Vision:

A Christian school where girls blossom into people of goodness, righteousnes s and excellence with an unswerving quest for truth.

“You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.”

Ms. Harriet Noyes, the founder of our

school and a missionary from America,

established the True Light Seminary in

Guangzhou. Upholding the Christian spirit of love,

kindness and persistence, Ms. Noyes was the first

person to provide education and ministry to women

in South China. In 1949, Principal Ma Yi Ying

relocated the school to Hong Kong and renamed it

“Kowloon True Light Middle School”. Till this day, the

school continues her vision for women’s education-

to promote Chinese culture and cultivate all-round

Christian values for girls and women through

education.

General Introduction

Subjects offered and MOI

Bearing in mind the mission of providing

appropriate education for students who have

different interests, a wide range of subjects

is on offer at our school. This year, English Literature

is a new subject added to the Senior Form curriculum

in order to cater to the needs of high ability students.

Our school has devised a whole school language

policy across the curriculum, and implemented

various measures to further strengthen our capacity

for teaching and learning in English.

Under the f ine- tuned Medium of Inst ruct ion

Curriculum

framework, our school has taken into account our

owncircumstancesandthediverseyetspecificneeds

of our students so that the most appropriate MOI

arrangements can be implemented holistically. Our

school has started to teach Integrated Science and

Geography in English in all 4 secondary one classes

and 3 classes have Mathematics, History, Computer

Literacy and Home Economics taught in English.

When S1 moves on to senior secondary level (SS1),

all classes will have all academic subjects taught in

English for the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary

Education.

Project-based LearningProject-based learning, which is a dynamic approach

to teaching, where students explore real-world

problems and challenges, simultaneously developing

cross-curriculum skil ls while working in small

collaborative groups, has been integrated in our

formal curriculum. All F.1 to F.3 students are expected

to complete at least two major projects each year,

covering at least one performance project and one

service project throughout the course of their study.

Through active and engaged learning, students

are inspired to obtain a deeper knowledge of the

subjects they are studying. They are able to develop

confidence and self-direction as they move through

both team-based and independent work.

Literary Module in English LanguageWe believe that literature is an effective tool for

language learning. Literary texts offer rich linguistic

inputs and can help students polish their reading

and writing skills. Through reading different genres,

students are exposed to more diverse vocabulary and

engage in thought provoking issues, such as love,

life and justice. Therefore, currently a wide range

of literary texts, like short stories, poems, novels

and plays, are analyzed critically and creatively

in the literary module in junior forms. With such

comprehensive training, we hope that our students

can become independent and efficient readers,

enjoying the beauty of the English Language.

Enriched resources for English Language LearningWith a low teacher-to-student ratio, teachers in our

school are able to understand individual students

better which allows them to identify areas where

students may need additional help. From Secondary 1

to 6, the four classes are split into 5 groups. In junior

forms, the weakest group has a ratio of 1 teacher to

15 students only. This creates more room for students

to interact with one another and teachers can give

more attention to individuals.

Speaking classes with NETOur Form 5 and 6 can enjoy the opportunity of having

increased exposure to authentic English by conversing

with a NET in English lessons. Aiming to improve

students’ pronunciation and intonation and enhance

their communication strategies in English, our NET

illustrates key strategies in English communication

in one of the English lessons every week and gives

prompt feedback to students’ discussions and

presentations in small groups.

English Curriculum Development

Enhancement and Consolidation CoursesThe school is devoted to stretching students’ English

potential to the fullest by catering for their needs,

interests, aptitudes and abilities. To develop more

resources in this area, our school has successfully

applied for a specially-funded “Diversity Learning

Grant for New Senior Secondary Students’, with

which we organize various free enhancement courses

for F.4 and F.5 students. Experienced tutors have

been invited to improve high achievers’ pronunciation

and intonation and enhance their English results in

Speaking. At the same time, the top 10 students in

secondary 4 and 5 are given extra input in English

writing, in the hope of achieving the highest grade in

DSE examination.

