  This year’s Teen Leadership Academy has been busy learning what their community has to offer and how  they  can  give  back.    In  November,  the  group  learned  the  importance  of  Community  Service  and Volunteerism  and  all  communi es  depend  on  great  volunteers.    December’s  Focus will  be  College  and Career  Prep  and  in  January,  they  will  be  learning  about  Media  and  Public  Rela ons.    More  detailed informa on will be sent to par cipants a few days in advance of each session. 

  The 2016 4‐H Talent/Variety Show will be held on Saturday, February 25th at East Hardin Middle

School.  Check‐in will be at 10:00 a.m. with the show star ng at 11:00 a.m.  4‐H youth 9‐18 years of age as 

of  January 1st may par cipate and Cloverbuds 5‐8 years of age may compete  in  the cloverbud division.    

PRE‐REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED.   Register by calling Joni at 765‐4121 no later than Friday, February

16th.

CATEGORIES AND RULES: Specialty Acts    Group Acts 1‐4 people    5+ people or 20% of the club’s membership 4 minute maximum  8 minute maximum  

Categories are: 1.  Vocal—if using music, you cannot have vocals on the tape (instrumental or backup vocals only).           You will be placed in theatrical if singing to a tape or CD with vocals.   2.  Instrumental   3.  Physical Skills—dancing, gymnas cs, jump rope, etc.   4.  Theatrical—comedy, drama, lip sync, etc.  

All props must be provided except for a cd player. *If you are using music  on a cd, please label it with your name, category, track # and song name. 

Only youth par cipants may appear in the act. 

One adult may accompany each act.

Acts must pre‐register by Friday, February 20th.  

Select acts may be asked to par cipate in Cloverville at the State Fair 

  Youth ages 5‐18 are invited to design a Piggy Bank, made from recycled materials, for the chance to win some cash!!!  Magnolia Bank will be giving cash prizes to the top 3 banks!  Magnolia Bank will also be sponsoring a Design Night at the Extension Office on Friday, December 9 from 5:30‐7:00 pm.  If you are interested, please see the enclosed flyers for more informa on!

  “WHAT DOES 4‐H MEAN TO YOU?” This is the theme for this year’s 4‐H poster contest.  Put on your thinking cap and get busy crea ng your poster!  Here are the rules:  

RULES:

Poster must have 4‐H in the  tle and it should display what 4‐H means to the 4‐H’er or what 4‐H provides for boys and girls.   

Age categories are Grades 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9‐12. 

Copyrighted characters cannot be used such as Peanuts, Charlie Brown and Mickey Mouse.  Digitally designed art is accepted, but must be the 4‐Hers original work. 

Posters must be designed on poster board 14”x22” (1/2 of a regular poster board.)  Posters may be produced by any medium such as water color, ink, crayon, pencil, paint, but cannot be three dimensional.  NO GLITTER, or other art supplies that may fall off  or stain other projects.  

All posters must have a completed  tle form.  Affix the form on upper le  hand corner on the back of poster.  Forms may be picked up at the Extension office. 

NO sharing posters. Posters are individual, original work of 4‐H member. 

Posters are due by March 17, 2017 

  Please join us for a series of classes for young women ages 12+ on how to be strong leaders led by senior Hardin County 4‐H member, Jenna Meredith.  Three classes remain on Tuesdays, Jan 24, Feb 28, and Mar 28, 2017 all star ng at 6:30 p.m. at the Hardin County Extension Office.  Please call 270‐765‐4121 to register!  See flyer.  

  Now more than ever people are asking what will happen if the bees are gone!  Due to a decrease in numbers,  honey  bees  have  been  placed  on  the  endangered  list.    This  year’s  topic  is  “How can MP3 (Managed Pollinator Protec on Plan) more effec vely protect honey bees from pes cide exposure?” Those  interested  should  submit  a  typed,  double  spaced  12pt  font,  750‐1000  word  essay  to [email protected] no later than Friday, February 10.  Selected essays will be forwarded to Thomas Webster at KY State University by February 27th.  Full details can be found under “Bee Keeping” at:  h p://4‐h.ca.uky.edu/ag

CONGRATULATIONS

  The “I Dare You” award was first offered in 1941 by William H. Danforth, the founder of the Ralston Purina Company.   Mr. Danforth believed  that a balanced  four‐fold of mental, physical,  social and  spiritual development sustained  individuals for the demands of  leadership!   He dared young people to achieve their highest poten al  and  to  influence others  through  lives of  service.    This  year’s  recipients were  Tori Steel, Feathers & Fluff Poultry  / Rabbit 4‐H Club and Rachael Nichols, Trailblazers 4‐H Horse Club.   Tori and her family moved to KY in 2009 and has been involved in the Hardin County 4‐H program since 2010 where she has won numerous awards with her rabbits at the county and state level.  Currently a student at CHHS Tori is a member of the Beta and Earth Club and spends numerous hours volunteering at the Hardin County Animal Shelter, Feeding America, Springhaven and UMC Youth Group.   Rachael became  involved with horses when she was 7 years old and as member of the Trailblazers 4‐H Horse Club she has shown in the mini and English division  and  currently  competes  in  the  contest  division  and  drill  team  compe on.    In  addi on  to  riding Rachael challenges herself by par cipa ng  in horse  judging, hippology and public speaking events.   She has represented KY at the Southern Regions, QH Congress and Eastern Na onals along with other members of the horse judging team.  Rachael has also had the opportunity to par cipate in the Teen Shadowing Program sponsored by the Mississippi QH Associa on and Mississippi State Extension Service.   She currently a ends Central Hardin High School where she is also involved the FFA program.

