion.

Also in September, 155 Year 11 students visited Tenby in West Wales as part of their GCSE Geography studies. Whilst in Tenby they completed land use maps, pedestrian/

traffic counts, environmental surveys and questionnaires. The results will go towards their Controlled Assignment on the impact of tourism on the coastal resort of Tenby. As a department we were very fortunate that the sun shone all day, the only downside was that the seagulls pinched our sandwiches!

At the beginning of October, Year 9 geographers took part in a day of interactive hazard management provided by the British Cartographic Society in association with the Geographical Association. During the day, entitled ‘The Restless Earth’, the pupils mapped and managed the Japanese earthquake and subsequent tsunami using GIS strategies and Ipad technology.

On Wednesday 13th October, 100 excited Year 8 geographers visited Cadbury World to learn more about ‘the Geography of chocolate.’ Pupils were treated to a talk on the location of industry and Cadbury’s effects on the global environment as well as touring the factory, tasting lots of chocolate and enjoying the new 4D film experience.

Geography

“Geography is a subject that holds the key to our future”

During the October half term, 50 pupils and 5 staff members from the Geography department travelled to Iceland. The party visited various sites of geographical interest, including Skogafoss waterfall, Strokkur Geysir, Thingvellir National Park, Seltún geothermal area and Hveragerdi geothermal park. Highlights of the visit included a swim in the Blue Lagoon and a walk on the magnificent Solheimajokull glacier. A fantastic time was had by all and we even managed to cram in a few snowball fights!

On December the 5th, approximately 100 Year 7 pupils made the journey west to go to the Field Studies Council Discovery Margam Centre in Margam Park. Whilst in Margam Park, the pupils investigated the changing flows of a river as it travels from its source to its mouth. The pupils thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to get muddy, wet and dirty in the outdoor classroom while hopefully picking up some important geographical skills along the way.

During the final week of term, 42 Year 12 students also ventured to the Discovery Margam Centre, but this time only using it as a base to go off and explore areas of geographical interest across South Wales. While out in the field the students had to complete a physical investigation into flood management on the River Ogmore and a human investigation into two contrasting rural communities. The students had a fantastic time and we have gained some interesting data to analyse in the new year.

Finally, members of the Geography Club have been carrying out research in preparation for a new corridor display. The display will be based on the theme of 'Maps in Literature'. The club have been working very hard and have shown excellent knowledge of books that contain maps. Books have ranged from Lord of the Rings by J. R. R. Tolkien to Winnie the Pooh by A. A. Milne. Keep up to date with the latest news from the geography department by following us on Twitter: Stanwell Geography@GEOG2XL

Hanes It has been another exceptionally busy and eventful term in the History Department. The October Open Evening provided pupils and parents alike with the opportunity to investi-gate several different aspects of the First World War. Topics included recruitment, the daily life of a soldier and censorship. Pupils were also given a chance to write a personal letter to the unknown soldier. Many guests were bowled over by the quality of work displayed in the WWI art exhibition. History Club has continued to attract many interested and enthusiastic historians. All of the members have been eager to learn about History outside the classroom and have thor-oughly enjoyed the range of activities. History pupils have studied a lot of exciting issues this term. In Year 7, pupils have been learning about the Battle of Hastings and who became King of England in 1066. They are looking forward to studying how William the Conqueror overcame his problems and life in the Medieval period. Year 8 pupils have enjoyed studying all about the Tudors during this Autumn term. Topics have included Henry VIII and his six wives and The Spanish Armada. In addition to learning in the classroom, 52 very excited Year 8 pupils also visited London in Decem-

ber and thoroughly enjoyed their visit to the Tower of London, especially seeing the place where Anne Boleyn and Katherine Howard were executed. They also had a great time ex-ploring the cultural side to London; in particu-lar visiting Covent Garden and seeing War Horse in the West End. Year 9 students have begun the GCSE course with a highly impressive attitude and have been investigating the key problems and chal-lenges facing the USA in the 1920s. Events studied have included Prohibition and Gang-sters, Immigration and the treatment of black Americans. They have all made an encourag-ing start to the GCSE course and should be commended. Continuing on from their superb progress last year, Year 10 have been studying the Weimar Republic with particular focus on the political problems faced by the Weimar Republic, hyperinflation and the growth of the Nazi Party. Year 11 are currently examining the problems faced by Britain, 1945-1951. Topics have in-cluded the creation of the Welfare State, the Problems of Housing and the Festival of Brit-ain. They should also be proud of the impres-sive exam results they achieved in the summer. Finally, congratulations to Georgina Bartlett,

Katie Black, Lowri Thomas, Emma Thorne and Jess Vining, who spoke at the Historical Asso-ciation Great De-bate competition in Cardiff. Spe-cial congratula-tions should go to

Lowri Thomas who won the Cardiff Heat.

Technoleg Gwybodaeth

Key Stage 3 Both year groups have worked well throughout the term brushing up on their e-safety and spreadsheet skills. There were many pupils in Year 8 who achieved full marks in the recent spreadsheet exam, including: Daniel Cozma, Rowan Higgins, Lucy Jones, James Steele and Denis Yang. Year 7 pupils have enjoyed working with graphics packages to design a vehicle and character using vector tools, creating some imaginative and intricate work.

After School Clubs

There are a number of after school clubs for pupils at all key stages; these include a Games Design Club, Raspberry Pi Club and a Key Stage 4 Club. Pupils should see their classroom teachers for more information.

Hour of Code

Pupils have taken part in a week long ‘Hour of Code’ scheme to introduce them to the joys of computer programming. One of the themes for this year is based on the film ‘Frozen’.

More Able and Talented We are working with our local primary feeder schools to provide an introduction to computer programming for a group of More Able and Talented pupils in Years 5 and 6. Pupils were introduced to some of the key concepts in computer programming to hopefully stimulate an interest in coding.

Mr P Davies

Sixth Form

Year 12 computing students enjoyed a Computer Taster Day at The University of South Wales earlier this term. The event introduced them to careers in computing,

games design programming, social engineering and the issues facing modern computer scientists. Following this visit, we are looking to develop a series of after school workshops in conjunction with the university and Technocamps for all pupils in the new Year.

Key Stage 4 Year 11 pupils have been working hard this term on the ‘Developing Web Products’ module for their GCSE. Pupils recently sat a mock exam in preparation for their exam on 16th January 2015. A revision booklet and video clips are on Moodle (ICT GCSE CIDA 2014-15) to support pupils. Year 11 Computer Science students have been learning to code in Python during the past term and will be starting a controlled assessment after Christmas.

Mr A Meddins

Mathemateg It has been another busy term in the Maths department with, again, the main focus being the November GCSE exams for Year 11. Homework Club on Monday evenings was well attended and hopefully these extra ses-sions, alongside the past paper revision dur-ing lesson time will prove beneficial as we eagerly await the results in early January. A special thank you to members of the 6th form who helped out during these after school ses-sions as part of their community participation for their Welsh Baccalaureate and also to Mark, our catering manager, who organised the food for the Breakfast Club revision ses-sions that ran before the 2nd exam! During the summer holidays Sally Jones (of Year 12—pictured below) attended the Sum-mer School for Girls. Here she and forty other girls took part in an intensive week of mathematics including sessions on geometry, polynomials and group theory. Sally was se-lected for the event due to exceptional per-formance in the UKMT challenges. Since September, fourteen pupils have taken part in the Girls Mathematical Olympiad which is a paper designed to challenge the pupils (pictured below before the test).

We also had the Senior Challenge in Novem-ber for Years 12 and 13 students. Following this, Leo Tucker and Balaji Krishna (Year 13) qualified for the BMO1, a 3 1/2 hour paper which includes complex problems. Also Sally Jones and Katie Macleod (Year 13) qualified for the Senior Kangaroo Challenge. We look forward to finding out how they did! The inter-mediate and junior individual challenges will take place over the next few months which will involve Years 7-11. Find out how these all went in future newsletters and on the news up-dates on our school website. A team of Year 13 students took part in a 6th form quiz run by Glamorgan University. Over 250 teachers and students from various schools attended a very enjoyable occasion! It is ex-tremely pleasing to report that “Andy’s An-gels”, a team consisting of Year 13 students Andreas Asprou, Balaji Krishna, Jack Da-vies, Leo Tucker and Jay Kapuria (all seen below receiving their trophy) finished in 2nd place, a fantastic achievement!

Once again the ‘Maths Mindbenders’ on Open Day was a great success. Many current and potential pupils enjoyed the five-puzzle treas-ure hunt around the Department. Those who completed the puzzles received a certificate and a prize. This year, we again ran a Simon Says competition which was won by Ffion Ross of Sully Primary - da iawn ti!

Media & Film Y Cyfryngau a Ffilm

We are now in our fourth year of teaching Media Studies from Year 9 and our new co-hort of students is more enthusiastic than ever. Pupils who have started particularly well are: Hannah Fletcher, Connor Evans, Amandine Ware, Dan Thomas, Kate Beeslee and Dylan McKee. As a department we have also supported Stanwell’s senior production of ‘Aida’, pro-viding the poster, programme and back-stage support. As you can see from the pictures below, cast members rehearsed in earnest for some time! Years 10 & 11 have been working hard on their controlled assessments and have just sat

their end of year exams. Pupils of note so far are: Sophie Egerstrom (10); Eli Jennings (10); Lucy Dutfield (10); Saumik Dhar (10); Emily Geen (11); Megan Jones (11) and Beth Macmillan (11). AS Film Studies students are once again readying themselves to make some amazing films in the new year. The group recently attended a viewing of the classic film-noir, ‘The Big Sleep’, at Penarth Pier Cinema. This local independent cinema has provided Stanwell students with an excellent facility for seeing classic film texts on the big screen.

A mixed group of Media and Film students also attended a special viewing of the classic South African film, ‘Tsotsi,’ at Chapter Arts and par-ticipated in an enthralling Q & A session with the lead, Presely Chweneyagae. This term, the Year 13 BTEC Creative Media students have been working on planning and

creating their own factual radio programme podcasts. They have researched existing shows and proposed original new ideas that they are currently recording. Special mention should go to Katie Way, Gabrielle Williams, Chloe Saliba and Paige Barry for their original ideas. Year 12 students have been offered a new and exciting BTEC pathway - they now have a choice between the radio industry and the TV and film industry. Lots of our students have opted for the new pathway and are currently filming and editing shorts for new and original programmes. We look forward to seeing the fin-ished products!

Cerddoriaeth

The start of the new academic year has been a busy and enjoyable one for the Music depart-ment. Key Stage 3, GCSE and A Level classes have all been working towards practi-cal examinations, controlled assessments and busily preparing composition folios. In addi-tion, extra-curricular ensemble rehearsals, production rehearsals, concert trips, work-shops and performances have all contributed to making this term a real success.

I would particularly like to thank all pupils involved with extra-curricular groups this term for their commitment and dedication; may it continue all year! I would also like to formally welcome our two new members of staff Mr Giles and Miss Ghazi-Torbati.

Senior Production 2014 - Aida

The Senior Production is, without doubt, one of the highlights of our school year. The pro-duction culminates in a run of four perform-ances (this year on December 15th-18th inclu-sive), and sees a cast, orchestra and crew of over 200 students supported by staff from the Music, Drama, DT, Art, Media, and Mainte-nance departments, perform in Stanwell’s pur-pose built auditorium.

The production is a real team effort and we are so grateful to all staff who gave so freely of their time to support this huge undertaking.

Preparations for the Senior Production began in September, when staff undertook the diffi-cult process of casting the musical. Over 100 students attended the auditions for principal roles, and many students presented first class performances. Following extensive delibera-tions, Sam Jennings and Verity Tucker were given the two lead roles.

Rehearsals began towards the end of Septem-ber with students performing a showcase of numbers in the school Open Evening on Tues-day 21st October (pictured above). Those in the audience for the event were so impressed with the quality of the performance, despite the event taking place so early in the rehearsal process.

The music for Aida is scored for full orchestra and our talented students in Year 7-13 once again rose to the ambitious task of performing such a demanding work. The challenge of this cannot be underestimated and we praise all members of the production orchestra for their commitment and hard work.

“thank all pupils involved with extra-curricular groups this term”

Pupils perform at WMC

As part of the preparations for the production, on Friday 7th November a group of 40 stu-dents from Years 10 to 13 visited the Wales Millennium Centre to publicise the show. Year 13 students Tom Chandler and Re-becca Thompson compered the concert, which featured a range of solo and chorus numbers. The performance was highly praised by members of the public and the proud fam-ily and friends who attended the event.

Kev McCurdy Stage Fighting Workshop

The action of Aida features an intricate sword fighting sequence and Stage-Fighting Chore-ographer Kev McCurdy visited the school on Tuesday 11th November in order to add a fi-nal polish to these scenes.

The realism achieved by students was abso-lutely jaw-dropping and the workshop was enjoyed immensely by all involved.

Peter Karrie visits Stanwell!

West End star Peter Karrie visited the school in November to work with the princi-pal cast of Aida. Peter has had a long asso-ciation with the school and last visited in 2011 to tie in with the premiere of the schools edition of The Phantom of the Op-era and we were delighted to welcome him to the school once more.

The students were absolutely thrilled to re-ceive advice and guidance from such a leg-endary figure and are sure that his words will give their performances an extra boost!

Year 9, 10 and 11 Trip to Lord of the Flies

On October 23rd, a group of Year 9, 10 and 11 GCSE Performing Arts students attended a contemporary dance performance of the clas-sic story Lord of the Flies choreographed by Matthew Bourne.

Many students opting for the GCSE Perform-ing Arts course are dancers and they in par-ticular relished the opportunity to watch live performers in action! Many thanks to Miss Ghazi-Torbati for organising the trip.

Open Evening

A short concert was given at the school Open Evening on Tuesday 21st October to show-case the talents of our extra-curricular vocal groups.

Pupils in ‘Outsiders’ KS3 Boys’ Choir, Junior Girls’ Choir and Senior Choir performed a programme of popular songs that included Fix You, Rude and Livin’ on a Prayer. Visitors to the school were so impressed with the high standards displayed by students, well done to all!

“All students thoroughly enjoyed the day and agreed it added an extra dimension to their A Level studies.”

Careers in Music Talk

Pete Whittard from the Institute of Contem-porary Music Performance visited the de-partment in November to discuss career paths in music such as session performance and composing; he also provided valuable insider information on the industry in gen-eral. In addition to the currently offered A Level Music and Music Technology, the Music department also intends to offer BTEC Per-forming Arts (L3 Double Award) to stu-dents next year. More information will be available at Year 11 Options Evening.

Year 12 Music Technology Trip to the Atrium Campus

On Thursday 11th September, Year 12 A Level Music Technology students attended a day of workshops at the Atrium campus (part of the University of South Wales) to experience taster sessions in song writing, music production and mixing. They also experienced a tour of the state of the art facilities. All students thoroughly enjoyed the day and agreed it added an extra dimension to their A Level studies.

Year 12/13 Concert Trip

On October 1st, a group of Year 12 and 13 students attended a concert at the RWCMD given by the London Haydn Quartet. The students were thrilled to watch the per-formance in which musicians used period in-struments, producing an interesting and au-thentic sound. The experience will no doubt prove especially useful to Year 13 students who are studying the development of the string quartet as part of their A Level Music studies. Many thanks to Mr Sambell for organising the trip.

Oxjam Penarth

Year 13 student Martin Griffiths along with a superb team of assistants (pictured above) organised ‘Oxjam’, a mini music festival, in order to raise funds for Oxfam that took place on October 14th.

Featuring alongside a host of local musicians were Stanwell pupils Ben Dain-Smith, Cur-tis-Lee McDonnell, Luke Morley and Rhys Woolmer. Praise must go to all students in-volved who raised a fantastic £500 for such a worthy cause and produced a well-run event.

Mrs Richards’ Celebration Concert

Following the retirement of Mrs J Richards last academic year, a surprise concert was or-ganised in her honour, to celebrate the tre-mendous legacy she leaves behind at Stan-well.

Over 200 students from every year she has taught at the school presented numbers from past productions, special compositions and meaningful pieces of music spanning across her 23 years at Stanwell. The concert culmi-nated in a group performance of favourite numbers including California Dreamin’ and The Rhythm of Life.

Mrs Connor, together with Mrs Richards’ family, successfully planned and co-ordinated the concert which involved contacting stu-dents around the globe! The concert was a truly unique and special event, befitting such a well loved and respected teacher. We wish Mrs Richards well for the next chapter in her life.

Music in the Vale 2014

Stanwell School once again played host to the annual ‘Music in the Vale’ contest for young musicians on the 15th and 16th November.

Girls’ Basketball The girls have had a very good season so far with the Year 10 and 11 teams obtaining two wins against Cwm Rhymni School. They were also entered into the Welsh Schools’ basketball competition at the House of Sport in Cardiff in November. Here they played against a number of teams in the Vale of Glamorgan and achieved 1st place in the regional qualifiers. They are now eagerly awaiting the finals in January. All the girls thoroughly enjoyed the day and were complimented on their high stan-dard of basketball by many coaches who ob-served their matches. They were outstanding assets to Stanwell School. The Year 7, 8 and 9 teams have also made a good start to the year. Their enthusiasm to par-

ticipate and improve their skills has been out-standing and all the girls have worked ex-tremely hard. The Year 7 and 8 teams were en-tered into the 5x60 girls’ basketball competition in December where they played against a num-ber of teams in the Vale of Glamorgan and achieved 4th and 5th place overall. As a result of the high standard of girls’ basket-ball in the South Wales area, there is now a girls’ basketball league that has been set up from December for KS3 and 4. This is a long

over 400 pupils receiving an award for show-ing a commitment to school based sports. The guest speaker was Mr Dale McIntosh (Former Welsh and Pontypridd No.8 and currently Car-diff Blues defence coach) who gave a heartfelt speech about his sporting career, sending a clear message to pupils about hard work, pas-sion and enjoyment. Rugby at Stanwell continues to go from strength to strength since we have been awarded the WRU School of Rugby Status. With over 150 boys and girls now playing rugby as an extra-curricular activity in school, it is proving to be a very popular choice of rec-reation. Hopefully with the continued support from Old Penarthians RFC and Penarth RFC, this will continue for many seasons to come.

Year 7 rugby This year has seen an excellent start for the Year 7 rugby team who are unbeaten at present in the Vale of Glamorgan League, with excel-lent wins against Bro Morgannwg, Cowbridge and Barry Boys. The team is well led by Charlie Jowett at No.8 and is well supported by Jack Harris, Oliver Evans, Curtis Finch and Jake Ringer in the forwards. The backs have capitalised on the robust performances of the forwards and have scored some excellent tries; well done to Carter Staples and Will

Lloyd who have benefited from the tireless work of some very talented players such as Steffan Crimp, Will Doran, Lloyd Clarke and Jamie Cook, they have all contributed to the outstanding performances of the team. Year 8 rugby The Year 8 rugby team is again proving to be an excellent all-round side which has been boosted by a number of new players who have gained in confidence throughout the term. Evan Lloyd is again the stand-out player in the forwards who has been well supported by Ethan Mills, Max Crandon and Evan Dyer. Aled Rees has been orchestrating the backs from scrum half and has been well supported by Matt Wiltshire, Cameron Sultana and Nick Hague-Jones. Early season losses against Cowbridge and Bro Morgannwg and and an excellent win against Barry Boys have put the Year 8 team in with an excellent chance of making the Vale of Glamorgan Fi-nals in May. Year 9 rugby The Year 9 rugby team has started off their season in a very positive way. They have con-vincingly won games against St Richard Gwyn, Llantwit Major and Barry. George Cowley, Henry Kynaston, Ben Hanson and Matthew Barber have been the stand out players with a number of their team mates also putting up some excellent displays. eThe hard work must now continue in order to succeed in the Vale and Welsh cup competitions. Year 10 rugby The Year 10 rugby squad has once again started very well in the Vale schools’ league. The team consists of a number of boys who are

currently representing the Vale of Glamorgan Schools’ at Under 15s level, these include; Geraint Williams, Jack Vowles, Ben Jones, Jack Lee, Thaine Baker, Niall McSorley, Tom McSorley, Josh Lewis and Luke Keane-Adams. There has also been the introduction of some promising new players such as Richard Lee, Jonathan Bennet and Tommy Friel. Year 11 rugby The Year 11 rugby squad has had an excellent start to the season winning the Vale League comfortably and progressing through to the next round of the Welsh Cup. Players such as Will Gale, Spencer Robinson, Joshua James, Rhys Picton, Rhys Jones, Morgan Rees and Tom Marsh have also all represented the Senior 1st XV this year. Finally, a big congratulation goes to Owen Lloyd for getting selected for the Car-diff Blues. Senior rugby

The senior rugby team this year saw the ap-

pointment of deputy head boy Matthew Holder as captain. Matthew is an excellent role model for all rugby players at Stanwell and continu-ously sets high standards of himself, both on and off the pitch. The rest of the 30 man squad is oozing with talent with players such as Owen

Physical Education Congratulations also go to

Sam Laity who has continued to represent the Crawshays. A highlight of the season so far for the team is winning on Cardiff Arms Park against a very physical St David’s team. Netball Year 7 The Year 7a team has started the season off well with a draw against St Richard Gwyn and wins against Cowbridge, Llantwit and Bro Morgannwg. They are a strong and talented team and their future in the upcoming county tournament looks promising. There are a num-ber of key players who contribute to the game. The team consists of Alissa Courderley, Niamh Sultana, Agatha Leach, Marcy Webbe, Kacie O’Hanlon, Natayah Birchall, Poppy Rapley and Imogen Williams.

The Year 7b netball team has also started the season off well with wins against St Richard Gwyn, Llantwit, Cowbridge and Bro Mor-gannwg. There have been a number of key players in the b team and special mention goes to Tia Donnelly-John who has been shooting well in every match. The upcoming 7b netball tournament will al-low the girls to see how they fare against other teams in the county.

Mr I Summerfield

Year 8 The Year 8a netball team has continued to dominate in their matches with wins against St.Richard Gwyn, Llantwit and Bro Mor-gannwg. A number of the girls have been se-lected for the LA HUB development squad and are showing real potential. The 8b team have also had a number of matches within the Vale and have won some and lost some. In the recent Year 8b netball tournament, the team finished 8th out of 22 schools within the county. Year 9 The Year 9 netball squad has had a number of matches and all the girls have made progress throughout the year. Both teams have played matches within the Vale and although they are yet to win a match, they are improving every match and working hard in training on their skills. Years 10 and 11 The Year 10 netball team played in the recent Year 10 tournament and came 3rd out of 4 in their round. In the Year 11 tournament the girls lost by one goal to Cathedral School

which meant they finished 2nd in the group. Congratulations to Bella Birch Hurst who was selected for the U16 Cardiff and theVale county squad.

Senior netball

Congratulations to Tizzie Birch Hurst (Year 12) who was also was selected for the U18 Cardiff and The Vale netball squad. Tizzie also made the Welsh U17 netball squad.

Girls’ cross country There has been some good individual runners this year in the cross country team with many girls running for the first time for the school. In Year 7, Scarlett Russell and Darcey Harry have performed well in the league races with Scarlett finishing in the top 5 in all races. Isobel Brown (Year 8 ) and Taiya Jones (Year 9) continue to run well and along with Scarlett have been selected to represent the county in January at Blackweir. Congratulations to all who took part.

Trampolining

Trampolining club has proved popular again this term with both boys and girls. After Christ-mas there will be an opportunity for those still waiting to attend the club to come along and join us on Mondays after school from 3 -4.30pm.

Many of our trampolinists attended the Welsh Schools’ trampolining championships in No-vember. For many, it was their first ever com-petition in this discipline and despite some ex-pected nerves they performed very well with some very pleasing individual scores on the day.

Our U14 girls’ team, consisting of Bethan Woodley, Taiya Jones, Flora McWilliam and Caitlin Hancock, achieved 3rd place. Well done to the girls on this great result.

Congratulations to George Lush and Taiya Jones who both achieved 3rd place in their individual categories and have now secured a place in the zonal round of the competition in Cambridge in the New Year.

A Merry Christmas to all club members!

A2 Summer Results

We were delighted by the performance of some of our A2 students in August. Due to their hard-work and commitment, Dominic Bryan, Bethany Hawkins, Wilfred Howard, Kate Lewis and Luke Waddon gained A*’s overall. Wilfred Howard and Luke Waddon have gone on to study Psychology at univer-sity and we wish them the best of luck.

AS Psychology

AS Psychology students have made an enthu-siastic start to the year. They have been study-ing the development of psychological ap-proaches through time and have created some excellent pieces of work.

Early in the term, students were asked to cre-ate models from Play-Doh to demonstrate their understanding of some of Freud’s con-cepts. More recently they were asked to create an animation about cognitive theories. They all rose to the challenge by writing their scripts and then filming or animating. Below is a still from a piece created by Louis De Claire and Will Rotherham.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy

This year we had the opportunity to get a CBT therapist in to speak to our students. Jeny D’Aubyn is a qualified therapist who agreed to come in and speak to stu-dents about the tech-niques and methods that she uses, as well as her career journey. As part of their exam in Year 12 students must be able to describe what happens in therapy, and then in Year 13 they need to be able to evaluate the therapy. Students were very engaged as she discussed topics such as phobias and depression with them. When asked, students said that speakers are useful as they are able to put as-pects from lesson in to real life examples.

Health and Social Care

We have our biggest intake of Year 12 students to date this year and they have made a good start to the course. Health and Social Care is an applied A Level and so we are consistently striving to frame the course in the context of real life settings. To enable us to do that this year we have had a number of speakers in to talk about their jobs.

Rebecca Cadman, the deputy head teacher of Barry Island primary school, came in to discuss her job role and issues around early years’ care with our double award class.

Nuno Mendes, a youth substance misuse worker, came in to speak to our single award class about the skills and qualities required to do his job. Many thanks to all our outside speakers for their contributions to the students’

Open Day The RE Department had a steady stream of visitors during the evening. Artefact displays provided a colourful background and visitors thoughtfully contributed to our Hope for the World postcard collection. When President Obama visited a school in Newport during the NATO Summit, pupils handed him their hopes for the world and we decided to build on this idea; creating a ‘Hope wall display’ and devising a unit of working identifying people such as Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala Yousafzai (pictured below) who in-spire Hope for the World. RE Charity of the Year RE club members decided we ought to have a community focus for our charity fundrais-ing in RE this year. They researched 3 chari-ties with local links and during open day visi-tors were asked to vote for the charity they would like to support. All pupils who study RE in Stanwell have also been voting and the organisation which has been chosen is Ty Gwyn care home in Penarth. For the rest of this academic year RE club will be working out ways pupils at Stanwell can support the chosen charity.

Zoya Yousef posting her vote!

RE Club Members of RE Club have worked very hard in preparing the decorations for the annual St. Augustine’s Christmas Tree Festival. This year’s chosen theme is, ‘Our Welsh Christmas Poet-Tree’. Our theme is influenced by the late Dr. Joseph Parry (1841-1903), one of the most fa-mous of all Welsh composers, who is buried in the churchyard at St. Augustine's. He became the first Professor of Music at the University College of Wales at Aberystwyth. The pupils have also written their own poems and have chosen their favourite Christmas poems as well as a selection of Welsh poems to link the themes of Christmas, Cymraeg and the Community. Pictured are RE club members: Emily Walters, Tom Burge, Matthew George, Zoya Yousef, and Lucy Jones. Learner Voice We recently had our first meeting of the year for the RE Learner Voice. Miss Tutthill led the KS3 group, Mrs Skilton led KS4 and Miss Norman led KS5. We had a very successful and produc-tive meeting with some brilliant suggestions to implement in the new term. It was a valuable op-portunity to share department successes as well as discussing areas for development. All pupils approached the meeting with maturity, making insightful comments and observations. It was also lovely to hear their continued enjoyment of the subject. We look forward to our next session!

Applied Science A number of outside speakers have visited to see the Applied Science classes. STEM Ambassador Mike Smith gave a lecture to explain many of the industrial aspects of the course, while Dylan Carter, a Welsh Assembly Government Energy Manager, spoke to the pupils about energy production and conservation. We are very grateful for the time given up by these speakers as the pupils all found the talks motivating and interesting, as well as helpful with their coursework.

Chemistry The Chemistry department has made a very busy and productive start to the academic year with numbers of Year 10 and Year 11 pupils completing their GCSE controlled assessment tasks. This is an important part of the final grade and all pupils have been mature and diligent in their approach to the work. Many pupils will be completing external exams in January, and have been working well both in lessons and at homework club after school. We wish all the pupils the best of luck for their January exams. The AS Level results in the summer were good with some outstanding individual performances. Of particular note was Balaji Krishna who only

dropped 6 marks in all three of his AS Level exams, with Jack Davies and Jay Kapuria also achieving excellent results. Open Day was a great success with bumper crowds coming to watch the ‘Flashes and Bangs’ demonstrations. The Chemistry staff were ably assisted by Maddy Carver, Ellen Driveman, Karishma Krishna, Mila Monaghan, Sarah Pascoe, Libero Tassinari and Andrew te Water Naude. The pupils impressed the visitors with their knowledge and enthusiasm for the subject, as well as their competence when doing the demonstrations.

Biology

Examination classes have been very busy this term, with GCSE pupils in Year 10 and 11 completing controlled assessments as well as preparing for examinations in January.

Pupils and students have made a number of visits, most notably Year 12, who attended a very insightful genetics conference in December at St. David's Hall, organised by GenePark Wales. Lecturers from a variety of

universities gave talks on subjects ranging from epigenetics to the effect of drugs on the body. Pupils also had the opportunity to talk to university representatives about courses

they would like to study. It was a day thoroughly enjoyed by all. Year 9 pupils attended a lecture by Professor Anthony Campbell at the Pier Pavilion in Penarth on the subject of evolution and the role of Welsh scientist Alfred Russell Wallace.

Finally a special mention for Emma Donovan who completed her Nuffield Bursary placement in the summer. She is pictured at the presentation evening at Techniquest, showing the results of her research into flexibility of patients with back pain.

I would like to remind Year 12 students that they can now apply for the Nuffield Bursary scheme for next summer, see Mr Spilsbury for further details.

“It was a day thoroughly enjoyed by all.”

Physics

It has been a busy term within the Physics department, with many classes in Year 10 and 11 completing controlled assessment tasks for their GCSE courses. All have risen to the challenge to succeed. AS level results in the summer produced some excellent individual achievements notably from Jack Davies and Balaji Krishna who both achieved over 90% of the total marks. Year 11 GCSE results improved with an increase in the overall pass rate alongside some outstanding performances by Sayalie Borade, William Seeley, Sally Jones and James Senior. Year 10 Physics module results were excellent with the following pupils achieving full UMS scores so far in both modules; Basil Crack, Izaak Lee, Seren Marsh, Joseph Short and Jonathan Wright. Well done to all our students. Open day drew large crowds with many attempting to blow out candles with an Air-zooka and watch the ever-youthful Mr West perform the balloon and bed of nails demo. He set a new record in kg before the balloon burst! Learner Voice The most recent development in Science has been the introduction of a Learner Voice group. The group is made up of pupils from all Key Stages and discusses areas that may need to be developed, as well as sharing and celebrating our many successes. Pupils should be commended on their mature and thoughtful approach.

Urdd Swimming Gala

Elizabeth McCulloch of Year 11 is a keen swimmer and organised a team to represent Stanwell in the Urdd swimming gala in Cogan on December 4th. Stanwell was very ably rep-resented at the gala by : Georgia Carr Y7, Ffion McCulloch, Isobel Brown Y8, Jose-phine Harris Y9, Rhys Jones, Andrew Flanigan, Kabir Knupp Y10, Elizabeth McCulloch, Amy Bond, Lloyd Hanson Y11 and Megan O’Brien of Y13. Nearly 100 swimmers took part in an exciting and highly competitive day.

We were very successful and achieved a num-ber of placings, including 1st place in the 100m Freestyle for Elizabeth, 1st place in 100m breast-stroke for Andrew and 1st place for Amy in backstroke. The girls’ relay team came 2nd, as did Isobel in the butterfly and freestyle and Georgia in backstroke. We hope to qualify for the National Gala in the International Pool, Cardiff Bay in January on the strength of these performances. Llongyfarchiadau i bawb! For Open Day, the Welsh department had an arts and crafts session, along with a quiz on Welsh celebrities - enwogion o fri! Much fun was had by all.

A group of 22 pupils from Year 9 and 10 visited the Glan-llyn Urdd camp in November. Pupils were encouraged to take part in a wide variety of outward bounds activities including orienteering, climbing and raft building on the banks of beautiful Lake Tegid in Snowdonia and Archery. Everyone had a fantastic time and their conduct was a credit to Stanwell School and to their parents.

Robin Hood and Maid Marian in the making!

Having built their raft our adventurers are now ready to test their efforts in the lake in Llyn Tegid.

Robert Brown (Year 10), Guillaume Bigsby (Year 9) and Kayleigh Fisher (Year 8) were nominated for the Eryl Walsh Award, which is an award for pupils who show enthusiasm and commitment to learning Welsh as a second language. The event took place on Wednesday July 9th in the Urdd centre which is situated in the Millennium Centre in Cardiff Bay. They participated in workshops and had an informal chat in Welsh with the judges. The pupils chatted for a few minutes about a topic of their choice and then took part in the award ceremony in the evening. Although they were nervous, the judge could not praise them enough, not only on their standard of Welsh but on their impeccable behaviour and wonderful personalities. We could not be more proud of them. Llongyfarchiadau!

It has been a busy term for the three Workskills classes. The Year 9 group has started the ‘Finance & Money Skills’ course and completed the first three units learning about income and expenditure and how to budget. The Year 10 group started the main Workskills course looking at different types of unpaid work. Year 11 pupils have reflected on their summer work experience placements and are de-veloping their team working skills.

In October, the Year 10 pupils took part in the Keep Brit-ain Tidy 60th Anni-versary celebrations

and met Great Uncle Bulgaria during a litter pick on Barry Island. Pictured meeting the famous womble are Year 10 pupils Rhys Walker, Cerys John, Owen Harvey and Leighton Mapley. On the 3rd December, Clare Humphrey from the Vale Volunteer Bureau came into school to give an interesting talk on volunteering and discuss the range of opportunities available to pupils. The 8th of December saw 28 Year 10 and 11 pupils head back to Barry Island again for the 6th consecutive year of working with the Vale of Glamorgan

Visible Services Department. Unusually for a Workskills litter pick in Barry, the weather was excellent with no wind or rain!

The pictures show Year 11 pupils Emily Roberts, Bethan Laventure & Sa-vanngh Holbrook-Fox collecting litter from a windy the Barry Island seafront. It was an enjoyable afternoon for all who participated.

At the top of the newly opened Eastern Prome-nade are Shaun Burke-Davies, Laura Berry, Lydia Cheetham-Booker and David Warner half way through their task.

Finally, as part of the team-building units, the Year 11 pupils have decided to set up a cakes stalls selling their homemade cakes to raise money for their chosen charities. Bethan Laventure, Catlin Denton, Sam Jones, Jordan Sawyer and Shaun Burke-Davis are pictured below with some of their cakes.

Blwyddyn7

It has been an especially busy term for our new pupils this autumn. The Llangrannog trip provided a wonderful opportunity for the year group to bond. All those present had an excellent time in this challenging environment. The excellent behaviour of the pupils was especially note-worthy. It is sometimes not easy to smile in the cold and wet but their spirit and determination won through!

Another highlight of the term was the Children in Need/Breast Cancer fundraising activities in November. All the forms made a magnificent effort to organise stalls and activities for this important day. The highlight of the day was a concert where the pupils sang and danced through the afternoon in aid of the charities. A huge total of nearly three thousand pounds was raised by their magnificent efforts.

We are so proud that the pupils can respond so well, time and time again, to everything that is challenging and positive in the school. We are sure that you will join us in congratulating the pupils below on a most successful first term.

7T

7T pupils have settled into life in Stanwell superbly and have been a pleasure to teach. I have watched them grow and develop as individuals already, and over the next pages you will read about some individual achievements as well as group achievements. I am very proud to say that our form has done exceptionally well this term. Here in Stanwell School we aim for all pupils to achieve as close

to 100% attendance as possible. The following pupils in 7T have achieved this magical number: Ellen Carolan, Lloyd Clarke, Marisa Crandon, William Davies, Michael Dolbear, Isabella Huggins, Luc Kibblewhite, Brooke Martinson, Lewi Minchin, Emma Morgan, Luca Nardone, Louis Powditch, Christopher Slack, Cyprian Wachowicz and Luke Williams.

Pupils are rewarded for completing outstanding classwork and/or homework by receiving stickers, postcards and house points. In 7T there have been a large number of house points awarded, which is obviously very pleasing indeed. Over half of the form have achieved 10 house points or more, with 20 being the highest number awarded as of 2nd December. The accolade for the most number of house points in 7T goes jointly to Cyprian Wachowicz and Anna Hughes .

“their magnificent efforts.”

Year 8 This has been an eventful exciting term for Year 8. All pupils have embarked enthusiastically on the ‘Real Game’. Blwyddyn 9

It has been an interesting and challenging start for Year 9 pupils who have begun to study their chosen GCSE courses. They have been approaching their studies with great en-thusiasm and maturity and we hope this posi-tive attitude will remain throughout the 3 years. Pupils have been gathering evidence of their successes inside and outside school for their progress files, as well as writing per-sonal statements about their achievements. Pupils have also enjoyed a varied pastoral framework. In assemblies, recognition has been given to world events, historical memo-rials, activities and the precepts of the week. Pastoral themes have included learner voice, thinking flexibly, learning pathways and re-spect. Remembrance was also a key theme of the term and we learned about ex-Stanwell pupils who fought and died in the Great War. Year 9 pupils were also involved in Taking Flight’s theatre workshops, teaching pupils about Disability Hate Crime. The perform-ance and follow-up workshops were excel-lent and all pupils thoroughly engaged with the production, learning a great deal about issues facing people with disabilities. This year our School Council representatives are Maddy Carver and Oliver Marsh. Both have taken on the responsibilities of the role with great enthusiasm and maturity, adding much to the School Council meetings. Each form has elected form representatives for the Year 9 Council. Their job is to act as the link between pupils and the School Coun-cil, and they have a great opportunity to raise issues that pupils feel are important to them to help improve the whole school environ-ment.

Year 12 The autumn term has seen Year 12 students busily settling into their chosen AS level sub-jects and into life in the sixth form. We would like to express our pleasure in seeing so many of them continuing their studies at Stanwell, and would also like to welcome the students who have joined us from other schools. Students have already embarked on the sev-eral elements of the Welsh Baccalaureate Qualification, most notably the activities for the Essential Skill, ‘Working With Others’. They were organised into groups and had to design, market and manufacture a product to sell on the school’s Open Day. This involved a ‘Team Enterprise Day’, with a Dragons’ Den presentation where each group had to bid for an investment of up to £20 from local business people. The ‘Market Hall’ was a hive of activ-

ity throughout the open day with all of the groups making a profit. Staff, pupils and visi-tors alike all commented on the quality of the products and the professionalism of the stu-dents. Several groups of students also sold their products at the PTA Christmas Fayre. As well as organising community participation placements for the Welsh Baccalaureate, many students have started to prepare for future ca-reers and university courses. The year group recently visited the Careers Wales Fair in Car-diff, where many students tried their hand at a wide range of new skills including helping the BBC’s special effects department.

Many of our Year 12 students are involved in this year’s production of ‘Aida’ with Sam Jennings, Verity Tucker, Sian Smith, Alex Haines, Calum O’Neil and Lily Webbe all se-curing lead roles. Interim reports detailing the students’ progress in their subject areas thus far were distributed in November and a mid year report will be issued at the end of January following the December examination session. The Sixth Form Information Evening took place on the 6th November, where it was emphasised how important it was for Year 12 students to put themselves in the strongest possible position by the end of the year, not only in terms of AS grades but also by gaining as much relevant ex-perience as possible and developing the impor-tant skills required for both work and higher education. Parents also received details on the timing of assessments and reporting as well as a calendar of events and further detail on the WBQ. Many of our students have also been very busy with various extra curricular activi-ties: WB01 A huge congratulations to Rebecca Egerstrom who has been selected to represent Team GB in the U18s ice hockey team as Netminder.

Iwan Hopkins from Cardiff University also gave a presentation to the year group on interview techniques whilst Adele Rushton of Bristol University gave advice on writing an effective personal statement. Bud-ding medicine and dentistry students have been receiving advice from current students in the field and we would like to say a special thank you to Martin Blamey, formerly of Ca-reers Wales, who returns every year to give advice and support to those applying to study in this very competitive field. We extend our congratulations to the 15 students who have been offered an interview at Oxbridge. For those who are choosing a different path after their time at Stanwell, specialist advice and support will be offered during the next half term on writing a letter of application, seeking and applying for employment. Guid-ance will be offered via the Careers Officer and Mr R Deighton-Jones (our Work Related Education co-ordinator). All Year 13 students continue to work towards obtaining the Welsh Baccalaureate qualification. This is being graded for the first time this year and many university conditional offers received thus far have featured the Welsh Baccalaureate. Stu-dents have been collecting evidence for their Level 3 Communication Portfolio which in-cluded a debate on Humanitarian Aid con-ducted in the classroom. They have also been

completing the Problem Solving Essential skill on researching the different options available to them after their time in the sixth form. Dr Pooky Knightsmith, a specialist in the field of child and adolescent mental health, spoke to the year group about dealing with stress and anxi-ety, especially during examination periods. Coping strategies were discussed and a great deal of positive feedback was received form the students. Due to the removal of the January external modular examination period, internal examina-tions were sat by the students prior to the Christmas break. This gives both staff and stu-dents a real indication of how they are progress-ing at A2 and meaningful and specific feedback can be given in order to set targets for the last stretch of their sixth form education. On a lighter note, several of our Year 13 stu-dents will play leading roles in the school's sen-ior production of ‘Aida’ which will be per-formed during the week prior to the Christmas break. Tom Chandler and Luke Morley have secured main parts while many Year 13 stu-dents are members of the cast, stage crew or orchestra. We would like to wish all Year 13 students a very merry Christmas and a happy new year

after what has been a very busy term.

Blwyddyn13 WB01

Well done to Nicole Morrick who has achieved a merit in the grade 5 examination on the cello. WB02 Daniel Parselle and his band performed in the recent Oxjam concert which raised a consider-able amount for Oxfam and Namika Birchall spent some time during the summer at ITV Yorkshire learning about the Media industry and observed programmes such as Emmerdale being filmed. Well done also to Alice Nottingham who was a volunteer worker at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. WB03 Callum Page-Beighton has written a review for a public British Psychological Society lec-ture which is to be published in the BPS South West hub review. The lecture was by Profes-sor Stephen Beuton on 'Low Frequency Noise- hearing impacts annoyance'. WB04 A big congratulations to Tom Chandler who has recently been voted the Youth Mayor of the Vale of Glamorgan. Tom fought off tough competition and campaigned tirelessly to win this prestigious position.

WB05 Peter McDonough has passed his diploma exam on the euphonium and Owen Rees has been chosen for the senior rugby team. WB06 Matthew Whitfield was ranked first place in the UK youth sailing squad qualifiers and con-sequently secured his place within the squad and Katie Way has been volunteering with Cancer Research. Well done to Rebecca te Wa-ter Naude who has been chosen for Welsh Rowing Academy training and to Kieran Hop-kins who has been an important member of the senior rugby team throughout the term. We also wish Robyn Keane the very best of luck after being accepted by Project Trust to take part in an 8 month teaching placement in Chile next year. Robyn will be going to Chile to teach next year.

“Great achievements by Year 13 students”