To take care of the need of less able students in

English learning in CMI classes, remedial English

classes are run on Saturdays for Form 1 to 3

students, with the hope that the CMI classes can

build up a better foundation by enhancing accuracy in

writing through scaffolded tasks. Students are given

extra grammatical exercises and reading materials

in this course and frequent assessments have been

conducted to help check progress.

Use of Quality Education FundBy making good use of the Quality Education Fund,

our school has been able to offer “EVA” courses for

senior form students. Each week, students who have

opted to study two elective subjects only will have

one extra English lesson. Our teachers have made

good use of the lesson to increase English input for

students.

activities.Anotherbenefit istoincreasetheexposure

of our students to the 4 different areas of English

Language: listening, speaking, reading and writing. At

the same time, peer support will be given in English

learning.

To promote self-learning of our students, especially

through their attendance in the English Corner and

effort in the English portfolio, students are engaged in

awidevarietyofactivitieslikefilmshows,storytelling,

poem reading, reading aloud activities.

Moreover, English ambassadors are recruited to help

organize activities, like designing monthly reading

comprehension exercises and organizing song

appreciation activities. Teachers can create chances

for committee members to exercise autonomy and

creativity.

Another way of increas ing Engl ish learn ing

opportunities is organizing our unique English school

musical. By cooperating with very experienced staff

outside school, our Form 1 students have been

trained for one year to present an English musical.

This year, the drama will be based on the book, “Prince

and the Pauper”. Through learning how to project

voice and role play various characters from the story

book, students’ confidence in English speaking has

been enhanced.

Creating a language rich environment and alignment with informal curriculumIn order to create a language rich environment and

increase the chance for students to use English on

campus, the English Award Scheme has been set this

year. The main objective is to enhance the motivation

of our students in learning English through different

English Speaking DaysEvery Tuesday in our school is regarded as English

Speaking Day on which students are expected to talk

to teachers and peers in English throughout the day.

Students will also be assigned a topic in advance and

then speak to the English ambassadors and teachers

for 2 minutes during lunch- time. It is hoped that an

English speaking atmosphere can be created and

studentswillbemoreconfidentinusingthelanguage

in their everyday life.

Improvised DramaThe four True Light schools have been cooperating

with one another to provide improvised drama

training to students from the four schools. NET and

English teachers offer students expert opinions on

giving spontaneous speech on the spot. In doing so,

our students’ English speaking skills are gradually

enhanced.Also, theirconfidenceinusingEnglishfor

natural conversation has also increased.

It was the first time I

joined the English Speech Festival.

I don’t have much experience of facing an

audience or joining competitions. All I did was

just to stay relaxed and enjoy the competition.

I was surprised when I got the First Runner-up

prize in the competition, and it was really worth

spending time on it. It was a rewarding

experience.

Speech Festival was enjoyable as it

has given me a great chance to exchange

experiences with other students from other

schools. It was amazing to be the champion and

this has given me courage and support. I need to

thank Ms. Chan, my coach, who has given me a

lot of useful advice to improve my performance. I

will keep improving myself and give another

wonderful performance in future.

In order to integrate mathemat ical concepts

into everyday life, the Mathematics Department

cooperated with the Education Bureau to run a

seed project, titled “Applications of Mathematics

in Everyday Life” for Junior Form students and

“Investigation and development of effective strategies

on the learning and teaching of counting” for Form 4

students from January to May in 2014.

Our Form 3 students have a chance to investigate the

mathematics related to an umbrella through the project.

By careful and sensitive observation of the surroundings,

our students will be more inclined to make association

between everyday happenings with interesting

mathematical concepts. The Form 4 students could see

other ways to solve problems about permutation and

combination through the project.

Moreover, the Mathematics teachers are also keen

on enriching their pedagogical knowledge. Thus,

a number of visits have been organized to local

schools and schools abroad so that they can have

more opportunities to see how effective teaching

strategies work in classrooms. In November, 2013,

our Maths teachers went to visit a secondary school in

Shaoguan(韶關)and Ho Yu College in Tung Chung

in April this year.

What’s more, aiming to motivate students to learn more

about Mathematics, our Form 5 students attended the

Mathematics Education Forum「數味人生」organized

by the Faculty of Education of the University of Hong

Kong in February this year, and they will attend the

10th Lau Oi Wah Memorial Science Lecture Series

organized by the Faculty of Science of the Chinese

University of Hong Kong in May this year.

Our students are also given numerous chances to

assess their Mathematics abilities by participating

in external competitions. Students of all forms sat

for the Mock Exam organized by the Hok Yau Club

in December 2013. S4 students took part in the

“2014 Hong Kong Mathematics Olympiad”. Our S3

students compulsorily sat for the “2014 International

As for internal school activities, “Kowloon True

Light Mensa Society (KTLMS)”, which is a newly

established mathematics study group, has been

organized for Form 1 to 5 students to study some

mathematics topics which are not in the curriculum,

like ternary system, modified tic-tac-toe, magic

squares, fast calculation, Mancala, and geometric

constructions using a ruler only. These lectures or

workshops are held bi-weekly. These have given

students more chances to study mathematics beyond

the scope of the syllabus. “Mathematics Week” was

organized in March, 2014, in which students could

see the beauty of mathematics through game booths,

video shows, workshops and inter-class competitions.

There is an increasing demand from society for

enhancing the development of moral qualities

among students. Therefore, moral education

is an essential element of the school curriculum.

Through learning in different areas and dimensions

of the school curriculum, students can acquire and

master relevant knowledge, skills, values and attitudes

in greater depth.

Caring Culture

To enhance values and moral education, Religious

Studies and class teachers’ periods are integrated

into the formal curriculum as life education. Various

activities are organised in different areas to develop

students’ personal growth, such as a growth day camp

for F.1, a learning day camp for F.4 and a graduation

camp for F.6. Class teachers hold individual and

group counseling sessions with students in ‘Buzzing

Time’ in order to nurture a better sense of belonging

to the school and class spirit. The Personal Growth

Handbook is a good channel for communication

among class teachers, parents and students as

students keep their academic and non-academic

records, including UT results and discipline records,

aswellasreflectionsandcomments,init.

Leadership

Students are the pillars of our future. Therefore, one

of the aims of education is to create an environment

conducive to personal development of young

executives to serve the community. Our school

provides students with a vast and varied range of

choices in their studies, extra-curricular activities and

lifelong learning pursuits.

All the morning and school assemblies are hosted

by our students who have been given training on

presentation skills. Besides, every class is given an

opportunity to produce a performance in the morning

assemblies. Under the leadership and organization

of the class committee members, students perform

satisfactorily, delivering some meaningful messages

to their schoolmates.

To promote a spirit of autonomy, independence and

responsibility, our students are encouraged to take

up roles such as prefects and ambassadors for

various academies and committees, including the

Reading Team, the AV Team, Campus TV and the

School Ambassadors. They play a vital role in helping

out in regular events, such as morning and school

assemblies, as well as important ceremonies and

events, such as school visits and Information Day.

The Student Union is set up to nurture student

leaders in the school and they help to uni te

students and foster a sense of belonging to the

school by organising school activities, like Games

Day, Christmas and farewell celebrations, singing

and dance contests and a fun fair. They promote

relationships with corresponding associations in other

schools through coordinating inter-school activities,

such as joint school music concerts and oral practice.

To uphold biblical values and reinforce life education

among s tudents , the Student and Chr is t ian

Fellowships are set up. They also aim to cultivate

a group of spiritual leaders among students. The

fel lowship staff members are the Evangelism

Ambassadors who help plan the school evangelistic

activities, like Religious Week, evangelism talks and

acts of worship.

A Big Sale Day is organized every year to let F.4

students studying Business, Accounting and Financial

Studies apply their subject knowledge of running

a business in organizing the activity. Students

implement the operation of a business on campus

during lunchtime based on their business proposals.

A lot of creative ideas are generated and a lively

atmosphere is created.

Form Councils are a True Light tradition, where

“the Council” represents the whole form. The “Form

Council” structure was established in 1919. Every

year, our F.1 and F.6 students show their creativity and

leadership skills by organising the F.1 Council Kick-off

Ceremony and the Graduation Evening respectively.

Every year, a leadership training camp is organized to

provide all the students who are taking up the leading

roles at school with proper guidance and training to

equip them with leadership skills. To stretch students’

potential in different areas, students are selected to

participate in various leadership training courses run

by specific organizations. Six students have been

selected as gifted student members of the Hong

Kong Academy for Gifted Education and they have

been offered the opportunity to join its courses freely.

One of our students was successfully selected to

participate in “Shanghai-Hong Kong-Taiwan Youth IT

Summer Camp 2013”.

Religious Education

In our school, the Christian spirit is embodied in its

educational philosophy, curriculum, teacher-student

relations, worship, work and recreation. Religious

Education is part of the curriculum for all classes.

There are regular morning and school assemblies

which include prayers, hymns, Bible readings,

sermons and talks. There are also a number of

optional religious activities including Bible study, and a

School and Christian Fellowship. All members of staff

and students are welcome to join and share in the

religious life of the school.

KTLS Brochure 2014 25

Page 28: Contribution to School

Apart from joining students’ religious activities, our

teachers are encouraged to join various activities and

gatherings organized by the Hong Kong Council of

the Church of Christ in China and our regular prayer

meetings at school. All the new teachers are invited to

participate in the Alpha course, in which new teachers

and the principal have Bible study and sharing.

26 KTLS Brochure 2014

Page 29: Contribution to School

In order to spread God’s love to parents and help

them lead a meaningful life full of true love with their

children, a Parents Education Institute has been set

up to provide parents with a self-learning platform.

A three-staged certificate course is organized for

parents. Through lectures and interactive teaching,

with theory, practice and experience sharing, it is

hoped that parents can uplift their parenting skills with

an ideal education foundation. Besides, there are

various interest groups for parents to participate in so

as to enhance the connections among other parents.

KTLS Brochure 2014 27

Page 30: Contribution to School

We emphasize all-round development of

students. Besides working for academic

excellence, students are encouraged

to take part in other dynamic and diverse learning

activities to attain all-round development in the

domains of ethics, intellect, physique, social skills

and aesthetics according to their own attributes so

that they are capable of life-long learning, critical

and exploratory thinking, innovating and adapting to

change. With guidance from teachers and their own

talent and effort, students get fruitful achievements

every year.

Talent Development

28 KTLS Brochure 2014

Page 31: Contribution to School

It is believed that the ability to compose songs and

music, sing and play instruments and appreciate

all kinds of music helps to develop a strong sense

of universal harmony and awareness of patterns in

life. Students who have strong musical intelligence

are good at thinking in patterns, rhythms and

sounds. They have a strong appreciation for music

and are often good at musical composition and

performance. Therefore, we offer various musical

training programmes and courses which include

Chinese Instrumental Classes, like Zheng Class, Pi-

pa Class, Er-hu Class and Di Class; Classical Music

Training such as Music Theory Class, Orchestra

and Instrumental Classes, Violin Class, Flute Class,

Clarinet Class, Cello Class and Percussion Group;

Modern Music Training such as Jazz Band, Guitar

Class, Guitar Ensemble Group, Drum, Digital Piano

Class and Composer Training.

Our students are encouraged to join some school

and public performances, music training courses

and local and inter-school competitions. In order to

Performing Arts

Music

provide a platform for students to showcase their

musical talents, lunch-time concerts are organized

frequently in our school playground. Besides in-

school performances, our Zheng Goup has several

experiences of giving public performances, such

as at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Our

school choir has also been invited to perform at

Hong Kong Disneyland. Three of our students have

gained valuable learning experience through joining

the CASH Summer Music Project organized by

the Composers and Authors Society of Hong Kong

Ltd. The songs they created are compiled into an

in the annual Hong Kong Schools Music Festival, our

students also took part in the Songwriting Competition

for Youths of Hong Kong 2013, organized by CCC Kei

Tsz Primary School (EDB IT in Education Centre of

Excellence) and Hong Kong Art Music Society; a total

of 6 pieces of our students’ works entered the final.