4‐H COUNCIL A special “THANK YOU” to everyone who helped with the 2016 Banquet of Champions.   Hardin County youth  are  involved  in  a  variety  of  4‐H  programs,  events  and  ac vi es.    The  banquet  not  only  serves  to showcases their accomplishments but provides an opportunity to share with others.     The  next  4‐H  Council mee ng  is  set  for  6:30 p.m. Thursday, January 26th at the  Hardin  County Extension Office.  We will discuss upcoming programs and ac vi es.    

AG TAG FUNDS   “THANKS” to those who supported 2016 spring “Ag Tag” Campaign helping to make Hardin County 2nd 

in  the  state with  a  total of  $21,180.    This  represented  a  substan al  increase  from  2015 with over  $3,500 

coming back to the county for 4‐H programs, events and ac vi es.  Each year the proceeds from the voluntary 

$10 dona on farm license plate renewals are divided equally among 4‐H, FFA and KY Proud.

CLUB NEWS

  We would  like  to CONGRATULATE  the  Lego Dragons Robo cs Team as  they  competed  in  the  First Lego League Regional Tournament on Saturday, December 3 at  the University of Kentucky  in Lexington!!!  The official results have not yet been released  GO TEAM!!   If  you  are  interested  in  joining  the  Lego  Dragons Robo cs Club, NOW IS YOUR CHANCE!  Club mee ngs will be held once a month on Thursday’s from 5:00 ‐ 7:00 p.m. and members will meet to learn about different types of robo cs and  scien fic  methods  through  fun,  hands‐on  learning ac vi es! The mee ng dates will be 3rd Thursdays:  January 19, February 16, March 16, April 20 and May 20 (Saturday ‐ Plant Fair fundraiser). Club members  are  proud  to  announce  their  2016‐17  Officers  Tori Steele,  President  (not  pictured);  Priscilla Riggs,  Vice‐President;  Gabrielle Wallace,  Secretary  and Kelcie Cundiff, Auditor.   Members will have  their holiday party, decorate cookies and work on a cra  at their next mee ng on December 12th—7:00 p.m. at  the Extension Office.   Staring  in 2017  they will meet on January 9th at 7:00 p.m. to go over Record Keeping and Record Books.

  Members will be busy with  community  service projects as  follows: Bell Ringing  for  the Salva on Army on Saturday, December 10th from 10:00 ‐ 4:00 p.m. at Wal‐Mart followed by Caroling at 5:00 p.m. on December 13th at Helmwood Nursing Home.  The annual Holiday Banquet will be on December 9th at the Extension Office.  Decora ons at 4:30 p.m. with dinner at 6:00 p.m.   The first mee ng of 2017 will start with an officers mee ng on January 2nd followed by a regularly monthly business mee ng at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, January 9th.  The club will be volunteering at Feeding America from 5:00‐7:00 p.m. on Monday, January 23 and Tuesday, February 28th.   Hippology prac ce dates are as follows from 4:00 ‐ 6:00 p.m. at the Extension Office: December 5, 12, & 19 and January 9, 16, & 30.

  Bobbins Sewing Club members have been having a blast  learning the basics  from Ms. Gail and Ms. Wanda!  We have had an outstanding response to sewing this year and look forward to all of you star ng your 4‐H clothing project in January!  Mee ngs are scheduled for December 13th and January 10th and 24th from 4:30 –6:30 p.m.  You will have the opportunity to showcase your finished clothing project in the 4‐H Fashion Revue, tenta vely scheduled for May 5.     

  This  year, we  have  been  learning  about  “Back to Basics” and  have made  some  really  yummy recipes!  December’s mee ng will be December 19 from 4:30‐6:30 p.m. and we’ll be making homemade fudge just in  me for the holidays and potatoes on January 16 from 4:30‐6:30 p.m.

CLOVER BUDS CLUB

  The next mee ng  for Clover Buds  is  scheduled  for Saturday, December 17 from 10:00 a.m. ‐ 12:00 p.m. We will be making some awesome arts and cra s in hopes you can use what you make for last minute holiday gi s!  January’s mee ng will be January 21.  Happy Holidays! 

PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOP and CLUB

  Back by popular demand, the 4‐H Photography Club will resume mee ng  in January!   We will kick things off with a photography workshop (open to any youth ages 9‐18) on January 12 at 6:00 p.m. and will be led by KY State 4‐H Treasurer, Paloma Falcon. The workshop “Looking Through a Different Lens” will help youth work on basic photography skills and show how your perspec ve and a tude can change how you lead with your life and 4‐H clubs.  Youth will need to bring a camera (phone, iPad, digital, etc.) and an open mind.  Please call the Extension Office to register 270‐765‐4121.   All other club mee ng dates will be held once monthly on  the 2nd Thursdays and are as  follows:  February 9th, March 9th, April 13th, and May 11th.

WINTER WEATHER NOTICE

As most of you know Mother Nature can be very tricky this  me of year and 

can some mes cause dangerous driving condi ons.  Therefore, I would like to 

remind you that if SCHOOL is CANCELED due to bad weather condi ons,  ALL

4‐H CLUB MEETINGS,  ACTIVITIES AND EVENTS ARE AUTOMATICALLY

CANCELLED AS WELL.  In the event that school is not closed but threatening 

weather condi ons exist, please call the Extension Office at (270) 765‐4121 or 

listen to the local radio sta on for cancella on announcements . 

As 2016 comes to a close and we welcome a New Year I challenge you to reflect on the following quote:
