SCHOOL NEWS AROUND THE CLASSROOMS

I would like to introduce myself to the parents and carers at Cloncurry. I am Mr Barker the new Prep Teacher and this week in Prep we have been learning new letters and doing creative activities to celebrate Easter. On Monday and Tuesday we have learnt the letters O and U, making Octopi and Umbrellas to help us learn their sounds. On Wednesday we will be identifying our numbers from 1-20 and making a lion’s face to support learning the letter L. We are also making Easter bonnets and baskets to celebrate Easter. Mr Ed Barker

We made it! This week the students are finishing off their English and Maths assessment pieces for term 1. We have been busy little bunnies making Easter bonnets for the Easter hat parade on Thursday. We are very excited and will be doing lots of writing and maths activities related to Easter. On Tuesday we had a visitor from Ernest Henry Mine to present books from the Books in Homes program. Have a safe and happy holiday! I look forward to seeing you all in term 2. Miss Fleur Hiscock

Wow, Term 1 went very quickly. I hope everyone has a safe and enjoyable Easter break. There will be lots more learning happening next term. See you all then.

Miss Rachel Rozynski

Well….Green class cannot believe that term 1 is over ! We have been busy bees getting all of our assessment finalised this week and I’m very proud of how hard everyone has been working. The students presented their English narratives on the theme of ‘shipwreck’ which proved to be very entertaining. In Maths we have been looking at tricky strategies to solve problems in our head and the students have done a great job. We are looking forward to our Easter activities and Easter bonnet parade on Thursday. Happy Easter from Green class and I hope the Easter bunny finds everyone. Miss Sharni Hall

Well this term has been short and sweet but we have managed to fit a lot in. I am incredibly impressed as I mark the students’ English assessment to see how skilfully they have analysed a poem. Well done Grade Four and I look forward to the wonderful things we will do next term! Miss Kelly Rozynski

I have been absolutely blown away by some of the fantasy chapters the students have written! I was devastated when some of them finished because I really wanted to know what happened next. I have also been astounded by the amount of students achieving their reading goals this term! Some students having jumped as far as 5 reading levels. Super proud of all the hard work the students have put in and look forward to backing this up after the holidays. Mr Harvey

AROUND THE CLASSROOMS LIBRARY NEWS

To all our dear families

We have come to the end of Term 1, 2016. As Easter falls early this year, we have had a very short term of eight and a half weeks, which will be balanced by a very long term next time! The Year 6 class has worked wonderfully this term. They are a fabulous group of young learners, with whom I look forward to working with again next term. Happy and safe holidays to you all. Warm regards Miss Lizzie (Elizabeth Keim)

Here we are already! The end of term but a very productive one across Junior Secondary. Although the term was short, we managed to complete all units and assessment. The students have also managed to reflect on their term goals and discuss new goals

ready for Term 2. A snapshot of the Year 7 English Speeches: “Our Government tells lies and are irresponsible. We need to take a stand and make a difference for our future” – Geoff Silver.

“Water is the most important thing

on earth! WE MUST PUT A STOP TO WASTING WATER TODAY!” – Brianna McArdle. “WE NEED to stop animal abuse. If you see it happening, report that person to the police. Animals’ lives are in our hands. We are their guardians. We are their voice. Will you help me?” – Makayla Barnes.

Have a safe holiday everyone! See you in Term 2, ready to learn. Mrs Cumming and Miss Wignell

Year 9/10 In Home Economics we have been studying the properties and functions of nutrients

and examining their roles in different processes in cooking. Early in the term, for example, the class applied their knowledge of different proteins and made Orange-Lemon Meringue Pie, which uses 2 proteins –albumin (from egg white) and gluten (from flour) – in three different ways. Year 11/12 Hospitality Practices

Hospitality students have been learning to make espresso and manual brew coffees, much to the delight of nearby staff members. They have also recently completed an investigative podcast on Cuppas on Ramsey, looking at how well they cater to a specific customer when compared to the practices of the broader cafe industry. To do this we went on a field trip to Cuppas so students could ask staff questions about their service practices and experience the cafe for themselves. Year 11/12 Home Economics The senior Home Economics students have finally been able to put their pens down after weeks of research on the role of emerging technologies used in the wider food industry with regards to sustainability. Students have just finished writing essays ranging from 800-1500 words about precision agriculture, genetically modified organisms, and nanotechnology, looking specifically at the information available to consumers of products developed with or by those technologies. We will be spending this week using up the sugar, butter, and produce in the pantry to make marmalade and apple butter.

It is the end of term folks! Have a

good look for any school resources

and return any Library books as

soon as possible. There is no more

library borrowing this term.

Library Fun is in a new location!

Happy hunting!

Weekly Book Review: With an informative text and glorious illustrations, this book

explains both how and why people all over the world celebrate Easter. It tells the biblical story of Jesus' Resurrection and then

describes how people honour this day and the origins of these traditions. Hands-on activities help draw children into the spirit of this joyous celebration of rebirth.

That’s all for this week, folks. Happy reading!

YEAR 7-12 ASSESSMENT CALENDAR

We would like to welcome our new Student Councillors for 2016. We have already started

discussing the plans for the year. Our main goal will be to continue the support of our

sponsor child. Keep an eye out for more info on him next term, this will involve fund raising

and the Student Council writing letters each term outlining what has been going on at our

school.

We also are going to place the “friendship chairs” in the lower primary area that the 2015

Student Council raised funds for. We are looking forward to planning a future project so

that our current students can leave their mark on the school.

Our first fund raising will be the last day of term. The Student Council are holding a Big

Brekky where students can purchase a bacon & egg sandwich for $2.50 and Thursday will

be a free dress day with a gold coin donation.

We look forward to working with these students throughout the year.

Mrs Armstrong & Miss Peta

This term has seen our Jumpstars Squad welcome new members. We have been practicing a brand new routine to

show off our wonderful skipping skills and are preparing to perform this routine to our fellow students this week.

We have many planned performances for the year ahead so keep a look out for us. We hope you all enjoy

watching them as much as we enjoy performing them.

Erin Armstrong & Peta Aitchison

On Tuesday representatives from Ernest

Henry Mine presented Students from

Prep to Year 6 with their own book packs.

Students from all years love to receive

their packs which include three books

and a satchel. Students also enjoy having

a story read to them the most popular

being ‘The Duck Song’.

Thank you to Glencore Ernest Henry for

their partnership with Books in Homes

Australia for making this possible.