Drama education has been highly advocated as it is

believed that drama education addresses the skills

which benefit students’ education and development

in five general areas: kinesthetic skills, drama

and theater skills, thinking skills, intra-personal

skills, and interpersonal skills. Besides integrating

drama education in our curriculum, we offer various

opportunities for students to develop their interest in it

and showcase their talents.

Drama

Improvised drama workshops and sharing sessions

are jointly organized with other True Light schools

with the aim to enhance students’ English language

proficiency through different drama activities. In the

last two years, the English musical “The Sound of

Music” and the Chinese musical “The Love Story In

The Fantasyland” have been the highlights of the

anniversary shows respectively. They have provided

platforms for students to showcase their talents.

Although our Drama Club was newly established, they

To enhance cultural exchange between schools,

we joined hands with Ying Wa College to produce

a splendid Drama Night to the audience on 28th

September. We put our award-winning play, Illusions,

on the stage again, but this was certainly a different

production. We invited boys from Ying Wa College

and St. Paul’s College to join in our play and it was

such a fruitful experience for all the participants. The

show was exceptionally spectacular and it finally

ended in a cheerful mood with the applause of the

audience.

Studying art nurtures and develops the aesthetic

potential of young people and helps them to explore

insights and attitudes towards the world and human

experience that cannot be explored through other

means. It is hoped that this can enable them to

participate in the fast-growing creative industries of

Hong Kong. Besides the formal curriculum, students

Visual Arts

are encouraged to take part in different competitions,

such as MTR KTE Hoarding Drawing Competition,

and exhibitions, for example the Exhibition of

Secondary School Students’ Creative Visual Arts

Work, organized by the Education Bureau, as well as

our school’s own art exhibitions.

in the Standard Chartered Arts in the Park Mardi

Gras. This year, a group of students joined in the 2-day

fiesta, themed ‘Gallery in Motion’ , to demonstrate

their artistic talents and creativity as well as to develop

their self-esteem through the creation of eye-catching

and vibrant parade artwork and a medley of dance

performances. To celebrate the 65th anniversary of our

school, an anniversary art album, which is a collection

of students’ art works, will be published.

Physical activities can help to develop students’

confidence and generic skills, especially those of

collaboration, communication, creativity, critical

thinking and aesthetic appreciation. These, together

with the nurturing of positive values and attitudes in

sports, provide a good foundation for students’ lifelong

and life-wide learning. The following sports training

is provided by our school: the Athletics Team, the

Sports

Multiple Intelligences Courses

Our school places great emphasis on extra-curricular

activities as an important part of a well-rounded

education. A broader OLE curriculum has been

established by offering a wide range of “Multiple

Intelligences” Programmes in our formal curriculum.

The theory of multiple intelligences, in which several

kinds of intelligence including linguistic, logical-

mathematical, musical, spatial, bodily-kinesthetic,

interpersonal and intrapersonal intelligences are

identified, gives students a whole new way to look

at their lives, examining potential that they leave

behind in their classroom learning but now have

the opportunity to develop through our “Multiple

Intelligences” Programmes. Activities are structured

under five categories: Language Courses, Sports

Training, Creative Arts, Taste of Life and Interest

Groups. Students can make their own choices of

courses to attend. Wednesday afternoons become

their happy moments when students have a

chance to taste something new. We believe that by

participating in different ECA activities, students will

be exposed to various learning experiences and this

will help enhance the development of their multiple

intelligences.

There is also a wider range of advanced talent

development such as the Chinese and English

Debating Teams. Students can develop their

confidence in presenting to the public and enhance

their logical thinking skills through participating in the

training workshops. The inter-school competitions

also give students good eye-opening experiences.

Community Services & Exchange Programmes

One of the key aims of education is to foster students’

abilities to communicate with the community and the

world. We provide students with opportunities for both

local and international exposure through visits and

exchanges. Through these, students gain a better

understanding of society and the world by interacting

with people of different backgrounds and from other

cultures.

Our students enrich their learning experiences and

develop civic responsibility by participating in youth

services in the community. Gracious acts and a

thankful heart can be fostered by visiting the elderly

and the disabled, by lending a hand in fund-raising

events and by engaging in social service training

workshops.

Students are provided with lots of opportunities

to meet other students from different cultural

backgrounds through off-shore experiences. In

November, 2013, our F.5 students participated in

a National Education Exchange Programme called

42 KTLS Brochure 2014

Page 45: Contribution to School

“Rural Village Experience to Shao Guan”. To increase

the understanding of the history of True Light, a

group of teachers and students took part in a trip

to Guangzhou True Light School in November. A

group of S.4 and S.5 students also joined a learning

tour to Guangzhou to visit some enterprises there in

November, 2013. All S.3 students joined a study tour

to Zhaoqing to increase their understanding of China.

To make our students treasure their learning and

show their concerns and love to people in China, our

school has participated in the Sowers Action. Through

visiting children in China and raising funds for the

reconstruction of schools, it is hoped that students

will gain a more thorough understanding of the needs

of poor children and learn the importance of helping

those in need.

This year, we had the pleasure to have a group of

Science teachers and students from Korea, a group

of college students and teachers from Germany, and

a group of students from Vanguard College, Canada,

visit our school to observe lessons and exchange

experience with our teachers and students.

Since 2000, students from the four True Light

schools have had the chance to explore different

parts of the world, including Australia, the United

Kingdom, the United States and Canada, during their

summer vacations every year. They loved their time

experiencing life in another part of the world which

could help increase their understanding of different

cultures and their interest in learning English.

Outstanding Alumnae

Background information of Helena WongDr. Helena Wong Pik Wan is a distinguished alumnae.

She is a member of the Legislative Council of Hong

Kong for Kowloon West constituency. She is also

a member of the academic staff at Hong Kong

Polytechnic University.

Wong graduated from Chinese University of Hong

Kong with a Bachelor of Arts in Religion and Master of

Philosophy. She continued to receive her Master of Arts

and Doctor of Philosophy in Political science from UCLA.

In 1999, she began teaching at Hong Kong Polytechnic

University. In 2012, Wong was elected into the Legislative

Council of Hong Kong for Kowloon West constituency.

Ms. Wong is a role model for us and her outstanding

achievement has inspired us all.

Democracy and FaithOur alumna, Helena Wong, who is a member of

the Legislative Council of Hong Kong for Kowloon

West constituency, had a sharing with us in our last

Graduation Ceremony. She believes democracy and

faith are closely related. Helena thinks everyone

is equal under democracy. In Christianity, we are

sinners. However, God cherishes everyone. She

believes the values of Christianity can preserve

democratic politics.

Earlier AgeWhen she was young, she wanted to be a pastor, but

she found it was not suitable for her, so she decided

to be a teacher. She thought her eloquence was good

enough to be a teacher, so she started her teaching

career. At first she thought that being a pastor was

the only way to devote oneself to God, but she then

realized that giving good lessons in the classroom

might also be a kind of devotion to God.

Life in the Legislative Council Being a member of the Legislative Council is very

busy.Helenathinksthatthemostdifficultpartistime

management.Shefirsttaughtinauniversityfulltime,

but now she needs to balance the time between

university and Legislative Council; therefore, she has

changed from full time teaching to a part-time job. She

also needs to adjust her pace of life. The conferences

at the Legislative Council usually start at 8:00AM and

sometimes finish at midnight. She feels extremely

pressured. She doesn’t have enough time to spend

with her family even though her mother is suffering

from Alzheimer’s disease. Sometimes she feels

guilty about it. Luckily, her family is really supportive.

Helena feels that God will give her strength wherever

she is.

To True Light GirlsShe encourages our students to be themselves.

Anything is possible in the future. She looks forward

to more females participating in political affairs.

School Motto: “Thou Art the Light of the World.” (Live like Jesus Christ, love others and glorify God.)

School Logo: the star of Bethlehem (Guide the world to Jesus.)

Matthew 5:14-16 (NIV)

“This was the true light that gives light to every man who comes into the world.”
